Podcast that you liked and now don't like?

I don't listen to any videogame podcasts anymore. I used to have bombcast rebelfm retronauts etc in my list.

Since I don't really care about videogames and haven't for some time now I don't listen to them anymore. I will sometimes listen to the Indoor Kids.

All the videogame stuff has been replaced with Nerdist/Earwolf/Comedy podcasts.

Am I the only one who finds the Mark-less episodes the best?

I think they are all good, in different ways.

Edit: About all the talk about Andrea on Weekend Confirmed being an Xbox fangirl. Well, I guess she kinda is, but Garnett himself is also a huge Sony fanboy, so I think it makes the podcast more balanced to have her there. They could really use somebody that likes Nintendo as well imo, as they usually gets dismissed way to fast.

I think its kind of interesting in this thread that when listeners stop listening to a podcast due to bias its almost always because the podcaster(s) in question shows a preference for Xbox.

Like I've already said in my previous posts, the Idle Thumbs crews' distaste for mainstream AAA console titles is largely a result of those titles becoming repetitive, derivative, yearly exploitations of the same IP. Their position is not "Oh I don't like this game because it's popular." Their position is "I'm just not interested in this because it's the same game I played last year (or two years ago)."

I'm pretty sure that The Last of Us sold more than 5 copies, and it got plenty of discussion and interest from Idle Thumbs, though I can't remember Chris' particular opinion (I skipped a lot of talk to avoid spoilers).

He mostly talked about how awful it was that they did the "find the board to cross the buildings" thing too often, which I both kind of understand but also an opinoin I find a bit grating because they are intentionally slowing the game down to have some character development or comic relief in the game but he just saw it as another pointless thing AAA games make you do because this game has to be X hours or whatever. He goes back to the well for that opinion a little too much and so much of the cast is navel gazing these days that it's harder to listen to than in the old days... I still listen every time it comes out though because there's no other podcasts that I've found that have any depth.

Shane Bettenhousen proves you wrong though. If anything I wish podcasters would be MORE biased and assertive. If you're a fanboy proclaim it loud and proud and argue about it. All this trying to be neutral is bullshit. That's why 1UY was so good. A Sony guy and a MS guy at each others throats. Good times.

I actually agree with you. Its just that Weekend Confirmed purport to be a podcast for all consoles, not unlike 1UY, but there is no Sony fanboy or Nintendo fanboy to balance out Andrea Rene or Gies on RebelFM. Most of the time when either of them spout obvious fanboy rhetoric the other hosts just halfheartedly agree (or wholeheartedly in the case of RebelFM). Thats just as bad as everyone forcing themselves to be neutral.

I agree. What I don't like is when someone is so clearly biased and then falls head over heels to dismiss anyone who dares to point this out. Listen, we're all human -- we all have biases. 8-4 Play does a good job of this, as well.

Random podcast reference nearly no one will get (although I'm sure ZanzibarBreeze can back me up): I enjoy Dave Dameshek for the same reason. He is brash and unabashed about his Steelers fandom and other random biases, in a world (sports) in which people are hardly ever upfront about that kind of thing.

Weekend confirmed is so boring. It can be used as a sleeping aid.

I hate how neutral they are it only makes them seem disingenuous when they do criticize something like the Ms DRM thing.

I guess the problem is that there arent really many Sony or Nintendo fans on podcasts, or at least people who will admit it. Sony seems to like to hire the ones who are vocal Sony fanboys.

I really enjoyed The Besties, it had a really weird a stupid king of the hill style fight to the death to determine the game of the year all year round for their first year. In the second year they turned it into a show and tell, and its just not fun anymore.

The bombcast is still my absolute favorite podcast, but Jeff is not the best host. I probably wouldn't be complaining, if it weren't for Vinny being so good at it.

You are tripping if you think Garnett is a Sony fanboy.

Ever listened to the Blue Show while it was around? Pretty great Sony podcast

I don't listen to a lot of podcasts, but I can only think of maybe one that had a Sony bias and it was just one person not the whole podcast.

Speaking of which, the only one I don't listen to anymore is the CAGcast and that is because of their MS bias.

Ever listened to the Blue Show while it was around? Pretty great Sony podcast

But i dont want to listen to an all Sony podcast with unopposed sony supporters just like I dont like podcasts that have an unopposed MS fanboy/girl. I cant stand Playstation Nation and the Playstation blogcast. The only reason I like Beyond still is because Greg Miller makes me laugh.

