Official Brave Story: New Traveler thread

Picked this game up over the weekend... only a couple hours in, but I love it so far.

It's giving me the vibe I got the first time I played the SNES Final Fantasies and Crono Trigger.

And even dungeons are increasingly showcasing neat little details such as these. And you can't ever interact with any of them.

This is wrong, I've run into a number of dungeons where you can interact with objects that seemed to be part of the background at first glance (ie things that are not regular chests or related to puzzles). It's not very obvious, but it's there. :)

Ok need a bit of help here

I just reached that firewyrm island and there was something about going to a wizard i have searched every where, does anyone know where he is.

East of Vahadina.

Finally got this over the weekend and I've been playing it every chance I get. Loving it so far, the battle system is a little gem, simple and fast paced. I love to grind in my RPGs and the battle system lends a good hand to that.

Picked this up today but haven't played it yet (no PSP, yet...) but I was just wondering what the hell was with the terrible manufacturing of the cover and the manual? Mine looks like it was printed at home on someone's printer. The paper isn't glossy, it's matte and there's bleeding all over the place.

Is XSEED really on such hard times? The guy at EB indicated that all the rest were like this, too. It was factory sealed.

My box art is printed on the usual, higher quality glossy paper.

Horrible box art and design though.

Did you see that Wild Arms Vth Vanguard thread? XSEED have incredibly horrible designs. I think the worst thing is that they can't see it for themselves. Some of the worst aesthetic taste I've seen.

I just received the XSEED Newsletter, and in it they wrote this about the lower quality manual and cover:

XSEED Newsletter said:
And to our Canadian fans who purchased a copy of Brave Story: New Traveler, it has come to our attention that the quality of the paperstock on our Canadian retail units is not of a quality that we, or fans of XSEED Games, expected. Upon investigating the matter, it appears that there was a miscommunication at the Canadian printer which caused this problem and our Canadian partner is working closely with us to try to correct the issue.

In the meantime, anyone who has already purchased Brave Story: New Traveler in Canada can write into us at support@xseedgames.com to request the same high-quality color manuals and coverslip that our US fans received. To have us ship it to you, please provide your Canadian shipping address and list the retail store and town that you purchased your copy from for our tracking purposes. We apologize for the inconvenience and assure our Canadian fans that this situation will be corrected on all future XSEED Games releases.

It's cool I say, altho in my case not so much, since I don't live in Canada (I only import games from there) and so I wont be able to get the fixed versions.

Down looking for the desert ruins and the game is offering a decent challenge now, a Crazed Rabby is one tough mofo, and the battle music has really grown on me now too.

Ah, so the cover was a local Canadian issue. Interesting.

I was going nuts there for a second, removing the covers from various PSP cases and comparing their feel. :D

**STARTLING REVELATION**

If you listen to the song that plays when you highlight the game icon in the XMB, they play a complete ripoff of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme.

I thought the same thing.

my copy landed in the uk a few days ago. wonderful game. And finally a handheld gamethat keeps my attention longer than an hour and then never touched again.

Crap, I've paired up with Mitsu-whatsit under the ruins and I can't find a way out - what am I missing?
The way out?
Seriously, it's not that big a dungeon and I don't remember there being anything special to miss. If you still don't find it, just always go to the right (or left) :D

Lol, I'm sure I was doing that. First I tried all left turns, then I tried all right turns - and you're right it doesn't seem like a big dungeon so I must be missing an exit somewhere or something equally naff. Cheers anyway.

I just passed that part myself, if you go towards the middle of the level you'll see a stairway up and a stairway down. The one leading upwards is the one you are looking for. The downstairs leads to a large room with one chest in it, nothing too special in there I recall...

I'm on Chapter 10 now, and after awhile....meh. Sorry. It is a good game, with great presentation and some excellent RPG ideas put together well, but it's very light on story or character development, it's very short, and it's very easy. I'll probably finish it today, and I didn't need to complete any side quests or really get into making accessories (which was cool in concept, but not necessary for success in the game). A good JRPG should make you have to do those things for the additional exp or items, neither of which I needed.

Plus things took a turn for the worse when I got the 4th Gemstone and
My sword turned into a red dragon penis!
:D

It's kinda like a cliffs notes version of a final fantasy game.

It's good, but I was hoping for more depth, customization, character development or difficulty.
7.0

Does anyone wanna take a picture of the crappy canadian manual? I wanna see how bad it really is. :D

No, but I will take a picture of the really cool book and AOS's name plastered all over it!

