Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 - The Official Thread

tell me more about this scout system

When you enter the negotiations menu, you can search for players as usual. There is now a 'recommended by scout' option which lists his top picks. Scouts start out at level one. Not sure yet how to level them up but it seems that players stats (passing, attack, tackling etc etc) cannot be viewed until the scout is at a higher level.

So would anyone participate in a NeoGAF league? someone else or if they don't want to, myself could make the thread but I don't have the game till' thursday and don't know the match rules and so on (which time limit is adequate, etc) But would you guys be down for it?

I'd definitely be interested in that :)

Thanks for the brief ML impressions Otaku. Practically the main side of the game I am going to play, going to be comfortably weird going back to a mode I haven't played in years.

I boughy my EUR version a couple days ago, just waiting for it to arrive here (Brazil).

I'd like to know how is the online mode... Which modes are in it? Is it easy to play with a friend?

Is there any option file with emblems, names and kits?

I played both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of PES 2010 and must admit that the PS3 version seems to be looking more crisp and also feels more tight. I actually play most multiplatform games on my 360 and played PES 2008 and 2009 also on Xbox 360, because I felt that version was better than the PS3 one. This year it seems the other way around: the PS3 version is better IMO.

Had the game since Wednesday and checked last night and I have 17 hours into this so far :p

I'm flying through the ML, played about 20 matches and I'm fighting Braga all the way for first place.

The one major thing I've noticed is that the difficulty isn't the same as last years. I always start a new Pro Evo on normal/3 stars and this year that was just far too easy. Professional/4 stars is much better but still a little more lenient than last years. Not complaining though :)

Impressions:

I wanted to love this year's iteration soooo much :/

Even if I'm a diehard fan of the series since the PSX days with the Serie A and B patches and I consider the 2009 iteration the worst ever to come out of KCET's offices, I have to say I'm really disappointed with the game.
Graphically it's a huuuuge step up from previous years and the models are incredible, but man the animations (the one thing where PES has always been king) are pure shite :/
The new 360 degree movement means shit, you're still "on rails" with the script taking control of your player, making you, and the ball, go straight out of the pitch without being able to take back control of the player.
Most disappointing thing so far, the players' responsiviness (or lack of it) is infuriating... seriously there's a 2 seconds gap from my button presses to have my players actually pass the ball. Also bundesliga is completely missing again, I mean there's not even a fake one with similar names, the usual crap you'd edit yourself, nope there's none of that, zilch, so the UCL is kinda shitty already because of that (and that means no bundesliga teams in online play). Replays are horrible, playing at like 15 fps just to add meaningless effects that you can't turn off.
And WTF about the controls again, damn Konami is it that hard to have back the various passing types setting? I hate using the right analog stick to manual pass, and thanks to the bullshit unchangeable pass system if I use L1 + O now I'll have my players directly high pass towards the opponents' goal like in Type 1 of yesteryear's PESes (so there's no type 2 or 3 method of semi-auto or manual cross passing, you're forced to the default full automatic unless you use the right analog stick).

Still better than FIFA10 (I hated my time with the game, bought it back after a couple of days, but still this year PES is, once again, far behind Winning Eleven 8 FE (PS2) which is fucking unacceptable.

I'll stick with it another week to try to adapt, but so far it isn't looking good.
Oh, PS3 version.

Oh, PS3 version.

Yup i've bought every version since the first PES on psx but there's no way i'm wasting my money this yr. IMO it's worse than PES 2009 - ok that was more of an arcade game but at least it was fun with no response time issues..and it's not even the response times...the delay I could just about live with but players doing random shuffles and going through spasms during this 'lag' time is unacceptable. And what is up with the new zombie run thing they added. Just terrible. Off the pitch they've improved the presentation and master league - definitely some good shit there but on the pitch is just getting embarrasing IMO. They need to hire some new animators and free up the gameplay...after 4 yrs of this shit on next gen it's just getting dumb now.

