We don't have that level of accuracy, all those rounded half percents and thousands can add up to a margin of error of several percent (we're even completely missing 2% from CoD and 1% from AC this week).

I think the upper limit for the titles in the bottom half may be a bit high this week from not having any ~numbers for titles near the bottom (no FIFA Wii this week), on the other hand sales should be starting to see a seasonal rise.

My mind got wrapped up in numbers and bong hits and this is what popped out. Let me know if I made an error somewhere and this is all garbage.

I think we should be able to use the PS3 version of Skyrim to narrow the range since it's above Saints Row's ~30,000. Lowest possible total sales should be ~107,000. Just Dance 3 on the Wii is also ahead of SR so that means the total being above 32,500. Can also set a floor for MJ using the Wii version and total should be above 27,000. 360 version of BF being above 20,000 gives us the floor.
(All Numbers were calc'd rounding down so it's safe to say these are all the mins.)

Ranges(all formats)
Skyrim 107,000-117,000
Halo/Zelda 40,000-55,000
BF3 40,000-45,000
JD3/Mario 32,500-45,000
NFS 27,000-39,000
MJ 27,000-35,000
Lego 20,500-35,000
Zumba 13,500-23,000
U3 13,500-20,000
M&S 11,500-20,000

NFS floor gives us a min of 13,500 for the PS3 version which gives us Zumba floor and U3 floor. PS3 Lego has a floor of 4,400 due to Wii FIFA which gives us the total Lego floor. M&S floor found using 360 NFS.

Owch. That has to be one of the worst debuts for a Zelda ever! Legs or not, that's is a major bomb. And Mario did even worse. Nintendo must have really lost mindshare in Europe, big time.

Well, that or it got seriously overshadowed. Either way, Zelda has fallen.

LOL

UK = Europe

Then I guess in EU the Xbox360 is smashing success and PS3 on the verge of dying!

Zelda will sell more than fine.

M.I.S said:
It certainly made me think twice as although there were some last minute deals, price was the determining factor. You're typically looking at a price of ÂŁ50 with WM+ and ÂŁ35 without (whereas premium games like, say, SMG / SMG2 were both typically ÂŁ30).

I eventually just bought the game for ÂŁ31.50 from Sendit with a dicount code. I "borrowed" the WM+ from somewhere else.

It's not ÂŁ50 with Wii Motion Plus.
It's bundled with a Wii Remote Plus, huuuuge difference.

Zeldas sales sadly fall in line with what I expected. It's still too early to say the game bombed (let's see if nintendo's leg magic will be at work here), but Skyward's circumstances always made sales in the lower end of the series level rather likely, I think. IMO there are three important points in Skywards disfavor: 1) The decline of the Wii and its loss of mindshare among both casual gamer and (especially) core gamers. Considering that Zelda was always more of an enthusiasts franchise (despite being popular among casual gamers), this isn't very good at all. But to make this worse it also makes heavy use of 2) motion controls. And whiled I personally love Skyward's controls, it's not very difficult to see that many people pass on it for that reason. Most core gamers decided themselves a long time ago against motion controls and nothing will change that opinion anymore. And then there is the last point: 3) the graphics. I adore skywards visual design, but it's not even a matter of discussion that comic style in Zelda games is largely seen as a negative by most.

Well, and Nintendo's marketing is shit. As if they don't even try to sell the game. At least in Germany I haven't seen a single commercial for the game so far. It's far worse than the marketing OoT3D got some months ago.

I...I fear Rayman Origins will be a serious bomb on HD.

Right now, 360 version is in 340th position, while the PS3 one is 320th...and the Wii version is 135th. Rayman saved by Wii?

The HD positions are even more depressing thinking that even Tales of the Abyss on 3DS is 100 positions higher than them.

looks like it was too late for SS. Nintendo's abandonment of the Wii is biting them in the ass badly. that's what they get for not supporting the console for like 2-3 years (the good games they released in that period would be the equivalent to 1 year of many of their past consoles).

they seriously need more devs to support 2 systems at once because they can't just abandon one platfor for the other one (abandoning the Wii for the 3DS and also abandoning the GC for the DS made both former systems suffer at the end)

nevermind the fact they're already outsourcing several of the games they release and you have to really question their ability to support 2 platforms at once by themselves (let's be real, third partiles will never support them properly. 15+ years of the same bullshit make it obvious. at this point, since nintendo entered the videogame business, they now have more time with bad third part support than good support and only 3 of their platforms got good support, with 2 of them being because the competition was shit)

they can still do a Wii-U port and recover some sales if the game ends up that bad in sales.

