Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

NO NO NO NO NO.

I played the living hell out of both of those titles and loved them dearly.

Thank god I get paid Friday. I just need 200 more points and I'll buy both out of nostalgic love.
That is basicly what VC reviews said, so...

I say worst week ever...confirmed bitches.=(

I have to agree with TJ . . . January 1st, 2007 (Urban Champion & Baseball) is hands down the worst North American Virtual Console week ever and I don't think it will be surpassed in the forseeable future.

Where is my...Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 3, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG

I doubt we see any of these soon. The most likely release probably would be Super Mario RPG, but that would be because Nintendo would be pushing for it, not SquareEnix. I suppose Secret of Mana & Secret of Evermore are possible, but I think Squeenix would concentrate on more obscure titles first (e.g. Soul Blazer, Robotrek). Final Fantasy 3 & Chrono Trigger? Not this year, not next year, and probably not even the year after that.

free flash gambling games run laps around [Vegas Stakes] in 2007 though

Any possibility that you can point me in the direction of these games? I'm sincerely curious. I've played probably a couple dozen flash games (none in the casino genre though), and they provided some good entertainment. However, these games you reference would have to be a couple steps up from any Flash game I've ever played in order to match Vegas Stakes. Vegas Stakes ties everything together in a cohesive & entertaining package I doubt a Flash game could replicate, but I'm always willing to be proven wrong especially when there is some entertaining gaming to be gained in the process. :D

Mmmhmmm . . . may be time to drag the ole' Nintendo 64 out of the closet.

It'd be nice to see a 20th anniversary update on 12/17 with NES games Mega Man, Mega Man 2, and Final Fantasy. Ah, who am I kidding. It'll never happen.

Actually, I was thinking along the same lines just the other day, except I penciled in Mega Man, Mega Man X, and Mega Man 64 for 12/17/07 in honor of the Blue Bomber's 20th anniversary. Now, there is another pipe dream.

Europe already has Mega Man 2 rated and we in North America don't even have the first one yet.

What the hell, Capcom? Is this some kind of repayment to Europe for not giving them the Anniversary Collection?

Europe doesn't have it. Australia has rated it, but there are several games that have been rated by the OFLC for quite some time. I don't see Capcom releasing it there before at least giving the first to North America.

JSnake gets the next week's list every Friday. He's technically not allowed to tell us the titles of the games, but this rule isn't always followed. :D

Pity it's the Mega Drive version though, the SNES version has 4-player support and an endless mode.

I'd especially like to see Super PP2 "Remix".

At any rate it's great to see more PP coming our way. Hopefully we'll also see Sun 64 and ~n Party 64!

Fight the power! :p

But yeah, technically I'm not allowed to, but my rep is pretty cool. He admitted that he himself wouldn't be able to keep it in if he was me. He said he would spoil his sibling's Christmas/birthday presents when he was my age. :lol

Virtual Console earned 3.5 billion yen / $33 million / £16 million

A recent press conference in Tokyo shed some light on the astonishing success of the Virtual Console service so far.

Nintendo's own Shinji Hatano reiterated a previous figure of 7.8 million downloads and then went on to reveal that currently the service had generated 3.5 billion yen ($33 million / £16 million)

The humble Nintendo exec then saids of these figures, "We're currently unsure if this is a lot or low. They're not bad figures."

Considering that Nintendo haven't been transparent with the exact figures for what has been downloaded so far this vague statement is about as close as we might get to understanding just how successful the Virtual Console service has been so far. It seems certain by any standards that within a one year period the VC has delivered great returns for Nintendo and the companies who partner with them.

We at the VC:R look forward to another great year of releases in 2008!

Not doing too badly... I wonder how that 7.8 figure compares to the number of Wii owners online.

You realize that this obliges you to tell me the instant Earthbound is announced, correct?

No, just kidding, but if you could let us know when you do find out, that would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Another title to cockblock Shining Force II from being released. :/

Hudson games do nothing to block off Sega games, since they tend to come out on a weekly basis.

