Love enviroment colors and style.

Forgive me if this has been answered: any word on a US Vita release?

They really haven't talked about a western release at all. Although it's safe to say that there will be one since it was announced at E3 and because the Tokyo RPG Factory constantly updates in English. So there's no word on whether the Vita version will be brought over.

I just ran across an interview with Yosuke Matsuda (Square's current president) and Atsushi Hashimoto (Setsuna's director) discussing the game and the studio

―Speaking of the launching of new projects, it looks like a new studio is also being established.

M: Over the years, SQEX’s Japanese RPG (JRPG) games have traditionally been highly anticipated by our customers. Thus, desiring to make some sort of brand new RPG game, this time we re-examined the very environment of game creation. SQEX already has its own brand image, and it is probable that new games would also be influenced by this established brand. Therefore, wishing to create new JPRG games independent from and beyond the boundaries of Square Enix, we established TRF.

―So TRF is a completely separate entity.
M: That is correct. This new project was born from the desire to try working under a framework in which creators who agree on a certain idea come together to make it a reality.

―Are these creators all recruited from within SQEX?

M: No, most of them are recruited from outside of SQEX. Even though TRF is under the capital of SQEXHD, because it is being established as an attempt create games as an independent entity, we were careful to reflect that in the make-up of the members as well.

―Please let us in on the concept and planning of what is currently being created at TRF.

M: The extent of what I personally requested was for the creation of a brand new JRPG. “I want to make a new IP.” “I want the expertise of a bunch of creators to be gathered to create an oudou (Authentic, decent) JRPG.” That’s all, really. After that, I believe that the creation process has been centered around Mr. Hashimoto and the others.

H: Our focus consists of two points: that it is a JRPG, and that it is an oudou (Authentic, decent) game. We have gathered a group of people who played, and were skillful at, the oudou RPGs that SQEX created back in the age of Super Nintendo(Super NES®), and are working with them.

―So the bunch you’ve gathered are people who passionately played JRPGs as kids.

H: That’s right. We are trying to give shape to the memories of those fun times. Of course, we are going to arrange it to suit modern tastes.

―Speaking of which, what is the oudou RPG that the two of you have in mind?

M: I won’t say anything beyond the fact that it is an oudou RPG.
H: That’s not fair, is it? (laughs)

M: If I were to state, “I think that something like this is an oudou RPG,” it would implicitly become an order—“Make something like this.” Therefore my request consisted of only the term “*oudou* RPG. Lately, the world is seeing fewer and fewer oudou RPGs. I want the members of TRF to create something of that sort.

―Indeed, the Final Fantasy series, Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and many other titles that SQEXHD has produced to date are ones that remain in people’s memories.

M: I do bear the hope that the gaming experience that we provide will be memorable for our users. “Make something that will do that” is all I have been saying. If I were to make any additional demands, that would affect the contents of the game, so I don’t say anything beyond that. I am also looking forward to seeing what kind of work will be produced in the end.

―You spoke about holding the fundamental essence of the game with the utmost importance. We’d like to inquire about the origins of that awareness, “Project SETSUNA,” which is being launched at TRF. First of all, what is the story behind the naming of the project as “SETSUNA”?

Hashimoto(H): It’s a codename that came from the game’s concept. For this project, we had the concept, “Let’s make a game that portrays heartrending sorrow (setsunai),” and that became the determining factor for the name of the project.

―Thank you. On this topic though, humans have a lot of different emotions; why is it that “heartrending sorrow” was chosen?

H: Many RPGs have been released abroad as well. One of the most important points of “Project SETSUNA” is the concept of creating something that only Japanese people are capable of creating. And so, a story that highlights the emotions and consciousness that only Japanese people can express, such as the wabi-sabi of tea culture, became one of the key points of TRF. Based on that, everyone on the team decided upon the keyword setsunai.

―After “Project SETSUNA,” what sort of prospects are you sketching out?

M: Before anything, making sure that this project is a success is our number one concern. We’d really love for everyone to play our game. Every last one of the staff involved are excellent creators. I hope that this project can cause a sensational stir in the present day game market, and that afterward new works can continue to come into existence. We would like to create the rich soil for that sort of creative spirit.

H: This is only my own desire, but I’d like to create a game that can make people’s hearts race like in the days of Super Nintendo(Super NES®). That being said, I plan to create it using modern graphics. I’ve actually wanted to take on this challenge for a long time now. And because I’ve been thinking that, I want to first make “Project SETSUNA” a success, and then connect that to our next move. I think that our staff are also sprouting weird ideas left and right. At least personally, I hope that we can create an outstanding, pioneering game. Please remember that these are just things that I am thinking (laughs).

―Finally, a message please for all the RPG fans abroad.

