Obama's pastor: "God Damn America"

The whole "God Damn America" bit actually isn't that far off within the context. He was comparing it condemning other's atrocities, when the US has committed its own while we sing God Bless America.

If McCain went to a church for 20 years and donated significant amounts of money to it, wrote a book about what an inspiration the pastor had been to him personally, and the pastor said 'God damn America' for its tolerance of gays or what have you, it's good to know we would have the same pragmatic approach as long as the pastor retired a few months beforehand.

Hey, if McCain wasn't a bellicose war-monger that wants us mired in Iraq, actually had the ability to inspire people after the shitstorm of this Administration and was able to do all this while being probably the most liberal politician nominated for President, we might all agree with you.

But he isn't. He's the same shit in a shorter suit. I guess if this costs Obama the prize you can always say "I told you so", though I don't think it would come as some sort of shock if another rich, old, white guy won it all at the end.

I do like your implication that there is some sort of "fair play" people here are supposed to adhere to though I don't recall anyone claiming to be The Living Tribunal. *shrug*

BTW, I think it's funny that when Hannity spent the first hour of his show on this, he bleeped out "damn" but not "nigger" :P

Was it as part of "God damn"? There's a longstanding, arbitrary, but strictly enforced rule in broadcasting that treats "God damn" on the same level as "shit" and "fuck", regardless of the rules about "God" and "damn" individually.

bob, I would still bet today that the Dems will win. But the only Democrats who have won presidential elections in the last 40 years were Southerners who presented themselves as moderates who were not beholden to the fringe elements of the party. The Republicans will argue Sen. Obama is a hard left politician who hides it well under his enormous political skills, and these speeches of his mentor will be very useful to that end. After five and half years of the Iraq war, perhaps the 'bellicose warmonger' angle will be enough to defeat that tried and true method, but you don't make money betting against streaks.

Mandark: I used gay rights in the hypothetical because that's what Robertson (or was it Falwell? one of them) said was the reason for the divine retribution of 9/11. Whether that or "the death and oppression of foreigners" is the better explanation for the expression of God's wrath in the form of the 9/11 terror attacks is not an issue I have ever considered, but I would be keen to hear your thoughts on the matter.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that shortly after the devastating Iranian earthquake in the early aughts, I was eating lunch in a restaurant and overheard two old-timers say that it was divine retribution for the sins of Iran. I thought their certainty and callousness was extremely distasteful and it kind of put me off people claiming something or another was fodder for divine retribution in the form of mass death and destruction, so you have a high bar to clear to convince me that "the death and oppression of foreigners" deserves special consideration in the pantheon of reasons for divine retribution..

Yeah it was. It's a pretty stupid rule.

Did the pastor say that God had specifically delivered 9/11 in retribution for the sins he was mentioning?

Mandark said:

No he didn't. He said America brought it upon itself through its actions abroad. Didn't attribute it to God.

Mmmm hmmm.

I'm interpreting this as episode #265,971 in an infinite series: "Why All Discussions of Root Causes Should be Ignored," a collaborative project by movement conservatism in America.

Mandark said:

Nope. He said we indirectly brought it on ourselves through groups we funded.

Mandark, I (no sarcasm) hope the root causes theory of terrorism is substantially correct and that electing the right person to install a neo-isolationist (or non-interventionist, if you prefer) foreign policy worthy of Robert Taft will be able to solve the issue of terrorism in our lifetimes.

I wonder if the average american knows just how damage the U.S. has done to other countries via the CIA over the past 50 years.

Probably not as much damage as the US has done with the IMF and World Bank.

The "average American" is not sympathetic to the Marxist interpretation of history, so no. This is why the Democrats keep losing presidential elections.

I haven't read much Marx, but I'm pretty sure you're abusing the term pretty badly there.

Since you had no problem spouting off about the history of the left and containment when you were really, obviously uninformed, I'm gonna discount your name-dropping of Taft, too.

Hey APF, remember that thread questioning Hillary's association with the Genghis Khan-loving Fellowship? Remember your only argument was that it was tenuous to link the crazy talk with the person without any proposed policy overlap? do that here.
Like Mandark, you argue in bad faith. The above is a red herring and a misstatement of both The Fellowship's position as it pertains to Genghis Khan and my own position as it pertained to that thread.

I still don't get what so bad about this guy calling out America for doing things in gods name. Not overtly mind you but mostly off of supposed christian ideals. This has pissed off a lot of churches in recent years. Lot of evil get carried out in gods name I wish more church leaders would speak out like this guy.

