Podcast that you liked and now don't like?

Jeff dismisses other people too at times. It's just that Jeff can turn it into something funny (like his KI hate).

Well, yes. That's what I meant. Jeff at least sounds sarcastic no matter what he says. Arthur just sounds angry. I find it very difficult to like him because of that.

All I get from this thread is GAF for some reason endures listening to people they don't like, oddly enough going out of their way to download them on podcasts.

Player 4 podcast I stopped listening to a while ago, other than that, I don't have much else to complain on since I don't actively download podcasts that fall out of my favor. This feels like such a strange thread.

I used to listen to RebelFM like crazy. Love me some Anthony, but Gies got harder and harder to listen to. He kinda ruins it for me. I love A Life Well Wasted, but there hasn't been a new episode in a LOOOONG time. I used to love DGR as well, but once they shifted away from being drunken gamers and focused on other things I lost interest.

Pressing the subscribe button once was a pretty serious chore. I'm kind of proud of myself for accomplishing it, honestly.

Yeah Robert Ashley needs to pull his finger out and give me a new podcast or album immediately. I don't mind which, I'm not a monster.

Podtoid.

The old Podtoid with Anthony Burch, Aaron Lindee, Brad Nicholson, Jim Sterling, and Sports Sarkar was really an amazing show. I don't think Max and Holmes really flow well with each other the banter just isn't on the same level as it used to be. It's interesting because while I really don't like him on Podtoid, I love Max on The Comedy Button, mostly because he has a better reporte with Bromley, Scott, Giagagos and Altano.

And pressing what is usually the same button to unsubscribe once again is an equally serious accomplishment, I'd imagine.

All of them. Over the years I listened to all the major gaming related podcasts I can think of, but I got either bored or annoyed with all of them at some time...or they simply died like GFW radio.

I only sometimes throw in an episode of Weekend confirmed and Bombcast, but as someone who mainly likes japanese games, they are to hard to listen to sometimes.

You should try 8 4 Play.

My big one is PC Gamer podcast. They were always pretty meh but basically the only PC news podcast out there that came out with regularity. I put up with the shitty episodes and Evan for awhile, but then they came out vehemently defending Diablo 3 and everything it was doing and went out of their way to shit on consumers.

"now"?

Four months into RebelFM's life I had to unsubscribe because I found him to be insufferable.

The rest of the cast would be having a decent discussion and then he would barge in and shit all over it.

I have to agree. Gies is really trying as a listener... I can't imagine what Rebel FM is like now if he's somehow gotten harder to deal with.

As for my entry into the thread, I really dug Indoor Kids for about two months. The show got harder and harder to listen to, though, after Kumail and Emily ceased talking about games for more than 10-20% of the show. They'd talk up their personal lives (which aren't that interesting) and Kumail would spend more time promoting his stand-up rather than giving any real material to chew on.

The show got too vain and directionless. I loved the Dan Harmon episode, though.

So he's not allowed to like tattoos? Or do interviews in interesting places. I dunno man, it feels way like people just hate him and want to hate him more. Any excuse. He's an internet games reviewer, super easy to avoid if you don't want to hear him. Hell, I like his podcasts and yet I have zero exposure to this. I just took him as a thoughtful, slightly too-serious dude who likes vidya games. Silly me!

In that specific documentary clip (a doc some of my friends actually worked on) it's hard not to laugh at how self-important Gies tries to come across as. I mean, what does footage of Gies getting a tattoo have to do with journalism or video games? Again, it's weird, laughable vanity. It's fine if you haven't seen these examples of him being obnoxious, but defending those examples by saying "well, I was never exposed to that so he's absolutely fine" is kind of, yes, silly.

If he's a pain in the neck to listen to then people aren't going to keep listening to his podcast, hence the topic of the thread.

Wait, what?!?

Are you saying that the hate thrown towards the Boston Bombers is undeserved?

No. I'm just saying that the hate that Arthur Gies gets on this site makes it seem like he's done something far worse than making stupid and incorrect comments. Based on the harmlessness of his most called out and detested actions, I think the appropriate and mature response is to ignore him and move on instead of letting him evoke the emotions that sane humans reserve for mass murderers. Then again, it's hard to tell whether some people are genuine or not but with others, their post history speaks for itself.

Who knows though. I've felt really detached from GAF for the past year or so because I don't really get upset or bothered with most video game related things to the point of posting hate filled diatribes about them anymore. There are more important things in my life that deserve that kind of time, attention, effort and emotion. I don't like hating things.

