Pinball Hall of Fame - The Williams Collection for PS3 and Xbox360

After playing Gorgar on PS3 I can see the "ghosting" effect from the menu screen is also present during gameplay. I think it's supposed to be motion blur, but I didn't notice anything like that in the 360 version. I'm trying out the Williams Challenge since I need to set new scores on each machine anyway. :)

I have them both hooked up via HDMI on a 42inch 1080p Panny Plasma. I have never noticed ghosting, but the color seems darker on the PS3 version, but the image is slightly sharper. I like the overall look of the 360 version slightly better. Also, the leaderboards take forever to update on the PSN.

Gamasutra.
Heartbreak ... 250K first ball in Gorgar. Then 330K additional points in third ball of Gorgar. Yep, gonna beat my high score ... 4K points final ball, right down the drain. :(

I finally got around to doing the Williams Challenge, on PS3 first. I got a personal best Space Shuttle score out of it. Now let's see if Jive Time is as bad as I hear.

Mother fucker. My Jive Time score didn't save. Is anyone else having scores not count on PS3? I got 224,400. That would have put me at #14 on PSN.

Edit: OK, now it's there? I guess the leaderboards take longer to process new scores on PSN.

With that, here's the new Jive Time list.

Funny, I'm also playing this on a 42 inch 1080p panny plasma. The PS3 is the only one actually running at 1080p though. It might only be while you're nudging, but there's definitely a motion blur effect in the PS3 version.

I posted some observations earlier about how extra balls are awarded in Medieval Madness. I didn't quite have it right according to this rulesheet: http://www.pinball.org/rules/medievalmadness.html

Extra Balls

Extra Balls can be lit by:

Destroying Castles (default 2)
Super Jackpot in Castle Multiball
10 and 40 Hurry-Ups
Merlin's Magic random award
Lit Extra Balls are collected at Merlin's Saucer, and remain lit between balls. Completing Royal Madness will immediately award an Extra Ball.

Default behavior is to allow 4 extra balls per ball in play, but this can be changed. MM allows a limit on the number of extra balls that a player may receive on any "ball" (in other words, only 1 EB allowed on Ball 1, one on Ball 2, and one on Ball 3).

What I do know from playing MM on this collection is that if you keep earning extra balls, eventually you'll stop getting them. For example, after earning several extra balls, I did a Royal Madness where the award for completing it was 15 million instead of another extra ball.

Oh, and if you look at the XBL Taxi leaderboard, the top 2 scores are near 2 billion, while the #3 score is a bit over 100 million. I found a thread on gamefaqs where people speculated those 2 top scores were hacked, since the gamertags hadn't earned any achievements in the game and racking up that kind of score would take something like 24 hours of constant playing. So that would make my Taxi score the #11 legit XBLA score - and that's assuming none of the other top scores turned tilt off. =)

And here are my preferred camera angles:

Medieval Madness: Smart Cam 3
Arabian Nights: Fixed Cam 5
Gorgar: Smart Cam 3
Space Shuttle: Smart Cam 2
No Good Gofers: No idea, haven't found a good one yet
Sorcerer: Smart Cam 1
Funhouse: Smart Cam 2
Whirlwind: Smart Cam 1 or 2

Agreed on these. Don't recall the others. Interesting convergence of opinion, especially given how players play these games quite differently.

Arabian Nights has a lot of playfield elements that can obscure your vision, which is why Fixed 5 ended up being the best. No Good Gofers is even worse in this regard.

Gofers is just a mess to look at really.
The fact that you need to time shots with the upper right flipper makes it even worse. I'll probably practice that shot more with Funhouse and Whirlwind before I give Gofers a more serious shot.

Out of curiosity, What are the top XBL scores for Space Shuttle? I can't check at the moment.

Edit: On PSN only the top 4 are ridiculous (over 100 million). #5 is 61 million.

Yeah, it was probably a 2-3 hour game. I had to stop and take a phone call partway through.

