A couple notes from the game yesterday courtesy of Ives Galarcep:
Mexico really has no class. When the US loses at Estadio Azteca they take the loss like men. I really don't remember the last time the Mexican players shook hands with us after they lost. Either way it's good for us. They can keep blaming a curse or whatever instead of wasting time trying to correct themselves.

As a way of explanation (but not necessarily justification), I found it interesting that Mexican players don't shake hands or exchange uniforms after derby matches in the Mexican League. It's just not something that they do - some of it has to do with them hating us and part of it is just cultural.

Here's Grant Wahl's comments about it:

Grant Wahl said:
Mexican Soccer Lesson #2: To Understand Mexican Rivalries You Must Understand Ardido. As the teams leave the field at the end of the Clásico Tapatío I notice a familiar sight. Not one of the players shakes hands. Nobody trades his jersey. I've seen this before, of course, whenever the U.S. and Mexican national teams meet each other. When I ask my friend, the journalist Miguel Ángel Briseño of Reforma, about it, he mentions the word ardido -- a sort of rageful pride or courage that's common among Mexican soccer players.

For years I have tried to understand why great players like Rafael Márquez would spear Cobi Jones with his head in the final moments of Mexico's 2002 World Cup elimination, or why Oswaldo Sánchez would try to cut down Eddie Johnson following the U.S.'s second goal in Phoenix last February. Now, after watching the way the Chivas and Atlas players respond to their rivalry, I have a much clearer idea. Later, I track down what Sánchez told Mexican reporters about the incident in Phoenix.

"It gives me a lot of courage," he said, "because they make fun of us and enjoy it. It makes me angry that they make fun of me, it's true, and much more that they make fun of my country. Therefore I gave him a kick of ardido (rageful pride)." Ardido. I don't have to like the explanation -- nor did coach Hugo Sánchez, who replied, "one must maintain his form. I'll speak with him to avoid situations like this." -- but at least now I understand the phenomenon. It's not so much about the Americans (although that's certainly part of it) as it is about the way Mexican players treat all their most heated rivalries.

hadareud - thanks for all of the continued Arsenal updates. I've been avoiding reading about it most of the weekend as my laptop has been acting up and I was focused on the US-Mexico game. It's good news that Grimandi might be taking the director of football position, and even better that Wenger might be considering an extension. It helps take some of the pain away from the Henry transfer.

Of interest, I ran into my brother-in-law over the weekend. He's a massive ManU fan (grew up in Cork, therefore loves Keano) and told me that he thought 16 million was too high a fee for Henry. I was surprised, but he said that he thought Henry was a bit past his prime, injury prone, and almost 30, so Arsenal were wise to take the money they could get. Interesting comments from a non-Arsenal-fan and somewhat heartening, though I can't say that I completely agree with him.

Needless to say, it'll be an interesting few weeks as an Arsenal fan - I still haven't read any comments on the Henry transfer from Wenger or any of the players. It's time to stand up and back the team, so I'm hoping we'll hear something soon.

Yeah I feel the same way now. He is turning 30 in August. The Premiership is a tough league. It's not like the Spanish and Italian leagues, it's much more physical in my opinion. I don't think he would have been able to perform as well in England with his increasing risk of injury and increasing age. Spain might be a nice fit for him.

I was thinking about this as well. Henry endured a torrid season injury wise, and in a league as physical as the EPL, there's nothing to say this wouldn't have continued. While in Spain not only is that brand of football less physical, but he's the number one target a team will stick two players on non-stop, with all the other weapons Barca possesses. This'll give Henry even more time and space to operate, and a chance to play for four or five more years at the top of his game, instead of two or three years with Arsenal. It also gives him a chance to play in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa if he so desires (I reckon that would have some significance for him), instead of retiring from international duty to preserve his body.

I also think Henry looks at what Barca has, and realizes that him joining that outfit makes up (in theory) one of the most fearsome foursomes of all time. He's playing with arguably the best player of the last five years, the best young player in the world, and the best pure striker in the world. It's an incredibly tempting situation to be a part of. It also helps that their style of football almost mirrors our own.

