I try to be open minded about these things, but...sigh.

Zolo? What the hell? At first, I thought the subtitles on my TV were fucking with me, but holy shit if that isn't the dumbest god damn name.

I wonder if that was their choice or not...and I just rechecked the US manga release, and they didn't do that there...but I can't imagine there being copyright issues.
 
For those who couldn't see it:

Voices (this is my opinion):

Luffy - Tolerable, except for the laugh. It doesn't matter much right now, but the real test will come when Luffy actually gets mad and serious. The tone of the first few episodes doesn't really allow for this, so its going to be awhile before we figure out of the VA work holds up. The voice could be a lot better, but it could also be a lot worse. Luffy's voice is hard to translate into English well.

Nami - Didn't get too many lines, of course, but it sounded OK. Maybe a little girlier than I expected it to be (she sounds a bit more like a preteen girl than a teen girl, if you know what I mean). I can deal with this, though. Its kind of hard to really screw up a girl's voice.

Coby - As expected. He won't be around long anyway, so it doesn't much matter.

Alvida - Also as I would've imagined her. The voice fits, but they'll have to change it if/when they get Loguetown after she's eaten the Devil's Fruit




Changes:

Opening: Well, forget about keeping some facsimile of the original theme song. Though I wonder why they bothered making it if they weren't going to use it (and I'm sure this kind of thing happens a lot anyway in the business), but now its some silly rap song with retarded lyrics.

Devil Fruit: Now Cursed Fruit. Not horrible, but the VAs tend to feel the need to break up the syllables so instead of Cursed Fruit its Curs-ED Fruit.

Attack Names: Gum-Gum Rocket and Gum-Gum Pistol was changed to Gum-Gum Blast

Zoro's Name: Zolo. Would've been acceptable if they had at least TRIED to mask the l/r sound, but they instead emphasize the L making the name sound stupid.

Background Music: the normally awesome background music has, as expected by 4Kids, changed into the extremely generic music they put into all of their shows. This is something I've always wondered about. Why do they always feel its necessary to have background noise/music throughout the ENTIRE show, overemphasizing every action or minor event that occurs. It makes things goofier than they should be.

Marines: Now called the Navy. I guess it makes sense, but I wonder if they'll bother changing the Marines logo.

Line Changes: Most were actually kept more or less in tact, but a few were changed, of course. Nothing really notable, though.

Scene Changes: Not much. They actually toned down some of the violence, which isn't even that great in the firest episode (i.e. Luffy doesn't hit Coby). However, its slightly understandable because they also have to cut things out here and there to make it fit into the 17 minute US broadcast time.

Yes. Completely. 4Kids almost always does this. However, if they release uncut DVDs, it should remain intact. I think it will remain intact for the YGO uncuts.

- The font for the title was completely different. Also, the title was changed from "I'm Luffy, The Man Who Will Become The Pirate King" to "I'm Gonna Be The Pirate King"
- Everyone said water was in the barrel that Luffy was in instead of rum.
- Dialogue for Nami. Such as, “You're stepping on my toe!" when the cannons were being fired at the ship.
- When the pirates were rushing on the ship they took out the “bwum” effect.
- The blood on the wall when Coby hit the wall was taken out.
- Shortened the kick to the nuts
- Shortened the great nap line to just one short line, and they added mouth movements to Luffy for the line.
- The thing about Coby being weak was shortened. Also, Luffy said, "You're gonna be working for them the rest of your life." instead of “Oh, you are a coward. I don't like you. Hahaha.” Which is completely different.
- No eyecatch.
- When Coby was shouting at Luffy about being a pirate, they took out mention of the Grand Line
- Luffy hitting Coby was taken out and they talked about it.
- Marine was changed to Navy. They also edited the sails on the Marine ships to say Navy.
- Zoro was changed to Zolo. They also called him a samurai.
- Gomu Gomu became Gum Gum
- Devil Fruit was changed to Cursed Fruit
- Luffy's remark of wanted 10 crewmates was taken out

Also, anybody else notice that they VERY SPECIFICALLY said Gold Roger was hung from the gallows? OOPS.

