Official Virtua Fighter 5 Battle Arena Version C Thread

Been playing Vanessa in Questmode for some time now and I'm a pretty big fan of customizing your character. It's no different in VF5.

Problem is, at the start of the Questmode I was getting a lot of items from fighting, be it orbs or just clothing. Now I hardly get anything at all. Yet the queststatus says I got 35% items left and judging by the Youtube videos, I'm missing some pretty cool stuff (machinegun on the back, blue hair etc).

Thing is: are there set opponents who give you an item in the questmode or is it all random?

Dunno, but if you just want to get a bunch of items quickly, try the balloon. Get your losses up to a number ending in 7 (7, 17,27, etc.), then your wins up to something ending in 6, then exit and save. Go back into an arcade, win one match so your wins, too, now end in 7, then exit the arcade. Give it a few seconds and, hopefully, a SEGA ballon will come floating in from the upper right of the screen. If it doesn't, exit back to the dashboard, start the game again and get get another win to make 7, repeating until it shows up (and it should show up frequently, say 50% of the time).

If it does, wait for the balloon to float over an arcade you want to play in, and enter when it does. You will have 10 item matches in a row. If you want to do the trick again, just win 9 fights in a row, then exit out, save, and get that last win to make 7, checking for the balloon again, as before.

Hey Guys - need some halp. I just hooked up the 360 to a 1080P Bravia via the stock HD component cables and find the online play quite sluggish / laggy. Offline seems ok, as i am able to connect combos, but playing online is noticeably a problem. This is occurring even against opponents with whom i have an excellent connection usually (when playing on my standard def TV).

The 360 is outputting 720p and the display info on the TV screen confirms this. Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Uh...if offline is fine, then it's not a problem with the TV.

Sounds to me like your internet connection is the issue.

i got the ps3 version, but I will be borrowing my brother's 360 to play this online.

Can you subscribe to xbox live directly from your xbox? or do you have to buy a prepaid card?

Is it easy to find players at all times?

yes, with a credit card.

But try out creating a new tag first if you're just borrowing it. There are free months for a certain number of tags...

This video truly shows why VF5 is a brilliant 3D fighting game.

Great fight indeed. I always thought that fights based on defense and counter-attacks were better than those based on offense and long combos. Of course with such a strategy I was having a hard time online at first, because many human players were so agressive (and I was more disturbed by people repeating always the same attack than by those with a more complex gameplay). But I'm getting better now.

I think I will choose Eileen as my main character. Lau is still fun but I'm in the mood for a faster character right now.

Im warming up for the rest of tonight.

My guy is Lei-Fei, been doing well with the normal moves but I really need to work on the throws & counters for when someone is laying in on me on the ground but most of all the different stances, if I end up in one I just press G to jump back to normal.

Anyone help me in working out on for each one?

Also my friends list is also far too light on VF players, add me for a rumble.

Doesn't NAT only affect whom you can join or hear? Didn't experience any lag issues myself when my NAT was Moderate.

You can, albeit with a credit card. But it's better to buy one of those pre-paid cards instead.

Is there any way to get the Japanese announcer? I already miss -- WWWHOOOOOAAAAUUUGGGH! GIIIAAAANTTTTA SWIIIIINNNGGGGUUUUUUUU!!!!!

Hearing some white bread guy go "Giant Swing" like he's announcing a Golf match just kills it :(

I've hit the DOJO straight away, using Brad.

Some of the combinations are very difficult to time, I'm currently stuck on:

Gazelle Upper

From Ducking : P + K success, then P

Maybe 3 out of 10 attempts I can parry the punch, but I can't follow it up.

Can I assume the Hori stick would make it easier?

Yea, set your language to Japanese in the dashboard (first of the moon alphabet options).

do you have the command input displayed, press the start button and make sure the input is displayed.

you can do ducking moves from crouch dash. I find forward crouch dash is easier than just holding down for crouch.

try forward crouch dash, p+k, then p. make sure to input as fast as you can

Are there any sites that have tutorials and a move lists, preferably in color and divided by character? I bought the strategy guide, but returned it later because it would be too difficult to look at the book trying to do combos and moves. At least with a computer, it'll be next to me and lit up. Also, I tried Jacky yesterday but wasn't really liking his move set. I did enjoy playing as Brad and like the fighting style much better. Im going to stick with him and see how things go.

virtuafighter dot com

you can find move lists and combos for each character.

once you know the moves for a character, you can watch some VF5 vids on youtube and you
can identify the combos used.

I've been playing some more matches online, I'm surprised I'm at 12 wins and 8 losses. I guess it's partly because people aren't used to playing against Lion, because I'm really not a great player. Most matches were very close wins.

At first I liked the online system (play against people evenly or higher ranked than you to level up), but I guess some people don't follow that system. When I created some games as a 7th kyu, I still got 2 3rd dan people joining my game, and beating me in 5 seconds. Why? Just so they can have a cheap win? There really should be a way to get out of the match once you see your opponent has a much higher rank.

Also, I've now been playing against some US players (Belgium here), and there was NO LAG at all. Sega/AM2/MS/whoever did the net code deserves some more credit for this.

for some reason I have a hell of a time against Lion when useing tall players(wolf, jeffery)
he is so damn short and fast it can be tricky

I played some matches online tonight and the netcode is extremely impressive. It's probably the most consistently playable fighter I've seen outside of Alpha 2 on GGPO.

Waaaay too many scrubby Pai players though. Well, mashers in general. It's just sort of ... sad.

I don't think a lot of people know how the ranking system in Virtua Fighter works, hence they think it works like in Tekken where even people who are higher ranked can get some experience, but that would be wrong.

10th kyu - 1kyu: Experience gained every match, no matter if it's a win or loss.

