Pikmin side-scroller announced for Nintendo 3DS, coming 2017

People sick and tired of 2d games are afraid to say it out loud for some reason

I'm not sick and tired of 2d games, I love 2d games. I'm sick and tired of the lack of diversity in games genres and new ideas on Nintendo's side lately.

What's his source? The copyright notice at the end of the Japanese direct just mentions Nintendo. Arzest is doing one of the new Mii Plaza games.

I want to know this too.

Based on the rest of his timeline, there's a chance he's just joking and doesn't actually know anything.

Really telling that no one was surprised by the possibility though.

Good old Nintendo threads. Express some negativity* regarding a game and 100 starry-eyed fans** avalanche down on you for having a bad attitude.

*Yes, some folks do get extreme with the hate.
**Yes, there are levelheaded fans. These are not those people.

Bummer. Would have likely been a 3D game if it came to the Wii U. But thanks to that consoles death, we get a 2D Pikmin and an offline Mario Maker for the 3DS.

"Sells like hot trash"

From Wikipedia:
Sales

In Japan, Pikmin 3 was the best selling game during its launch week, selling around 93,000 copies in two days and helping to move 22,200 Wii U systems.[36] In the UK, the game debuted at number 2 in the all-formats chart, behind the retail version of Minecraft for Xbox 360.[37] In the US, the game was the best selling game on its debut week, and according to the NPD Group, it sold 115,000 units in its first month, entering the all-formats chart at number 10.[38][39] According to a later report, the game has sold around 210,000 units in the US as of December 31, 2013.[40]

While not absolutely stellar, it is far from hot trash.
Man, we're putting the standards pretty low for Wii U sales.

The 2D push that Nintendo loves so much just keeps going....

And yet 2D Metroid is never happening

People keep saying this is made by Arzest, but does anyone actually have a source besides one (seemingly random) person tweeting about it?

I'm going to keep an eye on this one. Might be a nice change of pace for Pikmin, although I hope it's not a replacement for Pikmin 4.

Also, I can't wait for Josh from The Bit Block to make a video in which he is wining and bitching about how Nintendo ruined one his favorite franchises. It will be epic.

Edit: Do we know who is developing this?

Yeah uh, that guy who tweeted about Arzest doesn't seem to actually be anyone of note. Is there any actual reason we should be afraid it's an Arzest game?

If it is, then yeah. Sure, panic. I know I will. But looking further, we have no actual confirmation it's by them so I think we may have jumped the gun on the panic attack here.

Im going to enjoy Josh's video about Amiibo Festival just like i did for his fake Star Fox Zero review. But yeah hes gonna go apeshit about this game.

As someone definitively on the "2D always > 3D" train I have been so pleased with the Wii U and 3DS for making games I'm interested in. It's wad to see that there are people here who don't want games to cater to me. I mean, we had like a decade between 1996 and 2006 when we had no 2D games at all, pretty much. Can't you be ok with the pendulum at least returning to the center a bit?

There's already next to nothing on the non-Nintendo platforms that cater to my tastes, can't I at least have Nintendo systems as the refuge for 2D sidescrolling platformers, the very best genre of game and one that non-Nintendo sources have had a drought for for 20 years?

Not to be that guy but snap judgements usually have a way of coming back to bite you in the ass so I am reserving judgement until I see the final product. I will say what was shown does look very good.

I mean it's not Nintendo announced at one point, that they were focusing spin offs like Captain Toad and whatnot?

I don't recall if Nintendo directly announced that, but that's definitely what we've been seeing. The 3DS is old, and most of Nintendo's efforts are going to be directed toward the next thing. All the ports and spin-offs are a way to supplement the fewer and fewer big releases, and this is an example of that. Although a Pikmin side-scroller also has the potential to be pretty neat.

I get Nintendo wants to pump out more ports and secondary games for 3DS with shorter development times...

but put this one back in the oven! It looks like a $3.99 eShop game.

It's got like entire year of development left. It has no name or any sort of time frame for when it's coming out (other than 2017).

It's another outsourced spinoff, adjust expectations accordingly.

I remember when Miyamoto said a few years back "We're going to fill holes in our release schedule with spin-off games" and the usual suspects were like "YEAH. AWESOME. RIGHT INTO MY VEIN". Yet now, lol

I don't mind platforming Pikmin's existence, though the game doesn't look interesting.

Boo at anyone hating. This looked awesome.

I am pretty sure this is the only Pikmin game coming since I don't see two being worked on at the same time for this series.

Looked awesome. I wouldn't think - 2D platformer would work for Pikmin but it seems to be pulled off with flying colors. Reminds me of Kirby Mass Attack and I loved that game. Will buy this day one!

Captain Toad is the right way to do it because hes a side character with a gameplay style established in a main series game that was very successful.

I think the main issue with that line of reasoning is that unfortunately most developers aren't as talented as EAD Tokyo.
