Phantasy Star Portable 2 (NA) Demo Impressions

Ya can only have 1000 items in storage? THAT'S NOT ENOUGH. PS:P had only 300 and I was having to get rid of cool stuff by the end of my quest to collect all 100 titles. I need double that if not more. The hoarder in me hath spoken!

Oh an I love how they throw new enemies at ya. Badira aren't new but the rest in the first mission were. New baddies is something PSU badly needed after the weak amount of new ones the expansion provided. Plus the enemies here seem smarter. A Shark was guarding my attacks! And a couple of 'em had like circles under 'em, I guess they were kings?

Fine, then I propose a protest for every game that has online to need a code to play online.

When ya put it that way it does sound really dumb! Its nothing new and its ramping up instead of going away but yes it is dumb! Can't imagine having to input a code to play SSFIV online its just nonsense!

edit: its even dumber since ya don't need a code to play the demo online! :lol

Can we use our demo character in the final product?

I don't see why not since ya could with the first game.

edit again!: its pretty neat ta think my character started on the PS:P demo then went to PS:P then PS:P2 demo and finally PS:P2!

It took an hour to download for some reason but I finally played the US demo. Same as the JP one except I understand what's going this time. I appreciate the fact that I can be an ass to Emilia. :)

I jumped into a online party but everyone was goofing off in the city instead of loading up a mission. Reminds me of my old PSO days. :lol

Anyway, I'll play more tomorrow.

It says right on the description on the PSN store that the demo data will transfer to the full game.

I played through the first story mission and did one online mission with a full group. The online play is... meh my first go around. It was way too laggy. Maybe it was just me, but I wasn't hitting my "timing combos" with the weapons as well as I was offline. There seems to be a brief input lag and the other players were really just laggy as can be, I never saw my teammates actually move too much - they were mostly just a slide show. Again, maybe that's just my internet connection and not the game's fault. I liked the setup of the online mode a lot. The preset conversations worked extremely well and were easy to use on the fly.

... My biggest problem is the game only about 30 minutes in is, it already feels repetitive. Granted I put 75 hours into the first game, and already just starting this game I've heard the SAME music, fought some of the same enemies, on the SAME locations. They literally recycled the same areas, enemies, and music from the first game. I don't like that. I know that the whole game isn't going to be like that. But I wonder if I'm willing to play this game enough to get through all that stuff. I played the first game SO MUCH - I don't know if I'm really ready for more of the same. With Valkryia Chronicles 2 and Kingdom Hearts around the corner for PSP, I think I may take a pass on this game - only because I played the first one so much.

This game has everything it takes to be a real contender on the system. I think online play is HUGE. If you didn't play the first game this is a NO BRAINER. This is the MMORPG that this system has needed from day one. But for those, like myself, who put 70+ hours into the first game, I don't know if there's enough new content and game play here to really want to dive in. As much as I loved the first game, I'd rather have new game experiences rather than just play, what is essentially the first game with an expansion pack, and an added online play mode.

Finally connected why I couldn't import my PSP character. I have the EU version of that game.
Had to go and cancel my preorder for PSP2, so I can preorder the EU version.

Is there anyway to use communicate via non-preset stuff? Havent downloaded the demo yet, so I cant test it out...but have a hard time figuring out how you would communicate on the PSP without a headset (PSzero has preset messages but let you write using the bottom screen).

The problem is, most of the people dicking around probably didn't do the story missions that explains the new lobby system. I went into online as a level 1 coming from PSP1 and thinking "oh, I go to the planet menu and then start a mission." No, you join a persons lobby/room and then go into the "ship"/teleporter to go to the center thing in the "ship" for your missions. It's weird. Very PSO (IIRC), but definitely not newbie friendly.

In any case, first time I tried online I had the Adam Prime mentioned lag. Second attempt just a few minutes ago: Smooth as butter. Depends on connection and locations, I guess. Still, was fun not having to hook up the PS3 to a wired connection to play Phantasy Star.