I haven't really listened to CAGCast in 5 years or more, but yeah they were always pretty anti-Sony (if not pro-Microsoft). They'd read almost any stupid speculative negative Sony rumor from Kotaku, and then discuss it as though it were god's honest truth.

Given how much the tables have turned in the last six months, I'm almost curious to hear them again now and see if they've come around to being a little less harsh towards Playstation. It always seemed weird to me that Cheapie had such a distaste for the platform considering he was based in Japan, and just by virtue of his location the PS3 would have yielded much more choice in terms of games to play.

I just don't get the point of listening to multiple podcast...on the same subject.

I tried, I really did for the last 2 months..but how many times can you listen to people rave about the same game and comment on another's bugs? Seriously spent the last 2 months listening to "Zelda, Mario, Console Launch, Zelda, Mario, Terraway, Mario, BF4 bugs, Zelda etc.."
Rinse repeat..

Bombast is the best, hands down. With or without Ryan no other podcast touches on the same games every other podcast does and talks about the same news.
The difference is, Bombcast has something no other cast does...a cast that is entertaining, bordering on an almost comedy-esque charm.

Vinny, Jeff, and Brad destroy any other gaming podcast when it comes to banter, comedy, and entertainment.
The loss of Ryan sucks but the remaining cast still put together the most entertaining/silly/funny gaming podcast.

I just don't get the point of listening to multiple podcast...on the same subject.

A lot of people have more time to listen than you do. A lot of people listen not just to hear news, but because they want a specific person's impressions of a specific game.

And of course, some podcasts cover very different areas of gaming. Weekend Confirmed covers a completely different set of games than Idle Thumbs, for example. If you were listening to Idle Thumbs you would have heard at most 10-20 minutes on Zelda/Mario, with the rest of the time spent on stuff like Starbound, Day Z, Nuclear Throne, Just Cause 2 Multiplayer Mod, X-COM, and Mario games that run on calculators :)

I listen to podcast about 35 hours a week..

I tried Weekend Confirmed, Player One, 8-4, Bombcast, CAG, Beyond, and Playstation Nation these last 2 months.

But, I also listen to Rogan, WTF, Kill Tony, Fitzdog, The Nerdist, Indoor Kids, and a few others..

So maybe while I enjoy gaming, I also like to be entertained...and NONE of these other podcast do gaming AND entertainment/witty banter like Bombcast.

Seriously, I had to listen to about 20 hours combined about the same games by listening these assorted gaming cast. But not one of them had me laughing like Jeff's insights on Pipe Dope or the back in forth of nonsense Jeff, Vinny and Brad have..true comedic/entertaining chemistry every other show lacks.

I still listen to the CAGcast because outside of the times they do exactly what you described, I still like listening to them.

But I think you'll get a kick out of the last episode. Here are some choice parts:

1) Shipwreck defending MS for not putting games on sale on Xbox One because it's only been a month and a half.

2) Shipwreck suggesting that free games are bad business when Wombat said he was disappointed that MS was not doing something more like PS+. Also "Who out there even has time to play any of those games anyway?" Have you forgotten who the heck your audience is?!?! If you've ever read Shipwreck's tweets about PS+ free games, he sounds like getting free games actually pains him.

3) "Ryse is the best next-gen exclusive" -Shipwreck (this is whatever, I mean it's his opinion, but given how extremely pro-Xbox he is and how negative he is to Sony exclusives...)

4) Cheapy saying that he is disappointed in Forza and has stopped playing because there aren't enough cars and that it's ridiculous that the Veyron is a $20 DLC. Shipwreck again to the rescue that he's fine with his Skyline.

5) Last but not least, when Wombat brings up the news that Sony outsold MS by 1.2 million and saying that's huge. Shipwreck responds "But the Xbox is more expensive and Sony launched in way more countries." When Wombat and Cheapy explain to him that that is irrelevant, Shipwreck claims he just wanted to point that out, you know just because.

So um... this episode was actually more balanced than most since Cheapy and Wombat were actually being pretty honest and at least opposing Shipwreck on some things. Also Shipwreck recommends Danganronpa, so it's not all bad.

The show wasn't really pro Sony, just Sony focused content. Think of the Bombcast stripped down to 30 minutes, with an emphasis on Sony. That's similar to what it was. It's over now, but it was a pretty great show.

