Well I think its just wishful thinking but I really miss those movie licensed tables that he made but of course its gonna be nightmare licensing wise to have them appear.

Whew! I just took the XBL #2 spot on Gorgar, and was only about 2 million shy of #1. :D

Adding a No Good Gofers score. I've figured this game out a bit more, and can recommend Smart Cam 4 as the easiest to see what you're doing.

Also, Gofers is actually a lot of fun once you figure out how to play it. I'll probably be playing this one some more.

With that Gofers score, my GAF high score conquest may have come to an end. I don't know if I'll ever be able to beat Brashnir and GameGuyPeter's incredible scores on Pinbot and Black Knight. I get the feeling Gillian Seed may overtake my Medieval Madness score if he keeps at it. Honestly, I never would have been motivated to achieve some of these scores without this thread and gaffers to compete against. In videogames, one of my favorite things is to play a challenging game and improve my skill a little bit every day. This pinball collection has been one of the most enjoyable cases of that for me, ever. Thanks GAF! :D

I've been mentoring one of my XBL friends on this game recently and would be happy to help anyone improve their scores. If you have questions, ask away, and maybe we can continue GAF's march up the XBL and PSN leaderboards.

For now, I'll share a few tips that come to mind:

- ALWAYS make controlled shots! Don't whack an incoming ball like you're swinging a baseball bat. Try to only make shots when the ball is rolling down the surface of the flipper. You can achieve this by either trapping the ball first or feeding it through the inlane. The only time I make an uncontrolled shot is as a defensive move to prevent a center drain.

- Learn to trap. Trapping is incredibly useful and is key to much longer games and higher scores, as well as a prerequisite for more advanced techniques. Gorgar is a good machine to practice trapping on. When the ball approaches a flipper, just hold the button down until the ball comes to rest at the base of the flipper.

- Bounce pass. This is surprisingly easy and useful on tables like Medieval Madness and Gorgar. When the ball approaches your flipper, don't hit any buttons. It'll bounce off the flipper and onto the other one where you can trap it and make your shot.

- Post pass. Another surprisingly easy technique that works on almost every table. Bring a trapped ball to a complete stop, then very quickly release the flipper button and then hold it back down. The ball makes a gentle hop over to the other flipper. Couldn't be easier!

- Take your time in multiball. Multiball doesn't have a time limit, so there's no need to make risky shots. Trap a ball if you can, then use the other flipper to make Jackpot shots.

- Nudge gently, but frequently. You can usually avoid tilt warnings if you don't push the analog stick all the way to the side, but just give it a subtle tap instead. Several small taps in a row does wonders for ball control and still doesn't set off the tilt sensor. Imagine you're double-tapping to the side to make a fighting game character dash. Or quadruple tapping. I have no idea if this works on real pinball tables, but it gives you godly ball control here.

- Stay away from the inlanes. If a ball is rolling down above a slingshot, I always nudge it towards the center rather than the inlane. This dramatically cuts down on outlane drains.

- Learn the table rules. You should always have a goal in mind, such as lighting jet bumpers or kickback, earning an extra ball, building the jackpot value, or starting multiball. Go all the way through the table's Instructions so you know what shots you should be making at any given time.

And here's the complete, up to date GAF scoreboard.

Same, though I've got the PSP version. I've been waiting for it to hit PSN or XBL before I double dip.

Also, here's my best Taxi score.

Nice score! I have the PSP version as well. I play it at work on lunch quite often.

Nice score indeed! Since we have a screenshot to verify it, I'd be fine with adding this score to the GAF list assuming you left the tilt sensor on. Any objections?

And Gillian Seed, congrats on completing Battle For The Kingdom!

Same thing with Ronabo's Firepower score that didn't get saved online. If he can provide a screenshot I'd be fine adding it to the GAF list.

I'll probably try to set some PSN scores soon. The PS3 version feels weird to me after playing on 360 for so long though. The vibration is a lot less subtle. The controller feels like it's gonna jump out of my hands half the time.

Edit: And now that I have both consoles hooked up via HDMI running at 1080p, I can definitely confirm the PS3 version runs at a lower framerate with motion blur. I'm surprised no one else has noticed this.