Well, you certainly picked a weird thread to jump into, heh.

Playing devil's advocate for a sec, how do we know it wasnt the director's idea with agreement from Gies?

I dunno man, I just don't like a dog pile. I take him at face value and I enjoy his work.

I don't like dog piling either, for sure. I'm just saying though: as a guy who listened to Rebel FM for a few months for everyone but Gies that I've come to my own opinions on the guy without the need for GAF's input. He's a real wet blanket and, on a more base level, I grew to have a really low tolerance for his voice.

As for that clip being the director's idea, it wouldn't really change my thoughts on it. Anyone who'd agree to make a documentary on a videogame website and try that hard to look "cool" or what have you is laughable in my eyes. Games are fun and journalists shouldn't be doing something like that on camera to earn credibility.

Well, you certainly picked a weird thread to jump into, heh.

I guess?

I posted my thoughts on the Idle Thumbs Podcast a few pages back already but I do feel there is a difference between actively hating and not liking something. I try to avoid giving mindshare or attention to things I dislike instead of composing a post fueled by "unintentional hyperbole" and a lack of perspective that makes it seem like the US government fucked up real bad by not putting a guy who said a dumb thing on the internet in Guantanamo Bay.

"now"?

The rest of the cast would be having a decent discussion and then he would barge in and shit all over it.

I mean it's bad now (not that he didn't ruin it already before), I stopped listening over 2 years ago as well.

I listened to Rebel FM since day one but unsubscribed a few months ago. It feel like it was becoming way too preachy on some topics and the video game talk just got boring and stale.

I also stopped listening to This is only a Test. Since Gary Whitta hasn't been appearing as much, I am finding Will Smith insufferable.

Idle Thumbs was in my regular rotation before the revival. Ever since it was brought back I have barely listened, and the few episodes I jump in randomly have not kept me revisiting for months at a time.

Rebel FM never was too bothered by Gies in previous years, but I always ignored him outside of the podcast, thus I was naive to the tweets/articles that give so many reason to dislike. Still I at least appreciated his attempts to derive discussion and conversation from the crew even when I mostly disagreed. Lately he really seems to have become the authoritative voice of the show and there is a real feeling that the rest of the crew chooses to submit and avoid argument than deal with his nonsense rebuttals.

Its a bummer that the fucking cat has become a quick way to avoid argument or curtail a potential discussion in this way. Damn near everytime a counterpoint is given, Arthur or someone interjects with how the cat jumped on their lap or some shit. In the most recent episode Matt was in the middle of a great heated counterpoint to Arthur's opinion on AC4 when he immediately cut him off mid sentence talking about something stupid the cat just did. I wanted to punch Arthur for that shit. Happens all the time, multiple times per episode, awful for a listener.

Giant Bombcast Lack of engagement from most of the crew except for off-topic discussion. I get much of GAF loves that stuff, and it can be entertaining, but yea I'm kinda done.

Podcast Beyond has gotten a lot worse without Ryan Clements around. I also get the feeling that Greg and Colin don't care about it anymore, considering they never go over an hour anymore but their YouTube non-gaming podcast show is usually pushing two hours.
Coincidentally though, the PlayStation Blogcast has become a lot better since Clements joined, so there's that.

Retronauts, has talked about a lot of topics I don't care about since it came back. The show was always hit or miss but it seems to be missing much more than hitting for me this season. I wouldn't be opposed to them covering some topics from before with a different crew. Still, it's good to have them back.

Game Scoop: When I talk about Greg and Colin not caring about Beyond as much anymore, that's nothing compared to how much Daemon Hatfield doesn't care about Game Scoop. The video format just isn't working, it's overwhelmingly disliked, and yet they refuse to do anything about it. It's strange that they just can't pass it off to someone else and let them host a weekly audio podcast.

I dunno man, I just don't like a dog pile. I take him at face value and I enjoy his work.

I don't know how you can take Gies at face value and not still hate him. I mean, look at that face.

This is a goof, don't judge people by their face. No matter how pretentious and shitty it is.

"how do ppl do thing? i dun get"

God....get a clue man

Weekend Confirmed: Garnett Lee's personality is too... forceful for him to be a successful podcast host without another person of equal passion to balance him out. It just felt like a lot of "THIS IS WHAT I THINK!" and everyone else gets left in the dust. It was occasionally good, but I haven't been back to it in a long time.