I find 8-4 to be unbearable. I listened to it for a solid year, mostly because I live in Japan and enjoyed listening to their perspectives on things, but I still think the podcast is crap. There is waaaaaay too much Monster Hunter talk. Mark seems like he never really learned people skills and some of the insults he hurls around without fear of repercussion seem pretty mean-spirited. I still can't tell JJ and Jon apart, and even though they've been podcasting for years, none of them have learned that it's not fun for the listener when they constantly talk over each other. It just comes across as juvenile to me. Then you throw in the constant self-congratulations on a job well done regarding all of their recent translation gigs (although they really do good work) and it's just too much for me.

I used to enjoy RebelFM quite a bit when it first started, but I find it hard to listen to these days. Even though Tyler didn't contribute much, I still enjoyed his presence. I liked how he and Anthony would giggle at stuff like Anthony's stories about the Kerbal Space Program. Arthur didn't bother me at first, but in the last couple years he's gotten pretty bad. Matt Chandronait seems like a cool dude but he has trouble articulating his opinions. Every time he speaks it seems like he feels pressured to say something profound or to spark a new talking point, so he just keeps talking and talking and doesn't really contribute much. When Anthony moved to Seattle that was pretty much the end for me. Even though he's still on the podcast it just isn't the same.

I still love me some Weekend Confirmed and Bombcast though. I do miss Patrick but I also really like Drew. And of course, losing Ryan was huge both personally and for the podcast. I think Jeff is doing a fantastic job as the new host though.

Well you kind of know what your going to get with the Playstation blogcast but they do have Ryan Clements on the show and I always liked him when he was on Beyond. And Playstation Nation is just way too long. 3 hour podcast and like half of it is them talking about movies or some other bullshit I don't care about and their not really that funny like GB is. If they cut the length in half, I'd probably start listening again.

Ever listened to the Blue Show while it was around? Pretty great Sony podcast

Blue show was great. Too bad the guy's doing it quit. They were a fun listen and they weren't total Sony fanboys either. Hell, one of dudes said he didn't turn his ps3 on for months iirc.

I haven't really listened to CAGCast in 5 years or more, but yeah they were always pretty anti-Sony (if not pro-Microsoft). They'd read almost any stupid speculative negative Sony rumor from Kotaku, and then discuss it as though it were god's honest truth.

I doubt it. Last time I listened to Cagcast was right around the MS drm stuff and they were just defending MS like their life depended on it. It was just too much for me and stopped listening. I'm sure they've come up with some bs reason why Sony is doing better than MS right now.

But not one of them had me laughing like Jeff's insights on Pipe Dope or the back in forth of nonsense Jeff, Vinny and Brad have..true comedic/entertaining chemistry every other show lacks.

Well if it wasn't already obvious, I would recommend Idle Thumbs. None of their participants are game journalists, so they aren't obligated to play and complete every AAA game by the time it hits store shelves. So at the very least, they won't be discussing the same games everyone else is. They just play what they're interested in, rather than playing whatever game just got released. This means they are much more enthusiastic in their discussion, but it also means they talk about a much more narrow segment of games.

I can't say if you'll find them as funny or entertaining as the Bombcast, but it might be worth easing yourself into it by checking out some old episodes where they have Bombcasters as guests. I know Brad Shoemaker and Patrick Klepek have been on in the last 6-12 months..

This is why I stopped listening. Its one thing to like a product a company puts out or even like the company but what those guys do on that show is a whole new level of fanboyism I just can't comprehend.

3) "Ryse is the best next-gen exclusive" -Shipwreck (this is whatever, I mean it's his opinion, but given how extremely pro-Xbox he is and how negative he is to Sony exclusives...)

I've actually played Ryse more than any other exclusive on PS4 or Xbox One. I'm not sure if this is due to it actually being good, or me just getting caught up in the feedback loop of leveling a character in multiplayer. I think Ryse pales in comparison to more fleshed out character-action games like Bayonetta or Metal Gear Rising, but since there's nothing else remotely like it on PS4/Xbone it gets top honors from me. Killzone could be the best FPS in years and I wouldn't really care because I just don't play FPS games anymore. Between Killer Instinct, Killzone, Ryse, Dead Rising, Forza, Resogun, and Knack, I don't think Ryse is such a bad choice at all. Obviously it depends on how compelling you find Ryse's combat and multiplayer. If you're only weighing it on the strength of the singeplayer campaign it is hard to recommend.

It is interesting to hear that Wombat and Cheapie have become more critical of Microsoft, so maybe I will give it a try if I run out of stuff to listen to next week.

I had to stop following Shipwreck on Twitter since every other tweet was him going down to his local Walmart and counting how many Vitas were still on the shelf just so he could mock Sony (I'm serious. He'd even take pictures. He did this for weeks.). Dude could give Gies a run for his money.

