EA shoot to the top of the All Formats Chart this week as ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’ debuts at No1 putting an end to Ubisoft’s 4-week run.

It’s not surprising to see FIFA depose Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction’ from top spot with what is the World Cup themed version of the 10th biggest selling game ever in the UK, ‘FIFA 10’. During this week in World Cup Year 2006, the launch of ‘FIFA World Cup Germany 2006’ represented 15% of FIFA 2006’s launch week. ‘2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa’, although released on only XB360, PS3, PSP and Wii (compared to 7 formats in 2006), performs in a similar fashion, recording 14.6% of FIFA 10’s launch week. The PS3 version just pips XB360, accounting for 48%, XB360 47% with PSP and Wii making up the rest. It was the other way round at the launch of FIFA 10 with XB360 48% and PS3 46%. At No2 this week is another reinterpretation of a classic with ‘Super Street Fighter IV’ debuting ahead of Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’.

Sales of ‘Just Dance’ dip by only 5% putting it ahead of Ubisoft’s very own ‘Splinter Cell: Conviction’ which falls from No1 to No4 with a 37% drop in sales despite the release of the PC version this week. Sales of the 3 week old PS3 and PC versions of ‘GTA: Episodes from Liberty City’ (–32%) are slowing meaning a dip from No3 to No5 for the Rockstar title. Nintendo’s ‘Wii Fit Plus’ and ‘Wii Sports Resort’ both perform well this week with sales up 20% and 27% respectively, positioning them at No’s 6 and 7. EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ rallies at No8, down 2 places, but managing a 7% rise in sales. ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (+42%) still hasn’t dropped out of the Top 10, boosted by price promotions on Xbox 360, only slipping one place to No9. There is a third new entry in the All Formats Top 10 this week with the HD, next-gen ports of the first two God of War games, ‘God of War Collection’, debuting at No10 on PS3. One other new game makes the All Formats Top 40 this week – Sega’s ‘Iron Man 2’ at No20.

2010 Fifa World Cup PS3 version outsold the 360 version? WTF?

Was any plataform specific sale on a supermarket? I remember seeing the same price for both plataforms in all online retailers when I was looking for a place to import.

Tri holding on OK (though it would have been nice to get a percentage drop there) in spite of 5 high-profile new entries. Will be interesting to see what happens next week.

Yakuza 3 - welcome back! Slow but steady sales could mean satisfactory numbers in the end, certainly compared to some other Sega franchises.

MH3 is 12th in the All Format charts, which is not really telling given the ones right below (FF, Avatar, Pokémon, etc.)

Surprised to see PS3 over 360 for FIFA. This weekend I saw three separate people in the pub reviewing their purchases, all 3 had bought Orange Box on PS3. Crazy.

I Ctrl+F'd PSP and got excited this week. F*cking press release.

I was a part of that, the game was £17.50 from Zavvi, couldn't resist.

Mirror's Edge at 25.

Given that game's MSRP, exactly how much was it on sale for, 5 pounds? O_o
Could it be that GAME Uk promotion?! It had an incredibly low price (maybe 3 pounds or something) but I can't remember right now if the offer was for the 360 SKU. :-/

EDIT: anyway it's selling for 5 pounds, now. :D

£3 at Game.co.uk for one day last week.

Just goes to show how poor the sales must be down the last 20 or so places.

Football games on PS3 usually do punch above their wieght. FIFA 10 was close aswell at launch. I think it has something to do with the amount of advirtising Sony put into football matches.

Watching the Premier League, i did notice on a few games that GAME had advertisements to pre-order the PS3 version of World Cup only, so the extra advertising may of helped.

I dont know i got the 360 version coming and cant wait.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, that does help shed some interesting light on it all.

Football is associted with the Playstation brand, for one the advert for the game was only for the PS3. Also anyone whom has watched a footaball match will see the Sony and Playstation brand plastered everywhere.

Just Dance is simply insane

This chart is starting to show the shift from 360 to PS3 in the UK.