I always believed last year that if Arsenal had won the Champions League, that Henry would've joined Barcelona because he never would've been able to top that moment. But since Arsenal lost (and more importantly, since Barcelona won), Henry didn't want to look like a glory hunter and join a team that had lifted both the league and CL trophies. This year they didn't win a trophy (yeah they were tied on points with Madrid, but everyone acknowledges they had an off year compared to the last couple seasons), so it makes moving to Barcelona easier to do, without appearing like a glory hunter.

So I think all of these things came into play...in some ways the Dein thing might well be nothing more than a convenient excuse. I also think Henry got the sense that some in the Arsenal board and even Wenger himself figured that it'd be better for the club to cash in now. It's nothing callous or spiteful, it's just business.

In other news that comes as a surprise to no one, Fabregas was selected by Arsenal.com voters as the player of the year with 60% of the vote. So I suspect he'll join Real Madrid tomorrow.

Breaking news: Henry is damaged goods!!!

La Liga - Henry passes Barca medical despite hiccup

Eurosport - Mon, 25 Jun 15:41:00 2007

La Liga - Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has passed a medical at the Camp Nou despite evidence of a groin problem that requires treatment, club doctor Ricard Pruna has announced. He will be unveiled by the club at a 17:00 BST press conference.

Henry arrived in the Catalonian capital on Sunday evening and underwent the examination on Monday amid a heavy presence from both the media and supporters. He is set to put pen to paper on a four-year deal.

"He has passed all the tests satisfactorily," Barcelona team doctor Ricard Pruna told the club's official website. "There are no problems, everything is in order. Henry has no injury or after-effect that prevents him from joining the club.

"We paid particular attention to the groin area because we are aware of the problems he has had there. We believe it is due to an imbalance in the muscle groups in the area.

"He will undergo a special programme in Paris to redress the imbalance in the area so that he can join up with the rest of the team on July 21st."

Henry earlier spoke of the reasons for his decision to join the Blaugrana.

"It is incredible. I am looking forward to playing in the Camp Nou and helping the team in every way I can.

"The most important thing that made me come [here] is the way Barca plays, the fans and the support they give. Without good fans it is difficult to have a good team and vice versa.

"Their style of play has attracted me.

"Barca is more than a club. Everybody knows about Barca."

The former European and Spanish champions have moved to sign a player they failed to secure last summer after they faced him in the Champions League final.

Barca were hurt by the loss of their Liga title to arch rivals Real Madrid on the final day of the season.

Well I hope they're able to fix that, because it is something that's bothered him for a couple years now.

That thumbs up is a knife stab to Arsenal fans.

there we go, first Wenger comments:

Thierry Henry transfer to Barcelona agreed

Arsenal Football Club can confirm that Thierry Henry has agreed his transfer to Barcelona for an undisclosed fee.

Everyone at Arsenal would like to take this opportunity to recognise the massive contribution Thierry has made to the Club since joining in August 1999.

During his time at Arsenal, Thierry became the Club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 226 goals from his 370 appearances. He was also an integral part of the 2003/04 ‘unbeaten’ League season, won the Premiership twice, the FA Cup twice, the Premiership ‘Golden Boot’ four times, was voted the PFA Player of the Year twice and won the FWA Player of the Year on three occasions.

Everyone at Arsenal wish Thierry the best of luck for the future.

Speaking exclusively to Arsenal.com, Arsène Wenger said:

"Thierry has been tremendous for us since he arrived in 1999. He has excelled both as part of a team and individually. In short, he has become an Arsenal legend.

“Personally, I would like to thank Thierry for the huge contribution he has made to the Club's success over the past eight years. To his great credit, he has mixed skill and style together with an appetite for winning. This wonderful combination was integral to our historical 49 games unbeaten run and all the honours he won at Arsenal, together with Thierry becoming the Club's record goal scorer - an achievement which in my view is unlikely to be surpassed.

“It was Thierry's decision to leave Arsenal but he goes with my blessing. On behalf of everyone at the Club, we wish him the very best for the future."

i always wanted henry, if he ever left arsenal, to go to barca so i'm glad that turned like i hoped. i wonder how they'll play. i mean, you've got both henry and ronaldinho on your team and putting either of them on the bench...lol

will it even work?