Blue show was great. Too bad the guy's doing it quit. They were a fun listen and they weren't total Sony fanboys either.
Yeah, Blue Show was an example of how to do a platform specific podcast right. It was quite similar to what Three Red Lights used to be back when Hilary was still in it. I loved the snark and irony mixed with enthusiasm.

Podcast Beyond is passable, and I have it downloading automatically to my phone, but most weeks I just delete it without listening, if there's something more interesting in Stuff You Should Know or Big Picture Science.

Too bad that NPR stopped publishing It's All Politics. It was a nice way to get my weekly fix of American politics. (There's something wrong with me...)

Every other tweet is about how Sony has no store presence at his local target or how hes never buying another game on PSN since it'll just be free in a month anyway or criticizing some Sony business decision.

I once tweeted him why he never equally criticizes bad MS decisions and he replied "because i dont feel like they've made any?" Really? Really?

He wasnt like that at all before the whole xbox one thing. I dont understand the recent change.

Yeah thats why i said its fine, best games are totally subjective. I just noted given the context of him basically being super positive on everything Xbox and negative at anything Sony except for Danganronpa.

Definitely Bombcast for me. I liked it back when I first started listening, but have become burnt out. I think in general, I've become tired of Giant Bomb. I know that's an unpopular opinion as they have a huge following on here. But it is what it is. I remember watching their coverage for Xbox One. I just wanted to see the Xbox One in action, and they spent most of the time making jokes about the internet connection and just talking over each other. I found it quite annoying actually.

I think my big issue with it it in all honesty, is I feel there needs to be a balance between their personality driven style, and content. I find the personality stuff is way too front and center, and too often obscures the content. Which is how I feel about Bombcast now (too much going on, they talk over each other too much. It's too much about them, and not the subject matter). And yeah, I get that Giant Bomb is about the personalities. That is what made them big. It's why I loved them back in the day. But I've just found that lately, I don't really like them as much as I used to, or their humor.

So that applies to their podcast for sure. Of course, I totally respect those that don't feel that way. Who are still big fans. And I'm totally willing to acknowledge that it might just be me. That I've changed as a person as I've gotten older, so I don't mesh as well with their stuff as I sued to. So I'm weary to say the show itself has gotten worse. I personally just don't enjoy it as much. *shrugs*

He wasnt like that at all before the whole xbox one thing. I dont understand the recent change.

I've never listened to the show, but this sentiment became pervasive this time last year. (weird to think the PS4 hadn't even been announced yet). A lot of shows seem to be hosted by people who hold their audience with contempt for disagreeing and not sharing their views.

But don't believe they're biased for a second, they were given both consoles at their respective press events.

Totally agree. There is also the fact that I'm 50 this year, and just find it difficult to take someone seriously when they still insist on referring to themselves as "gaming jesus".

But yes, his people skills are atrocious. Sometimes he talks to the rest of the cast like he is a teacher talking to naughty school kids...so fucking patronising.

I used to love the Bombcast when it first started, but all the food talk started to get on my tits and it has slowly become self indulgent wank. They have so many fanboys fawning over everything they say, that they just seem to think they can talk about any old shit and people will find it funny. But they aren't half as funny as they like to think they are.

I liked it when Caravella was more in the background when it started as well, but since he assumed a louder role and thinks everything he says is hilarious, I have had to tune out. I really can't stand him and he killed the podcast for me. And yes yes, I know I'm in the minority.

Yeah, I'm really glad someone else picked up on that. And I'm honestly very surprised that "gaming Jesus" doesn't get called out more for his antics. I don't remember who it was, either John or JJ, was trying to talk and every time he opened his mouth Mark would play that "come on ride the train" sound bite. Admittedly, it was kinda funny the first time, but by the 10th time I was ready to turn the podcast off and it was clear that either John or JJ was also kinda pissed.

He also treats Hiroko like shit. Literally every time he speaks to her he is saying something to put her down. I feel like he thinks he can do that because that kind of behavior is kind of normal in Japan, but even in jest it just makes me think that he's an asshole. And he also treats the interns poorly on air, which goes along with the whole sempai/kouhai system here in Japan, but is still bullshit all the same.

And finally, again I don't know if it's John or JJ, but one of them is whiny as fuck. I remember an episode right after E3 last year, one of them literally sounded like he was going to cry when talking about the Xbox One and that whole fiasco.

I'm honestly surprised that more people aren't annoyed by these things. Having a podcast that deals with mostly Japanese games and a Japanese perspective is wonderful, but I really can't stand 8-4 because of the reasons I listed.

