Cheer up, Miner. The Fire didn't get knocked out of Cup play by the freakin' RICHMOND KICKERS. :lol

MLS teams are dropping like flies in the cup. What's going on here?

I know my team is the only one that takes the competition seriously enough not to field a complete reserve side, which will probably make it all the more embarrassing losing to the Carolina "Railhawks" this Sunday. :lol

Seriously though, MLS teams should not be losing to 3rd division teams, even if it is reserves playing.

Japan misses 2, Czech misses one and the clearly inferior team goes forward.

ANyone else surprised the games were on so late? Ended at 11pm local time, which is pretty late for Canada

Metzelder presented...

Pepe today and Saviola in the next few days. Drenthe is supposed to be really close and would be presented next week.

Edit:

Don't know if you guys have heard, but Pepe's signing has been quite controversial because Madrid is paying Porto 30m, which seems pretty ****ing ridiculous. Anyway, Sport, Barca's unofficial newspaper is reporting that there's a three way deal between Real, Porto and Chelsea, where Madrid pays 12m for Pepe and the other 18m goes to Porto as payment of the debt Chelsea still has with the portuguese for the Carvalho transfer. The latter amount, of course, means Robben will be heading to Spain.

Sounds far-fetched, but I find the idea very entertaining, instead of believing that they actually payed that kind of money for such an unproven player.

Yay OT is back!

Now onto to the Copa America.

:(

This loss was a real shame. A lot of players had solid games and Mexico I would say had the better 1st half and early 2nd, BUT one player (goalkeeper) cost the game.

We probably could have avoided those 2 ARG goals had Ochoa been between the posts. Everytime that idiot Sanchez comes out the box it's always a disaster. It's time for him to sit down and give Ochoa his time to shine. That combined with some bad luck tonight (I recall exactly 3 shots of Mexico's hitting the crossbar) and of course Argentina just having more talent, it wasn't in the cards.

Oh and Uruguay got robbed. They should have been able to re-kick that last penalty as Doni stepped off his line. In all fairness though, Uruguay did have a chance to put the game away on the 6th kick I believe.

Would have been nice to see URU or MEX get through to the final, as it is I'm sure the final will be boring as hell.
Remember that I told you that Mexico had not really faced a good rival yet? It is true that Mexico at least deserved a goal, but Argentina was just vastly superior and also lost 2 obvious situations. I wish all teams had taken their main squads to this tournament (like Argentina) because it is hard to obtain good conclusions from these matches.

Updated Liverpool Price guide for Benayoun Transfer

Proven Premiership Player: 10m
Israelli National Captain: +5m
Liverpool buying: +8m
Plays for West Ham: -19m
Eggy is bald: +0.5m

Grand Total: 4.5million

Srsly. I cant believe we've let our only remaining creative player go for £4.5 million when he has 4 years to run on his contract. ****ing mercenary wankers.

I can't imagine that he will get much playing time there either, so what's the point.

4.5 million for him, 13.5 million for Babel. Eggboy is quite the negotiater

I watched the last friendly matches of bayern and it seems like we have a new dream offense. of course I'm talking about Klose and Toni. They are playing so good.

Liverpool continue their bad business. Everyone loses out. Benayoun is a poor signing for Liverpool, its a big loss for west ham and benayoun will hardly play, but I doubt he gives a ****. With his new paycheck he can wipe his arse with money.

is Ribery already playing as well?

Yes, and he is awesome. Easily the best player out of all the new signings. World class.

He's giving everything, even in the test game yesterday he was running on the pitch till the last second. He's a technical player with very good ball control and he is quite speedy too, he seems like he always has a lot of energy left.

The only negative so far is that I can see him getting a lot of yellow cards in the Bundesliga because of his aggressive playstyle.

I totally agree with you. His technical skills are damn impressive.

I think Benayoun, like Sidwell at Chelsea, will surprise people. I think he's a good signing...I'm just not sure about Babel. I've only seen him play up front and was quite impressed, but I've heard he's not as good on the wing.

If Chelsea sign Alves...I mean...what a title race we could have on our hands. Not to mention the Champions League, where we can throw in Barcelona, who have been equally impressive in the transfer market (Henry, Yaya Toure, Abidal, Gabriel Milito).

As if we didn't already know the Premiership is swimming with cash, we've already spent a record amount ever on transfers, double last year's entire total, and there's still a month and a half of the window to go.

-----

In Blackburn news, fantastically Legia Warsaw have been thrown out of the Intertoto Cup after they were losing 2-0 away to FK Vetra and their pathetic fans invaded the pitch 'cos they couldn't stand losing. So now we have Vetra in the next round.

Now I realise they were 2-0 down, so maybe they were the weaker side, but I'd still much rather play Vetra than Warsaw. The latter have Champions League experience, the former finished third in the Lithuanian league.

Apparently Henri Camara is going to leave Wigan for either Blackburn or Portsmouth. Given that Portsmouth have signed 2 strikers in the last couple of days, hopefully they'll either drop their interest or Camara will decide he has a better chance of starting games at Blackburn.

I really want him to join, have done for ages. I can't understand why Wigan would let him go, but I didn't understand why they let Roberts go either. He'd be perfect in combination with McCarthy...McCarthy is the natural finisher and great in the air, Camara is fast as **** and occasionally scores a wonder goal.

I'd be very happy with a McCarthy, Camara, Rigters and Derbyshire strikeforce next year.

