Official NFL Offseason Thread: Come back NFL! Come... back...

I'd personally like to see the Niners pick up Drew Bennett. Having ties to the Bay Area, it would be great for the Niners to bring him in. The Niners need a really good red zone threat like Bennett, and a sure handed receiver Smith could trust. Stallworth doesn't seem to have the greatest rep, especially in New Orleans, and I don't know if he's the kind of guy Nolan would want on the team.

Ideally the Niners off-season would look like this...bring in Adalius Thomas as a stud 3-4 LB, bring in Rodrick Hood as a cheaper, up and coming CB, who won't ask for Champ Bailey money, Drew Bennett for the offense, and hopefully Alan Branch falls to the Niners at 11 or they trade one of their mid-round picks to get him as the anchor of the 3-4 DL. Rest of the picks would be used to fill in holes in the defense and add some depth.

I'm really excited about the Niners off-season, and it's great to see Nolan turn the ship around after the ugly, ugly Donahue and Erickson years. Nolan has surrounded himself with a lot of really smart football people and it's good to see the Niners becoming a place players want to play again.

nameless did you see donte stallworth mentioned us? said he likes our team and would be interested. i'd love to have him on our team!

POST NUMBER 326 dude!!

I would take him but not at #1 WR money. He is a considerable upgrade from Battle, and good insurance in case Bryant loses it or fails another drug test, but I still think he is a #2 WR at best.

Donte Has been nothing but professional with the Eagles. Worked hard, practiced hard, said and did all the right things. He seemed to be a changed person, especially since the Eagles already said they wernt gonna have any bad character guys on the team anymore. Then they go out and get him, so...

"Welcome Brother"

I do think we need a WR, though. Its a small miracle that Battle lasted the entire season, and as I said Bryant could be gone at any moment. Unfortunately, Meachem's stock is soaring right now, and will likely soar even more, so my hopes of getting him in the 2nd round are officially dead. What we do with our first pick directly depends on what we do early on in FA. If we can score Thomas and a good DB, I wouldn't be adverse to WR if Branch slips. I really don't like Okoye that much if we're going to run the 3-4. Really what we need is a big old space eating beast at NT like Casey Hampton or Jamal Hampton. Branch, IMO has a suitable frame to be that type of player. He also has versatility and can play DE in 3-4 as well as convential DT in 4-3.

I was really looking forward to Meachem as the steal of the draft in the 2nd. He is a better pro prospect than Ginn, Jarrett, and Bow IMO. I suppose though with the number of picks we have it wouldn't be too difficult to trade up to grab a WR.

WTF? Another Niners fan? This is getting out of control!

The forces are gathering. The Niners are about to return to their rightful place as king of the NFL. Usually I would look down on a person who abandons their team, but I would look the other way if you came to the goodside, Tam. Think about the upgrade going from Leftwich and Garrard to Alexander Smith?

Unless the Niners find a way to move up and grab Calvin Johnson, I'd rather the Niners not pick up a WR in the first couple rounds. I think the safer bet is picking up a guy like Stallworth, or Bennett in FA and just focus on the defense in the draft. Drafting WRs seems to be such a hit or miss proposition, and unless you're getting a Larry Fitzgerald, or a Randy Moss in the first round, it's always so hard to gauge how good a WR will be in the pros. Of course what the Niners do in the draft will really depend on how free agency goes but I'd rather see them pick up a WR in free agency than in the draft.

I think for me, Adalius Thomas should be the Niners number one priority this off-season. After that, a decently priced CB and then a WR. It really matters how much the adjusted cap is going to inflate salaries even more this year, but the Niners aren't just one or two players away, they still need to fill a lot of holes. After listening to Scot McCloughan, the Niners VP of Player Personnel, on the SF radio today, I'm glad to hear the Niners still want to build through the draft and continue to stockpile talent. Even though the Niners are 37 mil under the cap, doesn't mean they should blow it all now. Taking an approach where they can always be 20-30 million under the cap will make them a contender every year, instead of just this one.
If you want to hear the interview, you can listen to it here. http://media.knbr.com/knbr/0215mccloughan.mp3

CalTopDog

greetings friend!

i am excited about the offseason and the direction we are headed in. i know there was a lot of questions about nolan when he was hired and even as recently as the middle of last year (even by myself!), but he has said all along to just be patient and things would turn around. it seems like they finally have.

