Playstation Store 03/26/09

My impressions of the NES game were something like this, as I recall.

Okay, I jumped, and now I'm dead. I guess I can't jump from too high. Okay, I'm much closer to the level I'm jumping on, and nope, dead again. *turn off*

Of course, that bit describes Donkey Kong too, so maybe I didn't give it a chance.

Well, you in luck, because Spelunker HD is exactly like that.

Are you just assuming they wouldn't or was there some report that they won't let Irem being it over?

I'm assuming they won't because it's a Japanese game and SCEA have lost their nerve.
Unless they're 100% positive a game will sell well, they won't bother.

The cost of both Spelunker HD and Gomibako doesn't help either.
Me aside, how many American's are going to pay 15$ for some quirky Japanese game?
The American's would rather have garbage like Jeopardy,Wheel of Fortune and more music tracks for Guitar Hero.

So this is the last Thursday of March, should we expect the Killzone 2 interactive commercial or should we expect a blog post of the delay?

While they aren't $15 (they're $10), the Pixeljunk series are about as quirky as it gets.

I don't know about Spelunker being released here, but i'd honestly be surprised if they don't release Gomibako in the US.

Word from the (EU) Official PlayStation Forums...
We have unfortunately had to remove Silent Hill from the PlayStation Store due to unforeseen circumstances. If you have already purchased the game, you will not be affected by this. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and will update you as soon as we have more information.

Doesn't sound bug-related, or they'd offer people refunds like last time with Crash Bandicoot 2.

Anyway I'm pretty sure Gomibako will arrive in North America as Trash Box (HK English title for the game, if your console is set to Chinese, title is in Chinese instead, well in the trophy comparison I saw it as anyway) mainly because the trophies are localized on my Canada account, and that only happens if the PSN game is localized for North America (case in point Echochrome, my trophies come up as Echochrome rather than Mugenkairou which is the version I have), if it wasn't, it would have appeared as Gomibako straight up on my trophy info.

And before anyone wants to add anything else to this, I also have Minnya no Putter Golf (also the Japanese version), and it comes up as Minnya no Putter Golf and not as Everybody's Putter Golf with TORO.

I really think you, me, buffis, and the people we share with are the only people who have this game.

I still haven't gotten it, I gave up. It's tough as nails.

Btw, new Japanese/Hong Kong buys.

Arcade Hits Sonic Wings

Haven't played yet, but I'm assuming it works the same as Arcade Hits Shienryu. Even if it were extensively Japanese (which it's not), it's a traditional shooter. You'll have no problems.

Monster Farm Jump

Yes, I bought this game. At $6, I have to say I'm enjoying it. It's basically a game that uses the spring mechanic exclusively and allows you to score points and combos for variety, along with bomb and other penalty squares. Obviously you're going to want to avoid the cracks. English story and Japanese menus, but there's no trouble here with understanding anything.

Settlers of Catan (English version)

Game Republic's version of the classic board game, all English so you'll have no problem understanding the rules. Game lacks trophies, but has online multiplayer. This is not the same game as the XBLA version, or so I read.

Is it only the basic game without any of the expansions?
No Seafarers or Knigths?

Any ships or smaller islands available?

I have to assume this game works differently than the XBLA version, because when you start, you're immediately thrown into a game with three characters bearing the name of historical figures, like Christopher Columbus and others.

There doesn't seem to be a tutorial mode (just a "how to play" diagram) so I'm doubting it includes expansions, though I could be wrong.

I'll check again tomorrow.

so has anyone been crazy enough to snag spelunker?

I have. Some *very* early impressions (from someone who likes the 8-bit one despite or perhaps because of its cheapness of deaths):

Well, the hero must've getting some more calcium in his diet, as he can live through a little bit further of a fall (as opposed to like 2 feet before).

The remixed music is very well done.

The arranged (new) graphics are a bit of a mixed bag. The character design is very generic. The graphics at first glance are nice, but things like the pitfall traps are harder to see than with the classic graphics.

'Classic' graphics somehow still come off as new graphics that are wanting to look old, kinda 'fake 8 bit'. Not sure exactly why I think that, just how they look to me.

There's a bit better variety in tricks (traps/enemies/etc) even from very early in the game. Already saw snakes as a simple enemy to jump over (the original just having the bats and ghosts for enemies). For traps, there's the Indiana-Jones style giant boulder to run from, and a platform on a rope that sort of swings when you jump on it.

It still appears to have a decent amount of challenge despite there being less falls from small heights and less slipping-off-the-ropes death (and that's without even using 'rope assist', which is for those with problems with the rope). Its nowhere near as tough as the original, but its of course got a ton more levels instead of the original's 'lots of increasing difficulty 'laps' of the same 4 areas'.

So, more forgiving than the original but still challenging. Apparently tons of levels, but I only played the very beginning so far.

Unfortunately, I probably won't have a chance to play multiplayer probably until next week.

And to close, a link to the Hatsune Miku parody of the original Famicom Spelunker:
Miklunker video (in Japanese)

Front Mission 3 in Japan :(

I want to buy this game again, but the US version this time.
The PAL version is just HORRIBLE.

I barely played the game back then and lend it to a friend.
He told me it was awesome, but I couldn't get into the game anymore :/

ESRB Watch:

Fritz Chess

Platform: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3

Rating: Everyone

Content descriptors: Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes

Rating summary: This is a chess simulation game with varying levels of difficulty, practice options, and single player or multiplayer modes. There is also an "Adventure Chess" story mode in which players compete against various regal characters (e.g., a knight, a jester, and a queen). The queen character is depicted wearing a dress that exposes her cleavage, and in one animation she thrusts her chest toward the screen. Expletives appear in some of the dialogue (e.g., "You scared the hell out of me" and "scumbag").

Sonic Wings Special (aka Arcade Hits Sonic Wings) isn't very good imo. I like Sonic Wings 2 quite a lot, and 3 is decent, but 2 and 3 is a pretty weird mashup of the sonic wings games that just doesn't feel right. I purchased it of the JP-PSN quite some time ago and I can't really recommend it.

No way at that price.

A downloadable COD? :o Although it could just be a port of the very first one.
This. The ESRB rating lists games in chronological order. When a new version gets released, they update the old entry with new platforms.

The COD entry was at the back of the PS3 search...

The original Call of Duty is the only mainline COD not to come to consoles. Xbox and PS2 got the side stories like Big Red One. All PSN would be missing is COD2, while the Xbox has them all.

Hopefully they'll add the maps from COD2, either bundled in the game or as DLC - I personally still prefer the classic COD multiplayer over the post-COD4 multiplayer, so to me COD1 with the addition of the maps from COD2 would be a far more exciting prospect than Modern Warfare 2.
