Prototype -- what to expect?

Because if someone who goes on gaming sites doesn't know about it, I'm sure all the casuals have heard about it right?
I'm sure there are tons of games casuals know about that you don't....

I expect it to bomb. No one knows about the game, seriously I only found out about it a few weeks ago and I'm on this site every day.
I don't know if it'll bomb but I also had never heard of this before the "Infamous or Prototype?" thread a few weeks ago. And I haven't seen it mentioned outside of gaf (other than when I went looking for info once I learned about it of course).

They need to get the word out on this.

Has this been the generation of poor marketing (or very selective marketing) or what?

The few clips of P-type I saw look cool, but I really have no idea what the point is, if its not much more than an awesome looking game where you trash a city (basically) then Im not biting on it...but thats the problem, I have no idea what the game is about.

I still remember Crash Bandicoot commercials ('GET OF MY LAWN YOU FREAK' :lol ) from a decade ago...but nothing recently stands out.

The companies need to put commercials on networks besides G4 and Spike, gamers are getting older and watching stuff besides Cheaters and TUF reruns. Nintendo DS commercials on Food TV were clutch for hitting a new target market.

The Gamestop commercial that is always on make it look exactly like inFamous. Hell, the first time I saw it, that's what I thought it was for.

- Blue shards to collect
- Gliding with red streaks coming off your body
- Falling ground pound

I'm not knocking it because I don't know much about it. Just making a lame observation...

Those 2 are basically genre staples at this point.

Right now he's running down the sidewalk while holding a car, barreling through bystanders.

Kudos for 'Coin Return' for pointing to some actual live game play. It looks balls of fun, check it out.

Maybe to little to late? Then again maybe some details are appreciated? I donÂ’t know. Usually someone creates a nice post with propper typographic art and other visuals to pronouce a new game. Maybe there is a dedicated Prototype thread around here -- I still can't search. I am a bit lazy though.

Anyways since someone is playing it already I would like to know if some of you have already spotted the game at retail. Or are you playing it already?

It's out in the wild, including PC builds, I've heard a couple gaming podcasts say they have the PC version. I wish some more impressions would get out.

Everyone's been swamped with E3 stuff. Give it a bit more time.

8/10 in July OPM Australia magazine, says Infamous is better with 9.

+ highly kinetic, it really is a breeze to navigate across town. Fun, too.
+ as far as pure power fantasies go, this definitely ticks the right boxes.
- it really only has one speed: kill everything
- a fraction rough around the edges at times.

Ugh. I had high hopes for it, but after watching a friend play this for over an hour...so disappointed with this one. It looks like a PS2 game, and is apparently the same engine Activision has been using for fucking EONS with Spidey and the Green Goliath...the biggest difference being that it's built around a completely uninteresting character that I couldn't give two shits about.

At least with the Hulk, you can always say "Hey, cool it's the motherfucking Hulk." With this steaming pile of last generation regurgitated shite shoveled onto the X360 and PS3, that becomes "Hey, look...it's Alex Mercer with some Venom-esque appendages. Yawn."

I've played InFamous, and you, Prototype, are no Infamous. Rent it if you must, but save your hard-earned scratch for the Ghostbusters drop in a couple weeks.

Those Gametrailers vids didn't look very good, but the latest video had me hoping just a tad. Phooey. :(

Ouch. Although I don't think the lack of an established super-character is necessarily a bad thing, I really don't like the redesign of the main character. I thought the generic hoodie look was a lot more appealing.

Yep ...still don't like the current redesign they went with ...always prefered the vest/white hood look from a couple of years back

Not to mention the sneakers. Somehow, the whole acrobatic bit seemed to mesh better with the old look. Is he supposed to be a biker now, is that the backstory?

There was a lot of buzz about this game at E3. Seemed like anyone I mentioned inFamous too was like "yeah I liked it but from what I've played of Prototype, Prototype is better."

So I'm pretty intrigued.

I'll still get it eventually if its a reasonable successor to Hulk: UD on Xbox, but right now it definitely doesn't seem worth investing $60 in. I'll wait till it's $30.

I'm looking forward to it. I beat Infamous a couple of days ago and I was sorely disappointed. It had some cool concepts, but I felt that there was a serious lack of mobility and freedom in a game that relied so heavily on those pillars. I found that it was virtually impossible to get anywhere in a timely manner, whether I was trying to use power lines/train tracks or not. Climbing something to get to those lines/tracks was tedious and took the piss out of my perception as Cole being a bad ass superhero.

Hell, even Spider-Man and the Hulk gave you an ability that let you scale buildings quickly.

Bleh.

Hopefully Prototype will fix some of the mobility problems that made Infamous un-fun.
I played both at E3, and I prefered the movement in Infamous. That game has the sensibilities of a platformer and the team's Sly Cooper roots were obvious. Prototype appears to be more of a straight up brawler. Movement is just a way to get to the action and it isn't very engaging in and of itself. Graphically, I would give Prototype the nod. Infamous appeared to be running at a sub-HD resolution (unless someone screwed up the settings).