I agree. Was inevitable really. In this release window as a $60 (beautiful) cutesy platformer.

Hell I even bought Kirby's Epic Yarn as a Christmas present for my gf's younger sister because it was €20 cheaper than Rayman.

I don't think it was inevitable, and I don't think timing will have much to do with the game's bombing (should it bomb), especially if even the Wii version fails to sell. Consumers may have limited amounts of money at any given point in time, but 2D platformers are a rare, yet popular genre (see NSMB) with a different appeal than the type of games being released right now. If the game fails, it will mostly have to do with the game itself not being appealing.

The problem is any time nintendo release a game that is even slightly catered towards the hardcore they don't bother advertisement. Right now in Australia pretty much the only advertising you will see from nintendo is for the casual stuff on DS and wii.

I haven't seen any adverts for zelda and not many for mario. When you combine the lack of adverts with the complete loss of mindshare for the wii you have a recipe for an average selling zelda.

I also strongly disagree that the sales had anything to do with adding motion controls. I don't see how this could affect sales when they have done such a poor job communicating this fact. That plus the wii has built it's userbase around motion controls. If someone was that turned off by motion controls i'm surprised they would really have a wii.

Nintendo are really going to have their work cut out for them next gen.

Edit:

NSMB is more the outlier than the norm and it had a few things going for it that few other games do. I don't think it should be the case but in todays climate selling a 2D platformer as a full retail game is a very tough ask.

Or maybe developers in general just suck at making compelling 2D platformers and giving them the exposure they need (SEGA being the most egregious example, see Sonic 4 and Generations).

I don't really buy this considering nintendos own platformers have struggled to gain any traction (except for the ones that are a seqeul to a previous big selling franchise like mario or DK). Considering the reviews and general response to rayman it's pretty hard to blame it's sales on that.

I think your second point is the reason. Most 2D platformer games are simply given no exposure. I doubt people aren't buying it because of the quality because i doubt people have any idea about how good or bad rayman is (or that it even exists). The fact that it got released in the christmas rush will only help getting it buried where no one will see it.

Nintendo hasn't made a whole lot of "new" platformers though. Sure, they made a console Wario Land game - a series which they has struggled to create any excitement ever since the last GBA installment - and finally started releasing the Starfy games in the West - which never had any measurable impact in the first place. Apart from that, few developers have tried their hands at the genre this generation, and most if not all of them have been doing it wrong. For some reason Henry Hatsworth and A Boy and his Blob keep jumping to my mind. HH was too complicated for its own good (who wants a platformer that's a puzzle game at the same time?), whereas the original ABAHB was never a particularly successful game on the NES. And then you've got SEGA, who won't put the effort (shitty Sonic 4 in episodic form) or show enough confidence in the series (3D Sonic in Sonic Generations).

A reason. Price is another. But the core of the problem is and will always be the game itself. I have yet to buy Rayman Origins (I will eventually), but from what I've played, seen and heard, the two main problems IMO (which really are one problem) are that 1) the visuals are not that functional, it's sometimes hard to see where your character is and make out what's what, especially in multiplayer, and 2) the atmosphere feels like a weird departure from classic Rayman (from a sense of wonder to a bunch of teenage weirdos, and the music is all over the place). Both issues stem from the game's art direction.

I'm not saying that the game would sell tons weren't it for those issues, because let's face it Rayman was never quite as successful as Mario, Sonic, Mega Man or Kirby, but I suspect they will limit its sales potential. That said, the game gets kudos for having 4-player co-op and for bringing elements and characters from the original Rayman (albeit with a twisted artstyle, sadly).

And then there's the possibility that those are not that big of an issue and the game will sell decently and I'll eat crow. We'll see.

ouch @ 3DS software. I don't even want to think about how bad the hardware was.

Nintendo have also made a kirby game this gen and i don't think it sold all that much even being an established franchise. Now that you mention it tough there haven't been that many attempts at a quality 2D platformer i'm actually struggling to remember any (besides the downloadable games like super meat boy of course).

A reason. Price is another.

