Official PSP Minis Thread

Are you guys based in Europe? If not, how are you getting EU games? Entropay or something?

I'm not based in Europe, but one of the writers live there. We all have a shared account for each region. That's how I got to play every launch title.

Forgot about this thread :-)
I just got my first mini, Tetris. It's really good, I love the menu and the overal look of the game. the remixed theme is just icing on the cake, love it!

I got the game from the EU store which its actually still up there.

We've got 3 codes for Vempire to give away and I'll post here with rules and what not.

Sweet, I'll be watchin' for the contest rules.

BTW, great idea for a Web Site: I'm so glad to see a site dedicated to reviewing the Minis. I'll definitely be passing your URL along to friends.

thanks a lot! I'm glad you like the site.

We posted our Top 5 Launch titles
http://www.pspminis.com/326/top-5-psp-minis-launch-titles/#more-326

It almost matches my top5:

1 - Tetris
2 - Fieldrunners
3 - Sudoku
4 - Vempire
5 - Pinball Fantasies

I love Tetris, thanks to the 12 game modes, the music and its "trophies". Sadly it doesn't have a georgeous visuals like Lumines, it's visually ugly like the other Tetris. And it's the first Tetris in a Sony platform :D

Where the hell is BreakQuest? :D Or are there only US titles included?

Just finished all 100 levels on easy. So much fun for such a little price. I love the minis. :)

I played it on the PC first and that could be why it was such a letdown for me.

Said it before, I'll say it again, blah blah....the ps store should have a MANDATORY video preview for all there games and minis, especially since there's no demo option. Fieldrunners has one, but why is every other company that makes psn games unable to do something like this?

My thinking exactly. I have no clue what I'm looking at half the time on PSN (and the screenshots are always buried, if they're even in there), a simple streaming video would make all the difference.

And it needs to be in a format that PSP can play. The portable is plenty capable of running video (FLV is not "officially" supported but if you've ever seen the homebrew app PSPTube then you know Sony has no excuses.)

Is there anyone who has played Brainpipe on PC that can comment on how well it compares on the PSP? I'm really itching to buy it, and at $5 it wouldn't be a big loss if I didn't dig it but I'd still like some opinions first.

I've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of the PSP version of Pinball Fantasies in the North American PlayStation Store for several weeks now. I hadn't heard any news lately, so I hopped over to Cowboy Rodeo's Web site and saw the following posted in the Shoutbox:

Updated, Fantasies will be out in US Store 24th and Dreams in the Europe/AUS store 19th! Thanks for all your support and waiting dudes

It looks like Tuesday the 24th is the big day (since Thursday is Thanksgiving). :D

But wait, it looks like Pinball Dreams is right around the corner for Europe and Australia as well! Hopefully that'll also make its way to North America soon.

Just played Puzzle Scape. Fucking awesome. Guys, buy this game. My "reviews":

Puzzle Scape 9/10
Tetris 8/10
Fieldrunners 8/10
Vempire 7/10
Pinball Fantasies 7/10
D-Cube Planet 6/10
BreakQuest 6/10 (great game but poorly ported, almost unplayable)
Brainpipe 6/10
Yummy Yummy Cooking Jam 5/10
Fortix 4/10
Hero of Sparta 4/10
Kahoots 2/10
Bubble Trubble 2/10
Bloons 2/10
Red Bull X-Fighters 2/10

Thanks for posting some reviews, yurinka. It looks like Europe is way ahead of North America in terms of getting Minis released on the PlayStation Store, as several of those (mostly the ones that you scored low) still aren't out here.

What didn't you like about Kahoots? I thought that was one of the better looking ones.

I got Echoes a few days ago. It's simple but fun, and also very affordable at only $2.99. It's a good "pick up and play" game that's suited to short play sessions when you have a few minutes to spare.

IGN reviewed Blast Off, gave it a pretty strong recommendation with "The best PSP Mini yet? Yup."

I think ESRB certification (and cost) is holding back US releases. Many of these games are trickling out, but well after the European release. That's disappointing (for Americans, at least, good on the UK for finally being first in line) but it seems like it's now starting to cycle with games coming a few weeks apart, if that pattern continues then I could be happy as long as everything good does eventually come over.

I tried to play Ratchet & Clank: Going Mobile on my phone today, the game itself (a 2D Ratchet) is pretty cool. However I can't see me playing it much, the D-pad on my phone is horrible, it's something I'd love to try out as a mini.

I bought it on a whim and am totally glad I did. It's extremely enjoyable.
Somehow I thought this game was like Orbital (GBA artstyle game). Is that even close?

Hey, yeah, huh? There was also a 2D cellphone game of God of War that I wouldn't mind seeing ported.

echoes is a really cool game, but the presentation just has me scratching my head. it's got like zero consistency. i keep playing it thinking that echoes 2 will have a lot more polish to such a nifty game idea.

and i really like fortrix, even if it's hard as balls.

I'd get it if they redo all the graphics and audio, refine the gameplay and rework the levels to support more enemies and actual puzzles. Essentially just remake the whole bloody thing. I would not pay for a straight port. It's fine as a mobile title but it's design is very affected by the system's limitations (the big kicker being the tiny file size of 600KB).

I just got this earlier tonight. It is a shockingly addictive game. As you can see from the screenshot, it's a reasonably good looking game as well, but the true beauty is the gameplay.