I prefer Infamous out of the two but they are both worth trying. Prototype's story and cutscenes were particularly well done.

It most certainly IS NOT a worthy follow-up to the Xbox version of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Not at all. H: UD was IMHO as an avid comic reader and gamer, one of the finest games of the last generation. After that piss poor Hulk movie tie-in game last summer, I went back and played through H: UD again and it still holds up.

This mess not only looks like an original Xbox game (in it's best moments), the story is rubbish and it's so hard to even care at all about the lead. It all just screams of generic mutated anti-hero crap. It's such a damn shame because Radical can do (and has done) so much better. It really looks, feels and plays like an Activision cash-in mash up of past webhead games and the Hulk, particularly traveling around the drab and ugly city. Blech.

And by the way, why can't Rockstar get the Hulk license just to drop him into Liberty City for a delicious one-off? The Green Goliath deserves so much better, and any and all of you deserve more than Prototype (more like Stereotype) brings for sixty fucking dollars.

Wait until it's no more than $30, and even then...I'd think twice and pick up any number of much better titles (or graphic novels) for that $30.

Don't want to get into a pissing contest here between the games, but regarding the sub-HD, the game doesn't look that bad on my TV at least, outside of some aliasing issues (blatant lack of AA). The sharp textures of the game also talk against sub-HD, but at the same time, who knows... But in this case I suspect bad TV settings.

Anyhow, I find these videos to look great. Really eager to hear PS3 impressions.

I just want to fuck shit up. Will Prototype let me do this?

If that's all you want to do, then yes. As long as you don't care for an even remotely engaging story, fleshed out characters, or mind graphics that look like they're straight out of 2003...then yes, yes it will let you "fuck shit up." Have at it. :D

The shoddy lighting and fx really sink the visuals of the game. I mean, it already looks a bit drab and dry, but the flat lighting and the surprisingly poor explosive effects really do not seem to belong in this generation. Every large scale open world game has a give or take so it's by no means a clear cut slap against Prototype, but with a game that focuses so narrowly on destruction, I had hoped for more "punch" to the visuals.

Pretty good looking battle on your 360 or PS3, no?

How about those blood effects, huh?

Seriously, is that tank made up of 4 polygons?
Prototype_tank.jpg

Am I insane or is this just unacceptable in 2009? And before the whole "But it's open world" argument, this is the day and age of open world beauties like the Lost and Damned.
LostJohnny.jpg

If Rockstar can create such beauty, if they can paint with light and texture, if they can do so much with such a massive living city that has so much more going on, all that in just the past year since GTA IV, why not Radical or anyone else for that matter?

Open world does not have to mean "Oh, this going to look like shit".

he's a generic conglomeration of styles agreed upon by committee that are supposed to resonate with various target audiences...like most game characters.

I hate his shoes so much. And yes, I'm well aware that it's a ridiculously petty complaint. :lol

As for the images above, the tank comment is a bit out there. I mean, the industrial design of a modern tank is a bit like that. The rest it's a give and take. There's a lot going on so I'll forgive it for not being the cleanest or most detailed game around, but the flatness and unimpressive destruction fx is harder to get past.

I've never seen anyone trying so hard to make everyone appeal his opinion, ok you don't like the game, we understand, could you leave the thread now?

Just out of curiosity, where and how much did you play Prototype, e3?

I'm surprised too, even on GAF I rarely see people going to such lenghts to downplay something that's hasn't even been officially released yet like he's doing in this thread.

Apparently he watched a friend play it for over 1 hour, he didn't say where though.

After seeing the E3 demo videos, I am extremely underwhelmed. The game just does NOT look polished and after playing inFAMOUS, I think I'll have to pass for now.

You'll have to forgive my enthusiastic anger towards this title. It's only because I was very excited for it, and was very much looking forward to it.

My buddy works in the industry and he invited me to check it out since he knew how stoked I was for it to drop. My disappointment was immense, and I merely wanted to pass along the warning. Take offense if you like, and take no heed of mine or anyone else's warning.

What's that saying about a fool and his money?

Does it say if it's been edited here? I heard that it had a fairly heavy amount of violence toned down in the AU version but then heard it was like the over seas version so I still don't know.

InFamous is great fun, but it's not oozing polish. There are graphical problems, collision bugs, some boring mission design, etc. I don't fault it, because the sum is better than the parts, but it's not some bright and polished gem in comparison to many other games.

I don't know what to think of Prototype based on the videos. It clearly doesn't look like a PS2 game as per the description above, and there seems to be a lot going on at once. To a fault almost. I've seen video where he flys around, scales walls and then impersonates enemies to achieve a goal that seem amazing, and then I see simple chaotic fighting montages that seem boring as hell.