1st dan - 10th dan: You only gain a small bit of experience playing someone outside of your rank who is also within 2 ranks of your rank. To level up quickly you need to beat same ranked opponents 3 times in a row. Losing one match resets the count. So if you are 4th dan and fight a 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th dan, you gain experience and after 20 or so matches won (provided you don't lose) you can level up. However if you fight three 4th dan players and win all 3 games, you go up.

10th Dan to Kaiden:
This one is tough and IIRC one of the main reasons soooooo many people in Japan stopped playing VF5 seriously. Once you are 10th Dan, the only way you can level up is to fight a Kaiden (I forget the US ver. name... maybe Master?) and win. If the Kaiden loses he goes down to 10th Dan and you go up to Kaiden. However, for a Kaiden to go up to the next level, they have to beat FIVE 10th Dan fighters in a row. Losing one match to a 10th dan drops them to that rank and then they have to find another Kaiden to get back up to that rank.

and holly shit and the compition level online now..
I took a day off and everyone is 200wins already:lol

Gosh.

Ok, here's a question for everyone:

What is the general feedback for VF5 so far in your area? Do you know if anyone else has purchased this game or do you feel you're the only kid on the block that is interested in the title until you come onto this thread, fight online or go play it in the arcades? Is this title selling in your local stores?

Let me know what your perception of how successful/unsuccessful this title is so far. Let the truth be told.

I'm finding the DOJO very hard using the controller, both the analogue stick and d-pad are very flaky even when trying to just do a simple < >...

I guess I need the stick?

Fighters aren't popular to begin with in Belgium, so I doubt many have bought Virtua Fighter 5.

I have a question. I picked up the 360 version for $30 at CC and played through the arcade mode. Game is fine (though Jacky feels really different) and I haven't tried online yet.

Q: When I put the disc in and it loaded, it began the opening cinematic. There were some odd "pauses" at the start of the cinematic, usually during this "explosion" effect. I could not tell if these were intentional or some kind of disc read problem. The rest of the intro, including all the character parts, was smooth as silk, and the game played fine.

Are these "pauses" during the opening normal or should I look at swapping discs at the store? I didn't notice any scratches on the disc.

Try clearing your Xbox 360's cache. I believe, to do that, you must press and hold "A" while the Xbox 360 is initially booting up.

Well, playing as Lion against the big characters works two ways:
pro: it seems easier to do some low hits/quick combos, and blocking their attacks and countering with a throw is also easier
con: some of the juggles don't work against Wolf or Jeffrey (G+K, K, K is only one hit, the other kicks never follow up unless it's against a wall)

Kyu/Dan/Kaiden stuff

Reno, thanks for writing all that down. I know it doesn't really get mentioned in the game, but I assumed anyone who played the quest mode would eventually understand the system. Guess I was wrong.
And yeah, Kaiden is Master in the english version.

Tekken is easily the most popular fighter, but only because Tekken = Playstation. Other fighting games get ignored completely. My circle of friends enjoy playing Soulcalibur, but I think we're an exception.

And hey, if MicVlaD bought VF5, there are already 3 Belgian GAFfers who have the game!

no, I always thought if I were 2nd Dan and I played a 10th dan and won I would get a chance to rank up.

That has changed in the Home version for 360. I was 10th Dan and leveled like normal until I reached Kaiden (Master) By that I mean that I didn't even SEE anybody beyond 10th Dan until I became Master.

What hasn't changed though, is how you gain experience as Master, its exactly what you described.

thats pretty f'n awesome.

EDIT... trojan X, is Brads style really Muay thai, he doesn't seem to use his elbows and knees alot. Then again I don't know much about the style and his stance does seem to resemble it.

I've been doing Muay Thai over the last two years, the move set is very similar to what I have learned.

Elbows are not used that often unless the two fighters are very close together, and knees are most effective when in the clinch (unless it's a running knee).

The only issue I have with his stance is that you can't switch to long guard, which offers much more counter attack potential.

Yeah, you promote from 10th Dan to Master by just getting enough experience. If you lose against a 10th Dan, you degrade to 10th Dan again. If you win 5 matches against a 10th Dan, you become a Defender/Hunter/Warrior.
This is in Quest mode though, I don't know if it's the same online.

Don't know really, since I'm not into Tekken. I guess it was very popular back in the PSX-days, but not anymore. Casuals will probably still like Tekken however because of its flashy appearance. Soul Calibur and Smash Brothers too for that matter. I could also say the same for Dead or Alive, which was a reasonable success on the Xbox and the 360 thanks to its thorough online implementation, and which is probably mainly why a moderate number of people over here also played Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting and Ultimate Mortal Kombat III on XBLA. Everything else isn't that popular in Belgium, unless you're a "hardcore" beat 'em up fan.

Might I add that there's little to no competition here, and beat 'em ups are mostly viewed as a fun way to kill time. There are tournaments at some relatively small conventions, but almost every single time there are very few participants that actually know what they're doing (i.e. most people just bash buttons with the coolest looking / most popular / fastest character and hope for the best). The Netherlands on the other hand (our neighbours) are significantly better when it comes to competitive gaming.

Thanks, I'm at 5th dan now, and I was wondering why I stopped leveling up so fast. Considering how easy Quest mode is on normal difficulty, beating five 10th Dan fighters in a row shouldn't be a problem. I believe the English ranking names are in the achievement descriptions. (You're right about that rank being Master, BTW...)

I battled against 3 other Japanese girls while I was in Japan. Even though I beaten them those girls kick could still kick serious ass! I've seen one girl ranked up over 20 wins against several guys and those guys were pretty good too!! Popular characters with the girls are Vanessa, Lau and Sarah.
