Phantom Dust announced [Xbox One]

There are A few cool things about it being a remake:

  • Solid access to all those DLC parts that many might have missed out on before.
  • Should be a full release, so not much worry for F2P / Piecemeal stuff
  • Get to see and get used to the story again.
  • Much less chance of messed-up gameplay.

I'm not so mad at the CG trailer. Let the game develop properly. I'm kinda glad they even thought the game was worth getting a fancy CG trailer made for, y'know? That's pretty respectful for the game and property.

On the style of it... Welcome to HD! I wouldn't have minded a straight conversion, but if a change is what could get it made, and possibly make it more popular, I'm not too worried about it. It's cool to see it with a design that looks fit to stand alongside modern AA titles, rather than like some small "artsy fartsy" low budget thing that people will ridicule. It still looks pretty "Japanese" in tone though, like something Namco would make, so I'm happy for that.

All in all, they're doing with Phantom Dust what I wished for games like Powerstone.. It's getting a chance to show itself to a new audience that might finally get to properly appreciate it.

I missed the first one, but this series always seemed right up my alley. (And this gives me very very faint hope for a Metal Gear Ac!d 3. :P)

I do hope it's either paid or the F2P is handled decently a la Hearthstone.

I never played the original. What kind of game is this?

So many comments like this on Twitter and here. Makes baby Jesus me cry so much.

Best game on X-box 180. Real time Magic the Gathering/card-game style with arena combat elements.

I was a PC only gamer back in OG Xbox days :P now I'm only a console gamer.

Sounds interesting and up my alley. Will definitely keep my eye on it

as per the last page, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPKmJzq06es&list=UUQXR8pItAoKDAJSbphFxbrg this vid explains the basic idea.

"Is it a fighting game like SF4 ?"

No, it isn't. There's not actually any other game out there to compare it to to give you an idea.

It's an action/strategy game where you build a deck of skills that you pick up randomly from spawn points on a map. Also featured an extremely (for the time) high level of environmental destruction that you could use to your benefit.

Imagine Magic:The Gathering, where instead of monsters, cards equate to attacks, and you can combine different cards in your deck to create new abilities.

My personal favorite was a card that that did a single hp short range shot, combined with a modifer card that extended range and fire rate so all together, you got a 105 hp gatling gun that could stun from about a screen's worth of distance.

This is an arena combat game first, but a deck building game a VERY VERY VERY close second.

edit: beaten. but yeah, it's seriously a genius level designed action/arena game that is both fun and smart. when people say high destructibility, they mean 'you could basically blow off entire parts of the level if you had infinite time' - there's lots of ways to destroy the environment (and powers that are based on it, even!) that will hinder your opponent- not only in a manner of removing cover like most other games, but also removing possible escape paths, approach paths, or even blowing out the ground under them and having them fall into a bottomless pit (which was very big on a certain map which was a highway over a bottomless pit)

that's only one 'small' part of the game that i've never seen any other competitive game recreate.

I hope this turns out good. The art style change doesn't really bother me. It still has a kinda anime look and I enjoyed the original because of the gameplay, not because characters had big anime hair.

Must mean there's no MP, right?
I'm going to assume this is like some gamer sarcasm/joke or something. It would make no sense to release Phantom Dust without multiplayer. The only poor element of the original is the single player element that you had to play through in order to unlock cards.

A remake/remaster of one of the best Xbox games to come out. There is literally nothing to be disappointed about. They could have rereleased the original game and given us servers to play on for all I care.

Hope the art style and music are still intact.

Unless you were interested in a new game.

He's apparently involved with all the new IP's or something.

Also trending on Twitter. But a lot of comments are "WTF IS THIS?" makes me really really sad.

Yeah, I'm noticing this as well there is a few great sources that MS should link on their twitter feed to educate what phantom dust was and what it can become in this remake.

I called it after I saw the girl come out of the dust. My heart skipped a beat and I said OMG in a scared but excited tone out loud at work and people were like what happened?? I just knew in my heart it was Phantom Dust and then the name appeared and I just went YEESSSSSSS out loud. everyone at work has a confused look on their face at this point and I have a huge smile and goosebumps!!

+1 xbox one sold all because of this game. I had no interest in any other game except Evolve, Tomb Raider and maybe Project Overdrive. Congrats MS you just sold another Xbox one.

Im a little confused. When he says remaster, does that mean they are just fixing the graphics etc. Or are they making the game from the ground up but with the same exec story?

Imagine magic the gathering + 3rd person shooter but instead of guns you use magic. Thats the best way I can describe it. It really has to be played to be understood. It really was ahead of its time. If they only marketed this game when it came out it would have sold so many more copies.

It's also been said that it's a reimagining so it could be a lot of things.

I'm really worried this game/remake/remaster/ is in development by a western studio.
I never played the original but you don't need to play it to see how much Phantom Dust is a very japanese game. I don't want Magic: The Gathering: The Action Game.

As someone who was enough of a geek to play and enjoy Phantom Dust on the OG Xbox I got to say, the hype people are treating it with in this thread is insane. I'm not sure if there is a more "niche" game than the original Phantom Dust. A lot of people are going to get roped into thinking this is MS' answer to Infamous when it's anything but.

Also, we need to know distribution and pricing structure. Of all the old IPs to bring back this is the one most likely to work within an F2P pricing model.

Stop getting caught up in semantics.

This is the company that said "your story begins in 2014" only to come out a year later and be endlessly pleased that they fooled people into thinking they had announced Halo 5 for 2014. Microsoft thinks semantics matter, so should we.

CCG's are really hot right now, I think PD can find an audience this time around. At least I hope it does, it's a fantastic game.

wut

original looks like a tps of some sort

You don't actually use cards. The combat mechanics is based on card games, with orbs that you can pick up in the game representing different "card" attacks and defense. You find the orbs in the environment, pick them up and assign them to a button, so then you end up having new skills to use, such as shooting beams, melee attacks, block, etc. You can find new cards (orbs) that spawn throughout the environment and replace your existing ones if you wish, and it plays strategically into winning the battles.

oh man i remember loving the animations back in the day

Yup. The overall look and smooth flashy animations was what originally drew me into the game. Had no idea there was a deep combat design when they first unveiled it.
