Pachter: 'High PS3 price is killing Sony'

I need Pactcher to get his ass kicked by a rapper playing Street Fighter IV. Then I can finally and truly disregard his whole fucking act.

Also the sort of bagging on Pachter stuff for these particular commets is a bit silly. How news generally works is a publication calls up somebody and asks them to comment on a bit of recent news (in this case Sony's recent financial losses) and they report it. Its obvious because they most likely asked an obvious question which is sort of the point.

GAF is quite amazing.

When i'm telling you this you all go like "meh, not true, Sony can't afford, yada yada".

When it's Patcher telling you you're all go like "meh, captain obvious, no shit sherlock".

It is true and Sony can't afford it. It's a rough place to be.

So you are saying the PS3 is in third place because it has no games?

You couldn't have possibly inferred that from what I said. There's no way. You're bringing up this falsehood because you want to. Don't fucking drag me into it man.

This is why GAF doesn't understand Pachter. If a journalist called one of us, they'd either receive a series of intricate charts or a .gif of a man slapping a woman followed by a series of LOL's.

It all depends on how quick Sony can get smaller CPU/GPUs and a cheaper motherboard with less components. The PS3 is even at $399 good value for money considering what you get, but it's just not competitive enough for mainstream consumers. If Sony wants to keep up with MS it simply has to get the price difference between the PS3 and 360 down. It was doing fine for most of 2008, but Microsoft's last price cut and the worsening economical climate threw a big wrench in Sony's marketing machine.

So why is the PS3 in third place? Media conspiracy?

You don't think this fucking accountant has been sucking at the milky teet of noteriety a bit too much these days? How come when a journalist calls you for the 50th time you need to go on the record at all?

You may be one of those guys who thinks the X-Box is going to go on a sabbatical, but let me and my main man Micheal tell you, the X-Box isn't going on any sabbatical.

I actually do not entirely agree with him. When I bought a 360 a few weeks ago it was because it had games I want to play. The consoles are similar but it's silly to just pretend they're the same thing and price is the only factor.

More anecdotal evidence: My 12 year old cousin wanted to get a PS3 over a 360 but couldn't justify the price difference to his parents, so he settled for a 360. There must be a lot of kids like that.

To be fair I think both consoles have a decent library of games now, it is the other things that are dictating sales now: price, peer-pressure/critical mass, advertising etc and Microsoft seem to be winning those battles at the moment.

Look, I'm just trying to force this horse to drink some water, OK?

You're one of those guys who says: "Oh so Game A is better than Game B?" when Game A gets a 9 and Game B gets an 8, right?

I hate those guys.

Because it's part of his job? The rest of your post is apparently nonsense words thrown together, so I won't respond. Who opened the crazy box today?

It will be quite interesting to see how the numbers come in next week for last quarter. I suspect it's going to be pretty bad. It should provide a gauge on how likely or not a price cut can be afforded in April or not. Or like Pachter says, April fools. It really could be next fall at this rate.

This thread reminded me of this:
Pachter said:
He then provided further analysis: "Please keep in mind that both consoles are offered in North America, Europe and Japan. Sony likely has a 4 million unit lead in Japan, is behind by 7 million in North America, and is behind in Europe by 2 million. My guess is that Sony can sell 2 million PS3s per year more than Microsoft in Japan for the next several years, and can catch up in Europe in two or three years. So by the end of 2011, Sony should be even in Europe, ahead by 10 million units in Japan, and behind by a greater margin than 7 million in North America. If the Xbox 360 outsells the PS3 by 1 million units per year for 2009, 2010 and 2011, the two consoles will be in a dead heat by the end of 2011.
Gotta be a typo, right?

The 360 and PS3 look great, but they don't look appreciably different than the very best I've seen on the current Xbox. I'm sure that part of the reason that I'm not really impressed yet is that they haven't spent enough time to make everything totally fluid, motion fluid. But if the Revolution is two or three times faster than the Game Cube, why can't they get something that looks very realistic? I think they will.

In 2010, Sony's going to have 55 per cent, Microsoft's going to have 35 per cent and Nintendo 10 per cent

And if there are more games available on the Revolution, the Revolution will do better than people expect. I don't think that'll happen

My point, and the point of many other posters in this thread, is that he's run out of things to say. Hence the Captain Obvious references.

You can always tell when people run out of things to say. They start throwing together nonsense like the idea of a game console going or not going on a sabbatical.

I don't know why most of you are ridiculing Pachter.

He understands the number game as well as some of you GAFers, except he's getting paid for it while the rest of you are holding your dicks and spouting the same information for free on an almost weekly basis.

So who's the real idiot?

Does he really, really get paid for this?

Man I should be a game market analysist.

No he doesn't. Your average Gaffer schools this guy in ten seconds. There was a thread yesterday where he over-estimated the PS3 install base in Japan buy 5 million units or some such nonsense.

And yeah I'm with you. Can you get into "game market analysis" or whatever the hell he does with a BS in Marketing and a Docterate in GAF? Cause if so I've found my career.

Tobor said:
He assumes a price drop there. He's still wrong IMO, but that's his justification.
Read again:

Sony likely has a 4 million unit lead in Japan
We know Japanese hw #'s, he's way off here.

PS3 2,711,226
360 860,788

2 million PS3s per year more
They didn't even hit a million this year...

GAF has already obliterated that one with awesome European history references.
Thanks.

So he should refuse to answer the journalist, which is part of his job description, because GAF feels he's repeating himself? Can GAF call my boss and tell him I don't want to work today either?(Oh wait, I am off today. Thanks GAF!)

Pachter just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about video game industry analysis (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in predicting the rising and setting of the sun where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in a gaming industry prediction, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Wedbush Morgan board members, after hearing about this, are not going to want to buy Pachter's analyses for any price, nor will they pay attention to anything he says anymore. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Pachter has alienated an entire company with this move.

Pachter, publicly apologize and tell us PS3 is at the perfect price point or you can kiss your job goodbye.

Imagine a PS3 with no BluRay. My what a great console that would be.

Yeah.. it would be just as feature incomplete as it is now with sub-par ports execpt without the most appealing component of the system that distinguishes itself from the competition. Bravo.

What? He stated the obvious because the obvious is obvious. They went to him because he's someone who has spoken on the industry before and not someone who posts on a messageboard all day (although he does have an account here).

It's fine to complain if he makes obvious errors but if someone asks you is 2+2=4 and you say yes that not's really warranting of dude that's so obvious!

The more obvious gesture imo is posting and obvious new thread when it would have probably fit in 20 other obvious threads.

If you want to complain at anybody complain at the site for going to the usual sources instead of different sources.

How would it have sub-par ports when the system the games are being ported from/to use DVD as well?

And then making obvious posts about how obvious it is.

The real question is why journalist are they still calling him, he either has been totaly wrong or stating the obviuos..

Read your own post again. Seriously, read it and understand what you're asking. Why would anyone keep talking if they are constantly repeating themselves? Who would do that besides attention whores who have fallen in love with the idea that they're a voice in the media.

In 2010, Sony's going to have 55 per cent, Microsoft's going to have 35 per cent and Nintendo 10 per cent

Why shouldn't we be pointing out this guy's hot air?
