Official Rune Factory Frontier Thread

I haven't played the game yet, but is there some way to pan your view around? I ask because some pics of the game I see you are looking almost straight down (similar to the first two RF's) and views where you are almost eye level to Raguna. That view looks like it would be awkward and difficult to farm with as it is harder to see the rows.

Much easier with the top down view. Is there a way to switch back and forth?

OK, I fully aware this is going to generate more questions :) , but I hope this helps with both of your last two questions to me:

I got my forge last night (holiday peddler does not seem to have rotating stock unlike in RF, thankfully) and upgraded all my tools to the first level. (Next level requires some metals I haven't seen yet. Need to venture deeper into dungeons—of which I found two, by the way. One's
in Mist's front yard, underneath some grass that needs cutting
:lol) Forging itself is so much better than RF(2)'s "drag items onto forge, click OK, fail, do it again"; now you simply select a recipe from your list and it will show whether you have the requisite items. Hitting + takes you to the forging minigame, which is simply "press A when the bar is in the right zone". Blue zone = success, tiny green zones = extra success. I don't know if it's possible to fail based on level at this time.

So, now my hoe and can (and I assume my sickle) do 1×3, and my hammer and axe are stronger. "SP Attack", as it's called, has the same end-result as a charge from the DS games (water/hoe more area or do a stronger hit) but is actually triggered differently, by holding B and pressing A. It works great. I never really minded charge times (and they were improved in RF2, with visual indicators as to your level of charge, etc.) but I do like this better.

The only problem with this scheme is that I did end up accidentally pulling up a turnip in one cave that I was growing for runes... so now I have to replant that. Best to hold B (which is also your harvest button) while out of range of your crops, then approach.

The other neat thing is that if you're holding an upgraded hoe/can/sickle and walk into your field, the camera tilts and zooms out so you can see a bunch more. I'm rather impressed!

Oh, and I found a Wooly (sheep) and was trying to befriend it so I could store it in my new barn. Woolies hit fuckin hard, man. I almost died and had to escape with no Wooly. :lol

Ok, thanks for the detailed explanation. :)

As for what I bolded, so the camera doesn't tilt and zoom out unless your tools are upgraded?

Sorry for the late response, but since it seems you can't count lets have a lesson in the months: December (1), January (2), February (3), March (4). Congrats, that's FOUR MONTHS. I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. (Also, nice use of Pedant, I love that word :D)
wow ok you're right, suddenly i realised there are no other countries than japan and the united states of the youuuuu esssss aaayyyyyy

zigg said:
Correct. And it only does it for certain tools.

That doesn't sound very promising. :(

I can see how that will be awkward if you have rows and rows of crops but it is hard to get a good idea on your field layout as you are zoomed in at eye level with Raguna.

I guess I am just going to need to play the game tonight before I make any kind of judgement. I just didn't want to start yet because afraid I will be sucked in and I try to play only one console game at a time (right now, it's Persona 3 FES). Besides, I want to finish RF 1, first, as well.

But I guess I'll just have to try it tonight to get a good idea how it works.

IGN finally got around to reviewing it, added to the OP. I'm glad Bozon did the review and he has a lot of praise for Frontier.

It's driving me nuts waiting for this game. Keep the impressions coming guys.

I'm totally going after Mist!

I've put about three hours into it and am loving every second. I didn't really play the first 2 RF games that much, so a lot of the core stuff feels like such a huge improvement over Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility. For example: item sorting, decent voice acting, characterization, etc. It's all simply beautiful to me.

I ended up buying that DJ eGuide. Unfortunately it doesn't explain some simple stuff like getting a cheap hammer, etc.. Lots of other super useful stuff though, worth the $10, IMO. DJ even called me because there ws an e-mail error on my order, great service.

But without spoiling anything, there's a shitload of content here to go through in this game. I'll easily cross the 100 hour mark.

I'm still almost floored by the presentation. I really like the art style and graphics. Nice effects like the Runeys (it's a while before you get the harvester) and seeing the mail girl haul ass with the cloud of dust behind her. I think Innocent Life (PSP) is still my favourite visually, but RFF is a very close second.

Gonna go back for another 3-4 hour session now, will have more detailed gameplay impressions to follow. If anyone has non-spoiler stuff to ask like item locations, crop values, etc. feel free to post them in here.

So I've nevvvvvvvver played any Rune Factory games, they've interested me, but I never got around to trying one out.

Is this one a good start for a newbie?

I heard you can't knock on doors with the CC. Anyone have any info on that? I haven't gotten my copy yet.

I haven't figured out how to do it, nope :/

I've never really played them either. Started RF2, but felt a bit overwhelmed, even as a long-time Harvest Moon fan. I've had zero problem sinking into RFF.