100% agree with this. As much as we may dislike it for the most part the general consumer don't see 2D platformers as being worth as much as other genres. I know DK and NSMB buck this trend but in general i think it's going to get harder and harder to sell these games as full retail game.

There's your first problem. Most people haven't played, seen or heard about rayman so i doubt they're in a position to judge it's quality.

I also think the problems you mention aren't very significant and i hadn't even noticed them myself until you mentioned them (and i still don't mind them). The game being a departure from the old rayman games shouldn't really affect sales considering they weren't that popular to begin with.

One of the most mainstream ways for a general consumer to assess a games quality is to look at reviews. This game got great reviews.

We'll see.

Those factor may limit it's sales but they shouldn't be enough to cause the game to go into total obscurity.

I don't think we will ever know for sure what the reason is for this game bombing (i know it hasn't happened yet but i think it's very likely).

Sep, 2011

This must be 360 version.

I'm going overseas for several months later this week, if anyone wants to take over here's the formulae for calculating first week sales from the monthly chart;

M = Total Monthly Sales

W2 = Week 2 sales ratio compared to previous week (Chart-Track blurb)
W3 = Week 3 〃
W4 = Week 4 〃
W5 = Week 5 〃

S1 = Week 1 sales ratio of single format (Guardian splits)
S2 = Week 2 〃
S3 = Week 3 〃
S4 = Week 4 〃
S5 = Week 5 〃

Code:
[B]2 Weeks All Formats[/B]
M x (1 / (1 + W2)) =

[B]3 Weeks All Formats[/B]
M x (1 / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3))) =

[B]4 Weeks All Formats[/B]
M x (1 / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3) + (W2 x W3 x W4))) =

[B]5 Weeks All Formats[/B]
M x (1 / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3) + (W2 x W3 x W4) + (W2 x W3 x W4 x W5))) =

[B]2 Weeks Individual Format[/B]
M / ((S1 + (W2 x S2)) / (1 + W2))

[B]3 Weeks Individual Format[/B]
M / ((S1 + (W2 x S2) + (W2 x W3 x S3)) / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3)))

[B]4 Weeks Individual Format[/B]
M / ((S1 + (W2 x S2) + (W2 x W3 x S3) + (W2 x W3 x W4 x S4)) / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3) + (W2 x W3 x W4)))

[B]5 Weeks Individual Format[/B]
M / ((S1 + (W2 x S2) + (W2 x W3 x S3) + (W2 x W3 x W4 x S4) + (W2 x W3 x W4 x W5 x S5)) / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3) + (W2 x W3 x W4) + (W2 x W3 x W4 x W5)))

Weeks in months:

JAN - 01,02,03,04
FEB - 05,06,07,08
MAR - 09,10,11,12,13
APR - 14,15,16,17
MAY - 18,19,20,21
JUN - 22,23,24,25,26
JUL - 27,28,29,30
AUG - 31,32,33,34
SEP - 35,36,37,38,39
OCT - 40,41,42,43
NOV - 44,45,46,47
DEC - 48,49,50,51,52

If we have total sales across all formats for the month it's simply a matter of using the All Formats formula for the number of weeks the title was available that month.

Example; Batman released week 42 on X360 and PS3, so was available for only 2 weeks in October where it sold 294,000 across All Formats. Second week it dropped 52%, a ratio of 0.48 compared to the previous week;

2 Weeks All Formats
M x (1 / (1 + W2)) =
294,000 x (1 / (1 + 0.48)) = 198,648.649

First week sales of ~199k.

For titles where we don't have every platform in the monthly console chart (includes any title with a PC SKU) we first have to calculate total sales across all platforms with the Individual Formats formula.

Example; Just Dance 3 released week 41 on Wii and X360, so was available for 3 weeks in October, where it sold 119,000 on Wii, but we don't have the X360 sales. Second week it dropped 12%, a ratio of 0.88 compared to the previous week. Coincidentally it also dropped by 12% (0.88 ratio) on the third week. First week sales ratio for Wii was 0.92, second week was 0.93, and third week was 0.94.

3 Weeks Individual Format
M / ((S1 + (W2 x S2) + (W2 x W3 x S3)) / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3)))
119,000 / ((0.92 + (0.88 x 0.93) + (0.88 x 0.88 x 0.94)) / (1 + 0.88 + (0.88 x 0.88))) = 128,074.034

All formats monthly sales of ~128k

We can then use that figure in the All Formats formula to calculate first week sales;

3 Weeks All Formats
M x (1 / (1 + W2 + (W2 x W3))) =
128,074.034 x (1 / (1 + 0.88 + (0.88 x 0.88))) = 48,249.7114

First week sales of ~48k.