Why do they always use selling Vieira as a good example of a Wenger decision? Since he left he has won the scudetto with Inter and Arsenal have won sweet FA. They also haven't been able to replace him in the the midfield strong man role, which has been pretty obvious.

most would agree that Vieira had his best days at Arsenal. He is still a very good player, but he isn't at the same level he was when he was here.

He found the perfect time to let Vieira the player go, maybe it was one year too early to let Vieira the captain go, if you know what I mean.

That and we kicked him and Juve out resoundingly in the Champions League.

Yup, that's Cruijff's legendary 14.

Let's hope he does that number proud, belongs to Europe's (and Top 3 world) best player ever.

Vieira played ~30 matches in the first season for Juventus after his transfer from Arsenal for €20m. Last season he only played ~20 matches for Inter after his transfer there for €9.5m, which was less than half what Juve paid for him. That's great he got a trophy and all, but let's not pretend he's the same player he was a few years ago.

Ummmmm, what's up with the caption?
4qn9j5i.jpg

He is a gringo and the star of the team. There's nothing offensive about it. Of course, it's not common at all to see that in a caption, but I'm guessing it's mexican TV.

I agree that its use is odd and unprofessional. In fact, just minutes ago, during the sports news the guy said, in spanish, of course: "... and so the gringos hoist the trophy once again." or something like that.

The term is never used as an offense, but it's strange to see it used by a professional, especially after just reading your post.

If you're called a yanqui or an anglo odds are that's almost always meant to be derogatory. Gringo can be, but I look at it as something easier to say than estadounidense.

Hopefully Hamburg will be able to find someone that wants to take Feilhaber on loan now....
:lol Oh Lando

Yes @ Hamburg sending Benny out on loan, I want to see him play more.

Benny Interest Expanding

by Greg Seltzer - June 25, 2007

The agent for US Gold Cup hero Benny Feilhaber says the crowd of suitors for the unsettled Hamburg prodigy has grown to include clubs from France and the Netherlands.

Fresh from a stunning volley winner to beat Mexico in Sunday's Gold Cup final, the former UCLA Bruin will now head off to join Bob Bradley's Copa América squad with sights set firmly on Thursday's Group D opener against Argentina in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

"We talked several days ago," Henner Janzen told American Soccer Daily. "I told him he can do his work (with the US National Team), and I will do my job here. He is doing great, and we will talk (after Copa América)."

"He had an interest from Switzerland. Now there are two teams in the Netherlands and one from France. They have made the initial contact, so we will see if these conversation deepen. After a good (Gold Cup showing), I am certain that good teams will be calling me with offers."

Several clubs in Germany had already checked into a season loan for Feilhaber, including Hannover 96 and second Bundesliga sides Cologne and St. Pauli. FC Basel were thought to be Swiss club pondering a swoop, while clubs such as Lille, Monaco and Paris St. Germain are busily trying to plug holes in the middle.

UEFA Cup entrants Heerenveen were in the original bidding when Hamburg inked Feilhaber two summers ago and could imagine pairing the midfield trickster with US central partner Michael Bradley. Meanwhile, Ajax could join the likes of FC Twente in searching for a new playmaker if Wesley Sneijder completes a move abroad as expected.

Where Feilhaber will end up for the new season remains a mystery, but it has become clear that a Hamburg return is not in the cards. HSV exec Dietmar Beiersdorfer appears set to deal away a previous plum signing at the behest of January sideline appointee Huub Stevens.

Beiersdorfer recently stated that the club would be willing to part with Feilhaber, who runs out of contract at the end of next season, for a cut rate believed to be in the €500,000 range. It remains to be seen whether or not the American's international performances could hike the price.

"I just spoke to the sport director," revealed Janzen on Monday. "Benny needs to proceed (in his development) and it wouldn't be a good thing to go back under the same conditions."

Feilhaber worked nine Bundesliga contests and three Champions League matches during the first half of the 2006/07 campaign under Thomas Doll, but was relegated to building his HSV II game total to 19 after Stevens arrived.
That fee seems low....I'm just sayin'.

