lets analyze that list
layers that are good:
Roy Williams(agreed)
Kevin Jones(i said consistant. he did good his rookie year, then put up the big squadoosh the next two years)
Dan Campbell (Overshadowed in Dallas cuz of Witten)(oh yeah. his 300 yard season makes him AWESOME)
Casey Fitzsimmons(71 yards FTW!)
Dominic Raiola (Probowl Center on any other team)(just cause he is the highest paid non pro-bowl center doesnt make him one on another team. but ill give you this one just for the sake of argument)
Corey Schlesinger(i refuse to call him a FB a good player unless he is putting up some kind of numbers or hitting the pro-bowl)
Mike Furrey (How many other NFL teams had 2 WRs with 100 catches each? And how many had Kitna throwing to them? )(Ill give you this one also, even if its going against my consistency rule)
Ernie Sims(Did ok, but lets see what he does next year)
Boss Bailey(always injured)
Cory Redding(overlooked him. good DT)
Shaun Rogers(Injured/Steroids hamper him)
Dre Bly(Good cover, but didnt play like he did when he was a ram
Daniel Bullocks(no)
Ok, so 5 good players on the lions outta 53.
:lol
You don't have a clue what you're talking about. I'm only gonna address the players we really disagree on. I have a feeling you haven't seen tape of any one of these guys or seen them on the field. That being the case, I'm also going off the assumption that you went to look up stats and based on that you're trying to gauge how good these guys are or will be. You can't do that.
-Daniel Bullocks- Solid safety that will prove his mettle in his sophomore season after having a year to grasp the Tampa 2 that Marinelli brought in.
-Dre Bly has played like he did when he was a Ram. Two years ago he was leading the NFC in picks til he got hurt. Last year he only had 3 picks in the Cover 2 scheme which he isn't suited for and that's obviously why the lions are letting him go.
-Shaun Rogers wasn't on steroids. He tested positive for Ephedrine. There's a world of difference between the two and if you don't know the dif then you shouldn't talk.
-Boss Bailey... yeah, always injured. :lol But still solid when he's not.
-Ernie Sims lead the team in tackles his rookie year. If it wasn't a sweet year for rookie LBs he would have stood out more.
-Schlesinger is sweet and won't be on the FA market long. Easily one of the top blocking backs in the league and has awesome hands out of the backfield.
-Kevin Jones is awesome each year until he gets hurt. This year he had Brian Westbrook type numbers until he broke his foot, and the year before was under a horrible offense. The proverbial "sophomore slump". If he's healthy he's a top 8 back in the league, top 5 under Martz offense.
Listen. They're the Lions, ok? They're not phenomenal at all. Not on any level (Other than MAYBE RB and WR). But in 2 years they'll be contending for a playoff spot again, provided Millen doesn't get fired (which would shitcan Marinelli, too, which would destroy the progress he's making.)
The type of progress you have to look for with the Lions isn't gonna be seen in the win-loss column right away. It's like a story my buddy tells me. He took a class at our college that was called "Advanced Football." It was taught by the head football coach, and he had just been hired from a successful program. One day they were watching tape and he tells my buddy, "People have no idea how bad this football team is." Then proceeded to show a kickoff where nobody even stayed in their lanes. The coach goes "These guys can't even stay in their lanes on kickoff. Their very basic skills- 3 point stance, catching, throwing, tackling-- is all wrong."
Well, that's like the Lions. Everyone dismisses them as plain ol' bad but you don't have a proper appreciation for how utterly bad they were under Mooch. Marinelli literally is trying to rebuild a football team. Progress is being made but it's gonna take another year before it really shows in the wins column, unfortunately. This isn't a team where the pieces were in place. The pieces were not and still aren't in place for anyone to take this team anywhere. But we've got a good core group of guys that we can build around, and eventually we'll get there. Those guys I listed are the guys that, more or less, we're going to try to build around.
Except Shaun Rogers and Dre Bly. Both have been told they can seek a trade :lol