It's a very basic game design, with incredibly simple controls and a straightforward goal. You simply aim your rocketship, launch into space, and try to pick up astronauts and make it into the warpgate without running out of air or crashing into planets.

If you're familiar with the Worms games, then launching the ship is accomplished in a similar fashion to aiming many of the weapons in Worms, where you aim in the desired direction, and hold the button for a period of time to determine how much initial thrust you're going to use. Once you're in space, you can rotate the ship and apply thrust like you would in Space War or Asteroids. The planets have their own gravitational pull, which affect your trajectory. While this is often a hindrance, sometimes you can use it to your benefit by having the gravity bend your flight path into a desired direction without having to aim and thrust (using precious fuel).

When (and if) you succeed, your score is based on the number of astronauts you rescue, as well as the amount of fuel and air remaining. At this point, you will almost certainly want to try it again, to change things slightly, maybe conserve a bit of fuel or redirect your flight path, just for the sake of scoring a few more points. Soon, you'll feel compelled to retry 5 or 6 times because Halfbrick's ever-present default high score is teasing you, daring you to try to beat it. :D

Also, where is Pac-Man CE?

I'm wondering about this as well.

If you go to http://www.pspminis.com, there's a trailer on the front page now for a game called Cubixx, which is coming out in Europe this week. It resembles Qix, but played on the surface of a rotating cube. It's a very attractive looking game, and I hope that it plays as well as it looks!

There's also LocoRoco Hi!, and a Socom game for mobile phones. Darn it Sony!

Has anyone heard when Puzzle Scape will hit the US store? This looks like it could hold me over until Lumines.

So today I browsed ther minis section for the first time. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Pinball Fantasies. I spent countless hours back in the AMIGA era with this game!

The port is perfect with all the awesome music tracks (even the one in the logos screens) and the floppy disc selection is a nice touch. Maybe it's nostalgia , but I consider this to be the most fun to play pinball game.
Dreams is also there but Fanatasies is better imo.

Now someone bring Lotus 2 please so I can die a happy man.

Pinball Fantasies is an amazing game that has endured the test of time, more than a decade and a half after the original release. The conversion to PSP is outstanding, and they've even added a vertically-oriented mode which allows you to see a greater portion of the playfield with less scrolling.

Although it was originally a computer game (and later a console game), it is an ideal game to tote around for portable play. Now that the PS3 has been updated with the ability to play Minis, I look forward to playing it again soon on the big screen as well.

Yup, bought Blast Off last night.

Shit is way too fucking addictive. It's the only minis game I've downloaded, but fuck me it's fun.

I'm still waiting on Pac-ManChampionship Edition! I'm assuming it'll be the same as the iPhone version that was released today.

I also read somewhere that the developers of Minigore would like to port the game to the Minis program. But the program requirements (single player, no dlc, etc) are too stringent for their vision of Minigore (which includes DLC and soon local wireless co-op). I they find someway to get the game on PSP as I love playing it on my iPhone and it's be awesome to enjoy the game with proper controls.

It was rumored to be released as a Mini, but I can't find any new information on it since the initial rumors in September.

How the hell do you play the minis on a PS3? I click on my minis and it just prompts me to copy them to my PSP. I've updated to fw 3.15.

edit:
Apparently the games have to be "re-released" and I have to re-download them for PS3 use.

The PS blog says:
blog said:
The 3.15 update also enables “minis” to be played on a PS3 system. As we’ve reported here before, “minis” launched on PlayStation Network this fall in conjunction with the launch of PSPgo. These bite-sized games offer a more casual experience and are ideal for shorter gameplay sessions. Now PS3 owners will be able to play “minis,” and those who own both a PS3 and PSP system will be able to play on either platform. “minis” for the PS3 system will be available for download on PlayStation Store in the coming weeks. If you’ve purchased any “minis” already for your PSP and the title becomes available for PS3, you’ll simply need to download the title to your PS3.

Here's a question for anyone who has successully played Minis on both PSP and PS3 (chubigans, kassatsu, or anyone else): Have you tried transferring your game save data between the two systems? It would be great to be able to start playing on the PSP, then transfer the save data to the PS3 to continue my progress on the big screen, and later transfer the save data back to the PSP for portability. I know this type of transfer can be accomplished for PS1 classics, but I am hoping that this is also possible for Minis.

breakquest just got an update and is now ps3 compatible.

I downloaded this game and I didn't like it at all. The D-Pad moves the paddle too slowly and the analog moves it too fast. I suck ass at the game. :(

... also downloaded Sodouku. I'm very "meh" towards Soduku in general but wow the PSP mini version is awesome. I love all the features about it, especially being able to play whatever music is on your memory stick is awesome. It has a lot of great features. I'm not a big Soduku kind of person, but I freaking love the PSP Mini of it.

I might have to give it a shot. I loved Sudoku on Brain Age, and while that might be the pinnacle of video game sudoku, this sounds like a relatively good option.

This is so confusing!

I'm in the EU. Will I be able to play Tetris on my PS3 if I download it now???? I really want to play this Mini...

Didn't Sony say that the 17th would be the date when the minis would be PS3 compatible?

At any rate, I just bought Sudoku

I have no clue what Sony said! If I download (EU) Tetris now, I will only be able to play on the 17th, or what? fw 3.15 btw

From what I understand, the 17th would be the date (even though the firmware is currently available). At that time, some minis would work and for those that don't, you'd just need to re-download them.