Comedy Button:
I LOVED Gamespy debriefings because of how hilarious the podcasts would become with Anthony and Ryan trying to talk about games, but the other guys just devolving into off-topic hilarity. Comedy Button became too unfocused for me. There's no really "host" which leads to things becoming a bit of a mess without anyone trying to focus the conversation.

Game Scoop: Stopped listening when Colin became a regular. Couldn't stand that guy (similar to people's problem with Gies).

Mission Log: Not gaming, but a Star Trek podcast where they watch the shows in order and talk about them one episode at a time. It's only 2 guys and the discussions hve gotten kinda dull. I pretty much stopped when they got to the third original series season (not a big fan of most of those episodes). They really need a third guy to mix things up a bit more.

Have to agree about Comedy Button. It has seen better days and those were the Gamespy Debriefings. It's fun listening to it occasionally. But they need to come up with something other than Brap Brap. It's getting old.

I stopped listening to the bombcast way before ryan died. Mostly because gaming went to shit and i havent cared about any games for awhile.

I'm in the same spot as others with Rebel FM. When this thread was made I liked the podcast and even Arthur. But over the years he just got more and more insufferable. I eventually dropped the podcast around the sim city stuff. In many ways I blame the internet - the more shit it slung his way the more bitter and annoying he became. That doesn't mean a lot of wasn't self inflicted, but still. Plus I miss Tyler. Off topic question - anyone remember the name of the browser space shooting game he talked about all the time?

I also dropped This is Only a Test recently. Its obvious they are jaded with (or out right loath) consumer electronics... but that's all they really have to talk about. Norm mentally checks out most podcasts, Will simply doesn't know enough to do a science type show, and Gary is absent more often than not. There just doesn't seem to be a reason to tune in. I'll be back for Octoberkast for sure though

I'm loosing interest in the Comedy Button as well. Its still funny but maybe a little too over the top or feels like its trying too hard. I'm just not sure I want to listen to Brian Altano screaming about sex while on the bus and Anthony's self depreciation starts to wear a little thin after 6 years of listening to him. I know he's playing it up for the mic but it just gets depressing after awhile

That's not true at all, back when they were good they brought insightful commentary and criticism to games people actually knew and cared about. Look at the old episodes and the games they list.

For example, on Episode 24 they talked about:

Rhythm Heaven,
Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure,
Brütal Legend,
Dragon Age,
Bully,
Tap Tap Revenge,
Shadow of the Colossus.

Look at those games, look at that shit people care about. And when you look at the other old episodes, same menagerie of shit worth talking about. And it was great! Back then, I totally wanted to hear what they had to say about Dragon Age because chances are it was going to be a bit deeper or a little more different than what someone at IGN would say.

Here's the list of games on their latest episode:
Nuclear Throne,
Flywrench,
DayZ

Ugh.

The latest episode sounds like a pretty good episode. I'm going to check it out thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah, it still has it's moments (I was DYING at the Ryan Scott's brother revelation episode), but too often I just wasn't feeling the episodes anymore.

I think it was about when they started upping their monetization stuff and when the one guy left his job to go full time on Comedy Button (which apparently didn't last long, haha). I didn't mind either of those things (hey, if you can make money, go for it), but it was just around then when I started to wind down on the show.

I still LOVE Gamespy debriefings. That stuff was fucking gold!
Felt similarly about the old Three Red Rings podcast on IGN. I think it was Hilary that made the podcast so hilarious. It was meant to be a pro-Xbox podcast, but usually just ended with them shitty on stuff and going off topic. Still remember when they skipped like 40 episodes in order to beat Podcast Beyond to episode 100 or something like that.

I used to love listening to Weekend Confirmed but that whole uproar about Andrea (who I never liked anyway) getting paid to say glowing stuff about games and the rest of the crews shrug reaction really put me off the whole thing. I mostly stick to Idle Thumbs and Bombcast now. I agree Ryan's death has been awful for that show but I admire them for sticking with it and I believe they will get the hosting stuff figured out someday

I was in deep, romantic love with Sterling-era Podtoid. Him, Conrad, and Holmes were magical together. Hell, I even made the Podtoid OT here, though I've sorta let it go.

