Overwatch porn is being forced offline by DMCA takedown notices

Shouldn't this be a sticky thread?

They were never your waifus.

You misunderstood. I'm aping blizzard while saying that line.

i.e. the insinuation here is that Blizzard don't want to see this because they feel particularly emotionally attached to their creations and jealously guard their chastity.

Of course once I had to explain it, it's kinda dumb, but it was a throw-away line!

Try not to design your characters to be so attractive next time, then.

Not that that stopped people in the past. I mean, look at Elizabeth.

I wonder if we're ever going to see devs allowing (not creating or stimulating) licensed porn and receiving royalties, in our lifetime.
I can see this fan porn phenomenon only increasing in the future. Might as well stop fighting it and take profits.

For every video Blizzard takes down, fans will upload a million more.

There is no escape.

Videos were flooding certain sites weeks before the game was even out.

The quality of some of these videos is remarkable, to say the least. Or so I heard...

Patreon has its ups and downs but it's allowed all kinds of artists to thrive, whether it's NSFW or not. I'm all for the model it introduced. It gives people who love doing this stuff a revenue stream that's separate from straight 'selling people shit' which these days, with porn/art being freely distributed illegally or legally, is a godsend for certain artists.

I don't understand how they can make profit from copyright. Is it fair use if you're making profit using already trademarked characters and using them for things like pornography?

They're not "selling" anything. You're supporting them by giving them money, which allows them to continue making the art/videos. The pictures and videos usually get online to be freely viewed.

Surely the porn is basically free advertising.

If even one person jacks off to Bastion, then buys the game, that is a net win for Blizzard, no?

It's blizzard trying to cultivate a certain image. Note every video released so far has shown absolutely ZERO blood despite this being a shooter. The only character to even die, was a robot by widowmaker, and even that they didn't actually show the bullet hit.

So when you have places like Kotaku then shining a spotlight on the porn people are making from your game...

Like it or not Overwatch has the image that it is full of hot ladies.
People want porn, other people make the porn.

Blizzard can try to hold onto their PC image as much as they want, but they can't stop people making porn.
Trying to fight against it, is like trying to hold back the tide. Impossible.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
And nothing of value was lost.

Basically. Porn being posted to the front page of reddit on main-subs (/r/gaming) and elsewhere for Overwatch has been cringy as fuck. I got nothing against whatever you choke your chicken to, but don't be posting that shit in the open. Put it in a dedicated subreddit/section where it isn't going to be plastered all over the place for a kid or someone that doesn't want that will see it.

I don't disagree, and I don't think Blizzard thinks it can stop it either... The point is that they put on a show about it.

When they market the game to teens, and someone cries fowl because of all the porn links that pop up when you search for it, Blizzard can say "We tried to take it down, but the internet is going to internet."

Blizzard 'fights' porn involving characters from a game.

Oh Blizzard has a new game? I should check it out.

Blizzard's lawyers and marketing department are loving this.

the way I see it, all Overwatch fans are now automatically presumed sexual deviants

I was a sexual deviant before the world introduced Mei-Ling Zhou to me and I'll continue being a sexual deviant long after this!

I guess what I'm saying is...VIVA LA D.VA!

In all seriousness though, Blizzard or whomever is doing this is insane to think this is going to stop.

As this thread has proven, if somebody wants it then somebody will be there to provide it because of the money involved.

I understand the stance of not wanting your IP not being a SFM haven for porn, however Tracer some Mercy to a Widowmaker and this'll happen.

This didn't become a thing for real until the whole Tracer butt fiasco and the ball's been rolling ever since just to spite Blizzard on that call anyway.

Blizzard accidently opened the door to this a whole lot sooner and maybe they could've controlled this if they didn't but it's too late.

For every one there'll be 5 more!

I'm not saying they have to sit back and accept this but I know they don't mind all the eyes on their legit product from the porn that's getting the game in faces that wouldn't care otherwise.

Now with this being the call watch how much Overwatch porn drops just to spite Blizzard!

Just have some Mei for me please!

They won't stop this. Just a desperate move to hope people don't randomly come across any of it when searching for the game. I guarantee they stop giving a shit in a month or 2.

Anyone else suspecting they are doing this fully aware of the Streissand effect simply for publicity?

They can't stop this, but at least they can pretend they tried when people also pretend they are upset.

And also for this: plausible deniability.

well, porn. Kotaku did an impressively in-depth report on the phenomenon a few days ago

The real reason gators hate Kotaku writers: envy. Wouldn't want to be them if they had to take work home and explain it to their wives, though. :D

Meanwhile at Gearbox:

Won't somebody please make some Battleborn porn?

OK, this cracked me up. To be fair you could also say Battleborn designs aren't cartoony and conventionally attractive (which never stopped the Internet in the past, but still).

Lol no. There's has been a lot OW porn even on regular non SFM porn sites way before the Tracer butt thing.

This is not a consequence on what Blizz did or did not with their characters, or how they designed them. Sadly, every female character in a videogame has her model ripped and ready to do porn in a day, even if it's not sexualized.

It can end up being kinda creepy, but whatever turns people on I guess.

Didn't say that at all.

When the beta hit SFM's were all over the place because those artists do their thing and always were doing their thing. Those artists do that for everything that has a model so nothing new at all. Just like you said.

That night when the news hit about Tracer however, Overwatch porn became a real thing.

The phenomenon that this thread is all about.

Everywhere you could post art about Tracer's butt was being posted on en mass!

That news put that game in the crosshairs for folks to go to town and it hasn't been the same since then.

This being both the gift and the curse Blizzard is now trying to attempt to contain.

I'd almost be inclined to agree, but as far as Studio FOW goes with their WoW film after Kotaku wrote an article on it, Blizzard went on Take 2/private investigator levels of attack.
