The "society" is anti video game.
The Chinese youngsters LOVE video games.
Big difference.
youngsters need their parents' money to buy games and their parents won't. Besides, most youngsters favourite game has nothing to do with console.

So... this is good?
Is this good?
I think that's a decent start. Not like there has been a huge ad campaign over there, this is something that will need to start small and be fostered. Very interesting market over there.
why does everyone think its the whole of china that the consoles are launching in??
since it was announced that only the Shanghai free trade zone has been opened up IIRC not the whole country?
The console has pretty much been available there for ages, has it not?
Why couldn't this be the beginning of CRPG or something like that?
I read somewhere around here that the Chinese government had to approve a set amount of XB1's to be sold there. Given these circumstances I'd say this is pretty "ok" news. 16k for one retailer not including the eventual walkins means that they might possibly sell out of their initial shipment.

The import quota is currently 500K units, and no one believes they'll sell or ship 500K ininitial shipment.
There's always a small minority of gamers that aren't bound by the traditional 'cliche' of a Chinese gamer.
Sure, 90+% of gamers in China play on PC/mobile, and don't give a shit about games not named Cross Fire, DNF, DOTA2, LoL, WoW, etc, but surely there's more than several hundred thousand of 'console' gamers.
Another China thread.
Another bunch of things to answer.
So if they don't ship 500K (I was expecting 100K tbh) then isn't it conceivable that they might sell out of that initial shipment?

Who knows. There's really nothing we can compare with.
So realistically we'll have to see how Sony sells later this year/early next to see if it's good.
However, to give the numbers some context, the following is the estimated pre-order total for some major retailers as of 08/13/2014:
Sunning is the 5th retailer down the list.
So as 08/13, the kinect version sat at 10741 units and the non-kinect version at 1991.
Accounting for the current changes of 12,800 preorders on the kinect version and 2,800 on the non-kinect..
That's an increase of 2059/809 units for the past 20 days.
Note: the chart above does not include online orders directly with MS or subsidized models through cable deals.
Good, bad? who knows.
I would say they've been having decent ad campaigns.
More than the Europe effort, so it seems.
It's the whole country.
You can just go to any b2c site and see where they can ship to (everywhere.)
It's just that the Shanghai FTZ is the only area where SONY/MS are allowed to import/assemble/package atm. That and they're pretty much forced to partner with subs of Shanghai media group (government owned.)
Since launch and at one time below US MSRP prices.
Prices for grey market consoles actually went up recently due to the region-locking news for official consoles driving up some demand.
There are CRPGs, just like there are KRPGs, VietRPGs, etc.
Trust me, most of them are of poor quality.
That and western publishers has been smart enough to buy up good Chinese talents anyway.

Can I ask how you know the initial shipment is 500k? Very curious!
The Import Quota?

sorry, typed 500K instead of 5M.
Ah so your talking about the total amount they are allowed to sell lifetime. I was referring to the initial day one shipments.

I think it's totally feasible they can do 100k first week~ This one retailer's pre orders could easily rise to 25k in the next 3 weeks, and then you have buyers on the day. And that's just one retailer.
Over half of them wouldn't be able to afford one to start with.

100K total sales across China is very probable though.
I was mainly quoting your post for the "I read somewhere around here that the Chinese government had to approve a set amount of XB1's to be sold there. Given these circumstances I'd say this is pretty "ok" news"
Since the approved amount isn't limiting in anyway, we can't really interpret this as ok or not ok.
(unless you're suggesting they were limited initial shipment also, but there are no news that would indicate so.)
Eh?
Sunning.com only came up with ~3000 unit increase over the past 20 days.
I doubt it'll manage to hit 25k in the next 3 weeks.

It doesn't launch for another 2.5 weeks. So yeah...So it's a retailer, not sell-through to customers.
Today, WPDang reported that Microsoft is planning to release highly localized version of Halo 5 game for Chinese customers. Microsoft is even dubbing the game in Chinese, adding Chinese subtitles in a professional Shanghai film studio. This localized Halo 5 game should attract more consumers to the Xbox One platform in China.
So it's a retailer, not sell-through to customers.
That is what pre orders areSo it's a retailer, not sell-through to customers.
Hold dat L Spanish speakers.
I had the thought this is the first time MS releases a home console in China, and I thought first time for Sony, correct me if wrong, in that case.. how is that good or bad?
imagine you're coming from a PC only environment. you're used to playing whatever you want, however you want. your typical gaming experience involves a litany of free to play games that half the country logs on to simultaneously while having an entire library of supporting programs running just an alt-tab away.
then some american company rocks up and wants to charge you half the price of a new PC for a box with a relatively microscopic library of expensive games which doesn't even include the basics like LoL. it also has underwhelming specs across the board, about as much application support as the average toaster, you have to pay a monthly fee to play online and it only supports a single input device which is garbage for most genres you play.
50% of 1.3 billion is still a lot of people
And 75% of this half would rather buy an iPhone instead of an Xbox.
They would even give their organs for it.
Don't expect China as Game Changing.
Not sure why you're saying that when Sony is also launching the PS4 in China with everything you mentioned. Might be hard for you to believe but there are people in China definitely interested in both these consoles.
Nobody's saying there aren't people in China interested in consoles.
The arguments that alway's been put out is that China is a niche market, as far as consoles are concerned.
Gaming is huge in China. It's very, very, very big and generates a shitload of money. But it's practically derived entirely from the PC/Mobile F2P market, and some subscription MMOs.
There are an estimate of 250 million online PC gamers in China. Sony/MS would be lucky to even get 1% of that audience, respectively.
(Yes, my predictions for PS4/XB1 in China is that both consoles combined will have an LTD of 5 million, give or take.)
Non of that really matters when the Chinese government has already set a lifetime sales restriction of 5 million. At the absolute best scenario we already know that it can't be any higher than 5 million.
That restriction is only for XB1. I'm expecting a same restriction for PS4, but my point is I don't believe either console will reach their ceiling anyway.
That's just tales from my ass, though.
I've seen the 5 mil figure before but I thought that was just a "for the time being" thing.
So they're only allowed to ship 5 million for the lifetime of the x1?
I was under the impression that after 5M sales, they'd need to negotiate a new arrangement to cover the next 5M or whatever.I've seen the 5 mil figure before but I thought that was just a "for the time being" thing.

I guess Microsoft will be happy if they sell 5 million in the next 5 years. Same thing with PS4.
Unless they make LOL or Dota 2 exclusive i cant see consoles doing much in China.
Seems like one of the smaller sites actually

Both Xbox One and PS4 numbers in China are gonna be laughable. Dunno why people were so excited about launching there and so sure they will sell tons.
I understand why people like Dynopia are excited. It's their last hope for the Xbone to get anywhere near the PS4 in terms of worldwide sales.
So 2% sells 16k units
equals 800k units for all ?
(probably not)
