Giant bombcast. It seems they talk less and less about videogames. They also don't seem to like videogames very much.

I'm sad to say it but this seems to be my viewpoint lately as well. I mean, I used to like the side discussion about their personal lives and what food they were eating, etc when it was an aside from the videogames. Lately, it seems like that's more of the show and the videogames are an outlier they feel like they have to talk about but don't really want to.

I think a large part of this is Ryan being missing. He was a great host who knew when to move on to a different subject. I like Jeff but I feel like he'd be happy just watching something on the internet and streaming it the entire episode or listening to beeping for an hour or so. There's no one to reel him in. Vinny thinks it's hysterical. Brad just wants to play DOTA and Drew doesn't really play a ton of games. Jeff's gaming taste is practically opposite to my own. To each their own, but lately I've been getting pretty bored listening to this podcast.

Rebel fm. Used to think it was a place for honest and great conversation. But then Tyler left and there is no one left on that show thaf calls Gies out for his pro microsoft/simcity bullshit. I didnt notice it as much in the begining because Sony was rightly being raked over the coals. But now with Mitch there parroting everything Gies says, it gets too much at times.

I still listen every week. I just hate when podcasters and radio hosts think people care about what they did on the weekends. I don't mind being off-topic for a little bit, but I listen to the podcast to hear about video games. Last week they spend what felt like an hour discussing vaccinations, not bathing and their holiday fun time. :/ This is supposed to be a videogame podcast. I couldn't care less if you got sick over the break or what you did with your family - that's not interesting to me as a listener.

This happens a lot on CAGcast as well I noticed. Where the hosts think I care about the little mundane things they do on a regular basis.

I just think it's a matter of them not having the proper fourth chair. I like Drew but I don't think his presence is conducive to a lot of game talk.

I gotta say that I am impressed that the Insert Credit podcast hasn't really dropped in quality at all after what, a year and a half now. The format kind of depends on the host Jaffe coming up with interesting questions that will interest all three of the panelists, while at the same time not interesting Tim too much or he will just not stop talking. And by and large it's been working well.

I think I've actually burned myself out on this podcast. I know the elitism is part of the podcast's charm but it can be a bit much after a while.

Lately P1P has been getting better with Mike on and Insert Credit is still always a fun diversion.

Rebel FM. I used to love the Podcast, and don't get me wrong I still listen to it. The problem is the constant change between hosts. Really the only person that is good on there is Matt Chandronet (spelling). I have never been a fan of Arthur or Mitch Dyer. I find them both annoying as shit. Anthony is basically just off in his own world.

Rage select is one that I stopped listening to recently. I like the hosts, but I feel like they don't have a viewpoint that I hadn't heard from the other podcasts I listen to already. Plus half the show is answering emails from the fans- which is always my least favorite part of any radio show or podcast - I feel like they don't really add anything to the show most of the time except to pad it out.

1UP Yours is still king for me. I still listen to the classic lineup (Luke, Shane, etc.) podcasts now and then as a "retro" podcast

He said he couldn't stand gaming podcasts because none of them even seem to like videogames anymore, and the impression almost seems to be they are podcasting because they have to, and would rather not do it. Retronauts was/is the fucking worst for that, I think it's just the way Parish comes across, but it's hard to enjoy. I want to hear people excited to talk games, the way Shane & Luke would banter on 1up Yours. I cannot count the number of sighs & yawns I have heard on podcasts in the past year or two.

The only ones that I don't really get that sense from are POP, and Weekend Confirmed. Still love those.

Jeff is great in more measured doses on the Bombcast. I love Jeff, cyncism and all. Him as the occasional host would give the podcast a less structured wacky vibe for a change of pace. It's not as good now that he's always the host. He dominates the conversation and overpowers Vinny and Brad and whoever else is there.

Some people didn't like Ryan's more structured approach but I did. After the intro, I liked when he finally said "what's goin' on Vinny, how you doin? Video games?"

