"Pirates" treasure mounts to $1 billion worldwide (Reuters)
Source: Reuters Sat Jul 02, 2011, 4:40 pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) - Disney on Saturday confirmed that its fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, "On Stranger Tides," has grossed more than $1 billion worldwide since its May 20 release.

The film represents the second top-grossing "Pirates" film, and will now set its target on 2006's "Dead Man's Chest," which took in $1.066 billion worldwide.

At $756.1 million going into the weekend, "On Stranger Tides" is the third biggest international ticket seller of all time among all time, beaten only by James Cameron's "Avatar" ($2.02 billion) and "Titanic" ($1.24 billion).

While domestic box office performance for "Pirates 4" has trailed the three previous films in the franchise, the movie's international performance is nothing short of extraordinary.

Here, thanks to Disney's public relations department, are some fun "On Stranger Tides" fast facts (well, fun if you're a Walt Disney Co. shareholder):

* Eighth film in history to reach the $1 billion threshold.

* Third Disney film in less than 18 months to gross $1 billion globally ("Alice in Wonderland" was the other).

* The Walt Disney Studios' fourth title to earn $1 billion.

* No. 3 film of all time at the international box office.

* Crossed the $500 million international threshold in a record-setting 14 days.

* Crossed the $800 million global threshold in only 20 days, the second fastest ever to reach this milestone.

* Set a new industry speed record by crossing the $700 million global threshold in only 16 days.

* Disney's biggest international release ever.

* The biggest "Pirates of the Caribbean" installment in 58 territories.

* Highest-grossing Disney film ever released in China and Russia.

* Nearing $100 million in Japan, where it's been No. 1 for all six weeks of release.

*sigh*

I guess that justifies their direction for this crap film. *sigh*. America's response was large but not overwhelming, but worldwide... damn you Russia, China and Japan! *shakes fist menacingly*

Lol, I would definitely want to see a "Pirates 4"

edit: Concerning the story, I personally have never seen a Pirates of the Caribbean Movie, so I cannot judge.

Hopefully this stops people from using box office numbers in any kind of argument, because it was fucking dogshit-- this coming from someone who liked 2 and 3.

There are movies that actually deserve it, this is not one of them.

Is there a list of all 8?

Damn. And only Return of the King, Dark Knight and Toy Story 3 are great. Titanic is good but definitely one of those 'does not retain classic status in retrospect.'

Here's to another 4! The first was decent blockbuster shlock but I think I nodded off halfway through the sequel. I guess they aren't intended for people with taste, though, it's about making money and nothing else.

Yeah, Alice in Wonderland hitting a billion is a travesty. What a shit movie. Especially the ending.

The others are understandable, at least.

No, Avatar is kinda understandable 'cause that's when 3D movies became "mainstream", and liking it or not, it's still one of the best movies to showcase the tech.

Avatar, while not the best movie, was at least watchable. And it also had a GIGANTIC marketing push world wide and was basically the only movie that really pushed people to see it in 3D (which also helped it achieve a higher gross, thanks to tickets being more expensive).

What a terrible movie. I tried my hardest to avoid it until a friend insisted that I watched it with him. Goddamn, not even a gram or so of pot could make that movie entertaining.

Tim Burton should be locked up.

yeah except for the 3D becoming mainstream part since 3D is bombing everywhere pretty much

Avatar is just schlocky special effects extravaganza with no regard for storytelling or writing. It's a shameful film that demonstrates that sometimes audiences really just want to be hypnotized with special effects, quality of the movie itself be damned.

Which really comes around to point with Pirates doing the same. Sometimes people just want schmaltzy special effects garbage :(

A lot of times people say a director "dials in" a film and I sort of roll my eyes because what does that really mean most of the time? it just means that to the person who thinks that, the director didn't have his heart in it.

But for Alice in Wonderland... Tim Burton dialed it in. He injected some of his prototypical stylistic hot topic flair and then called it a day

It was really bad and then that stupid dance number happened and then the bad was multiplied by 100, then was divided by zero, destroying your soul.

Care to give me some more info about that?

Anyway, when the movie launched the marketing push as already said by AceBandage was ridiculous, so the 3D glasses could smell shit and people would still watch it.

As for Pirates 4, I don't think that special effects are the responsible. That's true for Transformers movies. For Pirates though, Johnny Depp is the solo reason why those movies make buck loads of money. Take him out, franchise dead.

Tron 2 didn't even make the top 50.

Which confuses me because people should be able to recognize shitty movies but again I guess having Johnny Depp in your movies sells regardless of plot...

sarcastic? the lesson here is that johnny depp can help earn you a billion dollars.

..and why is tron legacy being mentioned? another Disney high cost/high risk venture?

A children's film, riding off of the 3D steam left behind by Avatar. Not really surprsing.

Honestly, Alice in Wonderland and the two Ice Age movies are the only ones that I'm genuinely confused by because I don't remember them being that big of a deal.

edit: Didn't see 2012 initially. Yeah that's a weird one.

All of them had two things going for them.

1. Part of an established series. (The two Ice Age movies in that list are the sequels to the original).
2. Huge kid appeal.

pirates movies must be huge overseas because i thought it was something of a disappointment here in the states, and wasn't the movie critically panned. most ppl i know who seen it said it was awful.

It was a disappointment here but it became the biggest one in overseas gross. I think it does so well because of Depp and because it's very 'un-American' for a Hollywood film. The films have more of an obvious worldwide tilt.

I can see the Appeal in something like Avatar (cliche, but proven story, 3D hype, etc). But Alice? Crap all around.
