Got so much in the Pokemon spirit that I bought the original JP Red in Den Den Town today.

I haven't played at all since Red and Blue, so XY has been fantastic.

So glad to be back. It's like being in high school again.

Have have played them jut about every gen, but usually for about 30 hrs and then I get bored. I have put over 80 in Y and am showing no signs of slowing down :/.

You'll need things to cover some of your teams weaknesses. Other than Mewtwo-X I don't think that there's any worthwhile spacial attack fighter. You'll also need Hitmontop for spinning threats away and being the team's wall. Also make sure that you can cover most types with a variety of moves, though that might force to pick up moves that a Pokemon wouldn't pick in a mixed team.

Yeah, Hitmontop is 100% required on my team as the only dude who can spin stuff away. Blaziken as the standard sweeper. I'm not really going for a hyper-competitive team though, it's just something fun to mess around with.

Mewtwo-X SpA concentration - Psystrike, Aura Sphere; maybe Ice Beam and Flamethrower
Breloom - SubPunch set
Toxicroak - Toxic Stall set
Machamp - SubChamp dynamic punch set

If I ever use a full fighting team, Hitmonchan deserves a spot on it. It's my favorite fighting type. Wish it was stronger/faster though.

It's a one use item. I just used one on my Togekiss actually it asks if you want to change the ability to Serene Grace and it's done.

Took me about 4 or 5 hours to breed a handful of perfect Pokemon. Then I traded all but one for more perfect Pokemon. It's quite easy, actually.

the legendary birds? I immediately encountered a Moltres after acquiring the Poke Radar, which promptly ran away immediately. Seemed super scripted. The poke radar hasn't seemed useable at all. What am I doing wrong?

I'd love just a vague pointer as to where to go next or what the hell I'm doing wrong with the Radar. lol. Thanks.

Also, where's a good primer on what IVs are and how they work? The talk about 31 confuses me as I've seen it in multiple contexts now.

It really doesn't take too long at all in this gen. For example, I was able to breed a perfect Marill a few days ago in like an hour or so.

5 perfect IVs is what I always aim for personally: In the stats that matter, of course.

Remember that there is one stat that your Pokémon may not even need, so 6 IVs aren't all that important. But, I guess it must feel damned good getting one. I haven't breeded one myself...yet.

All games in the same generation (including third versions and remakes of older games) have cross-play. For example, Diamond/Platinum/SoulSilver were all fully compatible in terms of battles/trades, since they're all 4th generation.

Everything is compatible within its generation. Usually there is a mechanism to allow limited connectivity between subsequent generations too.

I just caught two Dittos so I can breed some Fennekins and Bulbasaurs but the daycare man says my pokemon don't like each other. I have tried pairing a Jolly and a Modest Ditto with my Brave Fennekin and Modest Bulbasaur, but neither of the combinations worked (the daycare man outside keeps saying they dont like each other).

Am I doing something wrong here or do I just have bad luck?

Ditto prefers to play with other pokemon (won't breed with itself).

Just because pokemon don't like each other doesn't mean they won't bang given enough time locked together.

Lol, that's how I feel. I might get Espeon for screens. Otherwise, the only Pokemon I use that doesn't just attack or status/boost is Vaporeon.
