Official iPhone/iPod Touch Thread: Part Deux!

Not open for further replies.
Woo, posting from my iPod Touch! This GAF webapp is great.

Anyways, I got my Touch about three weeks ago, so I'm still a bit OCD when it comes to cleaning (the thing is a fingerprint and dust magnet)- I'm sure that in a month or two I won't care as much, although I've noticed that if the screen gets too dirty it can be hard to move one's fingers around it, as they begin to drag :/. Other than that I'm really enjoying the device- I've downloaded quite a few apps (most of which I got for free, thanks to looking out for sales/price drops- 148apps.com and toucharcade.com are quite useful in this regard) and around 400 songs, and I am far from reaching the memory limit (16 GB). One app I've particularly become addicted to is DinoSmash- an online multiplayer game where dinosaurs fight each other with gun and hammers. What ii lacks in content (not that many maps to play on) it makes up for in sheer franticness. I suggest for everyone to at least try the lite version. Other good games include Backbreaker and Music Quiz (the latter of which is free).

I'm good either way, but a dedicated jailbreak thread would maybe be for the best. Esp for those who don't want anything to do with it.
I agree. As a non-jailbreaker, I don't care to see conversations that hold nothing of interest to me. Good job on the OP.

One thing I disagree on though is not needing a screen or a case. When I got my 3GS, I rolled commando for a while, and after a few months, I noticed scratches on the screen and minor dings on the body. This is from carrying it in my pocket and not dropping it. After that, I went back to a screen protector and case (incase) which is form-fitting and hard plastic.

My touch only has a case around the metal body. Front of the screen has 0 scratches, no clue how you guys ding yours up so damn much. I just couldn't live with fingerprints/scratches on the back :lol

Excellent thread, OP. I'm subscribed and I see that the old thread is shut down. Still, I'll have to finish reading through the original on my journey of experiencing the various iPhone launches up until the creation of this soon to be megathread.

I thought neither the Iphone nor Ipod had GPS but both had A-GPS (using cellphone towers and wifi triangulation) and not true satellite GPS?

A-GPS means assisted GPS. It's better than just GPS, it uses a real GPS chip but it is aided by the internet to get a faster lock on satellites etc.

Only the iPhone 3G and 3GS have A-GPS (or GPS, for that matter).

The OG iPhone, iPod touch 1G, 2G and 3G have location services, but not GPS related.

OK cool thanks for the info. Does the Iphone A-GPS work without a network connection?

close the old thread!

and to juice lamenting that the old thread was a jailbreak guide, enthusiast message board + iphone is gonna equal a lot of jailbreak talk. it's not illegal.........(is it?)

Push come to shove, jailbreak is a DMCA violation. Apple's just smart enough to not take it to that extreme.

Anyway, the reason I hated the old thread was because the jailbreak conversation dominated the discussion at times; I'd rather have a separate "Official iPhone Jailbreak/Unlock/Homebrew" thread, like we do for PSP or Wii on the gaming side. Having them interleaved like this is just frustrating.

Yes, it will function like a regular GPS in that case. Of course, to make use of it, it's needed a GPS app with offline maps (like TomTom for example), because stuff like Google Maps is network based.

As a non-jailbreaker, I neverminded the discussion. It kept the thread lively, and was a good way to keep up with tidbits on what was going on.

I also agree with a separate Jailbreak thread.

Nope, wifis is all good.

I will post here from now on. I hope I don’t forget if the old thread keeps getting bumped. :lol

edit: I fucking love reading the Doubting Thomases posting on page 1 of the old thread :lol
so little understanding of what the smartphone market needed.
Boy you ain't kidding.

Though I think I remember an older thread than that that's even funnier. Lots of 'this thing will bomb'.

And that stalker guy was a little too, uh, enthusiastic, but he turned out to be right on a few things though.

Most of iPhone GAF didn't choose the iPhone over the iPod touch because of the Phone app.

I don't want to be locked into a contract with a phone carrier just for some slightly different features the iPHONE had to offer.

Yeah, I liked the discussion as well (as a non-jailbreaker). I like having all the iPhone news/discussion in one big thread.

I'm not sure if that generalisation is true.

I bought an iPhone to consolidate my devices, but that's kind of buying an iPhone for the phone.

To be honest, I don't get great reception (but I moved here and am on T-mobile), and I don't make calls or receive calls (gotta have friends, right?), but I do use text messaging a lot, which is still a feature of the phone.

On the other hand, I didn't buy it for these features, but they certainly factored into the move from ipod to iPhone: GPS, camera, speaker, microphone. Note, I moved from an iPod touch 1st gen to a 3G. I possibly would've bought an iPhone over an iPod touch had they been available in NZ at the time. That said, I didn't buy an iPhone until I found out I was able to get it on no contract.

What a ridiculous comment. Such shallow thinking. Is this how you normally approach life?

I think Rubx should add jailbreaking information in the OP. At least a link to a source that stays updated.

Just a note: The OP says some software updates cost $10 on the Touch. In fact the 3.1 update reduced that price to $5 (and I believe remains the current pricing on system updates for Touch users).

Question friends: I'm looking for a decent turn-by-turn app. Motion-X looks pretty damn impressive, but I'm not a big subscription fan.

What I really need is a Turn-by-turn iPhone app with Bluetooth streaming audio (A2DP). Surely one of them must support this? It's not safe to just lean over and try to listen to the tinny speakers.