I can't believe Liverpool payed some 18 million for Babel.:lol Talk about overpriced, he's hardly worth half at the moment.

They could've gotten Kone or Farfan for that kind of money.

I know - no one would have paid that kind of money for him. Not even Chelsea in the past.

-----------------------------------
I am getting all giddy for the Premiership. Everyone seems stronger than last year already and there's still time for one or the other transfer (in Arsenal's case there's still 2 or 3 new players coming in).

The spending is shocking though - most of that increase you mention comes from Man Utd and Liverpool, they could end up spending a combined 100 to 120 million, that's just ridiculous. Especially in Liverpool's case, as they really aren't getting anywhere near what they are paying for.

Arsenal's first game on Saturday against Barnett. Seems like we'll see Walcott, Hleb, Van Persie, Da Silva and quite a few others in action already.

Sorry for no Villa related news lately folks. I know you've been dying for it. Basically I fell over and cracked my head open so haven't been free to give you updates but here we go:

We've given a trial to some French U-21 keeper.

Excellent. Time well spent.

Woohoo. The OT is back online.

So the US managed to pull it out last night against Uruguay. Bring on Austria. There was a minor scuffle after the match last night when one of the Uruguayans took a swing (unprovoked) at Bradley. You stay classy, Cardaccio! I'll try to dig up some video on it.

Is Uruguay a violent country or something? Every team I've ever seen of theirs over the years has been ridiculously aggressive.

we were talking about the same thing yesterday. it's really odd.

Then I remembered the scandal game Italy vs Uruguay at some world cup with all those dirty fouls and people punching each other out. very strange

6 million apparently, bargain. I thought it was gonna be more like 7.5

so that's

7.5 Da Silva
6 Sagna
2.5 Fabianski
2 Nordtveit
-------------
18 million spent so far

We're also on the verge of accepting 8 million for Reyes (not great) and Freddie could be gone for 6, so that's an intake of 30 million pounds.

12 million left without having spent any money - I guess we'll see one more signing. Martins? Still doubt it.

hadareud said:
we should still use it for games I think
Sounds good to me. We can give it a shot on Saturday for Austria - US. :D

Was the last time we played you guys in a major competition our total capitulation that was WC 1990? We've had a few friendlies in recent years, but I think that was the most recent match that meant something.

yeah it was. I was 10 back then, but I remember that it was a shitty game and Austria won 2:1 and they were lucky.

We scored a very nice goal though from memory, but I can't find a clip anywhere

I remember that game, too. I was in middle school. Didn't Austria have someone sent off, but they still pulled it out playing a man down? The US was godawful that tournament. The kids that played there provided the backbone for our team for quite a few years, but so many of them were straight out of college in Italia 90. Totally out of their depth, but it was a good learning experience.

you're right, I didn't remember that. Sent off in the 34th minute no less.

Austria didn't live up to the expectations either. Then again, they hardly ever do.

The translation of Gallas' comments is now up on his official website. It does sound strangely different now:

My diary

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

There’s no escaping it, the holidays are over… The three weeks have flown by and it’s back to work now as my training starts with Arsenal on Wednesday.

It’s an opportunity for me to meet the new arrivals, get to know them and to see my team-mates from last year again.

I’m well aware that I’ll probably be an even more important leader in the Arsenal team in the 2007-2008 season.
Now that Thierry Henry has left, I’m one of the most experienced players in the group along with Jens Lehmann. I’ll therefore have a big responsibility to guide the younger players and advise them on how to approach matches, handle fatigue and pressure…

However, let’s not forget that we’ve got a lot of sporting ambitions and that we’re going to do everything we can to win a title this season, either the Premier League, the Carling Cup, the FA Cup or the Champions League. I’m sure it’s going to be a big year for Arsenal!

So my fabulous holiday in Guadeloupe is now behind me but it gave me a chance to rest and recharge my batteries to the full. I’m back in England feeling rested and ready for the new season…

hmmmmm ....

So what does everyone think Beckhams chances of making MLS major news are?

For my money the only way he wont get very far if LAG aren't massively successful...any chance of that whatsoever?

Premier League clubs have splashed £284m already this summer - their biggest spree ever, more than double at the same stage last year and almost three times of that in 2005. (The Sun)

That's ****ing obscene...

Er...pardon my obscene language.

Recorded the Argentina/Mexico and Brazil/Spain matches last night and, as I was out on a date. Messi's goal was simply brilliant. Brazil also scored a fantastic first goal, as the first half ended with 3 goals in the last five minutes. :lol Spain wound up getting that third goal, which I guess was key.

The funny thing is that I'm still watching this match, and at the 69 minute mark it's still 2-1 Brazil. Which means they gave up three goals in the last twenty minutes. :lol Just sad.

I'm not sure what Beckham will do long term, but for the short term the buzz he'll generate on his road games will be simply insane.

I'm humming and hawing over splashing out $150 for the August 5th match, which I believe will be his first proper MLS game. The thing I don't want to do is pay this money, then find out Beckham gets a bad knock in the Chelsea game and isn't able to play for like six weeks. :lol On the other hand if I wait too long I won't be able to pay any less than 200 bucks. It's a tough call.

I'm going to Liverpool tomorrow, other than get smashed / drunk / pissed, I'm going for a tour of Anfield. I hope I bump into Rafa ::::::::::::::::o **** I need to bring a piece of paper and a pen!

If you see Yossi Benayoun could you please kick him in the nuts for me, and call him a mercenary wanker in your best cockney accent? thx.
