Obduction |OT| Explore, uncover, solve, decide in a Mysterious world

GAF, forgive the PC illiteracy in this post...

I've been rocking the new Alienware Alpha R2 i5 for my PC gaming needs of late. I haven't replaced the standard built-in HDD with an SSD. I know an SSD is "highly recommended" for this game. With my specs and hard drive, how well will I be able to run this?

Yeah, you missed it.

Ha. Was it in one of the notes that are almost unreadable when playing on my TV? If so, I'll probably be missing a bunch of things... I don't like having to stand up and lean over the coffee table to try to read shit... :(

I've got a small tech question. I'm thinking of limiting my framerate to 30 since it would allow me to crank up the settings a little more and have a more stable experience. I'm trying to figure out the best/easiest way to do this. I just downloaded RivaTuner Statistics Server and tested it out without any success. I set the application detection level to high and the limiter to 30. I used to use Nvidia Inspector for similar needs, but it seems RTSS is a little more popular now. I also used to use RivaTuner for triple buffer vsync but this seems to be a different program. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something, like some option or setting that should be turned on/off.

Something I did notice, though. When my framerate drops to the 30-45 range, it feels a lot worse and less responsive than 30 FPS games I've played. I'm wondering if there's some issue here, and it could be why the minimum recommended specs are so high.

It was on a
yellow sticky note
if I'm not mistaken.

I agree with you here. I'm just playing on my monitor and although most of the notes are readable, I've still had some issues. I like how most modern games throw up the option to have actual text transcribing the note so there's no issues trying to make out low resolution text or handwriting.

So I need help:

I suppose this is russian, what does it means? I have absolutely no clue on how operating this machine. I activated the nearby mechanism, but it's literally the only thing I did in this age, since I'm not able to interact with anything else apparently.

I just skipped it for now and did other stuff. Yes, there is other stuff to do there.

Ehm, an hint? Because I literally wandered around, the only things I found are:
-the machinery near the russian box, I activated that.
the ladder connected to the russian box, but I think to lower the stair I need to interact with the machine, so no clue.
-a teleport to the hub
-an elevator I can't operate yet
-nothing else

Also the russian note means "to do something pointless" if can help.

Shit yes! Only problem is I'd like to play it with my GF, but it's PC-only atm right?

Playing things like this is best done together on my sofa, but there's no way I'm moving my rig over there, with all the cables and VR set up and little space near my TV screen.

As I said on Steam, the one on the second pic literally means "to do something pointless" haha

EDIT:

And the knobs on the top pic are marked "range 1" and "range 2" (plus "bloc 1" at the very bottom). Probably doesn't mean anything.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. The game apparently uses a lot of video memory, so you will probably have to have graphics settings on medium or something. I'm will still look decent I'm sure. An SSD will just make loading times faster and might reduce some stuttering between loading areas.

You could at least give it a go and if it doesn't run well at all, you could just get a refund.

I finally solved the
Russian box
puzzle, it's my favorite so far.
The elevator is stuck and I can't reach the red ray :S

Think about
where the "-a teleport to the hub" took you

About the
russian, what you need to do and how you reached a solution.

You have to fix other machinery first and go to a different spot within that world to find the solution.

I have a shitty PC from 2010 in my living room. Steam in-home streaming to the rescue. Works REALLY well (especially for a game like this; for twitch based games it may not be as good), and no need to move the main rig.

Ah ok, I'm playing again to see if I can proceed further. Anyway this game is the best thing from Uru (I didn't like Myst V so much, I ended up on skipping an age because I did a paint on a tablet and it teleported me at the end of the age or something like that, I never liked Myst V particularly, it's not bad, but not the best Myst game).

Damn, does it feel good to have a traditional adventure game in this style again, and with these graphics.

Cyan did it again, after all these years.

Thank you Kickstarter. Have never been so satisfied with something I've backed (though I anticipate feeling similarly when Shenmue III finally comes out).

Yeah it's so joyous that this can exist nowadays. Over the past few years I have felt an emptiness that only this game could provide. Myst is one of my all time favorite series.

I don't know how far I am into the first world, but the lore, discovery, and puzzles are on point so far. Excited to see how crazy the puzzles get.

Finished my playthrough. Was about 9 hours according to steam.

Really liked a lot of elements but man does this game love to waste your time.

