So far:
-You rent 12 PSN games,24 minis , and 12 PS1 classics, for a year subscription.
-Premium avatars and dynamic themes each month * You keep these*
-Access to selected demos and beta trails
-Full Game Trials
-Automatic Downloads
-Qore subscription
-Discounts on PS store content*you keep whatever you buy of course*

Could be better but not a bad start.

seems trials are for 2 games per month... they should change it so if you purchase the game, you have additional game to trial.

that's not bad.

will check out the games they r offering first

When did it become a "Premium, costs-money" service to let gamers try a game before buying? Not talking about rentals, but what are essentially glorified demos.

Wouldn't giving everyone the ability to play any game for an hour, unlock trophies, and decide if they want to buy it be more beneficial? Demos are there to give people a feel for a game and generate hype for the retail release. How many people would try game X for an hour, decide to pull the trigger and love clicking a button to have it ready on your hard drive? Now you have to pay $50 for the privilege of clicking the "Buy" button. Seems so counter-intuitive to me.

How is restricting access to something like this adding value to anything?

Kinda glad they didnt add cross game chat in psn+.. More of a chance that when they get that together it'll be free for everyone.. I just hope they aren't holding out on it as an added perk if no one jumps on this down the line.

That's all conjecture, but it seems plausible. I've never actually bothered with the video store; what happens to the stuff you rent when it expires? Does it get deleted or just become inaccessible?

Rentals are only valid 24 hours after you first play them. So you get a popup warning you about this and when they're expired when you hover over the video you'll get expired in the description.

You would have to have developers get in on this unless you mean first party only games would only do this. Would developers want to do this as well? Seems like it would be pulling more resources away from the game itself and focusing on a demo.

Also, people like physical media -at least game wise.

It happened about the same time that peer-to-peer online multiplayer, avatars, background images and themes stopped being free marketing materials. Its the madness of our current generation.

Heck if I know guys. It's Sony. Cross game voice chat was supposed to be mentioned, but it was oddly omitted. Perhaps it's not part of the PlayStation Plus anymore? I was told what AndyD assumed in the other thread.

Good because that was the only acceptable way for them to split the userbase to me.

But now it seems it was pulled from the PSN+ features and maybe it will be free. Crossing my fingers. And add cloud storage Sony!

I think the membership price level with the free games sounds good. The only unfortunate thing is that many of the games they will likely offer will be older at first, so I will already own them. For example I already own July's Wipeout HD and the free bonus LBP. So for some of us who are heavy PSN buyers already, initially the value may not be too high. That said, if the discounts are good even for us heavy buyers it may even up quickly. And even so freebies will pile up quickly.

Also Qore is included right?

And I wonder if its shareable like everything else. With 2 PS3s in the house now, it better be.

And my guess is other features we want will be added to PSN+ from now on so we might as well sign up now to get our freebie pile bigger and bigger.

what does this mean exactly?

what does this mean exactly?

The PS3 wakes up at night (or whenever you want it to) and auto downloads patches for your installed games, firmware updates and downloads demos so its ready when you wake up or get home from work.

Brilliant idea really.

Demo push is something I suggested on the Share Blog.

More publicity/exposure for their game, what's not to like?

But that's the thing! In this case you're just playing the final retail game, but with a time limit. Zero additional resources required.

As for gamers wanting physical media, obviously a lot of people might try the game and then run to a shop and grab it. But if you can click a button to continue playing, right there on your couch, and have the title added to your digital library...I'd be tempted. Not if I have to pay to...pay, though. Inane.

So true. It reminds me of the early days when online email services paid advertisers until Hotmail said "That's just backwards, you advertisers should be paying us!" and started a near revolution.

This way they can remove a feature quickly and without your knowledge while you sleep!

How could you file a lawsuit if you didn't even know it happened!

Not sure, one thing I can think is, PS3 have Wake-on-LAN so maybe it will wake PS3 if off and auto download or early access firmware.

Would be funny if Sony didn't already stealth patch ads into Wipeout HD, and have to pull them after suffering a whirlwind of shit for it.

Right. Except firmware would probably download and wait on you to confirm before installing. Which would be fine.

THe whole point is to eliminate the slow process of downloading for most people. Plus the servers wont die when everyone tries to download at once.

I get what you mean now with the time limit concept. My concern, from a publisher's standpoint, if this was type of service is open to everyone on the PSN and not just PSN+ subscribers, will the publisher want to pay for the bandwidth that sony charges for this (that's if I recall correctly about how Sony operates the PSN). With PSN+, Sony might let that income pay for the bandwidth and not have the publisher pay for it (again, an assumption). But like you said, this is the final product **EDIT** (the final product is acting as the demo?) **EDIT** with just a time limit and by letting the consumer get a taste for it right then and there, they might just download it and that would negate bandwidth costs.

Mistwalker said:

They'd get that now for making demos, yet they can't even be bothered to make demos for PSN games. You really think they're going to start doing it for full retail releases without some sort of motivation?