Besides, the final boss of DH is supposedly easier than the MW3 counterpart. Not to mention that DH is extremely rare in its original release.

I know there are a lot of people skeptical about VC's success and while Nintendo likely expected more sales from it, I can't imagine they've been completely disappointed. History has shown us that when a direction Nintendo takes fails to deliver early on, they'll typically abandon most subsequent effort and ride it out for whatever they can, rather than overhaul the service and attempt to revive it. Yet Nintendo seemed to push VC harder in the fall than they've done all year (imports, TGCD, NeoGeo). And while it seems like a simple service, perhaps it requires a greater investment than we all suspect. At the same time, unless Nintendo were to clear out the VC offering with their next console, the service can only move forward and not backward. Eventually it'll likely prove worth it. Not to mention that the existence of VC adds a lot of value for many gamers that would otherwise see the Wii as a complete waste.

While I don't pretend to understand the intricate legal ballet required to get third parties involved and the costs associated with running the service, I'm sure Nintendo and it's partners are more than happy with the muted success the Virtual Console service has seen. While it isn't free money for these publishers it's probably one of the simplest ways to reap profit in comparison to other downloadable services across the PC and consoles.

I am so interested in ZAMN. Too bad that I could never come close to beating it as a kid. The only way I could beat the game was to use a Game Genie for invinicibility and unlimited weapons, it was so much fun to use the bazooka nonstop though. :lol

I'm still pretty shocked the US hasn't got Megaman yet. Also BoF II without one.

I wonder if they'll throw out SSB next week as a bone. Though its more likely to follow in tradition and hit in the first week of February.

The only thing I disagree with in that post is the word "second". :D Thanks.

I have no clue why the US doesn't have Mega Man, but although the original SNES version of BOF1 was developed by Capcom, it was translated and published by Squaresoft, and a VC release would probably have to go through them, and they haven't been very supportive of the VC so far.

Man God said:

What sfog said about the original Breath of Fire. The game may belong to Capcom but the SNES translation is Square's work, so it was legally & technically easier to release the second game. Capcom will either have to negotiate with Square to get the first released or go through the trouble of popping in a new translation (the GBA version?), which is quite a bit more work than has been done for any VC release thus far.

As far as Mega Man is concerned, I'm sure they're saving it for 12/17/07 in North America now. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts it gets released that day. It would be nice if they released the other games I mentioned upthread as well, but at least the original will escape from the confines of PAL Land soon.

I remember watching a speed run of Monster World III after I had finished it and thinking wtf?!? Turns out it was someone playing the Japanese version and in that one the final boss
didn't have the spikes and shit below and looked infinitely easier than the one I had just completed.
:lol

If Dynatasic Hero has the other one like some have said, thats one good reason to play that version at least if you're trying to decide which to play.

This and the music (larger sampling of several pieces here) will be why I double dip.

...Actually, there could be a second long-shot reason, but the rights to Wonder Boy are convoluted enough that I'm not sure whether it applies. So I'll phrase it as two questions: is the possible translation of Monster World IV in the hands of Westone or Sega, and does Westone receive any of the revenue from Dynastic Hero and Monster World alike?

The slowdown is the only thing that allows me to get past the second level, let alone any farther. Normally I detest slowdown in games (though I'm more understanding for older games) but the slowdown in Gradius III is a downright Godsend.

Gah, it would have been nice to have had a third game, given that we already have a variant of Dynastic Hero on there.

If anyone hasn't played it or Wonderboy in Monster World, do so now!

Otherwise, I'll consider Baseball Stars 2. It's on Gametap's free selection of games at the moment :)

that's a shitload of money given how much it cost to produce them. Although I get a feeling that the majority of that pie goes to Nintendo and 3rd parties are getting crap returns.

It'd be interesting to know. I imagine we're not getting many MD third party games at the moment since a cut of the pie has to go to both Sega and Nintendo. We're still getting quite a few third party ones for the Turbo-grafx, but Hudson seem to be more keen about the service than Sega, so they're probably pushing it more.
