Penny Arcade 11/30/2007 Jeff Gerstmann fired from Gamespot, allegedly for K&L review

No one enforces this, but before they offer severance pay, almost all employers require you to sign an agreement to not talk about eh company or its policy for several years. The intention is clean--prevent the loss of company secrets and such--and makes absolute sense in some contexts (think about tech companies and such). In certain circumstances it also doubles as hush money, though.

So besides a few people close to Jeff, we may not get a clear explanation on this for quite a while?

So I guess it depends on how angry Gertsmann is. Shit will hit the fan if all of this is true and he does not sign an agreement.

If true (about the reason why he was fired, never cared for his reviews) I will leave GS, that site can rot in hell if thats the case. I have been a member there for years, this is unacceptable.

This all boils down to my opinion you shouldn't trust any of the review sites. They are all biased by advertisting.

The consumer reports model is what is needed for the video game industry. Where the magazine accepts no advertising or hand-outs from the publishers, and instead go out and buy the games themselves.

From a rational point of view, I just cannot see that kind of scenario. Not because Gamespot is holy or anything, I'm quite sure ads do influence reviews and have for a long time, but simply because they know perfectly well that firing Gerstmann so shortly after the review would really harm their reputation, which is pretty much what they live on.

Obviously it is not what they live on. What they live on is ads and hits.

uh you do realize that if neoGAF actually did ban ALL of Cnet, you can still decide to visit them on your own.

We can't ban these sites from the internet :lol

Oh yeah. Silly me. I jump between from NeoGaf to Gamefaqs so often. Carry on!

Additionally, I used to frequent gamespot more than other sites because I believed they were truly trying ot be unbiased and fair. Now that I know they get fired for that, no more gamespot for me!

Hold on.... was it confirmed that 1upo Yours was already recorded? Ah well if it was. But yeah, at least he still has his band... Midnight Brown (at 1:06 he just starts eating a banana lol. And their lyrics are in... porn magazines?)

Don't worry about what sites are getting banned or not banned right now. I feel bad for getting the discussion derailed onto a topic that is relatively minor compared to the actual firing.

A lot of people are using that as a reactionary response to the egregious mishandling of what happened to Gerstmann. Aside from the people going "Wow what if?" People are calling for that as a way of expressing solidarity against Gamespot and Cnet's handling of this. </captain obvious

I call for a ban of CNET.

and a total boycott of all GAF and internet users...of CNET.

And fellow gamers...NEVER BUY AN EIDOS GAME AGAIN...FUCK EIDOS.

...if this rumor is true (all signs point to yes though)
No Dues Ex 3?

Will drop pants for Sony.
If gamespot gets someone to re-review K&L with a higher score, then they will lose all worth as a video game website. This makes me want to close my free account with gamespot.

Yeah...that was a bit embarrassing.

Edit: Guys, listen for a second. When someone gets fired from a job you're not supposed to discuss it at your place of work(gossip) and whatnot. They're not being "evil" or anything.

I don't know. Some uphold a certain degree of credibility(EGM comes to mind). Still, this whole fiasco is why I prefer either community impressions or my own.

Of course it won't! But that doesn't mean it won't be a good game.

Of course it won't...it'll suck...because 90% of the budget will go to paying GS to give it a 9.5-10

Their reputation has been going downhill for a while now.
And at this point, it's basically worthless.
It's a different level. If it turns out that Gamespot seriously fired a reviewer for a perfectly viable (apparently even spot on) review on the whim of a publisher, then Gamespot's reputation isn't bad, it's completely down the toilet. With sites like PA running it (and I'm sure ever gaming blog woud join in), large parts of their audience would stop believing and visiting them, resulting in lasting damage.

If it's true, then the gaming press really isn't just influenced by publishers, it's also stupid.

Yea, when shit like that happens, you know it is confrimed.

I thought it was pretty obvious when they removed the video review, and then when people found out the php url to it still worked they killed it entirely. Or when Gabe and Tycho say its confirmed etc etc.

Although I completely disagreed with his TP review, Jeff is a very good and well-spoken journalist and this entire debacle disgusts me.

Funny, I don't plan to visit Penny-Arcade or Gamespot in the near future. Gamespot because of this recent development, until proved untrue, and Penny-Arcade because of their Assassin's Creed BS. What they need to realize about the guy on Podcast Beyond is that he stuck up for his review, and anyone that does that garners respect from me. I think PA is taking these bad AC reviews on a personal level(why they would be doing so is beyond me).

It was Jeff Haynes who made the comment on Podcast Beyond and he wasn't the one that reviewed AC. It was Hilary Goldstein that reviewed the game.

sucks that 1up Yours records on thursdays, id love to hear them discuss this tomarrow

I hope they go back and add to the end of it. Of all the things to warrant that, this is one of them.

Like the mods said...we should wait for confirmation. If he is gone, then we talk strategy.

If he is gone, I'm sure he'll be fine. He does a fair amount of work with mainstream media sources. Maybe, with his experience, he'll start his own site.

I'd like to see 1up consider Jeff for the fourth chair....Garnett, you keep telling us it's your podcast...make it fucking happen!

If this is true... holy shit wow. The big faces of GameSpot are gone now, everything's about two steps from going down the shitter... if it really is true.

After Greg Kasavin left, Iron Scimitar left.
