When did he ever say immigration and welfare was the problem? Wow, must've gone through the hillaryis44 mirror:P

quest: Whose questions should he answer?

innotech: Um....he really didn't even bring race into the equation, the media did:P

Anyone who has the guts to ask the real hard questions. Obama has done a great job avoiding anyone who will ask the tough questions. I want someon to call him out on his lie about not hearing this shit on friday and finally admitting today he heard it.

Show me where he said that. Or do you get your news from Faux?

Doesn't the fact that Obama had to make a speech prove that assertion wrong?

eznark: If you really believe that slavery, Jim Crowe, segregation, and discrimination doesn't explain a lot of the problems in American society today, then there really is no hope for you.

I never once said that, but as with anything at some point the only way to improve your lot is to accept the injustices of the past and move on.

Um, he admitted today that he had heard him say "controversial" things that he didn't agree with, not that he heard those whole "whites inventing HIV" remarks or whatnot. For pete's sake, he even went on Fox News on Friday night!

One reason I wont vote for Obama is BECAUSE he insists on talking about race. Politicians in general focus on this WAY too much. Its pointless and stupid and out of place in an era where professional athletes and celebrities and music stars are all different races and backgrounds.

Holy shit, racism is over?! Was there a party?

What? he said in his speech he had heard Wright say some inflamattory things he never agreed with, not that he was there for those two speeches the media keeps circulating like an OCDer on speed. Theres ammunition there but your using it wrong.

I believe Obama needed to address this elephant-in-the-room much like it was suggested Romney needed to address the elephant that was his religion. Both (everyone?) needed to make their "JFK speech" on the obvious factor they try to avoid speaking about.

Thank god we're done with racism guys. Turns out we didn't need anything else, innotech was the harbinger this whole time. Thanks dude!

Now I don't need my black friend anymore, because there's no need to fake not being racist!

:lol wtf dude? Im saying that race is a tired old excuse and claim that not many people consider to be a dominant issue anymore. america is long since past this stupid issue that shouldnt even be one in the first place. Same goes for gay/lesbian bashing too. People are different. BIG FUCKING WHOOP.

You specifically said that slavery is no longer an explanation, but an excuse.

You were wrong. You can admit that much.

I know I missed all the other speeches by politicians pointing out why we shouldn't be racist anymore. Fuck now I hear I might of missed a party too.

(Lots of projecting of his own fears into Obama's words)

Wow. The whole point of his speech just went WHOOOOOOOSH, right past you didn't it? Along with the very clear statements he made.

I could actually bring up the parts of his speech that say exactly the opposite, in clear terms, but I don't have the time right now.

Your lack of comprehension is fucking astounding. You must have been reading/watching a different speech than me.

Seriously. Read the transcript while looking at your description of the speech. Then prepare for some serious crow eating.

He said that he's heard Wright say potentially controversial things. He DID NOT say that he heard the specific comments that are at the center of this entire issue.

Oh shit, it's back. Don't you have to be spending your time complaining about how your taxes are going to go up?

Taxes can wait. I want to find out why he sat there for 20 years and did nothing about this hate speach. It is time he gives some real answers why he was not man enough to stand up to wright about this hate speach. If he can't stand up to wright how is he going to stand up to the terrorist of the middle east.

Hell, he never even responded to me asking where/when that point was and who/what set it.

Fine, but where is the connection between that sentiment and your Obama non-vote? He has avoided the topic of race throughout this campaign. The current discussion was thrust upon everyone by virtue of Ferraro's comments and an ABCNews report from a few days ago.

It's the fact that you called him a moron AFTER making the spelling error. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have said anything.

Oh, and LOL at "aloud".

No, you're right, it's gone. Good job, sir. The Audacity of Hope was yours all along.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that every time some one says that black people may have been held down you get a shit ton of "slavery was centuries ago, get over it" type of responses. Slavery is largely used as an excuse.

Though if you look at Reverend Wrights generation and how hard the had to fight to end segregation, the way it played in the news then, all the black leaders that were either physically assassinated or had their character assassinated, watching two presidents sympathetic to their cause be assassinated you begin to see why one might be angry or disenfranchised. To ignore these facts and say well I didn't live then so it doesn't matter does a horrible disservice to discussion of the issues.

I'm not saying it doesn't matter, not at all, but allowing these issues to fester and boil to the point where an entire congregation is applauding and cheering the hate filled rants of an African American preacher are in no way conducive to solving the problems of anyone.

There is a difference between understanding the terrible things that have happened to your ancestors and calling all those unlike you the "enemy."

It's those ideas and emotions that turn racism into a self fulfilling prophecy. racism - hatred - reverse racism - hatred and so on.

Again, to try and bring it back to the speech, Obama would have been just as effective and impressive (to me moreso) had he not spent time dwelling on the past.

Yeah! Why didn't he reject and denounce his racist grandmother too?

