Playtonic unveils Yooka-Laylee (Banjo Kazooie successor) [Kickstarter LIVE - Funded]

No disrespect to Grant, who is a great composer, but I'm just not feeling the music here. It's fine, but feels like background audio that doesn't really add much.

For my money, David Wise is still the king of atmospheric platformer music. The stuff he did for Tropical Freeze and even Snake Pass is just unbelievable and really pulls you in. The goofy tone of Yooka-Laylee may not have been a perfect fit for it, I suppose, but that style of music would have added a lot to the exploration of the stages.

His few tracks in the game are very good but they aren't used very often. :\

I do like how each composer has staked out a particular sound world. Burke is very retro electronic, Wise is his usual eclectic self and Kirkhope is doing his orchestral thing.

That said, they released this soundtrack without the orchestra, which I continue to find baffling. Kirkhope's pieces in particular sound very synthy, which hurts when he's going for a more epic sound.

I'm about 4 hours into it and I'm really enjoying it so far. Given, it does feel like the game is stuck in 1997 in terms of game design, but honestly I feel like that's what was pitched to us and that's exactly what we got.

So far my gripes are that the game has some bugs (I get stuck on geometry a lot), some elements like Rextro's arcade games are the opposite of fun, and the level design isn't the tightest since they're so expansive and easy to get confused and lost in. However, the overall gameplay is fun, the platforming controls are solid and MAN do I miss playing games like this. If you've been waiting for a tried and true Banjo Kazooie sequel, this will definitely fit the bill in my opinion.

I'm reviewing the game on PC for our podcast/website and I still have a lot to play so things could change, but at the moment I'm pretty happy with it.

I just got e-mailed a code for the full version on XB1. Does this just let me download it so it's ready to play on it's release date, or can I actually play it now?

I've got my Xbone code but seeing footage of that horrid casino level put me off playing the game. I don't think I'll ever play it now to be honest.

No PS4 codes yet?

My recent email says PS4 codes won't go out until Monday.

Edit:
Digital Game Rewards for Steam, GOG and Xbox One will be sent out this week so that backers on those platforms can pre-load the game in time for release day. PS4 codes will be dispatched and immediately playable on Monday, April 10 in time for Yooka-Laylee’s first worldwide release in Australia and New Zealand.

Just got my backer steam key!

Same here. :D

Should be done with Mass Effect Andromeda right before this comes out, just like I was hoping I would.

It's been a crazy busy beginning of the year in terms of game releases! I haven't even had time to pick up Horizon and Last Guardian because of Zelda, ME:A, and now Yooka Laylee coming out so close together.

No physical copy waiting for me at home :( that email they sent out on Wednesday has built my hopes up of getting it yesterday or today and ruined them in a swift moment.

Well, just preordered on humble store. The reviews are worrying but I am just a huge banjo fan that I am willing to give them this blind doubt. Crossing my fingers here.

Oh hey there.

Funny thing is that it's not even a backer copy, I backed for PC. So much for early birds!

Got my steam key, but can't preload yet? Bummer, though if on Sunday it's already up for preloading it's not a big deal

Can't help it if mom n pops break strert date (which I assume this is?)

Media Markt, actually, which is weird. I guess they may have had some crossed wires in the database due to the fairly unusual Tuesday release for this kind of game.

So what's GAF's impressions of this so far? It's been getting some negative press, many reviews claiming this game to be overly reliant on nostalgia and not very innovative, but to me that's not exactly a bad thing. Some say the former is a problem in addition to dodgy mechanics, level design, and performance issues. However, after playing Breath of the Wild for hours, at the very least the lattermost issue would not be a problem :p

So what's the deal!? I want this, but I'm not chucking $40 at it if it's merely 'okay.'

I don't think many of us have the game yet to start giving out impressions I'm afraid.

Having played through the tutorial and a bunch of the first world... yeah, this is Banjo alright :p. The first world is definitely more Tooie with a touch of N&B than Kazooie for what it's worth, but YL's increased speed both walking and rolling reduces the downtime between landmarks quite a bit. As for performance, it's actually good? The PS4 version at least seems to run at a solid 30fps for the most part and it feels very similar to the XBLA ports in that sense, but of course it's still the first world and maybe the problems come later.

So far it's pretty much what I expected and wanted, so I'm happy. Hopefully the rest of the game keeps it up.

In which way do you see N&B in there? I hope we are not required to Lego, right :/?

Are you playing the updated version with the patch installed?

Nope, haha. It's mostly the combination of the visual style and the size of the characters and enemies versus the size of the world, plus the fact that the first one at least is a bit more sandbox-y than most of either N64 game's locales. The writing also seems somewhat more similar to N&B, with a bunch of mocking and referencing genre conventions, which IIRC were mostly limited to Kazooie in the other games. But yeah, nothing as far as gameplay or mechanics go, really.

I think so? Haven't really kept up with the news this week as to what version it should be, but there was a patch the size of the full game when I inserted the disc.

So no Toybox preorder bonus for backers on Xbox ? Guess I will pass on Kickstarter next time :(

Have you tried contacting someone at Playtonic about it? I'm not sure of the Toybox situation on Xbox myself. That said, it's really not a big deal to miss out on it. There really isn't much to it. I went through it when they first put it out for backers in July last year and haven't touched it since.

Thanks for clarifying!

Regarding Toybox: You get Toybox access if you have the physical copy ordered, otherwise you don't, with Kickstarter. But either way you get the free DLC which should be preferrable over Toybox.

Got my GoG key! Sad that I can't play it now though, even though the press obviously got copies to play. Why don't the Kickstarters get it? Maybe I didn't pay enough?

Almost done with the full version of the first world, and so far, so good. I'm actually surprised at the amount of (light) platforming there is. It's no Mario Galaxy for sure, but you jump around quite a bit, especially if you go for the feathers as some of them seem to actually require abusing the level geometry to reach. The new Jinjos have cool designs and the extra step needed to get them when you find them is a neat addition. Pagie objectives seem pretty unique so far too, even though this also means the odd stinker (the mine cart is no DKCR for sure, and the "retro" mini-game is not too hot either). Performance is still solid even though expanding the world adds a fair amount of content, so maybe they should have waited before sending codes, haha.

I'm still early on, so I don't want to jump to conclusions, but yeah, I like it. Not a bad start for nu-Rare, I'd say.

I love when 3D platformers let you do this, I remember Voodoo Vince having a fair bit of it thanks to its strangely shaped buildings and structures.

I'm kinda glad I switched my console choice to the Switch, I really don't have time to play another game with Zelda and Persona 5, and I have yet to get Nier : A + will have Dragon Quest Heroes 2 later @-@
Anyway the game sounds like everything I was expecting it to be when I backed it so I'm glad about the end product, now to wait news about the Switch version!