Perhaps I'm mistaken but I thought the new TomTom dock did that. Although it's CRAZILY overpriced.

recommendations: best/cheapest case for a 64GB iPod Touch, pls?

i have one incoming, and am leaning towards the Otterbox, or Switchback Rebel, but am unsure! :'(

Thanks for this thread. I was afraid of the other massive one.

Quick question, is there an alternative for itunes for the iphone? I absolutely loathe iTunes, I'm just wondering if there's an alternative that allows me to install applications and such? I know Winamp can do the music, but how do I get the applications on there?

This is for a Windows 7 machine. I am coming THIS close between the iphone or the HTC Hero. iTunes is the deal breaker.

You don't need iTunes for applications. If you have WiFi, you can just download straight to your phone. But honestly, iTunes is tied in so heavily to the iphone, you're probably better off with another phone if you hate it that much.

You can't go wrong with an Android. My only problem with HTCs are the chins - they ruin the look of the phones.

hopefully a better battery life if the 3G chip can be optimized (I think it’s still the same as last year’s model)
Hell, with the battery life saved just making the move to OLED screens, they might not even need to optimize the 3G chip's power use but probably will anyways to claim TWICE THE BATTERY LIFE in their press releases.

I need them to drop the at&t exclusivity and make a cdma version so their can be a phone on verizon/sprint. Prefer cdma to gsm any day.

I said it in the last thread, and I'll say it again... don't bet the farm on a CDMA iPhone when it would be cheaper for Apple to open it up to T-Mobile by just adding another GSM frequency band to the chip. It also opens up the phone for other carriers using the AWS 1700MHz spectrum, meaning more options available without 2 separate hardware SKUs.

*Please add to OP:

-When receiving a call, to silence (if phone is on loud) press power button once
-To reject the call, press power button twice

I got more, I just need to think

Come on, the jailbreak stuff is pretty harmless, and it hardly dominated the old thread. What dominated the old thread was idiots showing off their awful bling themes and retards asking about what case they should entomb their phone in.

Oh and remember kiddies, the DMCA is American law, not planetary law, and doesn't apply to all users of this message board.

Since this thread is new, here's a topic: what do we expect/want from the next generation of iPhone next year? Just another performance increase or more significant hardware upgrades? I must admit I'm already struggling to think what else they can get this thing to do... :lol

-Improved camera, 3.2mp +
-New design, just something different!
-All 3GS enabled speeds across the board
-32GB base standard
-Improved email features, like "Mark all as read"
-iChat

These two are HUGE fuck ups for me with the iPhone

1) If I send a group txt, then the replies come back individually i.e. If i send a txt to Mike, Dave and Joe, instead of receiving it under my Outgoing txt entry, it will come back individually
2) PRESS SPACE BAR THREE FUCKING TIMES FOR A COMMA!! I HATE HATE HATE writing with so many full stops. It's not even in the 1st screen, you have to go into a sub menu for the comma!

Other than that, ummm I don't think that much bothers me about the iPhone. best phone I've evr had, and I've had over 30 different phones.

So you send a txt to 3 people, receive a reply from Mike, and you want to reply to Mike by sending another txt to Mike, Dave and Joe ?

Why would you want it to work like that ? How would the iPhone know when to put the txt's back under individual names as opposed to your weird system ?

It's not weird at all, a lot of the Ericssons (before Sony) and Nokia's had the feature. If I recall correctly:

-You send a msg to 3 people
-You get a reply under Outgoing, from mike
-You then select to reply to Mikes txt, or send another group txt out

I can't remember the phone, I think it was the 3210/3300 that did it, but it was the best multi user text feature I have used. Quite useful for things like going out or holiday info, you can keep the grouped messages under one thread, and even possibly rename that thread.

Edit* This could be a good thing for aple to do. For example: When you get a txt with a number or email in it, you get an arrow on the right hand side, with a sub menu. What you could do for the group txts, is add one of those sub menu arrows, and have the option "Reply to Mike", then you can reply individually, or if you wanted to send more info via a group txt, just type as normal in the text bar

Would everyone here declare themselves as an iPhone power user? If not what do you use your phone for?

Personally, I am using it as a replacement for a Blackberry from work, so all my emails are through that (hence my disdain for the email client on the iPhone), use it heavily for web browsing, SSH and terminal administration too

More tips I remember:

-On your home screen, to scan through different pages, just hit the bottom corner, rather that the stupidly rubbish dragging motion
-This Took me ages, I thought it was a bug. But Zoom in using a single finger double tap..Use 2 fingers to zoom back out
-The full stop button has a submenu when you hold it in Mail, adds .com, .org, etc
-This one I found out last week. but in your iPod app, you have songs, artists, etc in the bottom row. But I always play my music via albums, so I had to go to more, then albums. But you can just hit More>top left Edit then on the black screen, just drag and drop what you want into the bottom icon bar

Gaming buttons? :P

Just wanted to wish this thread well from the Android side of things. Competition is always fantastic.

I'd like an f'ng notification LED light like the blackberrys have. OR an AMOLED(?) screen that allows you to only light up certain parts and have notifications done that way. I'm seriously considering a blackberry since not only do i get the LED light (with some great customizations) but a real keyboard as well (I can text while driving without endangering anyone by looking at the screen). At the very least I'd like to see the iPhone on Verizon and a refreshed UI.

Same. This is all they have to add. I hate having to do the power button + swipe routine about 30 times a day.
