Official Metal Gear Solid 4 Gameplay Demonstration YES YES ALL OVER MY OCTOCAM

MGS3 included possibly the greatest character in the series, The Boss.

I hated The Boss with all my heart and soul. She was the dumbest character in the series. I felt more sympathy for Johnny Sasaki in MGS1 than The Boss. MGS3 marked the time when the series took a turn away from what I originally liked about the series. It turned from a stealth game with hilarious dialog and character back story with a slight arcade feel to a simple niche game, and I hated that. The addition of camo and stalking and the CQC system that didn't even work half the time just didn't do it for me.

MGS4 looks way better though. The camo system is completely streamlined and the CQC looks to be alot more solid and easier to perform instead of relying on pressure sensitive button presses (for some reason I slit every throat I held in that game, without pressing a thing).

Ah you sucked at MGS3 that's all.

Guys, I think one of the major problems is that they're using the Apple codecs to encode the video. These are very poor quality and what might be happening is they're also putting a video filter on the video before releasing it.

There's also some very apparent ghosting going on and I from the looks of things it's due to bad video processing. This was evident in the 1920x1080 E3 2007 Trailer that was released on the Japanese PSN as well.

I can't tell if that ghosting is an intentional effect in the engine or not but I don't like it. You can see this problem in a lot of GameTrailers' videos as well and it's possibly due to them using improper settings too. I remember seeing them in many of of the Lair videos that were shot by hand at Sony Gamer's Day and weren't direct feed.

Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about:

Ah yes of course, that's exactly it! You figured it out!

Genius! I'm an MGS fan my friend, but MGS3 wasn't as good as the other two, and I don't understand why people on GAF can get away with idiotic fanboy arrogance, as long as it's on the same side as the majority.

I've gotten high rankings on MGS3 every playthrough. I've run through the game on Very Hard without getting caught once, but I'm not talking about my skill at using camo. It was an annoyance to sift through menu after menu (all of which take a second or two to load, which is also stupid) to change from one camo to another.

What the hell happened to this game? It's like they took last year's phenomenal trailer and added all the awesome of the universe into it?! Absolutely stunning.

I know it's treading a fine line to say this without sparking Sony PR wars, but the sheer scope of animation, moves, interaction and tactics ... it's on par with the leap from 2D to 3D to my eyes. (And I say this as a tempered XBot). I have never seen a game look this good in all aspects.

I am completely and utterly sold on Ps3 now.

Oh, something else really cool I noticed - Snake's head follows the Metal Gear MKII. I thought that was a damn nice touch! You can see his head move/follow as the MKII is watching him through its camera and moving backwards.

Calm down there, buddy. It was only a joke :)
I really don't care what you thought of MGS3, to be honest.

I really enjoyed MGS3's setting, story and action setpieces...but the traditional MGS gameplay didn't fit in a jungle environment. The camo stuff was annoying, eating seemed stupid and treating wounds killed the intensity of many boss battles for me. The pressure sensitive CQC was so touchy that I just could not come to grips with them, I just settled on killing everyone from long distances. Also the controls were needlessly cumbersome in some instances, lets say you want to peek out of tall grass and shoot someone this is what you have to do...hold R1 for FPS aim, hold R2/L2 to peek out of the grass and press square to shoot. Who the **** on the design team thought that was intuitive?

Even though I have a laundry list of complaints with MGS3, MGS2 wasn't much better. MGS1 was great (at the time), it's probably aged terribly though. At least they've redone some of the controls (more context sensitive actions is a godsend, same with over the shoulder view, even the FPS view where you can move and shoot at the same time). Even then, I can still see some of the archaic MGS control is still in MGS4 just from the vid.

And don't worry about GAF groupthink, it's something a lot of us have to deal with.

That is a bit ridiculous.

I think it looks amazingly improved. It looks like the O button has different uses in different places, the little diagram pops up to tell you what the button will do, so it looks like CQC is going to be way easier. My only hope is that you don't have to hold 5,000 buttons to shoot in over-the-shoulder mode. My only issue with MGS controls is the constant holding of buttons. They should give you the option to change the function to toggle, jesus. I got annoyed by OoT's Z targeting until I figured out you could change it to Toggle.

EDIT: And I think MGS2 was better. I mean not by a giant lot, but it was better overall. The boss battles (oh how few they were, when will we get more bosses like in MGS1?!?) were intense, they all had backstories (all of them ****ing hilarious
Vamp ****ing Fortune's late daddy was :lol
) and the dialog and VA was perfect.

Ah, I didn't gather that from the earlier post. Still a bold statement, though.

Yeah, I got a little excited and worded it badly. :D

I think it just looks like theyve addressed every possible criticism of the MGS games and then some. I can see elements of design from Splinter Cell, Gears of War, even Half Life 2 in some regards. (As nebulous as that may sound - I'm not coherent enough to flesh out much more than that right now!). It's as if theyve increased the number of options available to the player in any situation by a remarkable amount. Perhaps even moreso than they did when Metal Gear transitioned from a 2D to a 3D series.