I've been looking into TwinGalaxies pinball record keeping and found some interesting stuff. Here are a couple TG forum posts by Walter Day:

Walter Day said:
we are hyper-aware now of the problems in comparing pinball scores from one machine to the next. In our huge database of pinball scores, we focus on scores resulting from major-league contests like PAPA and IFPA, etc.

These scores are scrutinized very closely by the contest referees and the rival players who watch each other like a hawk.

However, take Twilight Zone for instance. These scores are resulting from more than one dozen contests, which means one dozen different TZ machines. And in each contest the games were set on widely-varying settings.

Of interest, a recent major competition in Europe had some of the outlane posts taken out so the balls would drain faster, lowering the scores so each game would be shorter in time. This kind of tactic has been very widespread.

SO, Twin Galaxies has united its efforts with Guinness World Records and we will be running a contest (or two) every year that makes the players all play on the same machine, with the same settings, with the same software version, year-after-year. This will remove, as much as possible, the variances that have plagued pinball scorekeeping in the past.

Walter Day said:
The games at the Pinball Hall of Fame get worked on again and again. Though it probably is impossible to ever keep a game in perfect original condition, Tim Arnold at the Hall of Fame in Las vegas is committed to have all games in top possible working order, with perfectly operating parts and a newly waxed playing surface. He essentially makes them as new as possible for eacah contest.

I'll have to pay the Hall of Fame a visit next time I'm in Vegas.

It seems that TG only accepts pinball scores at sanctioned tournaments, which makes sense since there are so many factors (e.g. tilt sensitivity) that can affect a machine's scoring potential. Here's another TG forum quote:

BC said:
The machines being used for tournaments are usually set to be MUCH more difficult than a standard arcade would have. Not only are they set to tournament settings with no free balls and such, but the outlanes are larger, the tilt on the machine is incredibly sensitive, and the machine is at a steeper angle making the game play faster and harder to make ramp shots. If someone earns a world record on a machine being used for an IFPA tournament, they have earned their score.

I would not be willing to accept most of the games I see in public locations as playing well enough to use in a tournament, even without the additional steps that are taken to make them more difficult.
Sounds neat, and makes perfect sense for tournaments, because otherwise wizards would have games lasting for hours.

Because of all the variables on physical pinball tables, simulations like The Williams Collection can actually be better suited for score competition. Though it's too bad we don't have the option of setting tournament options like no extra balls.

Anyway, I finally found the TG page for The Williams Collection. I have a hard time navigating their site. If you send in a taped score, you have to go to the options screen first to prove you have left the tilt sensor on (hooray!). But I don't see any scores posted yet, probably because it takes a while for scores to be reviewed. Or maybe I just suck at navigating their website and can't find the scores.

http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=23&gi=7186

Edit: I do see one score for the 360 version of Taxi. I'm not gonna click on each table one by one to see if any of the rest have scores recorded yet. If anyone knows a better way to view TG scores I'm all ears.

Has anyone here submitted a TG score before? I may as well send in a Gorgar run.

This may also explain why the scores on the simulation are so much higher ... the tables at tournaments sound like they're truly brutal.

I have scores in TG, but they're from a time before TG took things seriously. Look me up under Pressure Cooker, for example. It says refereed, as I recall, but that score was really scraped from a USENET post I made 15+ years ago. (Not submitted by me, I should say...)

I don't know how! :lol Why is their website so hard to use? In any case, congrats on what sounds like a great score!

I'll have to see what their requirements are for recording an Xbox 360 game. It would be nice if they accept direct-feed video.

See if this link works:
http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=22&pi=5&gi=2577&vi=3839

Anyway, the deal with their site is that they have a main frame width that is narrower than the tables generated by searches.

So search for something, then when the listings come up look for a horizontal (left-right) scroll bar somewhere on the table. Scroll right to find the "magnifying glass with + symbol" icon to expand that listing out.

Yes, their site format is horrible. :(

Haha. No. I'm Matt Matthews. :) Sorry, I forgot we have aliases around here.

Too bad I live nowhere near there. Did anyone here attend?

I played the PS3 version a bit yesterday since I haven't set many high scores on that version yet. I got the PSN #3 score on Gorgar (a little under 4 million). Either the physics are easier on the PS3 version or I'm just getting better, because I'm getting damn good at Gorgar ball/table control. The PS3 flipper glitch is annoying as hell though. I may try playing with a long USB cable instead of wireless and see if the flippers behave better. Also, I turned off vibration for PS3. Vibration isn't handled nearly as well as in the 360 version and was a pretty big distraction.