And then you knew it was Vinny's time, and it would usually stay Vinny's time until he was done with whatever he was talking about. The other guys would bounce stuff off Vinny and add their anecdotes, jokes, and opinions, but it would clearly remain Vinny time. There's nothing more enjoyable than Vinny time, and then Brad, Jeff, and finally Ryan time.

But now, Jeff does a similar thing but next thing you know he's talking about whatever he's playing or doing and it might seem like Jeff's time. This step-up is just not as good. It's still a good show don't get me wrong.

I'd put podcast beyond in there too. After 300+ episodes they all sound like they actually enjoy talking about Playstation.

With that being said, there have still been some great episodes of the new Retronauts. My favorites are the localization, wrestling and Harvest Moon episodes.

I personally love Harvest Moon, hearing all the inside stories about its development was fantastic on their most recent episode. I think the problem with them is they're basically retreading old ground now. Jeremy and crew have talked about most of the subject they go over already in depth. Retro topics are great, but eventually you burn your source material to the dregs.

Sometimes, when there's a guest host who is familiar with the game, NONE of the main hosts have played it (or have only played an hour or so). While Retronauts has a nice focus on giving the history behind the episode's subject, a big part of the show is nostalgia and hearing the hosts' personal experiences, and there's big a big lack of that. It would be nice if everyone could at least check the game out a little bit prior to recording, but I understand that they are all very busy. I guess part of the problem is that they have had to do a lot of episodes suggested by Kickstarter backers - those episodes are almost always worse than the ones where a host will pick a subject they are enthusiastic about.

With all the mentions of Bombcast, I started wondering if there was an element of nostalgia or if the older episodes were better. I decided to download the episode from 11-20-2012 and listen to it on my ride to work. I tried to choose at random by just scrolling and scrolling until I thought I was far enough back. This might be the greatest episode ever.

First, it's right before thanksgiving so the opening banter is top notch. Brine vs. No Brine. various side dish discussions. They manage to bring up Hostess going out of business and Vinny suggests every hostess related web site would make a good porn URL.

They talk a bit about the walking dead.

Oh yeah, The WII U launched 2 days ago, and they talk about the live stream of unboxing and game playing. Then they predict a lot of the things wrong with Wii U and where they will be in the future.

I haven't finished the whole episode, but I know there is some major Mass Effect 3 talk coming from Brad.

Do yourselves a favor and re-listen to this episode. Or listen again, for the very first time.

Yeah, Blue Show was an example of how to do a platform specific podcast right. It was quite similar to what Three Red Lights used to be back when Hilary was still in it. I loved the snark and irony mixed with enthusiasm.

That brought a little tear to my eye... I'm glad people enjoyed The Blu Show. We enjoyed making it.

All the posts about Retronauts is kind of surprising to me. I think if they didn't have the miniepisodes the new version would be seen in a better light. Having an episode every week and having the mini episodes kind of "cheapens" the quality. The full-length episodes have nearly all been fantastic IMO. I think the "mini" episodes would have been better done as full episodes with multiple topics.

I get the strong sense that Retronauts is going to be done for good after their present obligation is up. It sucks, but if it ends this way I feel like the last of their primary episodes stand up to the best of their old ones.

Epic Battle Cry - This was before I knew the Giant Bombcast existed. I kinda liked it more in it's early days, but it started to be more a ramble about the same stuff over and over again. It got flat and boring.

Nothing against the guys though, I still follow Brent Adams and Tony Grice on twitter, etc.

As with most, the 1up Yours was the king. Pretty much anything that 1up alumni have put together recently is nearly unlistenable to me (especially Weekend Confirmed. I couldn't stand Garnett on 1up, so there's no way I can tolerate him on his own show).

My current benchmark for podcasts is 8-4. It's the only podcast since 1up Yours that I can listen to over and over again. I really, really like that cast.

This is almost all gaming podcasts, but the chief offenders are indeed Idle Thumbs, the Bombcast, and especially RebelFM. Chandronait has just taken it to a new level of language abuse. The guy is no longer content to use that prefix to modify adjectives (super-fun, super-intense, super-buggy), he's moved on to using it to modify verbs in a horrific fashion (I super-love that game, I super-backed that kickstarter, I'm super-buying that when it comes out).