Protip: Google makes a great calculator, just cut and paste the equations and search.

If any mathematicians have a simpler way please post :)

Your absence will be greatly felt on this forum.

Thanks, I'll still post occasionally, but don't think I'll have regular internet access.

BF3 released last week of October, the closer split between X360 and PS3 versions seems to confirm the PS3 and PC LEs were missing from the Guardian splits. After the first week we only got X360 and PS3 splits, which suggests the two missing bottom SKUs were both PC versions.

Don't take these figures as exact as they're calculated from rounded figures, and 90% as usual;

Battlefield 3 (calculated):

Code:
WK	WK%	ALL	X360%	X360	PS3%	PS3	PC%	PC
43	-	403774	0.53	214000	0.36	144000	0.11	45774

44	0.46	185736	0.53	98440	0.37	68722	0.10	18574
45	0.38	70580	0.49	34584	0.43	30349	0.08	5646
46	0.60	42348	0.50	21174	0.44	18633	0.06	2541
47	0.96    40654
Total		702438	0.52	368198	0.37	261704	0.10	72535

Same issue with Batman, multiple SKUs, but we only get % for Top4, thus weekly individual totals are under-estimated by 7% week 42, but this quickly drops to only 2% the next week as LEs and SEs sell out. This doesn't affect the all format figures though.

Batman: Arkham City (calculated):

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (-41%) keeps its grip on top spot for a 3rd consecutive week after launch, a feat predecessor ‘Black Ops’ couldn’t manage last year (denied by Gran Turismo 5).

‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ clings to second place despite a 61% drop in sales, while ‘Saint’s Row: The Third’, up from No4 to No3 (-40%) swaps places with ‘Skyrim’ (-43%) even though both titles are down by similar amounts.

‘FIFA 11’ (+22%) and ‘Just Dance 3’ (+22%) are the only Top 10 titles to increase sales this week with EA’s Christmas football favourite a non-mover at No5 and Ubisoft’s popular dancing sequel up 2 places to No8.

The new releases are coming thick and fast, but nothing on the scale of last week’s ‘Assassin’s Creed: Revelations’ with ‘WWE 12’ the highest new entry at No6 (22% up on THQ’s 2011 title), one place ahead of another chart debutant - Nintendo’s ‘Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call’ new at No7.

The Top 10 is rounded off by ‘Battlefield 3’ (-4%) down one place to No9 and ‘Super Mario 3D Land’ (-12%), also down one place, to No10.

‘Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo’ (+85%) jumps from No18 to No12, boosted by a big ‘Black Friday’ promotion, while ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (+82%) also shoots up the charts, climbing from No20 to No14 with the help of the new blue Wii hardware bundle.

The only other new release to make the Top 40 is Warner’s ‘Lord of the Rings: War in the North’ at No38.

LOL, Kinect Sports is about to jump ahead of the sequel in a week or two if current trend holds up.

Edit- Eurogamer
Rayman arrived 23rd in the full price Wii-specific listing, above fellow freshman Kirby's Adventure Wii, left to suck up a meagre 25th place Wii-specific finish.

Is not that bad for Zelda, considering also that's the combined chart.
Of the 18 games on top of it, only 2 (Layton and Mario are on a single platform); and the rest not only has been great sellers all this years; are also available in multiple ones. Heck, even Halo Anniversary is even lower and that one was right on top of Zelda on the individual ones; but that's also a single platform release vs. multis.

Fifa and Just Dance increased sales while the others mentioned went down. So, for all we know Zelda could've sold 50k last week and 40k this week; be lower but still not that big of a "fall" (at least until some numbers are speculated/out).

Plus as far as I remember, Zelda haven't been as big seller as other Nintendo games. Though, maybe the expectations of "Wii sales", some thought it might do even higher numbers.

If anything, the surprise is Rayman Origins not even been in the Top 40 -combined. :/
Glad that Skylanders is holding strong; even when the 3DS versions seems was ignored.

We know the range zelda sold in and it isn't that great. Zelda might not be a massive seller but i was expecting higher than this.

Skyward Sword is getting buried.

Ironic ad.