Spoiler for second age
Jungle

That last maze puzzle was horrendously annoying. I can only imagine how bad it'd be for people without an SSD.

what do you mean by wasting your time?

9 hours seems like a good length. Did you feel satisfied by the time the credits rolled?

I take it they mean the backtracking and need for frequent experimentation. As I mentioned earlier I do think the full movement of modern 3d game design can clash heavily with this older one of non linear, interconnected puzzles, especially when dealing with overlapping logic systems between different worlds. Exploring the environments is a joy, but after awhile you just want to get to that one panel/puzzle over yonder fast to see if your latest idea or intuition bears fruit. Sprinting across the landscape constantly like some Elder Scrolls grind gets in the way of the pure puzzling. Unlocking certain shortcuts cuts down on that somewhat, but it can still be a hindrance, especially when there can be long load times going between worlds. I don't feel like The Witness had this problem due to the mostly self contained nature of the different puzzle sections.

To reiterate from previous post, I really hope they include teleport for the VR version. Maybe someone can rejigger that for 2d play as well :P

My spoiler addressed this with a specific area, but basically what wanderingprostheyltite said.

I spent what felt like an hour inputting the solution to one puzzle, even though arriving at that solution was near trivial. Faster loading times and a faster sprint speed would have been awesome (plus just removing that puzzle).

Game was very satisfying overall! I liked it a lot. Now I'm just wanting to look up guides and things to see what I missed.

alright fair enough. thanks for the explanation. =)

I wanna try different transition modes instead of free roam. Or maybe that's not a feature. have to check tonight.

So I logged back in today and there was some kind of little patch, and the bug went away!

I was able to get back into the area that I wasn't able too last night! Man I am so excited, I was so bummed out last night.

for those about 6-8 hrs into the game, my bug was:

the big stone globe that is on the motorcycle rail thing that you play around with, for some reason the stone was blocking my path when I warped it back. I had gone and ran through the level and through the stone area and when I tried to go back through it was just wall right past the steel door area. It was so strange.

Edit: It has also become apparent why they recommend an SSD :P

Im very glad your save wasnt lost. That would suck.

Also im very happy for Rand and everyone the game is slowly getting recognized. Real life (motherfucking government ya'll) has intercepted me for a week so i wont be playing much but look forward to returning when i can. I think ill just take it slow and look up faqs when i give up. I only revealed 1 spoiled puzzle for myself by accident watching that devious fuck Jonathon Blow do shit.

Okay so I'm stuck and I just started.
Already talked to the guy who said to turn on the electricity.

Any hints?

Get past the river door and go toward a train car is my first hints.

I don't know how to
unlock the river door
...I did
make the waterfall trigger.
I don't know if that's substantial to anything. That's all I've done so far.

go to the door after the river flows and play with the levers on it, then pull a handle. Youll open it eventually. Then look for a train car hooked up to a gas station.

Which door?
the door blocking the river. You should have let the waterfall flow, and then down at the end is a large metal door. There are levers on it. Push them down on one side and then find a handle nearby and push it. It will get you toward the other stuff. I'd recommend finding a good FAQ (if they even exist i dont know yet) and maybe using it to keep going forward. The game gets much harder and requires a lot of analyzing.

No, I just completely missed that you could pull that up and down. UGH. Knew it was gonna be that easy, I was looking at that thing for a while. Lol

I beat the Witness without a guide so time for this one to be beat without one as well.

This game is out of control. I just got into Farley's house and
I have never felt so exhilarated reading 20 mins worth of journals before. The writing is so great and the sense of wonder is incredible. I loved reading about the seeds and alien species and really got a good feel for the world and what has happened so far. Gazing at the map and thinking about the nooks and crannies I explored and how they relate to one another. Reading the guest book and seeing people who arrived from different places and times. Listening to the tape and hearing the circumstances of people getting transported to Hunrath, etc.

I am really in love with this game and to think that I've barely scratched the surface is exciting as hell. So far I've only been able to play in small stretches due to lack of free time but that's ok. I am savouring this experience and look forward to getting back in for more!

For a series newbie (never really played Myst for more than 10 minutes), regarding the older Myst/Riven puzzle games, which ones would you all say are 'must plays' of the genre? Think I might bite the bullet and get a couple on steam rn.

info dump
so I'm taking a break for a while to collect thoughts. I'm SO much better at puzzles than I was in my childhood Myst Days!