Space Shuttle has by far the most grating sound effects too.
I like Space Shuttle's audio.

Adding a couple new scores. I'm getting a better understanding of Funhouse and Pinbot, but both are still tough machines for their own reasons. Funhouse takes a lot of focus since there's so much to keep track of.

Edit: Since no one has posted any new scores since this post, I'm editing in a couple more scores rather than reposting the whole list.

I've been learning Pinbot the last couple days. This is actually the one table in this collection that I played a fair amount back in the day, but I was never that great at it. I'll share what I've figured out so far.

A strategy I've used on a lot of the older tables is to go for "endless extra balls," where you earn an extra ball for every new ball you launch. If you don't screw up the pattern you can theoretically have a game last forever. For example, in Taxi, after you launch a new ball, advance the multiplier 3 times and then shoot Drac for an extra ball. Anything you do after that on the same ball is essentially "free points," since you'll be able to earn the extra ball again on the next launch.

In Pinbot, the way to do this seems to be to keep feeding the ball through the right inlane and shooting into the top left corner hole (repeat about 4 times) until you light extra ball. I think it's important to collect the extra ball before you drain, because even though it's still there to collect on the next ball, you won't be able to light it again if it was lit when the ball started. I could be wrong about that part. To hit the right inlane, I'll either let a falling ball roll up the raised right flipper and up into the inlane, or shoot the ball up the left ramp and hope it comes down through the right inlane.

Since Pinbot's outlanes are so deadly, ball control is extremely important. If the ball is rolling mostly straight down towards the flippers, I can usually trap it with a little nudging and bring it to a dead stop. From there, you can post pass to the other flipper if needed (very quickly release the flipper button and then press it back down). The table is also fairly bounce-pass friendly. I haven't made a whole lot of use of the center pin on this table yet.

I try to always advance the multiplier to 5X early in the ball by shooting up the left ramp. These shots can also help you get to the right outlane or back to the plunger, and build your solar value, so you may as well max out the multiplier before you start multiball.

Once multiball starts, obviously the first thing to do is relock a ball and collect the solar value. I'm not really sure what the best multiball strategy is after that, though. Right now I just continue getting solar values, but at only 100,000 a pop after the first one, I'm wondering if there's a better strategy. Scores are doubled during multiball, so maybe I should take advantage of that. I think it's time I take a closer look at a Pinbot rule sheet.

Finally, if anyone's having trouble hitting the left drop targets, they're surprisingly easy to hit with a backhand shot from the left flipper.

Edit: I just remembered this game had a NES version! :lol

Is there any reason why there is no Platinum trophy in this game?
are there any more retail games that have no platinum trophy?

Is it the same with the 360-version, less achievement points than other 360 games?

Feel its the best place to ask, how is the PSP Gottlieb collection that is up on PSN for quite cheap? A good conversion? Is it playable with the machine shut?

The 360 version has a full 1000 gamerpoints, and achievements for completing the standard and wizard goals on each table. For some reason they didn't do as good of a job with the trophies on the PS3 version.

Here's the thing ... only PSN-only games typically lack a Platinum. This has to do with price/content, and the exact formula isn't clear to me.

Anyway, this actually makes the game a perfect $15-$20 PSN game. As we know, that hasn't happened, but the game is about as optimal for PSN distribution as any game out already.

No shit. I don't have sales numbers for Zen Pinball to compare, but I'd bet this game would be more popular if it was on PSN and XBLA at a reasonable price. Besides, I'd sure love to be able to play this without having to put a disc in.

wow this is like the fourth time this has come up in this short thread. imo this is way better than zen pinball. zen pinball to me is your typical ubergeneric videogame pinball so much that i'm surprised it's not given away for free with windows. do not like the physics either, way too much action and pingpongy but physics are a personal pref. theme and gameplay though not even close zen has personality-free and boring tables. the one nod i will give to zen is in non-table presentation and menus, which are horrible in williams imo

I've edited my latest scores into the list a few posts up. With these new scores I've taken GAF 1st place in Gorgar, Funhouse, and Whirlwind. Whew! I think I'll be taking a little break from pinball. :lol

Those are some outstanding scores buddy! You should be able to 1K this. Zen Pinball is way off with the physics. This is by far and away the best Pinball simulation out there!