It's hard to find a friend that doesn't own a PS3 nowadays.

It's been a long time coming, but I think the days of 360 UK-dominance are over. I wouldn't say the PS3 is ahead, but a year ago I only had friends with 360s, now I have 4 friends with PS3s. Small sample I know, but it's in line with what we're seeing in the weekly charts.

Good, not great for Monster Hunter Tri, but it's on Wii and its... Monster Hunter, so I guess it's doing pretty nice.

GO! Playing for 140hs! :D

Fuck it, i'm buying Monster Hunter Tri!

I have no time for it and i'm sure i'l end up being a shitty and frustrated MH player but hey

I think bar FIFA (helped thanks to it being cheap) sales look pretty poor across the board again this week (worst week for 4 years last week and sales dipping further on titles mentioned in the OP). I thought SSFVI would have done better it being again cheap.

Hardly a comparison when no other MH game has had a comrable advertising and marketing.

Do we really hve to go through this with every high-profile Wii Release? So many excuses :/

Somehow the fact that there are five new releases explains the drop, even though the five new releases were all PS360 games and I can count 5 games that went up on the charts this week. >_>

This is getting ridiculous. Many of you seem as eager to declare it a bomb as others are to declare it a success.

Advertising doesn't change what the series is and how it has performed in the past. Some perspective is needed here.

The worst is, the same people labeling it a "Bomb" are the ones screaming success at stuff like Heavy Rain when it hangs on in the bottom of the charts or QQing about Just Dance.

Heavy Rain "only" sold about 86.000 units the first week versus the around 17.000 of MH Tri.

Mario Kart Wii sells consistently 8-10K per week. This week it dropped 9 places with 6 new games in front of it. Therefore, MH3 probably sold 10-12K on the low end. Considering it launched at ~17K, that's a pretty good hold. Anyone saying that it's dropping like a rock or bombing more than it was last week is just trying to troll its performance this week. It debuted not good last week, but it's held up better than a lot of core focused games this week.

<insert nli10's line about Wii games often having legs>

The marketing push behind Heavy Rain dwarfs anything Monster Hunter Tri got. It's just all around hypocrisy and people are way too eager to label a wii game as a bomb or as an anomaly.

MHT is performing decently compared to any MH game prior to it. That means, it's outselling them.

The Wii has like double the userbase though :P Dunno about marketing presence of either title, but yes, I agree that it's more complex than "lol bomba".

Most Wii games see thier sales rise in the second week, not fall. For what is probably the most heavily promoted Wii game since Mario and Sonic its sales are disapointing by any normal metric. Its far from reaching the sales of any run of the mill PS3/360 multiplatform "core" title, which, for the single biggest third party "core" title on Wii just isn't good enough really.

Holding the 12 spot with 4 new releases, given the frontloaded nature of Monster Hunter, is not bad at all. Not sure what did you guys expect.

I honestly thought it would have a much bigger drop.

People really want Monster Hunter Tri to bomb. :lol

And it's quite sad, because we are all gamers and Monster Hunter Tri - or any other in the series - deserves the best, on the Wii, PSP or
iPhone
.

I don't think that's true at all. Most big Nintendo games do that, but I don't think its the norm.

Again, I don't live in Europe, but are you telling me MH Tri is receiving more advertising than Wii Fit Plus and NSMB Wii received?

Jesus. We literally have somewhat concrete numbers from one 3 day period from one country and you honestly feel that you can make that statement? Are you shitting me?

Getting back to my earlier point, which a lot of people tend to ignore. This isn't some typical action game or FPS. This is a series with, quite frankly, gameplay that seems pretty uncommon for typical Western tastes. I can't speak for the UK, but there is a reason the series has only done about 150K lifetime in the biggest market in the world. And the reason isn't just "advertising." Yes, this is the biggest advertised and highest profile Wii 3rd party game so far. That doesn't mean its destined to outsell games from established and popular Western genres.