I guess nobody at 4Kids has actually ever watched this show before.

And why does Nami sound like Flonne from Disgaea? Talk about not matching the character. She also refers to herself as a "lady pirate" which she never did in the early episodes, preferring to call herself a thief to show her disdain of pirates.

Basically, there's no hope for this show at all. Luffy can never talk seriously with his voice, you can't possibly take a guy named "Zolo" seriously, none of the serious issues and events of the show can be done, and to top it all off none of the great music that helped set the mood remains, replaced entirely by a 1980s Casio soundtrack.

The opening rap was HILARIOUS.

Well done, 4Kids. You did not disappoint.

You know what, I don't care about all but two of the changes. Expecting some brilliant dub is too much for almost any show. Cutting the show down to an insane 17m just to fit some hulk hogan footage? Whatever.

But changing Zoro to Zolo and replacing the BGM with the same boring shit thats on every other cartoon? Those are the kind of baseless marketing decisions that can kill a show's popularity.

I didn't even notice that. Sanji is totally getting the shaft. But at least Zoro is getting saddled with a stupid name.

As long as they don't decide to call Sanji "Francois" or something like that. :lol

I wasn't hoping for brilliant. Hell, I was barely hoping for mediocre. And they still failed.

I pray every day that it fails. This is already reminding me of the Fox Kids hack job of Escaflowne. I mean, they're calling it Shonen Jump's One Piece right? How the hell do they expect to market it to people reading Shonen Jump if they're changing everything??
 
That edits list is still missing some stuff.

I'm pretty bummed. I thought this episode would get away without too many edits since it was already toned down (from the manga) for broadcast in Japan, but they pretty much took everything out. Even the silly sounds Luffy makes for no reason at all - GONE. And those are half the fun of the show.

Well, here's hoping we'll at least get uncut DVDs.
 
Uh, there's already a licensed character named "Zorro," and lawyers aren't going to give a shit if they're spelled different. Get over it.

Amazing how they managed to remove the smoking references, though. I wonder how much that cost.
 
I understand the legal reasoning, but Zolo still sounds dumb as hell.

And I really don't know how they are planning to take care of editing all of the smoking references out. At least short of editing out several minutes of footage completely. Like the first time you meet Smoker....there is NO WAY to edit that. You either have to redraw the whole thing or axe it altogether.
 
Anyway, in order to cleanse myself of the sour mood of this morning, I went back and watched tons of One Piece, which did indeed make me feel better.

You can do the same thing too, because episode 109 is coming your way in ONE HALF HOUR.

Wow, 109 was really good. Now that we're really rolling, this Arabasta arc totally rocks.

And more of Sanji being beyond awesome. :D
 
They should have bananawanis in every episode. Luffy and Usopp's reactions to them are just too funny.

Yeah, I thought their absence was both hilarious and really bizarre. I mean, I can sort of understand Sanji, cause it'll be well into Spring by the time he joins up, but I mean, Usopp shows up around around episode what? 8? 9?

While we're on the topic, sort of, what do you think the odds are that Usopp will be Hispanic in the dub? I've been giving this some thought today, and I think this is only slightly less likely than Sanji being French.

nah. in the amount of time for sanji to take care of one, luffy and zoro took the rest of them and there were quite a few of 'em around. but sanji doesgets style points.

Remember Sanji had never even MET
Mr. 3 before this episode, and he still whipped his ass that easily. And yet the whole rest of the team nearly got their asses killed against him.
 
Well, Sanji never actually encountered Mr. 3 before. We had no idea what he could do to em. :) Also, Mr. 3 used the rest of his strength to make the Doru Doru Ball. I mean, sure, he threw the key away, but I doubt he'd have enough strength to fight with any of them. They'll increase in power once they actually get down to the singular fights later in the arc. :)
 
You guys know that XXX for One Piece already right? Their is a single torrent for it out that is on a site that will get me banned if I even mention it.
 
You guys get off a little easy since the One Piece Dub is so bad (oh the shame, the shame). No more exceptions after this =P.