I'd argue that if you fixed everything that people criticize MGS for, you wouldn't be left with a Metal Gear game anymore. A heavy reliance on cutscenes, for example, is Metal Gear. Kojima isn't overhauling all the fundamentals, but he is enhancing and adapting (in some cases likely taking cues from other games). What I've seen so far I'd still classify as relatively incremental changes for the franchise, personally.

Touche.

I'm talking about things like the option to walk whilst crouching, or being able to lock on and circle a guard you have taken hostage. Those two things alone will end up making encounters a little more manageable without compensating for control shortcomings (in past games), and perhaps allow for more risky strategies to be tested?

The Fury had a great intro movie before you fought him. And the fact that you could beat him in about 30 seconds by poisoning him with the mushrooms/bugs was awesome

I think he was playing in easy mode, as not to screw up before an audiance. Not only did the guards not see there fallen camerades, snake was also able to stun enemies with a tranqualizer gun without shooting at their heads.

I was going to say this. I noticed the tranq shot to the side of the torso knocked him out instantly. The guard allerts seem to have been turned off as if he had the stealth camo and he was pretending to hide for the crowd. There were a few times when he approached a guard or shoot a guard that something would have got some attention. The second guard should have heard snake. If it was MGS3 he would have :( (currently going through on no alert still. Stealth camo preez). It was a demo of what you can do, not a watch snake die demo after all.

P.S. The Boss was the best death/sacrifice in a game. Screw Aerith, I got teared up at the end of MGS3 when the truth was told. Games aren't supposed to bring out emotions in me like this! Also sniper wolf was pretty sad.

I pulled the trigger with joy. Ha, Joy, The Boss, MGS humor.

WOW

That's all I can say.

Seems like it takes the BEST things from previous Metal Gears and the BEST things from previous Splinter Cells and mixes it into one game.

Pretty much an amazing presentation, this guy knew how to play the game and showed some awesome moments.

My second most wanted PS3 game, right behind Final Fantasy 13.

Probably mentioned in some of the 3000+ posts in this thread, but there is some strange aliasing going on with the shadows and I'm not one to notice graphical irregularities. Otherwise this looks as good as the trailer, I felt so much glee watching it. The part where he seamlessly got down on his back to shoot the enemies on the roof was cool, same with the grenade throwing.

I hope that the real game is much less forgiving with the stealth elements though. As someone mentioned earlier, it was likely on easy mode.

I can't believe I nearly went through this entire thread, up to page 63 now... will post this then go back to reading the last few pages.

Good stuff:

- AWESOME GAMEPLAY.
- Very smooth/fluid movement... One problem with previous games, especially MGS3 was controls.
- No menu headaches like Snake Eater, or at least not as much.
- No loading between areas and the menu pops up smoothly too.

Not so good stuff:

- Not as revolutionary as I thought it would be, though I don't know what exactly I was expecting.
- Graphics... I expected a huge jump. sigh.
- Realism... can still carry 500 items. Again I don't know how it would've worked otherwise but it's still awkward to just bring up one weapon after another out of nowhere.. Hopefully in MGS4 you don't go into a menu and heal your broken bones within seconds right in the middle of a boss battle.
- Camera... again I expected something revolutionary here. Like a smart camera or whatever... one system that works for all situations. Switched views and moving around the right analog stick feels like something that should have stayed in last gen.
- AI... yeah I know probably set to easy... but seriously the soldiers look like they're partially deaf/blind and have absolutely no skills whatsoever. There must be other ways to make the game easy for the player w/o making it look like something out of the PSX era.

Overall I'm excited for the game, but I'm not holding hopes that this will change gaming as we know it or whatever. I expected the same from Twilight Princess and not only did it not live up to the previous Zeldas, it turned out to be worse, heh. I don't think MGS4 will be anything less than a GOTY contender, but changing games the way are played, like kojima said with that OOO sytem or whatever...? No. What happened to that anyway, OOOO system? Kojima said they can't reveal it because everybody would rip them off.

:lol

jeez you really hated her didn't you?

She was just annoying to me. Her cutscenes were boring because Snake and her had some relationship and it was like watching some gay Cold War-era episode of Montel. I'd rather sit through 5 hours of Otacon talking about banging his mom and showing stock nuclear test footage then watch any of the FMVs in MGS3 that even contain The Boss, regardless of how many lines she speaks.

- Realism... can still carry 500 items. Again I don't know how it would've worked otherwise but it's still awkward to just bring up one weapon after another out of nowhere..

Shut up. Shut the **** up. Don't even encourage this sort of thought. ****ing Halo ruined action games by limiting the amount of carried weapons to a realistic amount. If I wanted realism in an action game, I'd go join the army. Carrying 500 weapons is fine. :D

And on another note, why are some of the shadows so low res? What exactly is going on there? Drop shadows from character models seem to show it the worst.

If you're talking about the shadows being cast from his hair/bandana onto his body then that's a common shadow glitch with many PS3 titles. Heavenly Sword had(still has?) this as well as some people saying it's in The Darkness too.

It's sort of a shimmering thing with the shadows.

It should be the exact same thing that Gamersyde has and it most likely is.

not shadows on characters, but also shadows on walls and ground. First PS3 game using global lighting?