Either your the most ignorant person i've met or you don't get out much. To say race is a dead issue is fucking laughable. Just look at the polls and how they are divided on race lines, hell go talk to ten people on the street and I guarantee you one of them will be a racist. I work in a bar and can tell you racism is alive and fucking well, I talk to at least one person a day that passes a underhanded racist remark, or a blatant sexist comment. Pretending something doesn't exist doesnt mean it will go away but go ahead and keep tapping those heels.

He kinda had to mention the past, since Wright's comments were grounded in them. He only mentioned it as contextualizing things really.

just saw/heard the speech

he made it very personnal, good. Politically risky, but whatever

some of the things he said were brutally honnest and unconfortable(for some), i think it was the right speech, but i hope old school white and black people get it and dont punish his run for the white house

good speech

Ok, first part of his speech is just nothing relevant. Then he basically tells his background. Basically he says that all of his family is part of every race and color (basically telling you he represents the values of every race and color). Then he basically says that white people support him. Then he addresses some damage control for Jeremiah Wright for himself, and then sort of attempted to make it seem somewhat justified. Then he basically says that nobody should be racist right now (which is sort of rediculous since you can't turn stereotyping thats been built up for many years off like a facet). He says it distorts realty, when the realty is that the statistics for the average black male to find himself in the federal prison is very real. The teen black pregnancy rate is very real. The gangs in oakland is very real. The homicide in oakland, richmond, LA, Laredo are all very real. Its not just blacks. Its everyone and the statistics are there, its VERY real guys. To say people amplify it and distort it is just being in denial.

Then he basically says that black people have struggled and many of them have been robbed of the american dream, and then suddenly hes implying that YOU ALL are robbing him of the american dream if you don't elect him.

Then I sort of laughed when he referanced the OJ simpson trial. Then he complains about the race card.

Then he goes, we shouldn't be talking about race.....DUH! Why the hell are you talking about it now? Why aren't we talking about the issues?

So he starts.

We don't agree. Its not that we don't have Healthcare! WE DON'T HAVE MONEY! MOST OF US CANNOT EVEN DO THE COPAY!

Then he goes onto saying the worst thing he could ever say and that welfare and immigration are the problem, and he plays both sides of the ball.

Theres a problem with the healthcare, theres a problem with jobs, theres a problem with education. Overall, theres a problem with money, right?

Whats your policy?

I already know it and you know what? Obama isn't aggressive enough in his tax laws.
You know who is? Clinton is
Those are the FACTS, don't be amused by the speech, be amused that he is passionate about the issues, but Clinton has the better solution. Think about that.

I understand basically what you think he was basically trying to say. You basically weren't impressed. Got it.

That very well could be. I've only watched it once (I read it twice but it loses a lot). I'm always open to the possibility of being wrong.

How can you make a speech on race and not spend a significant portion of it discussing the past?

I think you missed my post some time ago where I said I pretty much hated everyone who is even running for president this time around. It doesnt matter which side. I cant stand any of the people running. Part of the reason being that they feel the need to address crap like racism and homosexuality instead of EXPLAINING HOW THEY WILL FIX THE GODDAMNED NATION. But how often I forget, that comes secondary to being PC. Just making promises does not equal an explanation either. I'd like to hear details and workable, realistic plans without towing a party line. I doubt I'm alone in that aspect. It's really not an unreasonable request is it?

Like I said, it's ok to be black, but it's not ok to talk about black history. Black history makes Americans feel sad.

Wasn't it just a few years ago that our President attempted to enshrine discrimination against gays/lesbians into the highest law of the land? And you say that gay bashing is long gone?

All of the candidates (except Ron Paul) have details and workable, realistic plans. It is not their fault that the media chooses to not discuss them or that you choose to not "look" for them.

Fair enough, you honestly surprised me. I don't know why, but for some reason I had you pegged as more liberal than libertarian. I agree with everything you said though. I know we'll never have a true libertarian society as I define it, but I guess all we can do is work to get closer to it.

I hate the fact that I'm forced to support liberals in elections :( Ahh at least if America is going to have a daddy I'd rather it be a semi loving one than a abusive step father that is the far right and middle now.

especially when one of the primary reason for the speech in the first place is because of comments made by someone who grew up in that very same "past".

I guess some people think the 1960's where ancient history or something. My father was very much alive during that time, so to act like it should just be completely forgotten is weird.

So giving homosexuals the right to marry, or finding a way to put less black men in prison and more black men in college would not be fixing the country?

I don't know why it would make conservatives feel sad?

I personally don't think you can transcend race (as Obama seems want to do) while also dwelling in the past. Read through the speech and cut out the excerpt I quoted earlier. Nothing is lost because everyone learns the history of black people in this country from grade school, and everyone knows the injustices heaped upon them.

The speech touched upon a couple of truths. Cause/effects of centuries of racism, how others are affected, but they were ALL things we already knew (aside from the ignorant right, that will stay ignorant). Of course, it is not surprising that the Obama cultist see this speech as earth shattering, and that it will magically "open up dialog" in the country, over things people know, yet will not really care for.

At least Obama secured himself as the black candidate, which was first highlighted by him finding spiritual guidance in a racist preacher.