i know there have been teams to turn it around from 2-14 in a year or two, but not like we did. you look at the saints. 2-14, ok. then they make the playoffs. a great accomplishment for sure, but come on. they had good players on both sides of the ball, brought in a probowl qb and an explosive rookie. i would challenge ANYONE on this board to find a roster from the past 10 years that was poorer than the one nolan inherited. tim rattay and ken dorsey as qb's? kevan barlow RB? brandon lloyd #1 receiver? ahmed plummer #1 cb? you take a look at the roster coming into 2005 and it is baffling. i can name TWO legitimately good players, and that is julian peterson and bryant young. honorable mention to eric johnson but he was hurt. to see nolan turn it around like this, and get rid of all that freaking garbage on our roster, is pretty impressive.

but now that we have weathered the storm we need to be careful. it doesn't take many mistakes to put you right back where you were. thats why building through the draft and key free agents is so key. i believe that is why teams like the redskins and cardinals have been consistent failures: poor drafting overall.

we'll see i guess. i'd love to score adalius thomas (now there are rumors the ravens are going to tag him), drew bennett/stallworth, dre bly/samuel/clements, and a d-lineman to help the pass rush this offseason. now that we have cap room and a good 3-4 coach on the defensive side of the ball we can finally get the correct personnel to run the 3-4. go niners!

The fact that we won 4 games with that team(and could've easily won 4-5 more) told me everything I need to know about Mike Nolan. Not only were we horrible to begin with, but we were decimated by injuries. 75% of our starting secondary, gone.. Starting TE who was also our best WR threat, gone. Newberry gone. JP, our best player was in his first year back from an injury that takes 2-2.5 to fully recover from.

Aside from that, we had a tough schedule, playing 11 playoff teams from that year, 12 if you consider the panthers were a playoff calibur team. Cody Picket, Ken Dorsey, and a 20 Year old Alex coming out of a gimmick offense at a mid-major as our QBs. We also had a very inexpreinced O-line. Not to mention starting WRs that would be slot Wrs at best on most NFL teams. In retrospect we probably should've gone 1-15, 2-14 again at best. I can't even hold that year against Smith. You put Peyton Manning right now in that same situation, and even he struggles considerably.

This is a very very deep draft. In fact, many first round talents are beginning to fall, and we need to take advantage. Nolan has had two great drafts with Brandon Williams being the only wasted pick IMo. This year I say go for Branch in the first if he is still there. If not BPA at a need position.. Be it Ginn/Meachum, Landry/Nelson, or Patrick Willis/Larwrence Timmons. Theres projected to be quite a few 1st round talents still there in the second. From Merriweather, to Buster Davis, to Marcus McCauley, to Craig David, there are a lot of guys I wouldn't mine having.

In addition, Nolan is not only a coach, but a man who brings decorum to the game by wearing (nay, forcing a sea change to push Reebok into making) suits.

When NFL coaches host their first ever conclave, the white smoke will flow from the chimney and football fans will rejoice as Nolan is decreed by their holy words the first ever Pope Coach.

The Cardinals will cease to be NFC West rivals and use their inherent religious rank to spread the gospel of Ted. Jesus-like, Alex Smith will part opposing defenses with precision passing and the aid of disciples Frank and Vernon. It is written, and it shall be so. The book of Ted 16:0 will transform the Bay Area with love, and San Franciscans' faith will be rewarded with a day of rest before the Niners ascend to the football promised land.

But seriously, I've got a soft spot for this generation's 49ers, but the San Fran love in is sort of making me sick :)

I like a couple Niners, but not enough to convert. :)

Adalius Thomas and Drew Bennett I can see going to San Fran.

Rod Hood will probably follow former Coach Spags to NY (Giants).

I'm not. :D

I hope he has a bad combine so he falls to us. ;)

The only way the Giants end up with him is if they trade up IMO. I can't imagine he falls below 14/15. Some mocks have him sitting around there (Yahoo does), but after the combine he should be there in all of them as he tests amazingly well -- really, the guy is off the charts.

I actually wouldn't mind the Bucs trading down a bit and getting him around 10/11.. I want us to go BIG on defense this draft. That is our biggest need. I hate to do it, but we need to cut Shelton Quarles and a bunch of older guys and start going young again. Get the defensive dynasty restarted.

The Giants need a playmaker on defense so bad. They should go with whatever LB or DB fits that bill when they're picking and fill the remaining holes on defense via free agency.

I've seen every snap Patrick Willis took in college, so I'm biased about him, but he has the best nose for the football I've ever seen. He's also fast and can shed blocks.

