Phil Spencer: Starfield being 30fps is a "creative choice", not a hardware issue.

Not according to this. It's a creative choice to run 30fps, not a problem with the platform.

This is why this quote is awful.
Yeah, they switched off 60fps to emphasise the cinematic nature of the game. Artistry!

So does this mean PC gamers will get a creatively compromised version?
Yes, we'll be forced to play at 60fps+. It's a disgrace.

Pretty sure what they meant is that they aimed for a graphic fidelity that would allow to operate at 30 fps. Targeting 60fps would have likely meant a downgrade in graphics. Obviously, this will not affect PC.

At least, that was how I interrupted it.

The fact that some people are eating this up while PC gamers will be playing this above 30fps day one will never not be funny.

Does he even think about what he's saying? Does he even care anymore? Honestly it feels like he's now in full experimentation mode to see how much crap he can get away with saying before they get rid of him.

Some of your are really dumb. When he says "creative choice" he doesn't mean that the console is able to play this exact game at 60fps. He's saying that Bethesda decided that some things being rendered or calculated were a necessity on which they didn't want to budge, and that's why it's at 30fps.

So basically Starfield has so many things going on, that the XSX and XSS aren't able to run it at 60fps. If you think that this would be different on PS5, stop kidding yourself.

It seems pretty obvious to me that he's saying "The choice is to either scale the game back or scale the framerate back"

I'm in no way enthusiastic about 30fps btw.

A damn shame not giving more options on console, it's ok to make the most ambitious game i'm all in, but you could give more options to players wishing it.

You guys are insane.

The CREATIVE CHOICE is where you decide to stop making sacrifices. If they want players to see a specific level of quality and 30fps is the only way to do that, that's fine.

People bitch about 30fps too much nowadays. You get used to it; just play the freaking game.

A game that feels responsive and nice to play doesn't need to run at 60. Destiny was for a long time seeing as one of the best shooters ever and they ran at 30fps.

That was a 4 hour podcast. I can promise you that everyone no matter how smart will say something dumb every 30 minutes.

He needs to stop talking and just go make video games. Plague's tale proves that 60 fps is possible on consoles if you are willing to downgrade graphics. Give players that option because you are definitely giving PC players that option.

This is why single SKU development is so important. If Bethesda was developing this exclusively on the xbox, they wouldve figured out a way to get 60 fps working despite how hard this game hits the CPU. 16 threads running at 3.5 Ghz should have no issues running the game at 60 fps but because game engines are so bad at multi-threading, we end up in scenarios like this where the CPU becomes the bottleneck despite the GPU having enough grunt to run the game at native 4k. the game was in dev for what? 8 years? shouldve begun working on multithreading way back in 2015. they were bought by MS in 2020, shouldve immediately shifted their focus back on xbox like Sony had SE do with FF16.

That's what we call CHOICE
if player wants the game on Series X can run the Series S version and get 60 fps
Only need to lower the res

What's next making the game unplayable on low end GPUs because they ruin the creative choice?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
That's not how performance mode work don't try to spin the story
All games with performance mode keep the same vision/story

Britney Spears What GIF

Who said anything about vision or story lol

We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity. We want all that stuff. We don’t want to sacrifice any of it.

This is what Todd said yesterday. It's their deliberate choice.

So, the "creative choice" only works on console?

578db458da36cac06c937ec649808f4c.gif

Obviously?

It's a creative choice taking into consideration the capabilities of the fixed hardware they're working on.

Are you people being purposefully dense? It's really not that hard of a concept to grasp. These consoles don't have unlimited power and you need to make concessions between performance and visual effects. Every decision has an impact.

Sure Jan

If this was a creative choice then why did Phil have such a pained look on his face when asked by Kinda Funny after the Redfall debacle if he could confirm weather Starfield would be 30 or 60 in the Summer? He could have confidently answered 30 then.

If Bethesda could do 60 with some magic tomorrow, Phil would change his tune in a second.

If the intention was to avoid having a mode with massive cut-backs to reach 60, then yes of course it's a creative choice.

So it's not a CPU issue or what?

People keep going back and forth on it.

OR is it that those devs don't know how to optimize well and in the case of Starfield it's that the Creation Engine is pretty shitty.

Meanwhile GTAV ran on the fucking PS3 and 360 (with the frame rate dipping below 30fps very frequently), yet on PS4 with a CPU that wasn't faster (the console being around 9x more powerful) it still only managed 30fps and higher visuals. Along with this is the fact that some games are doing shit with 128 players on huge maps, destruction, and vehicles at dynamic 4k60fps. Even on PS4 BFV was pulling off insane shit at 60fps.

The developer want to give you the experience they want. You can buy it or not. Some of the best games of all time ran at 30fps (or even lower!) on a variety of consoles.

You want to control exactly how you play? Buy a PC.

If it's using RTGI like it was suggested in the video, it's no wonder there's no 60fps mode. If not, then God save us from Todd.

I can’t wait to play the game, but I didn’t buy the Series X to feel like a peasant. This is literally the only game that has made me wish I had an epic PC.

So developer wants to give a different experience to PC players by letting them choose?