Once he left Destructoid and Podtoid died and they brought it back as "DIsmal Jesters" it just isn't the same. I was never too, too crazy about the Willem Dafoe stuff but I had my laughs about them. The Gordon Ramsey stuff was all gold. This new Edward James Olmos stuff? I'm just not feeling it.

Further, I think I appreciated Podtoid's gaming content more than I thought I did at the time. Now that it's 95% just plain ol' humor it just seems "less". I find I really liked their gaming discussion now. I miss it being there.

It's a shame. I really appreciate the dudes. I love them for all the joy they've brought me through the years and they've indeed helped me through some very hard times. I just don't think Dismal Jesters is as good yet as Podtoid. I keep listening and hoping they find their sea-legs. I'm going to keep giving them my ears as long as they make content, out of respect, but I just wish they'd cut the Edward James Olmos crap since it feels so forced and add more gaming content.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. The Edward James Olmos bits seem very forced. Maybe the Willem Dafoe ones weren't as natural as I was imagining them to be, as well, but I had only started listening to the show when Jim and occasionally Jonathan were still doing pitches.

It's kind of funny that they don't want to talk about video games and to see Jonathan's attempts to trick Jim and Conrad into talking about them anyway fail utterly, -- but the video game segments gave the show a much better pacing, the show suddenly got a serious tone in the midst of hilarity, serving as a backdrop to the jokes with which they heavily contrasted, making them funnier in consequence.

I haven't listened to Giant Bombcast since Ryan Davis passed :(

He was my favorite person on their staff (I was bored for the most part when he wasn't in a podcast) and I couldn't bring myself to listen to their first podcast after he passed away, and haven't had much interest in catching up now that he is no longer a part of it.

cagcast for obvious reasons.

many others due to people not knowing that snorting snot through your nose on mic is a bad idea. I mean seriously people...

I'm curious, what work of his do you enjoy specifically, any writing you can link to? Or do you just like hearing his opinions on RebelFM?

Yeah only RFM. Never felt any hate towards him. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, but I think he's thoughtful and will occasionally say something interesting. I think maybe it's a personal politics thing, I'm not nearly as progressive as he (wants?) seems to be but I appreciate that he's thinking about the portrayal of women and minorities in games. And at least he has an opinion and a stance, there's so many near identical early 30s white inoffensively nice white californian guys on podcasts, I feel like he has a voice and a standpoint which I can respect.

I'm glad I'm not alone, too! It's like "Hey guys, here's why you know us and, ostensibly, why you give a shit about us. Let's completely disregard all of that and treat talking about it like a chore!".

I got into Podtoid due to their work in games, I STAYED because of the wonderful personalities. I think it's a combination of keeping why people found you and building why they stayed. I don't mean to be too frank, but if people want a strict humor podcast they're going to go with WTF or Comedy Button or something.

Totally forgot I stopped listening to the indoor kids too (probably says something unkind about that show). That show was funny for awhile but it seems like they ran out of material or got busy or something and the show suffered big time

I listened to a few episodes of the PS Blog podcast because Ive always liked Ryan Clements, but after a few episodes I realized he was the only redeeming part of that podcast. Every game they talk about they need to act like it's the greatest game ever made. I guess it's not their fault, since they are working for Sony but it doesn't make a good listening experience.

Very refreshing to find that i'm not alone in my dislike of arthur geis- not proud of revelling in negativity but i'm certainly doing that reading these posts. My God, that man could engineer gender politics into almost any discussion- killed rebelfm for me after years of persevering with that show.

Maybe I'm just easy to please, but the only podcast I've come close to dropping is This is only a Test, for all the reasons mentioned. I've come to the point where I listen to the news/random crap beginning, then stop once they hit the 'expensive crap they've been testing' part. Because, at least with Gary, he'd make fun of some of it.

But, as for the rest, the Bombast is still an entertaining as hell three hours, I don't think Arthur Gies is histories worst monster for having networking skills and having an opinion different from me, so I still enjoy Rebel FM, the IGN podcasts are usually entertaining, even though the IGN AU is the secret best podcast and Game Scoop is fairly useless once they've gone video.

I've listened to other podcasts mentioned in threads and for the most part, they're either too dry, too self important, or so badly produced it's not worth the time, or even worse, it's full of four guys uhh and erming while sputtering out their point.

Oh yeah, I forgot because I dropped it and never looked back, I also used to love the Rooster Teeth Podcast, back when it was the Drunk Tank. But I can not stand the show anymore, I no longer think anyone at Rooster Teeth is entertaining.