All this Niners/Giants talk is making me sick. Well, at least the Giants talk...I'm tired of the Seahawks so it would be nice to see new blood take the NFC West crown. The Giants are screwed without Barber and their shitty secondary. 6-10 or worse guaranteed. I could see the Niners winning the NFC West and perhaps even securing a bye, but I'd need to see their schedule before committing to that..

truthfully i have no beef with anyone in the NFC east except the cowboys. i don't really like donovan mcribb and feel jgar should be the man there but that's because i'm biased. with that said, i must reiterate the fact that eli manning isn't all he was cracked up to be. i have criticized alex smith for not taking chances in games, but eli manning is the exact opposite. he takes too many chances and makes too many foolish throws. you have to be consistent in this league and your teammates have to know what they're going to get out of you each week. you never can tell with eli.

as far as the redskins go i like them since they gave us 2 free draft picks for that bitch brandon lloyd.

thaaaaaanks!

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll start to thin out once the season starts and harsh, harsh, reality sets in

what is that reality? that we won't go 16-0? first off that hasn't been proven yet, secondly even if we go just 15-1 or 14-2 that is still pretty decent. enjoy your impending beatdown, NFC!

Aww, you forgot me. :(

Which reminds me, I'm missing a couple of my Niner Super Bowl DVD burns...someone managed to transfer VHS recordings of the telecasts of all of them, it's weird how empty the screen was back then - no ticker lines, not even a score or clock.

Who cares about bandwagon fans? Any SF fan that went through the debacle of the mid-to-late 70s should be able to easily weather the current situation (granted I wasn't around back then myself, but I don't ditch my support during hard times).

I think it's kinda scary how the last 2 years are mirroring the 79 and 80 seasons...but unlike the '81 team, I don't think this team's heading to the Super Bowl quite yet.

EDIT: Of course, I'd be ecstatic if I was wrong about that last part. :D

Actually Niner fans are always around, it's the Bengals fans that just randomly disappear as things turn south.

Me and iapetus are always around for the Jags though!

I hope the 9ers can take the NFC west from the seahawks next season, and dethrone matt hasselbeck and shaun alexander. they just need to get off to a hot start and they should be good, considering how well they finished last season.

e: and I'm a bengals fan, I'd just rather not feed the steeler trolls with stupidly bold predictions. I'll just let the team speak for itself next season. Besides, it's kind of dull to talk about the AFC North when it's going downhill.

Nice post, and nice username! I eat at Top Dog all the time in Berkeley whenever I'm in the area. :D

I bet Niners will be out of contention by December.

1. you are wrong
2. you are just mad that alex has turned out to be the new hotness, while eli has done nothing but cost your team games

we will win the NFC west and secure a first round bye. here are my pre-pre-season predictions:

NFC:
1. Bears 12-4
2. 49ers 11-5
3. Saints 10-6
4. Eagles 10-6
5. Panthers 9-7
6. Seachickens 8-8

AFC:
1. Colts 13-3
2. Chargers 12-4
3. Bills 10-6
4. Bengals 10-6
5. Ravens 9-7
6. Titans 9-7

Superbowl winner: 49ers over Bengals on a last second pass from alex to VD! chris collinworth kills himself. GO NINERS!!!

but unlike the '81 team, I don't think this team's heading to the Super Bowl quite yet.

neither did anyone in 1981! we had perhaps one of the luckiest drafts of all time. i respect bill walsh and think he is the greatest coach ever, but holy christ did he hit the jackpot on a few occassions with draft picks stepping in and becoming probowlers immediately. good scouting i guess, but you have to factor some luck into that.

When Alex takes a team to the playoffs ... no, when Alex takes his team to a .500 record this conversion continues.

oh that's right. alex smith came into the league with a 1500+ yard rusher, a probowl tight end, an established offensive line, one of the most dominant defensive lines in football, and decent WR's. oh wait, that was eli. alex came into the league with jack shit.

also, i will say this: when alex plays his first playoff game, he's not going to lose 20-0 and throw 3 picks or whatever eli did. that much i can guarantee.

Fixed your statement. You had a good rusher in Frank Gore and a superb TE btw, so don't cry for me San Francisco, the truth is you aren't the Lions.

Like I said, this conversation is over until we bet on the Jints-Niners game. Good day.

I wish I had something exciting to talk shit about with the bengals. Their offseason plans are about as boring as you can get, though. The only big move they made was franchising Justin Smith, and they said they aren't going after any big free agents. That's ok, though, because the afc north is going to be so weak next year, they shouldn't need any big moves to reclaim the division.

oh, and it's going to be fun with the matchup against the nfc west. I seriously only really worry about the rams/9ers games, and it just depends how the rams/bengals are on defense for that game.
