Official Brave Story: New Traveler thread

There wasn't much speech in the Japanese version in the first place.
Now that I think of it, there was no Japanese speech..... It was added for N.A. and that's just during Some cutscenes.

So are you calling Milky a liar?

It should also be noted that Brave Story lets you switch between English and Japanese voiceovers, which is good -- although the English dub is fine (if Saturday-morning-cartoon quality), the Japanese just sounds cooler.

There was speech in the Japanese version -- just not in the cut scenes. The majority of the game's voice work takes place during battle.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the clarification.

So was there Japanese voicework added during the cutscenes now? It'd be weird to have dual audio which features Japanese VA only in the battles and then English VA in cutscenes.

Maybe someone in here can answer my question from the other thread?

Wait... That IGN reviewer says he'd like to see his characters change appearance with different equipment, but I specifically remember duckroll saying that was a really neat feature of the game. Change their armor and they look different in battle, etc.

Am I missing something? Is that not really in the game?

That, I don't actually know.

Yeah, their appearance changes with new equipment. It's not as substantial as Tales of the World (which has different types of equipment for practically every limb), but you'll see the weapon or the outfit change when you get new stuff, I think.

EDIT- ^^^ cool

I'd like to know this as well. Its a real turnoff for me when I get an item and put it on, and my character is still wearing the same shit.

Cool, thanks. IGN never ceases to amaze

OP has been updated to include 1UP review. Was updated with the IGN and Siliconera reviews a couple days ago as well, but no one was talking about the game then, heh.

On the topic of Voice Acting:
The game has the option to change "battle voices" to English or Japanese. Cutscene voices are (incredibly rare, and) only available in English.

You link to all those reviews, but not my sites? I'm hurt :( We're at least as big as RPGamer, maybe. Maybe not. But we do spend a whole paragraph of the review complaining about the protagonist's hat. So there's that.

Just picked the game up from GameStop and he told me they only received one copy

Same here, my local GameStop got one only and I lucked out and got it. Made him go back into the back room and cut the box open :lol

If everyone wants this better get it now, could be a short-shipped one. Love the full color manual, looks to be very deep. Work can't end soon enough!

Ugh, I got an ugly email from Amazon. They said my copy wouldn't ship until August 23rd. Hah, I should probably cancel the order or something.

I'm very impressed with this game so far. The graphics are among the best I've seen on the PSP for sure. Yuno flicking her ears and the look of shock on her face sometimes is very well crafted.

Goalfinch battles are pretty fun, too. The little guys are pretty cute.

The game is great so far, but the beginning of the game drags on and on. Does it get better?

Oh yeah, at first I was like "WTF, you can't save in the world map?" It was pretty jarring for a while.

Picked up this and the PSP FFs as well. I'll be ripping them to mem stick shortly.

Lol. FFI PSP takes up a whopping 188 MBs on the UMD. What an utter travesty. I&II should have been on one disc, ala the GBA remakes...

Haha. WTF. FFII, 274 MBs. Brave Story, only 184! All three could have fit on one UMD, with plenty of room to spare! :lol

Brave Story is pretty tiny, yeah. I ripped it first thing.

I'm really impressed with the presentation. Dog is named Kratos....8-4 did the localization? Is that the translation from Japanese or some creative playing? :D

Do the main characters have default names?

Yeah. The female is Miki and the male is like Tsutaka or something. I changed my name, of course, but left Miki as is.

Like 155 MBs, compressed. :)

Thanks. Just starting up now. Manual seemed to suggest that you had to rename them, which made me think that they didn't have 'official' default names.

I picked up my copy today (along with Riviera, which I swore I wouldn't get double dipped on, but ****, it's Atlus, it's Sting, it's Riviera; I caved).

I'm enjoying it well enough so far, though the intro's a bit bland (as Kev said, an RPG staple). Graphics and visual presentation are really outstanding, and it really grabs you right from the start.

Maybe... not.

Wow,less than 200 mb....how did they do it?

LOL with some compression they could have crammed a comparably epic game on the DS.

95% of RPGs need a "skip first two hours" button.

Hell yeah they should, the slow moving text and lack of voice acting also make it quite unbearable.

Whoa! The graphics in this game are amazing. They got me wondering what Crisis Core is gonna be packing. This is a very pretty game. I just wish I could skip some of these pretty cutscenes right now. :( PEACE.

Wait till..
S.N.O.B.

The localization is pretty decent

I'm loving this game right from the start, its easily the best RPG I've played on the PSP for ages. Tales is going on the shelf for a bit. The dialogue font, the Batman-style "BAM" text in battles, the enemy design, the graphics, everything is just first rate. Awesome game.

edit - oh and Yuno is hot. :D

I can really see myself liking it more later than the game. The beginning is EXTREMELY slow and the story seems pretty lifeless so far. The graphics and battles are great though.

I like well translated dialog, but this sounds like it's treading the line between good localization and just arbitrarily changing stuff for a joke. I'll get it when it gets a PAL release either way, but please, translators, do your jobs. No more, no less. You'd be fired if you butchered a novel with your own idea of clever in jokes.

Nothing in the game was changed without the consent of the team, and it's actually quite an accurate translation. But thanks for the thought. :) We don't believe in changing stuff just for the sake of changing it, either.

I considered explaining the reasoning behind Kratos (it was Sasuke in Japanese), but it could start veering into spoiler territory, so I figured I'd wait until people have cleared the game. It's nothing major, but it was chosen for a reason -- not just to be funny.

How involving are the side quests? The whole bird catching/cockfighting elements? Any uber rewards/weapons worth striving for?

I know its a bit early to ask, but maybe someone whose imported the Japanese release can offer some input.

I really like that, more games need to have horizontal box art. I dont know why, but I just really like the idea of it almost being like a picture.

I like it too. I really love the character art for this game. You can see some more of it on the Japanese site: http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/bravestory/psp/index.html

Click on "Character" and then click on the little magnifying glass and you can check out the full artwork for every character. It's pretty hot.
