LMAO @ people thinking he actually supports this. guy is just playing everybody. doubt he suddenly changed his mind seeing as he was against it last I heard. he will probably word it in the interview to sound highly unoffensive to any bigot watching. I have a feeling he doesn't care though like all presidents.

My sarcasm detector doesn't seem to be working.

At this point, if I had to guess, I'd say that Obama is realizing that many of his supporters from 2008 may not be enthused enough to turn out and vote, so I wouldn't be surprised if he took a few semi-bold stands like this in the next few months in order to energize the progressive base leading up to the election.

Edit: Technomancer, I'd guess that it's a somewhat strangely directed argument that if you don't support human rights enough to protect the life of a fetus, it's contradictory to then turn around and support the rights of gay people (though I might not be surprised to learn that that person uses a less kind word than "gay" in some contexts). That's about the only connection that I can make, at least.

My reaction to that Fox Nation pic is best portrayed by the tennis player (Djokociv?) looking like 'what the fuck.. is this person serious?'. Can't find it, though.

Obama was for it in a candidate questionnaire in the 90's, then "evolved" his view into a more politically pragmatic view when he ran for president. It's more likely that he supported it, but was advised not to.

oh man, and this news is coming out on a church night. I expect I could catch quite a show if I chose to walk over to any of the FOUR fucking churches within the quarter mile of my house. Yeah, just pop up some popcorn, saunter on in. I wouldn't want to slip on the froth coating the floors though.

So happy about this.

Also, you know they are just waiting to use judo on the right. They saw what happened with women's issues earlier in the year, they went waaaay too far.

I can see half the Romney campaign is going to have to make a public apology after commenting on this and then giving their opinions.

This is exactly what is going on.

So question...if this costs him the election would the LBT community think it was worth it? Cause man I imagine the GOP would do a lot of harm to gay rights :/

Edit:

Fuck it, it was about time he stuck his neck out for this. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do :D

This doesn't really play with the DADT stuff.

Who cares? This is a place where the "why" doesn't matter.

It's like the long winded debate about the civil war: "It was about state's rights", "No, it was about freeing the slaves", "No it wasn't", etc. In the end, it doesn't matter why it happened, but in the end it was the first step towards African Americans being free and equal.

Just having a president say this is a good first step.

While this isn't an unreasonable line of thought, I'm not sure this takes into account just how ugly the "values" campaigning could get.

They are going to be worse than last time, and that's precisely one of the reasons Obama "came out". Another one is to corner Romney on the issue.

This is exactly what is going on.

Its a combination of factors. I'd say the biggest one is the comments Biden made last week that have placed the administration in a bit of an awkward position. On top of that it can both energize certain segments of the young liberal base as well as potentially setting the hard-right crowd up to make a truly brutal foot-in-mouth comment.

So unexpected. Huge, brass, multicolored balls.

Many may feel that this is an unwise move politically and it certainly is not a safe one. But I'm proud of my President on this day.

Historic day. Our nation's 1st black president becomes the first sitting pres. to support same-sex marriage. I don't think this'll hurt him electorally. Those opposed to same-sex marriage were probably not going to vote for him anyway.

With Obama's blessing checked off the list, it is now time to find me a husband. :P

Im glad this finally came, but I'm not sure why he would time this for now. As a economic leftist, I wish he had the courage to tell people to organize their workplaces and join unions as well. Of course, the stock market and the CEOs he hangs around wouldn't like that.

Wow. Just checked out the FoxNews.com article on this. There is a special kind vile being shown there in the comments.

Glad the president finally voiced his support. It was clear before with everything he and his administration has done over the last few years. I was okay with him not saying the words until after the election but glad he did. He's not hiding and he's taking a stand. The contrast with Romney is getting clearer and clearer. This was an interesting play. I don't think what started with Biden was a mistake.

I'm trying to remember which thread it was that Gaborn said "Obama will never back gay marriage." I think it had something to do with DADT.

Can't wait for Daily Show/Colbert.

*rolls eyes*

They talked about this briefly on NPR today. Obama is going to microtarget all the issues when hes campaigning. So places like Virginia and NC he'll likely focus on economy and not gay rights. Young people (18-39) are a lot less enthusiastic about Obama and were the most favorable towards equal rights. So hes got to win them back without losing the black vote who are considerably more likely to be anti equality.

When the Republicans predictably come out with attack ads against OBama's position and it is viewed as Hatred and Bigotry to a high degree, even Romney will walk away from those ads. This can ONLY help Obama, not hurt him

No it won't because the Republican base is too stupid. They'll believe everything the attack ads say just as they believe everything Fox News says. They could say that the sky is green and farting causes you to float off into space and they would believe it. Let's not forget that this is a base that believes that Obama is a secret Muslim, Socialist, Kenyan who will install death panels once Healthcare is enacted.

That's the next thing, isn't it? The core of this issue is really about rights and privileges being honored equally among all citizens. What's the rationale for continuing to favor married couples (regardless of gender) in this way? I don't think there's any rationale for supporting marriages that couldn't also be used to support heterosexual-only marriage.

I dont think marriage should be recognised by the legal system at all theres no need for it.

I'm scared to change the channel to Fox News

They are not paying much attention, they are more interested in the Edwards trial. However, they did mention how Obama "was framing this as a discrimination issue", and that "he galvanized his base." They also say this is a big win for Romney, because it keeps Republicans on the fence from not voting for him.

Yes. When does the next episode air?

Apologies for the temporary derail.

TONIGHT!

I bet those writers are scrambling around so much right now.

In other news, gay dudes in Weho and Chelsea are freaking out that Obama endorsed marriage equality before their lord and savior, Hilary Clinton.

You've got it backwards. It's obvious he supports it, and has since he was a state senator, but he cowardly backed away from his support while running for president.