Farrakhan never actually said that Judaism is a "gutter religion" FYI. Also, to label him an anti-semite and a racist and thats it, and ignore his contributions to the black community and his IMPORTANCE to the black community is kind of silly... he is a complex figure, and Obama is right to "reject and denounce" a lot of what he says, but it really isn't black and white.

Man seriously. F*ck Farrakhan!!! And Star you know I'm a black man. People like Farrakhan make me want to throw up.

They feel like just because they do some to help the black community, that they can say all the racist stuff that they want to. No not to me. I can't stand him.

Star Power said:
I wouldn't call it "hate speech"- there is a lot of truth in what he says. I do agree that it is NAGL for Obama, because this guys views aren't very mainstream and Obama has to appeal to everyone in order to win the presidency.

It is hate speech.

Edit: Darn it! I didn't know you were banned. Sorry.

The guy's a loon, and this will be pretty bad for Obama depending on the press that it receives. It would be nice to see Obama denounce this guy (same goes for McCain with the spiritual advisor) rather than just sidestep it.

Here's some of the SHIT Louis Farrakhan has spewed:

"So I said to the members of the press, 'Why won't you go and look into what we are saying about the threats on Reverend Jackson's life?' Here the Jews don't like Farrakhan and so they call me 'Hitler'. Well that's a good name.Hitler was a very great man. He wasn't great for me as a Black man but he was a great German and he rose Germany up from the ashes of her defeat by the united force of all of Europe and America after the First World War. Yet Hitler took Germany from the ashes and rose her up and made her the greatest fighting machine of the twentieth century, brothers and sisters, and even though Europe and America had deciphered the code that Hitler was using to speak to his chiefs of staff, they still had trouble defeating Hitler even after knowing his plans in advance. Now I'm not proud of Hitler's evil toward Jewish people, but that's a matter of record. He rose Germany up from nothing. Well, in a sense you could say there is a similarity in that we are rising our people up from nothing, but don't compare me with your wicked killers."

"These false Jews promote the filth of Hollywood. It's the wicked Jews, the false Jews that are promoting lesbianism, homosexuality, [and] Zionists have manipulated Bush and the American government [on the war in Iraq]"

It seems like being gay or whatever sin you wish to be a part of is okay ... but I have the duty to lift that gay person up to the standard to ask if they want to live the life that God wants them to or live the lifestyle that they want to live."

In comments regarding the decimation of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Louis Farrakhan stated that there was a 25-foot (7.6 m) hole under one of the key levees that failed, and implied that the levee's destruction was a deliberate attempt to wipe out the population of largely black sections within the city.

Farrakhan has referred to Jews, Palestinian Arabs, Koreans, and Vietnamese collectively as "bloodsuckers" and maintains that "Murder and lying comes easy for white people."

So some gay hating, Jew hating, Hitler loving, and crazy conspirator is considered a "good" person by some of you guys? If this asshole posted a fraction of what he believes on this site he would be banned immediately or I would hope he would because this site normally doesn't tolerate racist homophobes.

He already has "denounced" him in the past, of course people conveniently forgot this.

Most of us don't like him. Nothing to worry about.

Could you show me a link to it? I never heard him do so, but I would be really impressed if that's true.

It was in the last debate. That whole "denounce and reject" bit about Farrakhan and Wright. The one where he said he denounced them and their views then Clinton said "well you should reject them" and he said "if you think that's stronger, then I'll concede the point and denounce AND reject them"

Right on.

Just because you do something good doesn't give you the right to do and say whatever the fuck you want. Assholes like him just brainwash people into thinking they are positive people when in fact they aren't anything close to that. People like want to keep shit going on in this country and the world because if there was actual peace and harmony then they would be out of a job. If people were smart they would see that these so called "beneficial leaders" are part of the problem and stop listening to them. They are just attention whores that really need to go away.

I was watching that debate and that was only about Farrakhan. I've never seen or heard any denunciation about Wright.

You're right, Wright was just mentioned tangentially.

Although one could argue that his denunciation of the anti-semitic statements in any form would cover it. Plus, he's said a few times that his minister and he do disagree on a lot of things.

Outside of the Hitler statement, it's honestly not all that surprising when in comparison to several other religious leaders. The Hitler statement is not as bad as you're making it out to be, it is possible to compliment one side of a person while completely denouncing their other sides.

This sir is a pure lie.

Things like this is what makes Farrakhan a horrible person.