Friendly advice: just try it, and try not to obsess anymore over words. :) Targeting the tools is my only gripe, and it's much less of a problem now as I've sort of learned to work with it. The rest works just fine.

bryehn said:

Got it at lunchtime, actually... stuck at home with a sick kid today... :) Haven't really used it yet though other than the suck up a few random Runeys. The manual talks a little bit about them but I'm not really sure what to do with them yet.

Scrubking said:

Correct. I'm not sure if that's a big deal, though, because I've not got enough FP to actually knock on anyone's door yet... just get a message.

Oh, I know. That's why I added at the end I'll just have to give the game a try before I make any prejudgements. I just was trying to stave off from playing it because I am afraid it will suck me in. :lol And I try to play one console game at a time, besides the fact trying to finish RF 1, first.

That's good to hear that targetting has been less of an issue for you.

Anyone mucking about with the Runeys? I think they are going to drive me insane. :lol

Mostly, I wish I understood what the "Prosperity" that the book talks about is. My map has been entirely green; is that "Prosperity"? I also got this, from Hashimoto in my own Q&A, that muddies up the waters a bit:

Yes, you can think of the Runeys as spirits of the world of Rune Factory, where they are involved in a sort of food chain. If you want a certain Runey to flourish, you’ll have to eliminate another type of Runey that eats those Runeys, or you can even let them be eaten on purpose to change the environment to your liking.

You can manipulate the Runeys to adjust the environment to allow you to grow crops faster.

I don't have the faintest clue what sorts of "adjustments" I can make... other than this "Prosperity" bit...

Scrubking said:

I looked in the manual and I don't see any controls for the CC to knock on doors. Which is a bit odd.

There is a purpose for the door knocking, the manual said something about it. But I can't remember what it said.

I just got the game last night so I'm only on day 2, but I'm enjoying it so far. I was trying to hold out until I beat RF2 (I'm waiting for my first character to have a kid so I can build the school to start the actual game ;)) but my husband convinced me to give in early.

zigg said:

I'm just guessing, but maybe this refers to the Runey Miracles you can get? The manual mentions something about those, but other than that and triggering "prosperity" I'm not sure what you'd use them for. I'm guessing they don't have any effect on their own? It'd be nice if you released water runeys around your crops and they watered them for you, for instance.

If you were holding out for story issues to finish RF2 before starting RFF, then don't worry.

RF2's story is not related to RFF in any way. Although RFF does follow the original RF, also has a lot of the same characters. Although it's not necessary to play the first RF to play RFF.

Again, that is only if you were holding off for story. I'm just saying you don't 'have' to finish RF2 for plot reasons. If it's for your own reasons, well, that's different. :)

So, uh...I've been playing for like 6 hours now and I still don't have a Cheap Hammer. Guide mentions nothing. Can anyone help?

wow, finally something that makes me wanna play my wii again.

i love the HM series, and never got around to playing the DS RF games. This is so mine.

Speaking of which, I saw Okami earlier today and I heard good things from that too. Worth the 30 bucks?

Rune Wonders are cashing in Runeys you have in your inventory for some specific thing, be it a Rune Stone or some sort of other Wonder like the rainy week (which I did do, by the way.)

Releasing Runeys is how you tweak the balance of Runeys in any given area. When you get access to it, you'll be able to check how many of each type of Runey is in each area of the town map, then adjust them by harvesting (which is rather indiscriminate) and releasing in the appropriate areas. You need to make sure the food chain is satisfied (water eats rock eats tree eats grass) to keep them from killing each other off. Other than that, I'm not really clear what the effects are, but I gather Prosperity—however it is achieved—means faster-growing crops.

Head to
the second screen of Whale Island's cave
.
Melody
should be there, and will give it to you
so that you can break a rock to open a hot spring
. IIRC.

I have a question about forging:

So, I bought the forge from the holiday salesman. I made a new axe and a new hammer. The new axe still can't chop stumps, so what is better about it? New hammer can smash smaller stones, so I see the upgrade there.

However, to upgrade my can, I need an old can and two components. I think it's iron and iron ore or something... both of which I have. Unfortunately, the second component slot is grayed out, and I can't make the can even though I have what I need to make it. How do I make the new can?

I think you have to upgrade the forge.

It can actually chop stumps, but you to hit them six times with charged chops. Burns up a bit of RP, but it's a great way to skill up at chopping, so you'll use less RP in the future.

(Don't bother wasting RP trying to smash the big rocks with that first hammer upgrade, by the way. I don't believe it can be done.)

I think you're looking at Cheap Can + Scrap Iron + Scrap Iron? Tin Can should also be in there as Cheap Can + Iron. The "Handy Forge" that you bought (still have it myself) can only handle two forging ingredients. To forge more complex things, I believe you need to get Kross to expand your house to support a bigger forge. (This is new to RF:F, by the way; a forge is a forge is a forge in the past two games.)