I kind of agree with the Mark criticisms, but I'm pretty sure the "come on ride the train" sound byte for the pre-E3 podcasts are edited in after the podcast is done by JJ himself.

Though, it was played after it's actually said on the podcast, so maybe you meant that Mark kept interrupting by yelling it out.

Yeah, it could've been him yelling out. I'm not sure exactly what was going on or how it was edited, but it was clear that Mark was not going to let whoever it was speak their mind. Whoever it was that was trying to get a word in was obviously getting kinda pissed off about it too. Either way, super annoying for the listener and just makes Mark kinda look like an ass. I'm sure he found it hilarious though.

I used to love Podtoid. Then it ended and Brad, Samit, Topher, Aaron etc left.

They restarted it with just Jim Sterling and Jonathon Holmes, and I just couldn't listen anymore.
Gone was the hilarious back and forth between a mix of varied personalities, replaced by Jim just spurting god-awful profanities and unfunny rambling stories while Jonathon just kinda sat there and occasionally laughed at the end.

I miss first-gen Podtoid.

So I'm in the mood for some new gaming podcasts. Weekend Confirmed is ending, so that leaves only the GiantBombcast as my go-to gaming podcast until Garnett gets something else up and running. Can anyone recommend me some good ones that might be somewhat similar to GB and Weekend Confirmed? For reference, I also enjoyed RebelFM until Arthur took over and Tyler left and Anthony moved to Seattle. I like a cast with good chemistry and I value entertainment just as much as actual game talk. I also don't mind off-topic stuff, just as long as there is some game chat. I don't mind low-brow humor either. I really just want to avoid stuff that is boring and monotone speakers.

I haven't listened to any of them yet, but I just downloaded the following to my queue:
-IGN Podcast Beyond
-CAGcast
-Gamers with Jobs
-Idle Thumbs
-Player One Podcast

Any I should add? Any on this list that I should immediately cross off given my preferences listed above? Thanks!

Some people in this thread mentioned the Radio Free Nintendo cast and I gave it a listen. Not bad and its nice as a new Wii U owner to have a more focused cast on that console, but it's been really mixed for me. One of the hosts is pretty solid and I appreciate his commentary and discussion, but usually he is surrounded by a lot of uninformed or naive crew that can be a bit tough to deal with. I do like the conflicting opinions on certain games though, far better arguments and discussion than most of the 'big' gaming casts where there is rarely any push-back on opinions. Actually it's nice to listen to a cast where more than one person actually plays the games. Actual round-table debate beyond the expected AAA releases.

Started listening to IGN's stuff out of curiosity as well. Nintendo Minute and Beyond are alright, but the in-jokes and personalities are a bit ego-centric. Maybe I am just too new to the panels and need time to adjust. Some of the discussion is solid, but again I am too new and will give it more time before I cast a negative stance.

I think you're reading into things too much and are giving Ship a negative-Sony bias that really isn't there.

Gamers With Jobs is still the best all-around gaming podcast out there, in my opinion. Anyone who isn't already subscribed to it should check it out.

The most recent episode of The Scorecast (episode 18 as of this writing) was also great, featuring discussions with developers from From Software and Kojima Productions about life as a game developer in Japan. It's a young show, but I think it has potential.

For IGN their Nintendo Voice Chat is pretty fun. Lots of names from Podcasts you might recognize, like Retronauts and the Comedy Button. Love me some Peer Schneider.

Holy cow, that's a hell of a get! I may have to check that out. Thanks!

I listened to DLC this morning. The Skype delay was awful. I'll try again another time.

Started listening to The Comedy Button and I wish I added it sooner. Good stuff.

If you like wrestling, purchase MLW VIP. Jim Cornette's show alone is worth it.

So I'm listening to CAG right now and I wanna get this straight. Cheapy is in Tokyo, another dude is in NY and another is in Ohio? What kind of a rig are they using to sound so good? It'd be easy to make the mistake of thinking they are all in the room together.

That's one of the reasons I kinda stopped listening to RebelFM, because Anthony skyping in from Seattle just sounded too disjointed.

Giant Bombcast. I used to love it, and I could listen to it still if I really wanted to, but they primarily talk about western games and I like Japanese games more, so I eventually only wanted to listen to their non-gaming stuff. Now I listen to a podcast that's way more balanced and I'll admit has a bias towards Japanese games. Most important thing is I like all of the dudes talking, which was also true for the bombcast until Patrick showed up, and Brad was sometimes a real downer.
