Obama announces support for same-sex marriage

From an outside perspective, it's good to see Obama do this. I'd say "about time", but I know this is a difficult issue in the US, so I'll stick with "well done".

I am surprised he's doing it in an election year, though. That's a very bold move. Obama was very shrewd when he won his first election, there's no way this announcement is not part of some bigger re-election scheme. Campaigning Obama is scarily good at strategy and getting people to vote. My guess would be it's a gambit to get the Republicans to say something that can't be taken back. Get them to overreact and exploit that to make them look bad. That he included the military as part of his reasoning could be part of this. Can this be spun into getting it to look like the Republicans attacking the military? Or what is Obama up to... he proved last time that he's not to be underestimated.

Interesting times ahead for this election, going to be fun to watch.

Better to vote your conscience than gag on hypocrisy by voting for either major party candidate.

A vote is not a wedding vow to the candidate for whom you are voting. It's a strategic exercise of power. By not voting for Mitt Romney or Barack Obama you are effectively endorsing the choice of the rest of the electorate.

A move with integrity. But I think a dumb political move. He just gave the Republicans their culture war they've been unsucessful so far at starting. Politically it would've been smarter to wait until after the election. But I gotta respect him for doing the right thing.

If Romney isn't talking about how bad the economy is, he's losing. It's as simple as that.

I'm scared to change the channel to Fox News

Not sure what that Fox Nation site is.

....well, we're fucked. I hope Romney actually IS the kind not batshit insane financially responsible conservative Dubya tricked people into thinking he was. But he's probably not. Actually, I kind of think he might be the antichrist.

Not that this isn't the right thing to do, of course. I'm pretty sure this stance will make him unelectable in a few swing states. As far as the south goes, while I understand that a dem has no chance of winning southern states in this climate, this is going to make the popular vote look like a slaughter.

Maybe internally his team is for some reason predicting no possible chance of re-election, so he's doing this to set a precedent for protecting the civil rights of gays, so that maybe in 10 or 20 years our country will actually recognize them as full human beings.

Yeah, my concern IS the swing states. But we'll see.

I think Obama just lost Florida.

Props to him for making the stand. Fuck the GOP.

Sadly, this is the highest probability of a loss.

I tuned into Sean Hannity as it was being announced. He's playing it solely as an issue of 'flip-flopping' which is the smart way to play it. Coming out as crazy against Gay Marriage is NOT a good idea for GOPers.

I love that all of the Fox News sites are putting quotes around his views "evolving", not just because it's the terminology Obama used, but so they can add fuel to that fire too.

Your pessimism is misplaced. This will not lose him the election and his team certainly does not believe he can't win.

Yeah, this is a move that's supposed to energize the younger population into voting Obama. Anti-gay marriage people weren't gonna vote for him anyway.

If you look at any individual vote in any state it's as close to as irrelevant as you're going to get. I'm voting the way I am because I recognize that basic fact and am not going to be spoonfed the false claim that "every vote counts" in the individual sense they mean, because that is simply ignoring reality.

If Romney isn't talking about how bad the economy is, he's losing. It's as simple as that.

But if the economy continues going as it has, he needs more than the economy. The republicans know far better than anyone that if you want people to vote against their own economic interest all you have to do is make it about "values"

I'm saddened that they can toss that headline out, its 100% a lie. Not even fluff, but a outright lie, and not even have the article say anything about it. Its literally just to bait people. Just to anger them..

Sure, fox is a joke to civilized human beings, but its just so dishonest to do that to their following.

I almost feel like he should've waited at this point. Sadly he probably lost some support. I'm sure they really analyzed the situation though and figured there would be a percent lost and gained.

Seriously, if Obama changed "Hail to the Chief" to Geto Boys right now, I'd be all for it.

Now all we need is non married couples be treated equally...

That's the next thing, isn't it? The core of this issue is really about rights and privileges being honored equally among all citizens. What's the rationale for continuing to favor married couples (regardless of gender) in this way? I don't think there's any rationale for supporting marriages that couldn't also be used to support heterosexual-only marriage.

Okay, most of the Fox comments are hateful, stupid or both, but this one here got me to laugh just because I have no fucking clue what the point is:
why would you be for abortion....and....for gay marriage? seems contradictory

Ballsy.

I would not have done that if I were him.
Lol at everyone calling him courageous. Biden forced his hand with his comments last Sunday. The press has been making a mockery of the Whitehouse over this issue for the past few days. This announcement was a matter of saving face.

That said, I'm happy that he now being honest about his position. I totally support LGBT equality.

LMAO @ people thinking he actually supports this. guy is just playing everybody. doubt he suddenly changed his mind seeing as he was against it last I heard. he will probably word it in the interview to sound highly unoffensive to any bigot watching. I have a feeling he doesn't care though like all presidents.

Yeah, any swing state he's going to lose because of this was never really a swing state anyway.

And many of the "swing states", going by an actual analysis of polling, haven't been swing states at all. PA is still generally called a swing state when Obama's been +5% or more in just about every poll.