Edge review

A scan of Metacritic reveals the intersecting fortunes of Pro Evolution Soccer and its long-term rival, FIFA. Plot the scores on a graph (to fill a rainy afternoon) and the spidery 'X' that emerges tracks FIFA's recent revival against PES's unexpected decline. And the trend continues. FIFA 10 (reviewed in E207) has taken a confident step forward with the introduction of 360-degree dribbling and a swathe of new animations and gameplay tweaks, and PES 2010's response is unconvincing.

The bottom line is that when measured against the fluidity and possiblilty of FIFA, PES 2010 comes up short. It answers FIFA 10's introduction of 360-degree movement with an expanded dribbling system of its own, but as the game's producer, Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka, has admitted, this feature was brought forward to the current game only following the announcement of FIFA's innovation. Konami's game doesn't offer full rotation, with players still noticeably locking into rigid paths as they turn-there are now simply 16 of these rather then eight.

A bigger issue is the relationship between ball and the player, which is stretched by this new development. Extra touches are taken as players move around the ball - an odd double-touch animation has been introduced - and as they turn through the less familiar running angles the ball has a tendency to drift unnaturally to the side. The result is that passing and working attacks through the midfield feels mechanical rather than fun.

It feels like an ageing engine pushed too far - an upgrade too many for a system that needs revolutionary rebuilding. Where FIFA is robust enough to present a physically independent ball to 22 free-running players and let football happen (or, crucially, is good enough to at least convince us that's what's happening), PES is still openly pulling strings and cranking levers. When chasing though balls players will frequently refuse to run or, worse, stuter ridiculously in and out of their sprint animation in order to arrive at what the game deems the right time. We've also seen defenders shunted impossibly sideways when charging down shots and goalkeepers still palming tame shots into the path of onrushing strikers.

Through all this there are frequent eruptions of what once made the game so great. Beating a man with the ball - cutting past a defender on the wing or on the edge of the box - is still enormously gratifying, and more a matter of skill and timing than FIFA's less precise 'do a trick and floor it' approach. And while the passing is slightly automated, this lends a clipped satisfaction - there's something gratifying about creating neat triangles and breaking down defences with angles through balls.

But it also means you never shake off the looming awareness that this is a game of football, an increasingly predictable set of football-like things with patterns and rules and limitations. Where FIFA has pulled together a sophisticated system of autonomous physics and AI that give unprecedented variation and a exceptional illusion of organic play, PES 2010 might still be proficient, but it's robotic and methodical, and firmly in second place. I don't get the praise FIFA gets for animations. Yes, they look nice. But they ruin the gameplay for me. They are masked. You have no control and the extra touches are just there to silicon over the poor button response. Its like playing a laggy game of Halo online. Yes everything moves nicely, and when you shoot someone, they get damaged - BUT, they actually aren't getting hurt, and its just a masked animation to make the lag less noticeable.

FIFA 10 has the same response to PES, just with animations which perform in place of what you're trying to do (if it be pass, shoot, whatever) therefore, it comes down to having control, but not having control and being fooled into thinking you're doing something.

Just my 2 cents, give or take. But FIFA 10 is so unresponsive to me and at times I feel like the game is playing for me, not the other way around.

^^ I guess that could work even though I enjoyed guessing if a youngster would end up being great or not on my own
I can remember scouting Aguero, Sneijder and Walcott way before they became reknown real football players. It was quite satisfying :D

Yeah, I always go for unknown players when buying for my ML team and enjoyed last season whilst watching Europa League matches featuring random teams and seeing some of my ML players in the flesh :D

Just finished up my first season, was joint top for ages thenstarted to crumble as the season drew to a close. If I won my penultimate match I was promoted and I got beat :( Then drew on the last day of the season and missed out on promotion by a goal difference of 2 :(

Brought in some new players though and am aiming for 1st place this year! :D

I downloaded the WEND option file and installed it but it disables trophies for me. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install the 'system data' file too?

You're not doing anything wrong, that's just the way it is.