So it's like Sony's version of Gametap?

Oni Jazar said:
Only difference is Gametap had a ton of games. This one just gives you a couple.

Yeah, if they had a large selection of games, then that would be very appealing. I remember the rumor that you would be able to play any game from the entire library of PS1 classics available on PSN. That would have been easily worth the money.

As it stands now, I'm not terribly enthusiastic about this. I'd like to see what kind of content they're offering before I decide whether it's worth investing in. I just hope and pray that they don't whittle away features from the feature set of the free service to give the false appearance of offering "value" to the paid service, like Microsoft has done with demos on Xbox Live.

This isn't the same thing as a "demo" in the traditional sense. It's essentially a one-hour rental of the full game, with all of the modes and options available. Lots of casual games on the Web do something like this already.

Posted yet? Haven't seen this posted anywhere else. Not sure if true or not but...

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/15/cross-game-party-chat-coming-to-ps3-with-strings-attached/

Finally (also: BINGO)! Cross-game chat is coming to the PlayStation Network! After what seems like years of demand, Sony has announced cross-game chat, which allows PSN members to talk to each other, even while playing different games. However, the oft-demanded feature does come with one large caveat: chats can only be initiated by PlayStation Plus members.

PlayStation Plus members will be able to send invites to any member of the PlayStation Network, free or paid. Up to four PSN members can be in a party chat, however at least one participant must be a member of PlayStation Plus. The chat will discontinue if all paying members disconnect.

While some may be disappointed that such a hotly demanded feature is closed behind a pay wall, the service is still technically available to free members. So long as you're popular and have friends that pay for PlayStation Plus, you should be able cross-game chat and keep your free ride, too.

Edit: gah just saw the big thread about it elsewhere. oh well..

Sony: Can you give us fifty bucks?
User: What for?
Sony: We'll ... ... we'll give you some free stuff!!! It will be cool. Now give us $50?
User: Umm .. could you maybe give me some examples?
Sony: NO! But it will totally be worth it. Totally. Give us $50 nao!!!
User: ...

will buy when cloud saves is announced... until then i don't see enough for me to jump on board. cloud saves will definitely put it over the top

still waiting for ANY kind of source on the news. It was supposed to be announced during the conf, and it was pulled, it was also pulled off of all PSN Premium sites (ones that it made it on to)...

Demo content has sucked this year. I see tons of games that don't have uploaded demos.

This... "FULL GAME TRIAL" feature. Every single game? Or... just PSN games?

So apparently EU really is getting the PS3 version of LittleBigPlanet for download when they sign up for a year of this. If the US offers the same deal I think I'm sold for a year. :lol

Kind of a lame way to get around the 'we'll never make you pay for cross-game chat' promise lol

Dude, we get it, you don't like the PSN or PS3, whichever. How many threads do you need to express this in?

lol - what's this, the third thing I've said all fucking day? Get a grip :lol

I'm probably going to bite. I had Qore for a year, and while I liked it, there wasn't enough free stuff to keep me interested for a second subscription. Plus sounds like 'free' stuff is virtually its raison d'etre.

PS - I wish the art sections in Qore would have let you download the images on to the PS3 to use as wall paper (for those of us who don't have the time/interest to search for them online). Some of the concept art for games like Assassin's Creed 2, Infamous, Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 was awesome.

I don't like this automatic downloads business at all. Every other month Steam eats a huge chunk out of my pathetic Australian monthly bandwidth quota without notifying me, I don't need my PS3 doing the same.

Chrange said:

Nah bro, forget it, I'm not gonna bring up examples or anything, I've just seen you shit talkin the PSN a few times, thats all. Not trying to start anything by my comment, just a statement.

I think everyone is in agreement that XGChat shouldn't be for pay, but if thats how it is, thats how it is. Whats more perplexing is why it was pulled, did they find a bug or is it going to be free now?

US is getting a 3 month extension if you get a 1 year subsription. So you'll get 15 months for the price of 12.

same here, getting it. BTW some episodes of Qore have actually let you do that, with assasins creeds 2 being one of them.

I think three months is a better incentive, considering you can pick up the GOTY LBP for 30 bucks or even less used. It also seems like most anyone that would have cared about PSN+ would already have owned a copy of LBP or at least played it by now.

Shit, if I'm 'down' on PSN you ever think it's because it could be a hell of a lot better? I mean the common complaints are the same thing echoed by MANY MANY people - slow update speeds, lack of features the competition has, stuff like that.

I didn't say you weren't right! I just said you always seem down on it. It can be a hell of a lot better, and they could have done A LOT of cool shit with PSN+ but they pretty much pissed the potential away, not to mention be super vague about the benefits. There are a lot of things that need improvement, hopefully if they make enough money off of + accounts they can put some of it into developement of the PSN, which honestly is likely.

I really don't see what the big deal is, i'm ok paying for it plus my friends will benefit from it too(when i invite them to my chat channel) , SONY will have my monies. :D