Defintely going to get this. I just wish I could import my PSP1 character to the demo to be ready to import to PSP2. DAMN YOU CUSTOM FIRMWARE! >_<

but have a hard time figuring out how you would communicate on the PSP without a headset

You can edit the presets. And I think you can use a chat screen option. It's a bit clunky, but it's better than NOT HAVING IT like PSP1 didn't.

hmm I'm hoping my 1.5mbps connection can handle the online, thats the main reason I'm getting it :(

Your connection will be fine. It's more the wonky Sega servers and netcode than anything.

Dodge rolling into the next block in this game is what jumping through gates is to Mega Man hehe

That happened to me in PS:P! Once I got used to the timing in multi-mode I was all messed up in single player x_x I think its cause the framerate drops big time between single/multi modes.

Awwwww c'mon! I put 2000+ hours into PSU which PS:P was essentially a port of and still put over 100 hours into that! Of course they "recycled" stuff from the other games. Its a SEQUEL. All of the old stuff plus a lot of new! The baddies are smarter/stronger and there are even difference mob spawn for older missions. Go do Plains Overlord in the first game and then in this one. The area and music is the same but there are changes!

Select button brings up the software keyboard if ya press it twice (in the first game it switched ya to first person view for most gun-type weapons).

Have they mentioned yet if that online play redemption code is region locked?

I imported the US version of PSP1 so if that code is locked to PSN accounts of the same region then I'm stuck buying the EU version of PSP2 and subsequently will be unable to bring my old PSP1 character over.

In terms of recycling. PSP2 is essentially the compendium of everything PSU with new stuff in addition. So yes you'll be running into basically the same exact locales and missions. Only story mode and DLC will have unique areas that PSU hasn't seen before. Sakai was aiming for the ultimate PSU experience in terms of having it all in one place.

Hmm, maybe I just need to keep on playing to see more of the game. I think I'll hang in there in the demo.

... also am I just rusty, but can you not upgrade your Photon Arts in the demo or something? I thought that by using them in battle you gained "exp" with that Photon Art. Looking through the Photon Art menu I couldn't find where it told me how much "exp" that I had gained with that Art.

It's like PSO now, when photon arts discs drop from enemies or you buy them in shops they are a certain level. So to get higher level PAs you have to simply find them. Or trade for them. I am hanging onto my duplicates of lower levels for that exact purpose since they don't sell for anything.

Was the visualization of combo timing in the last game? It's been a while and I'm too lazy to pop it in, but the circle constricting around the button is something I don't recall.

Either way, it's more PSP goodness which I love.

Character customization seems more robust. I don't recall being able to make characters this fat in the last game. :D

I had a lot of fun. I played PSO back on Dreamcast and Gamecube days. I had a level 200 HUcast named God who was a skyly if I remember correctly. Maybe it was a Redria. :P

I didn't play much PSU for whatever reason and just couldn't get into it like I had PSO, but that's most likely because I was hooked into FFXI at the time.

Playing this demo though was a blast. I'm going to hit up the online with a buddy who played PSO with me all the time later on. Should be awesome. :D

Oooh. Just realized that I never really got around to downloading this. It seems to fix most of my problems with the first game, which was already leagues better than PSU.

I just tried it out, it was really fun.

I'm so used to the systems from PSU that I struggled with it. It looks like PSU but a lot of things behave quite differently and it throws me off. I would probably enjoy it a lot more if I could read a difference comparison.

A big question for me is: Are humans still worthless? I always used to be so jealous watching my beast Hunter friends transform and go batcrazy while I got nothing to compensate.

Will I be able to use the same character in online and single player? This will be my first PSO game (cept for the demo I played of PSU on 360) so I'm looking forward to it!

I got killed AND drained of my healing items by De Ragan of all things. That thing isn't a pushover no more! As a ranger I shoulda been able to sit back an just fire away from a safe distance but nope all of its charging around and double homing fireballs had me scurrying for my life! In fact all enemies do much more acting than just standing around getting pounded on. Is the scape doll limit really just 1 in the full game? That'd be nuts!

No. It was like PSU/O where you had to see the end of the animation and get into the "rhythm."