From what I listened to in Podcasts, using downloaded option files locks out Trophies.

seems like i was wrong. i heard it shortly after the game got released. damn, i have to spend some time on this game. went online and almost lost to some no name team. fucking fifa destroyed my PES moves.

I also don't understand the high praise for FIFA 10's animations. Either these people are playing exclusively online, or they are just purely blind. There have been more than several moments where I've cursed the game verbally in Manager Mode because it fucked up a player purely for set-animation purposes - the game is as rigid as PES has been accused of.

Another thing I am absolutely hating is the fact that teams will win and score regardless of how well you play. I created another Manager Mode file fresh with Juventus for the new patch to see how it goes and there were some games where I was coming up against a mid-tier team who would score first, and subsequently score each time after I equalized. Those scores tend to end in a 3-2 or 4-3 match with the opposition winning. Bit pathetic to have the stats at the end of the game read "20 shots, 3 goals - 5 shots, 4 goals"

The honeymoon for FIFA is well and truly over.

A game that won't track trophies? Hallelujah!

Omg the Chilean team is ranked so bad in this game :(. Almost all the players are around 50-60 and a few at 70.

Darn you Konami!
They've always had a pretty terribly scoring system when it comes to lesser known players. I remember back in the early days of editing players abilities and such just because Konami never bothered with players outside of the bigger global teams, both club and international.

It is annoying. It does sometimes take the player a cple of touches on the ball to go ahead and do what you told him to do. Means you need to anticipate... but the situation changes so quickly, it very often ends up in an aberration of a play...
Sometimes, it vaguely feels justified... i can see he's not in position to do what i ask him to do... either wrong foot or whatever. But most times... it's complete bullcrap.

Where's the info on the PSP version? I've only seen a few screens, but nothing else.

Yeah I'd like some news on this version too. I've only played one PES on PSP (#6 I think) - has the ML been in past versions?

Started from 07 i believe. Though that the PSP ML is .... gimped (players don't age)

FIFA 10 does not have better animations than PES 2010. Hell, FIFA 08 has better animations than both FIFA 10 and 09. This is not a joke either, I actually believe it. FIFA's shooting and crossing animations suck in 90 and 10.

The problem with PES is transitions between animations, nothing else. As far as capturing actual football motions, PES has the upper hand. The only problem is how you go from one motion to the other, but PES always had this problem anyway.

this trophy bug is starting to annoy me. i shout 2 goals from over 35m and i didn't get it. (maybe because i used a second controller to make it easier?)

Just edit the keeper of a team you don't care about so all his stats are 0 then play them on the easiest setting, you'll soon get it :)

Heh, I'm gonna try and get that one soon :)

On my way to the free kick one, slowly but surely. Scored an amazing one with Ronaldo for Portugal :D

how is the online.. can we have some impressions? (ps3 version)

and how about that konami id, do we still have that crap in 2010?

i played 3 matches against a friend yesterday and the online mode worked pretty good. there were some minor lags; but they only appeared when somebody scored a goal.

they got rid of the Konami ID. Thank good. the new online menu looks pretty slick.

and the game features a huge licensed soundtrack. holy shit. kaiser chiefs <3

I miss the old Konami tracks :( even if there are a few hidden away in the playlist menu. "I want to go, go for the goal, don't try to stop me" etc :D

:lol that song was awesome. they should add it into every PES. totally agree with you.

played 5 hours so far. really love the game. scoring feels quite satisfying. and online play is also great. not perfect... but pretty good. the only thing which sucks are the keepers who act quite... strange sometimes. but the game is definetly a step forwards in the right direction.

i want to install an option file but it sucks that they disable the trophy support. i want my bayen :(

It only messes trophies up until you delete the system data file, and then load the game back up. Mine is now getting trophies again whilst using WENB otion file

I never managed to play a match against you in PES 2009, blablurn, even though you're on my friendlist.

I hope I can play at least a couple of them in PES 2010, just for the sake of kicking your ass :D