Just in case anyone hasn't figured this out yet, if you have a choice, get the 360 version! It is much better than the PS3 version.

Update: playing the ps3 version with the dualshock 3 plugged in completely eliminated the flipper glitch. No new scores to report though. All I've played is gorgar and I haven't had a good run in a while.

Looking at the XBL leaderboards, the #1 Pinbot score is 28,065,340, by XBL gamertag ItsHimAgain. That's the score listed for Brashnir on our GAF high score list. ItsHimAgain also has top-10 XBL scores on a bunch of the other tables. Was Brashnir playing on a friend's account when he got that score, or was it posted in error?

Oh man, I'd love to pick up this game. But seriously, $41 for the Xbox 360 version at Amazon? Are they kidding?

May have to go PS3 ($20) this time. The girlfriend and parents will love it!

I went. It was awesome, but not quite as good as years past. There were a few notable omissions like Twilight Zone, Addams Family, and Medieval Madness. Last year they even had Safecracker.

The classic gameroom side was excellent. Played a few rounds of Donkey Kong 2. Brutal game, lol. Here's some video of it.

I don't think I'd seen Donkey Kong 2 before. Interesting.

One of my XBL friends just signed up for a GAF account so he can start posting scores here as well.
In several months whenever they let more juniors in, lol
He's already gotten a Gofers score that would be good enough for #2 on the GAF list.

All the time I've spent on Gorgar has done wonders for my ball control. I've actually learned to keep the ball out of Pinbot's outlanes pretty well. On my 12M Pinbot game, I also, amusingly, managed to get both balls during multiball back onto the plunger. And I was able to launch one of them back into play while keeping the other on the plunger. Fun stuff!

Weird, both versions used to be under $20 on Amazon. The PS3 version's not bad; it's just easy for me to nitpick when I play both of them side by side. Buy.com also used to have the 360 version for $20, but it's sold out now. Maybe the 360 version is in shorter supply.

Psst, it's still totally worth it at $41.

That is a bummer about Medieval Madness, Adams Family, and Twilight Zone. But glad you had fun. :)

I don't have Jive Time unlocked on my new Xbox yet, so I'm doing a Williams Challenge. I already got a monster score on Funhouse, and I'm on Space Shuttle now. Who knows how long that will take...

Elite. I bought it a few days before they announced the Slim. I'm up to Medieval Madness on this Midway Challenge now.

New gamertag? No. I'm just too lazy to transfer the save from my old system.

Finally, done. Williams Challenge score 823, XBL #8. Also got a nice new Funhouse score out of it.

Gamasutra.
Got 155M on Medieval Madness. Best I got for now, and since it doesn't shift the rankings, I'll hold off on reposting the lists.

Were it not for this thread I would have never known this title existed; I am extremely grateful!

As an aside, I remember my interview at Midway and the ever popular, "Why do you want to work here?", with zero hesitation I answered, "Williams, Bally, Mortal Kombat, and Chicago".

This is one of those games that I wanted to play and it just passed me by. I've been looking and it's looking very hard to find a local copy. I think there is oneshop with a used copy near here. I'll check tomorrow. I used to play Black Knight at the 7-11 near my house. I remember the game use to yell "give me your money!" and it would scare any little kid near it.

I found a Gamestop in town selling new, sealed copies (several left) of the 360 version of the game over the weekend. $9, too. I now own it for PS3, PS2, and 360. I've played tons on the PS3 one already, and after playing the 360 version for a couple of hours, I can definitely say that it is the better version. Less loading times are obvious from the start. Machines load up faster when selected, even going up and downstairs is faster. Also, leaderboards.

It's taking longer than I expected to get used to the 360 triggers after being so used to the PS3 triggers.

Maybe you two can team up and try to get a combined score that beats mine!

Holy sh-t. It's almost like real arcade smack talk in here!

Or perhaps all of GAF could band together to beat me at Gorgar! :D
Cold.

Anyway, I just realized what your tag means. I remember being stunned the first time a friend of mine showed me Shadow of the Beast...