So, how does this compare to RF2? I imagine it at least features many of the improvements made in RF2 over RF1, yes? Or is it something of a different beast entirely?

Ah I see. Man I can't wait to get home and make my new can!

What happens if you fail? Your cheap can doesn't go away does it? I haven't seen anywhere to buy new cans... although I did get a letter about a new general store opening in town right before I turned it off last night.

Mejilan said:

I'd say it's different. The Rune Factory core is still there, but there's just a myriad little changes. For example:

  • There's no job board (which I loved from RF2 for driving so much character interaction), but there are letters asking for replies and for items and persistent in-person requests from characters for things. The letters in particular are really convenient, though there's less "event" to them, too.

  • Forging's different, as we've talked about in this thread; in addition to the different levels of forges you've got the "press the button when the bar is in the right place" system that can win you a more competently forged item, which comes out at a higher level.

  • Charging tools (and I assume weapons) isn't a hold-and-wait deal anymore, you hold B to shift to "special attack" mode instead. Very efficient, especially when there's a ton of watering to do...

  • Runeys. :D (You don't get runes in your main field, anymore, by the way. Runeys in town, runes in dungeons.)
Beyond numerable changes, though, the whole thing ends up feeling a little different too. It's not the feeling you get when someone takes a successful game someone else wrote and tries to bring it to another platform, but—and as Neverland did this one too, this is probably exactly what happened—more like a company said, "okay, we have to redo most of this for the new platform, what should we keep and what should we do differently?"

FlyinJ said:

Nope, you can't buy the tools nor lose them via forging. The forge never eats failed materials; cooking does (so says the manual, and that's par for the course with the past.)

That sounds awesome. The question is, are levels actually significant in this game? In the original RF levels on weapons barley did anything and I would have to push a weapon up to 99 to notice anything.

This sounds so awesome. I would have had it already but it seems the only stores carring it around here are Gamestops; and of the 6 stores I called, all but one had only the gutteted copy.

I wonder if this will become a rare, hard to find game~

Man, I really want to pick up my copy, but still haven't had the chance. Picked up the ebook from DJ just now though. God, I wish I could have a physical book instead.

And wow, while flipping thru it. You really can see how much effort was put into this. Like things change in the opening depending on events you've done :O
\
In particular, a slimmer Eunice

My god, there's so many likeable girls this time. I really don't know who I want to go with, but Eunice does seem like a really fun one to go after since she dramatically changes.

I managed to get all of my basic tools to the next one (Iron, Tin, etc) to Lv. 2 easily by getting the green bar, while saving before I forge of course. :P

If anyone's still looking for that damn sickle, talk to Eirk when he's in the bath house, I forget what day it was, but it was late spring. I know I've been dying to get it to clear out Mist's weeds.

I'm in a pickle:

Right now it's the 6th in the Summer, and I found out I can indeed expand my house to allow better stuff like better forgers.

I have the 20,000 gold necessary to buy one of the forgers from Kross, problem is I'm short on the 240 lumber that's also necessary.

I can get enough, the problem is I'm in need of RP restoring items to hack enough twigs to get said lumber.

But tomorrow is a holiday, which is when Lute starts selling the actual new items. But Kross is busy that day (I resetted back to the 6th).

So I can't just get the lumber on the 7th, or else I'll have to wait quite a bit before the next holiday happens.

Aside from the food at the Inn at night, are there any places where I can find RP restoring items during the day? I have it saved at 11:00AM on the 6th.

One more thing.

I remember getting a letter from Rosetta when she opened her shop, but I had to reset to get something after that so it reverted me back before that, no harm done.

But I missed the mail, and the letter doesn't appear on my table in my letter list!

Is it normal for Rosetta's shop letters to not be saved? I also latter got (and saved the game since) a letter from her advertising something about the summer. Didn't appear in my letters list either!

I guess it's only personal letters that get saved?

By the way, I'd like to share the animals I got!

In order of when caught:

Warm the Woolie.
Momo the Buffamoo.
Silver the Silver Wolf.
Rocky the Chitter.
Doodle the Cluckle (I think it's called that)

Funny thing is, I didn't even know Silver was called a Silver Wolf before naming it! :lol

I named Silver after Silverbolt from Beast Wars, and Rocky... well you can guess that. :P

The others were recommended so I kept them. :)

I use Silver the most, DAMN that thing can move fast!

Also, I'm having Rocky gather veggies, but how long does it take? It's been days already! :/

Finally, I had some silly (bad) luck. On the last day of Spring, I planted so many Turnip seeds, well you can guess what happened on the following day. X_X

At least my farming skill when up quite a bit from all the dead grass I sliced off.