M: This is a simple message, but I believe that TRF will surely deliver a game that is fun to play and that will leave a deep imprint in everyone’s memories. I hope that you will all look forward to it.

H: This project has truly gathered a variety of creators. Our team is a gathering of members who, in the old days, beat JRPGs, and from that were inspired to take on the aspiration, “I wanna make games!” With this team, we are creating something that will make people say, “This is fun!” “I wanted to create an RPG like this!” I believe that this is precisely the kind of game RPG fans throughout the world desire. Finally, if all the players were to play it and say “Bravo,” that would be perfection.

Each character seems to have their own unique elemental attribute attack. In Chrono Trigger each character also were assigned an individual element for their spell casting abilities as well.

Unless this is some sort of Limit Break attack and you can execute it when the bubble fills it's color in completely.

Still the middle icon looks like Ice / Snow element, I don't know what the first and third character represents, but each icon is definitely different and corresponds to some sort of elemental attack I think.

I thought that was their "ATB" gauge. At least that's what this gif leads me to believe

Inuhanyou

Believes Dragon Quest is a franchise managed by Sony
It really does look like a legitimate call back to old JRPGs. I will buy this with GUSTO

Okay so it's probably a fancier looking ATB gauge. The individual elemental attack thing is what I was trying to focus on, just like how each character in CT also had their own individual element.

This may not be a Chrono sequel, but a spiritual successor in terms of gameplay, visual style, and music is perfectly fine by me.

I think the yellow bar at the bottom is the ATB gauge.

The orb filled when characters sat with their time meter full, and every time it filled the symbol changed and it started filling again. When they used a magic attack it reset to (presumably) its lowest level. My guess is that letting the orb reach higher levels powers up the next magic attack.

I wonder if that term ("oudou RPG") is the same term they used to describe the new SaGa game...

Anyway, the thing that caught my attention was this:

" We have gathered a group of people who played, and were skillful at, the oudou RPGs that SQEX created back in the age of Super Nintendo(Super NES®)"

Hopefully that means harder challenges and better balancing than SQEX RPGs =P

I wonder what that structure is with the rounds and disks. It looks strangely mechanical compared to the more medieval aspect of the rest of the island.

Dunno, but that image is making me want to change my desktop background, and I've had the same background for something like 4 years now.

would be cool if there are some sci-fi element as well, like the demon come from somewhere ellse, maybe time/dimension travel...

It looks similar to the inner mechanism of a clock / watch. The layered gears on top of each other.

Of course this probably me looking for another Chrono Trigger allusion.

I wonder if the entire game will take place in the snowy landscape. It might be interesting to suddenly change pace but then again, but I think the winter theme is really interesting too.

The only think I don't like about the design so far is the hero's chicken legs. They're like pencils.

What if this does end up being a game in the Chrono series and the idea is to change the seasons ala Oracle of Seasons rather than messing with parallel universes or time travel?

Why?

If there is a new Chrono game then they will call it exactly that to generate the proper hype.

I am not sure, but there are a great deal of parallels to chrono trigger in those screen shots and the games name is still tentative (unless it is seriously just "project setsuna")

I do not recall any real story elements being released so what if this actually does end up being an actual Chrono game and not just one that borrows heavily from it?

No, the title is final. Dunno why it wasn't added to this thread. Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna is the name of the game.

Project Setsuna seems to be the beginning of a small series that might get bigger as they release more games. I think three are planned if the first one does well.

Exactly.

It doesn't need to be a Chrono game, besides what would they do with the story after the events from Cross and all of it's confusion.

This game can have the gameplay, music style, and artistic direction of a Chrono game, but have it's story and world be entirely different.

A spiritual successor that shares common elements with Chrono Trigger but has an entirely new story and lore.

It's easier to do this by having a game that plays like Chrono Trigger and has the exploration of a Chrono Trigger, but not need to have the story allusions and muddying the waters needing to connect it.

It has a name
Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna
Hope we get a localised name soon. Cant remember that for shit.

Story:

On the island on which Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna is set, a ritual sacrifice is offered once every ten years to keep monsters at bay. But when the monsters begin attacking long before the next ritual sacrifice, the next ceremony is decided to be held early. Setsuna, an 18-year-old girl with strong magical powers, is the sacrifice candidate. The protagonist is her bodyguard, keeping her alive on an escort mission where she’s sent to die.

Tokyo RPG Factory is trying to do exactly what the Chrono Trigger team was trying to do back then: developing a Dream Project. Whether it's a Chrono sequel storywise is irrelevant at this point. It already has the same spirit as a Chrono title as far as I'm concerned.

But, I wouldn't mind if a plot twist actually does reveal that the game is part of the Chrono world, similar to the plot twist in Radical Dreamers.