No one, nothing, can take away everything that Retronauts has accomplished over its lifespan. It has been one of the most important, and inspirational, gaming podcasts; and if it goes away, that legacy will remain. I hope that all of you are proud of the show, and of what you've collectively accomplished with it.

Used to listen to this A LOT. But Redban is annoying to listen to. Plus every episode turned into some pseudo-philosophical deliberation on the process of comedy. Which is a good subject, but discussed EVERY episode regardless of the guest? No thanks.

The Nerdist: Same with above (Chris Hardwick being a comedian) - but less so. Though they can be hit or miss.


Gaming:
Ladies of leet: First few eps I tried were good. But then they usually think most games are "hard" therefore they're bad.

VGS: not sure why I even started on this, they just sound like the sort to gather "CPMs".

Gamers With Jobs: Used to like this, but they keep on railing consoles/PlayStation so, probably perfect for the Master Race gamers here.

A Band of Gamers: I really like Joel, but they started focusing too much on music so that got boring.

PSNStores: THey sound real depressed and un-enthusiastic most of the time. TBH, not sure why they're even doing it, or why they even associate themselves with PSN? As they seem to constantly complain about PS.

Yeah, they don't seem to have a lot of experience with anything left. Although, the recent Baldurs Gate episode featured a guest that had a ton of knowledge. I guess that is why I am really appreciating NeoGaf's own "Back In My Play" as they don't talk about a game without bringing on someone who has played it a bunch (and they play it a lot themselves). Professional game reviewers often don't have time to sit and play these old games. I think thats why retro shows may be best left to the fans.

I'm also suprrised at the Gamers With Jobs hate. I'm about 32 and I really enjoy their view on gaming...one of the few sites that focuses a lot of energy on PC gaming as well. I just feel like they are kindred spirits (even if they don't play a ton of games).

Retro League - They fell into the same trap a lot of retro shows do. They already talked about the games they've played and now they only have stuff left that they are unfamiliar with and can't talk much about. A retro show is much much more fun when the hosts know the subject matter well or if they take the time to play a lot of the game they are going to talk about. I still like the hosts a lot and appreciate all the work they've done...but I think they need to reformat, add new hosts or guests or move on.


Several other gaming podcasts. I guess I just get sick of podcasts where the hosts no nothing about the games they are talking about and don't care enough to play them. I guess that is why I enjoy non-industry professional podcasts so much. A lot of times they just end up caring a lot more.

Haha, you're totally right about Gamers With Jobs, very very pc centric and they don't care much for anything else. It seems like GAF is more console-centric from my experience (nothing wrong with being either/or/both of course) and I could see why people get annoyed with that.

Well, I see where you're coming from, but I don't know that I'd go that far. There are a series of regular folks that appear on this show, each of whom has different tastes. It's true that PC gaming is the one thread that connects them all, but Shawn Andrich and Sean Sands are just as likely to talk about a console game, and are always fair when doing so, in my opinion. I could say the same for Julian Murdoch, but his true passion is for board games.

You might be thinking of Cory Banks. He's the managing editor of PC Gamer, so as you can imagine, his tastes skew more PC-centric. Even so, I still wouldn't describe him as an elitist; I think he's generally fair.

The one person that they have on their show that I would describe as an elitist jackass is Rob Zacny. The guy's a hell of a writer, and he's got a great strategy gaming podcast called Three Moves Ahead; but if he's on and the conversation turns to console games, I can see why some folks would find him off-putting.

Player One Podcast. I started listening about a year ago. I initially really enjoyed it, but ended up stopping 3 months ago. I feel like there was too much negativity for my taste, I'd often get riled up by the discussions being had. I try to separate myself from those sorts of things. In my opinion, a podcast like Weekend Confirmed has a similar level of discourse and discussion, but done in a more constructive and enjoyable manner.

Sorry, which thread were we posting in again? It doesn't matter, though. Every single backer whose topic we've covered so far has really enjoyed the episode they sponsored (or so they say, anyway). They're the audience I am most concerned about making happy, because they made the biggest sacrifices to keep the show going.