According to Viz.com, the U.S. version of the novel was translated by none other than NeoGAF favorite/interstellar traveler Alexander O. Smith (of Final Fantasy XII fame)

And Vagrant Story! I agree wholeheartedly with that review. At first, I thought it was just another generic rpg, but I really like the character designs and the battles are quickly paced. Looking forward to finishing this one.

I'm having fun with the game despite its flaws and little annoyances (VK is still the game I've liked the most on PSP), but if there's one thing that leaves me in a WTF state it is that stupid birdbrawl minigame.
I had one match with 3 of my birds left and only 1 for the opponent... and I lost because my birds kept ignoring that lone bird. They were too busy circling around doing nothing.... or hitting each other.

I just got this game yesterday (darn Amazon about being bad about preorders.) I can't believe I've died already >.> The only RPG where I've died this early is SMT: Nocturne

Oh, I knew I forgot to say something...
This game is a bit too easy. Not like RPGs are ever difficult, but I've never hit a game over screen until now and I'm a way into chapter 7.

I actually just got annihilated in chapter 11. The game does get more difficult, especially if you stop doing all the bazillion little sidequests.

My biggest complaints are the text speed (too damn slow) and the voice acting (terrible in both languages). If there were "show all text immediately instead of Xenogearsing it" and "shut the fuck up in battle" options I'd be much happier.

The story is pretty boring, but that's what it looked like it would be.

You can make all of the text show up at once using the circle button. I found that out early in the game cuz I couldnt stand the slow speed.

Not good enough. Hitting circle also advances to the next text box if it isn't printing, this has caused me to inadvertently skip over several dialog boxes. Just make the text appear instantly.

Very fun so far. playing a hour here and there. I am at chapter 4. A bit easy, but really entertaining

wow. will definitely pick this up to play on the train.

hum , maybe a dumb question, but why is the girl always attacking first , even if shes not the #1 in my party?

AGI decides who attacks first, altho someimes Tatsuya could end up attacking first even with a difference of 10 AGI (not sure why this happens).

Ok, I'm in the swamp right now after Paulta. How much more of this game do I have left? I'm trying to beat it before I get Jeanne D'Arc.

Not too long. There are
11 chapters
if that helps.

Well, I finally experienced my first game over while doing what I think is the optional dungeon. I got in a fight with Sheng and the cheater with his 2 attacks per turn ended up taking me down (I helped him too summoning Vyne while thinking that doing that the bastard would have boosted his ATK forcing me to defend and wasting the summon and what do you know? That's exactly what he did...).
Also trying to beat the little girl at birdbrawl is making me hate this mini-game even more than I already do.

Yeah, I never beat Sheng. I don't see some clever strategy that I could implement in order to take him down. It seems like you just need to level a ton to beat him, and I've got better things to do then spend 3-5 hours grinding.

So I'm pretty much just trying to power through this game (i don't like it very much, but it's a decent enough handheld RPG) and I had some questions.

Is that hospital the last area? I sure as hell hope so because I want to beat it tonight. And are having a party consisting of level 40's sufficient for beating the game? I don't want to grind at all.

It's not the final area, no. You have some ways to go.

Just hit chapter 10 this morning, I'm loving some of the big boss fights. My battle with Helldegarde went for nearly a whole train trip - Brave is such an awesome portable RPG, its got me excited about the PSP all over again.

So, finally defeated the last birdbrawling girl by repeating the battle over and over until by pure luck I came out victorious to be presented, after completing my feathers collection and a certain quest, to such an awesome prize! The
hidden goalfinch spot with brown birds! So now I have a party of super duper useless birds that can destroy anything with their 20+ to all stats when I don't need it anymore....
. I want the head of the people that thought of and coded that mini-game. Such sadistic bastards.

Btw, also went and finished the game (even the last boss was a pushover tho).
Have to say I liked the script and the localization. Light hearted story with a likeable cast, funny jokes most of the time and the ending having such a blatant push for the movie was laugh worhty.
Now just a couple quests, the accessory list, 3 monsters for the book and Sheng are all that is left for me, until I get back to my Valhalla Knights powerquest.

I haven't done any bird-brawls other than the first one, I've only got two birds and they always get their asses kicked and I don't know where to get anymore.

Is there any reason why my Meladee and Yuno are dealing like 1 damage apiece in the final dungeon? They are in the high 40's and my main character's damage is unaffected. What's the deal?

I didn't have that problem, but then again when I've reached the last dungeon my main party was in the high 70 / low 80 (and got to that level simply by not fleeing battles/trying to get enough stuff to make all the various accessories). My only problem is with my Meladee doing 1 damage to metal monsters while my Yuno and my Tatsuya do 40ish with normal attacks (bravura attacks do more for them, but it's still 1s for Meladee).
