PS3 slim was matte too. In slim version matte case is way of cutting production cost. Pro on the other side was targeted on enthusiast market and that's one of groups which don't like piano black finish on devices. Look for gaming peripherals. Gloss finish is rare on them outside of some small details.
And for aluminum it's not even how it looks, but properties of it which make it not great material for external parts of any device. Aluminium is soft and have relativelly low yield strength (around 16-20MPa, for comparison glass fiber filled nylon can have it as high as 240Mpa). Which means it scratch and bend easily. It also conduct electricity which gives you problems like antenagate of iPhone 4 or other. Asus has notebook which you could feel with your fingers when it was connected to power supply. It literally was shocking users on touch. It also needs to be machined instead of just cast like any type of plastic. Machining is not only expensive but also really not eco-friendly. You need way more material which then need to be recycled which require transport to correct facility and then remelting which takes lots of energy. And all that is even before anodization which is really nasty process.

Very informative post. Are you generally inquisitive and subsequently knowledgeable about many things or do you profess in materials science?

I disagree respectfully. All consoles are made from cheap plastic. ALL of them.

why, cause its cheap.
The mental gymnastics deployed to try to justify not liking the design, are humorous. Like you said, all consoles are plastic, because plastic is cheap. I've never really heard of expensive plastic either, although I'm sure someone will post a link to some space-aged polymer that has a wide heat range, but a simple console housing doesn't need to be metal, or anything fancy.

I think the design looks good. I don't care much, anyway. I've owned a Gamecube, and that had to be one of the sillier console designs, with the stupid handle on the back. The Atari 2600 was arguably the ugliest piece of electronics ever made. I don't think aesthetics matter with a console that you'll stop paying attention to after the first day. With my PS4, I wouldn't even look at it. I would just wait for the beep to confirm that it was on, and that was it. The only time I had to look at the console was when I had to plug my controller in to charge, and then I stopped even that once I bought a charging dock.

My concerns with the PS5 design are all practical. Will the vents prevent baby geckos from getting inside and mucking things up? Will the airflow be better horizontal or vertical? That's all I need to know, and I'm still buying it, even if I never get answers to those questions.

To some degree both. I have master's degree in Automatic Control and Robotics so basic material science was part of my curriculum.

Digital one looks better but still paper bag ugly. Also who take high res pics but doesn't remove the protective film....

Those small touches define quality and care. What a cheap prices tag $500 is for that beauty!

Agree, they could have easily just made it plain jane and call it a day and just found out that those textures are consistent with the controller and peripherals too :messenger_beermugs:

Masterpiece Design. All will follow in the future. PS will make a killing on faceplates. And the great thing is anybody can design their own faceplate and customize their PS5's.....This will do so much for PS5 in enlargening it's demographics......You will see all types of cool designs in the next 7 years....People just love when they have their own touch in a product they buy, it becomes more personal and it's a huge selling point......

It has 4 usb ports
How did you come to seeing one usb port

Where do you see 4 USB ports?

I'm looking at the vertical Ps5, and the very bottom are the on button, and the eject button.

Above it are two slots, one clearly a USB port, and the other is a smaller port (that doesn't look like a usb port?).

I feel like I'm just missing something?

It's called usb-c.

Such a gorgeous looking console. Very futuristic.

Glad they designed something completely different than the usual typical rectangular black console.

I don't like Microsoft and will probably never own a Microsoft console, in case anyone wants to call me a shill. I hate the Ps5's design. It's an amorphous, molten, inverted oreo.

Yeah I'd rather have the XsX"s design over ps5. I'll probably never buy another xbox though.

Looks the same early 2000 fugly just in high res.

In the end it really doesn't matter what the box looks like, just games and make sure it's silent.

It's called usb-c.

Yeah, okay, but where does this 4 usb ports coming from?

Theres the usb port, and the usb c port.

But the ps5 uses Usb c cables (right?) And theres only one port. Right?

So how many controllers charge at a time?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills and just not understanding, and you're just giving me this short answers which is just making me feel like I'm just blind 😂

That is some foil right? I mean on the inside. It sure has to be foil, Sony can be this stupid. Even if it's foil and below that is matte plastic, it seriously look horendous, like some new age post-modern "masterpiece".

Yes. Confirmed that Sony didn't want anyone to remove the clear tape that's covering the middle(black part" of the console. Looks like hell though with all the crap stuck on it.

I'm not seeing any protective tape on the black part. It's usually very obvious.

This is going to be the dress thing again, isn't it.

Fucking Tom Warren... Now there's a man you can trust for impartial reportage! LOL

Multiple users will be using it, given the current situation, kinda makes sense
Also just because it has a protective film doesn't mean it's not gloss underneath, after all why would it need a protective tape..

PS5 has 4 USB Ports: 2 on the front, 2 on the back

The 2 on the back are USB-A 3.2 10gbps

On the front: 1 USB-C 3.2 10gbps, 1 USB-A 2.0 480mbps

The controller charging cable will be USB-C to USB-A

I really like the design. The chonkiness of it put me off from liking it for a while but it's designed that way for a reason apart from aesthetics. If the console can get more airflow, which is needed when you put in better components, just like a PC, then I'm all for it.