Which is still there, but the circle is new and helps newbie players get into the rhythm of perfect attacks.

>>PSU let you play offline characters online<<

360 version didn't. If the PC/PS2 version did, that's weird. PSO DID however, but PSU didn't. PSP2 will let you, as does PS0.

Hmmm, can I take my PSP1 character into this demo?

I think so, its got the import option.

Btw anyone hosting a party? It should be alot easier to get into this than PSP1 and PSzero, especially since you dont really have to organize things via friend codes or ad-hoc party.

Blehhh what's with this black thing under my characters face? I tried making a new Cast female and apparently all of 'em with human type faces are stuck with it. Yuck! Bad customization!

Working on my partner card~trying ta remember what all I had in it on PSU an noticed my id is 60000307. 307? Thats kinda a lame uneventful number! If I restart the demo and go online do I get a new number? Prolly not... oh wells a low number will be pretty good ta show up noobs in the future *cool*

Oh ya an character name is Helena, female cast as always since the PSO days!

Who's doing the official thread for this game? I did a pretty mean AotI one (gonna update it soon, promise!)... but its kinda fun having PS OTs passed around to a different person each time!

De Ragan was pretty tough when I was a lower level. Once I got to like level 10 (Warrior class btw) he dropped pretty quickly.

This is what I don't like about the demo (and might put me off buying the game). I used to use guns a lot in the original, so I'm used to using select to the first person view. So I kept doing that only to have that keyboard thing up.

I guess it probably makes more sense, but at the same time, when you're used to something it's hard to adjust..

I said I'd make the OT for this one but I'm not sure I'll have the time to work on it though.

I'm used to it! I'm always holding the L button in when baddies are closeby so its just a matter of briefly moving your thumb from the stick to press up then back.

Hmmm hmmm if the JP release is anything to go by there will be bi-weekly DLC and quests! Ya gotta stay sharp if you wanna undertake such a task!

I had no idea about being able to choose to equip weapons of other classes via Extend Points, individual bullet elements being gone, and you no longer level PA's (you find level discs like oldschool PSO). I mean, this was already probably my 2nd most anticipated game of the year behind Reach, but God Damn.

I did an OT for this at another forum, but I'm maintaining a much larger Reach OT there as well and I just honestly wouldn't have time to do a PSP2 thread here as well, otherwise I'd volunteer if you weren't able to :/

Anyone ready to party up? Volcynika and I are about to start one (i'm still lvl 3 though).

Dunno if I should password it.

Also people need to get hype (everyone seemed to be interested in PSP1 until they found it didnt support infrastructure).

EDIT: Room name is Teknoman's party

You'll also know its mine via comment.

OMG at the names/comments in the party list!

This must be a taste of what the 360 online demo is/was like :lol

If your party is up an running its not showing up in any searches I'm doing. I guess the party list doesn't list every party there currently is. Using "Teknoman's party" in party name search comes up empty to.

I'll repost it, since we all ran into an error. I guess with the game only having one server, people just pile in.

That onscreen keyboard typing is kinda awkward, but I guess I can make quick messages or something.

Going to repost and then password so I can get used to things again.

Party name: Teknoman
Password: ys

Alil laggy here an there but that was fun an worked pretty well!
No ! or & voice/sound effects on demand ;_;
I need ta keep improving my software keyboard skills!
The title reward for playing in multi-player wasn't the Rappy Suit like in the first game but a brand new and much weirder one... z_z
Sleep!

I loved PS:P (1), I can't wait for this. Funny to see a link to my thread that as made so long ago :)

edit: Makes me want to go back and play PS:P

Played a game with Teknoman on a tough mission for my current exp level 5 and managed to go through all of my health items by the last boss, and was on my toes the whole time so I wouldn't die. (I was also afraid I was going to flick the power switch like I've done before) It's pretty intense because you can't just wale on an enemy but need to dodge and not always get caught up on combos to avoiding getting hit.

The lack of a touch screen on the PSP or keyboard makes it a bit slow to chat. I guess I'll have to set some quick messages in the future.