It happened again when I tried again when I planted more, only to remember after it was too late that they're only growable in the spring, rinse and repeat. X_X

One tiny giggle I had:

I was about to collapse at the Whale Island Fin, and when I though the coast was clear, BANG, a Buffamoo rammed me and I collapsed! I couldn't help but think of that recent commercial with the guy who spits out his gum and gets hit by a Ram! :lol :lol :lol

I bought it! It better not suck!

:p

My GameStop didn't get any copies until today. And they only got one. So I cleaned out their inventory!

I'll be buying this at some point just not sure when.. i already have a ton of games i havben't finished yet.. but this is at the top of my list for sure

Got my copy today too! On day three so far. Trampoli's quite a pleasant place, but rather empty in terms of villagers compared to RF1/2. I imagine they move in later. On side note, while reading the DJ guide now, they mentioned something of interest I'm a bit curious about.

They suggested that you play RFF with a relaxed pace. Just relax they say. Don't cram everything in as if there was a stopwatch timing you. Now that's different for me, in that all my years of playing harvest moon, It's always been a ton of time management to get crops all finished before 5PM, while making the rounds everywhere to talk and please the villagers. Which IMO was making the most of every single day that passed. The approach and mentality they suggested was that even if you missed something, next year is always there so there's no real rush to do things. So I ask Rune and Harvest Moon veterans alike: What do you think of this approach? Do you do it yourself or how do you usually handle your schedule?

I take it easy. I like the pastoral approach, a nice even pace, do some cooking, do some farming, bash some monsters. One of the aspects of this game I appreciate the most is there are tons of things to do and none of them is the right one. I can spend my time as I please.

If I start to feel a little panicky, like I'm spread too thin, then I ease off. At one point I had crops at my homestead, crops in Whale Island, and crops in the Green Ruins. It felt like too much at that point so I let the Whale Island crops wither and scaled back on my activities. I'll get back to it later when I have more pets harvesting and doing chores for me. Right now my focus is getting up my cooking and fishing and saving for an expanded forge.

There's no right way to play it, just have fun :)

You might not be that far yet.
Buy books from Selphy after she moves into the Rune Archives
, IIRC. That said, I need better metals myself before I can do that. I actually spent some times thinking I couldn't progress in Green Ruins, but last night I just discovered a path on a wall I never walked by :lol Better metals should be in the next dungeon, I imagine.

Yeah I can make the even better tools, but I need Silver. I'm positive I've searched every part of the Green Dungeon I'm currently able to. Where is this wall? What floor?

There's a rectangular room fairly deep in with a squirrel, a handful of ants, and several plots... the path was in the lower-right hand corner, IIRC.

It eventually leads to the other side of the first door Raguna says is locked.

I'm on day 13 or so of this game, got it yesterday and I'm loving it. I hadn't played a Rune Factory before, but I've played most of the Harvest moon games. This is a great extension of that gameplay. The art music and interface works really well. I hope this does well for Marvelous at retail. :p

I completely forgot that this game was coming out so soon!! I loved the first 2 rune factorys on the ds, and this looks like it has alot of the same characters from the first ds game, is it a retelling of the ds game? or is it a new adventure? Doesn't matter, I'll pick it up soon. I just bought Madworld the other day, and fell in love with my Wii all over again.:D This really has been a great year so far for the Wii. The next game I can't wait for is Little King's Story.

I'm sure I already explored this hall you're talking about, but I did find something new thanks to your mentioning of doors:

The Giant Chicken boss room!

Good thing I had all of those Energy Drinks, it was close but I killed it.

Don't know what's next though. I guess I'll find out in a few days perhaps.

It seems like its sequel that takes place after rf1. Based off the reactions from the characters that were from rf1. They seem like the very same chars.

Neat. I guess the type of person I am won't let me normally play at such a pace. I priortize efficency if anything. This is interesting to know that people really play this style too. Well. Anyone else? Cmon neogaf harvest mooners. Give me your input!

Man, a week in now. And yikes triple post! But no one else is giving it love. Rune Factory definitely needed the leap to Wii. It really benefited being on an actual console instead of a handheld. The presentation is just outstanding. The animations, the details! The dungeons are huge and varied too. In comparison, the DS ones if i I recall weren't too fancy. Well to be blunt, I recall'em being pretty flat. There's actually a great sense of scale here. I'm really liking how all the character interactions been handled thus far too. Maybe too early to say it, but it might be one of the best HMs (spinoff or not) I've played in a long time. Surpassing that of even Magical Melody.

I wish to fiercely challenge this insulting accusation. Have a written retraction signed in your own blood on my desk by 5 or you're fired.

I've started over in RF2 to help me quench this thirst while I wait for the european release. So good.

I just hit Summer in my game and am about to expand my forge :)

@kiryogi

The DS versions were a little flat, being isometric, but I always thought they were gorgeous. Easily some of the best looking games on the system.