I just wouldn't use the Vieira example that's all. Technically he also won the scudetto in 06 but it doesn't matter. Besides I don't think either clubs were under any illusion that when they bought him he was the same as at 26, they just count on him to still be influential, which he is. I also wouldn't discount winning trophies so easily, isn't that what they play for?

I don't think the loss of Alan Smith would be all that great. Apart from some crunching tackles and holding up the ball well (occasionally) he is not up to the standard of what a United striker should be, even backup. Rossi is still yet to prove himself, he was pretty lacklustre at Newcastle and whilst he did well at Parma it's still yet to be seen if he can do well in a tough, foreign league.

RSL got their first win of the season against DC? :lol :lol

LOL United

Oh wait, Findley helped them to the win. Stupid trade!
Yep I was so happy to see DC be the first team to lose to RSL. If you look at the Eastern Conference table it's ridiculous. 9 points separate first from last. Also, someone has to explain why Dallas plays so many damn games.

I just found it odd and unprofessional that they used that term. It's slang and considered by some (but not all) to be derogatory. That was on Univision, by the way. I'm not terribly offended or anything. Here's the wikipedia take on "Gringo". Seems like the meaning varies from country to country and person to person.

It just means north american.

Its hard to explain because its not used in the english language.

The closest example I can think of would be calling someone Dutch even though their country is Holland or Netherlands. You dont say Hollish, you say Dutch. You dont say americano, you say gringo.

In portuguese, people from Rio de Janeiro are Cariocas, people from São Paulo are Paulistas.

Here's the "Points Per Game" table for MLS. A little more accurate than the real thing at the moment....
Code:
Single table - ranked by points per game
Includes games played 6/24

TEAM GP	PTS	PTS/GM	CHANGE SINCE LAST WK

1. NE 12	22	1.83 +2
2. NY 12	21	1.75 NC
3. HOU 13	22	1.69 +4
4. KC 12	20	1.67 -3 (GD: +6)
5. FCD 15	25	1.67 +1 (GD: -2)
6. CHV 11	17	1.55 -2 (GD: +3)
7. DCU 11	17	1.55 -2 (GD: +2)
8. CHI 12	14	1.17 +2

9. COL 13	15	1.15 -1 (GD: -4)
-. CLB 13	15	1.15 +3 (GD: -4)
11. TOR 12	13	1.08 -2
12. LA 10 9	0.90 -1
13. RSL 12 9	0.75 NC
Current playoff seeds and matchups if it started today (I think):

1 NE vs 8 CHI
2 HOU vs 7 DCU
3 NY vs 6 CHV
4 FCD vs 5 KC

The evil of United... unites us all as one people, even traditional enemies like New Yorkers and Angelenos.

The cluster **** in the east sucks for fans (well at least their nerves, parity is inherently exciting). In the west you have good teams and crappy teams so there's no worry about putting more than the minimum 1 team into the playoffs.

I think DC United was made for the purpose of being the team everyone hates. The black uniforms, the crest that's similar to the Third Reich, and winning more MLS Cups than anyone else. They're so easy to hate and their arrogant fanbase makes it even easier.

The latest trade rumor in MLS is that Kevin Goldthwaite is coming to New York in exchange for Todd Dunivant. I really hope this is not true for the Red Bulls have given up too many points due to a shaky defense. The defense was shaky in those games because players like Dunivant and Freeman were injured. Dunivant would be severely missed, but the guys on Metrofanatic are thinking this has to do with Arena trying to get one last player before contracts are made final on July 1st. Since Goldthwaite only makes 31k and Dunivant makes 100k we make 69k out of it and if we get rid of someone like Schopp we can get someone for 244k. Who knows what'll happen.

We'll always have 2005, Dunivant. <3

Nice GIF's, hadareud. Right click-save as...

In other news, apparently Trezeguet has re-signed with Juventus until 2011, so he's off the table now.

Babel confirmed in the media that Arsenal has been fishing, and that he might go. But not this season. He'll play for Ajax 2007/2008

that's a bit disappointing. Although maybe it's for the best and he needs another year to be ready.

Huntelaar it is then!

The "new" Milton Keyners are. I don't agree with the whole moving of club thing but it's done so get on with it I guess. I keep a cursory glance on their league position but that's about it.