Thanks! I actually got my last standard Whirlwind goal yesterday, and then followed it up with that 238M game where I got all 5 wizard goals. Like so many of the other machines, the trick was figuring out how to load up on extra balls. You can get a ton of them in Whirlwind if you keep getting the Mega Door Bonus.

The other thing that's really helped me get some of my recent scores is learning to post pass. It's very handy on both Funhouse and Whirlwind.

Edit: I think the key to getting even higher Whirlwind scores without it taking all goddamn day (my game lasted about 2 hours) is to get really good at multiball. With the Million Plus system used in Whirlwind and Funhouse, your first "jackpot" shot during multiball is worth 2 million. If you can jackpot a second time in the same multiball, that shot earns you 3 million. It tops out at 10 million per shot, but I've never lasted that long in a multiball. The next time you start multiball that game, you have to build the Million Plus value back up from 2 million again.

If you could get into a rhythm on a long multiball, you'd be getting 10 million every few seconds.

Another note: I read somewhere recently that most Williams tables max out at 5 extra balls in reserve. That's definitely the case with Space Shuttle based on my experience.

I played a little more Medieval Madness this evening. After spending a while with the older tables, MM's quality really shows. Getting high scores on a lot of the tables often involves simple repetitive shots and/or ignoring large portions of the game's features. If you want to rack up points quickly in MM, you really have to make use of almost every feature and mode on the table. So even at high level play, the game is still varied and interesting, and it requires a pretty good amount of strategy to get 4-ball Multiball Madness and advance towards Battle For The Kingdom.

When I play the other tables, the strategy devolves into something a lot simpler.

Arabian Nights: Fuck the "tale" missions, just shoot the lamp a lot and wish for all your jewels.
Whirlwind: Fuck the direction targets, just shoot the 3-toll ramp repeatedly to light lock.
Gorgar:
Fuck the whole table, just shoot the bottom left eject hole a billion times.
Space Shuttle: Advance the multiplier to 7x and grab yourself an easy 5 extra balls. Play forever.

We should start a B-team scoreboard just to help my pained ego. ;)

GameGuyPeter scared me when he started posting scores. That Black Knight score still looks pretty daunting.

Edit: He did mention he has a better Taxi score now. I wonder if he has any others not posted yet.

Edit 2: I did convince one of my XBL friends to pick this up. He'll probably be setting his first scores tonight. He's not a gaffer though.

Zen Pinball > this... ;)

I'm considering trying Zen Pinball, but if the physics are anything like Pinball FX-- which is from the same dev team, IIRC-- I'm going to be disappointed in comparison to this game.

The ball physics here feel a lot more realistic than in Pinball FX, which feels more like playing with a ping-pong ball than a pinball. The acceleration of the ball off of the flippers is overly exaggerated and the action is far too fast to be anything close to real-life. Yes, there are still instances where the ball can jump over a flipper, but these instances are a lot less common in the Williams Collection than they were in the Gottlieb Collection.

In my opinion, the Williams Collection is the best pure pinball simulation that I have ever played.

Just one new score to report.

I had an incredible run on Black Knight today on my PS3 version while playing the Williams Challenge and wound up with 64,677,610. It was one of those games where the ball rarely found the outlanes-- and once when it did, it ricocheted back through and onto the playing field.

The score was good enough for 2nd overall on PSN-- the #1 spot is more than twice my score. I'll take it.

The score, by the way, was good for over 200 points in the Williams Challenge by itself. I only wound up with 517 overall, which was a letdown.

What's this talk about dlc and release on PSN?
Just rumours, whishful thinking or reality?

Would buy it again digitally just to get rid of the use of discs.
