If your interest is exclusively in Blu Ray playback, I'm not sure I agree that the PS3 is a great choice. The feature set is fine, but it's a pretty awkward machine to use for movie playback. It's also fairly noisy, and the PS3 remote is rather crappy.
I think it's the right choice if you have at least some interest in the games library - but as a dedicated movie player, not so much.

It's a great value.
The Blu-Ray remote works extremely well but is additional cost.
I don't see any reason to get a stand alone player unless you want it silent and you dont play games much. The Samsung BDP1200 fills the non gamers need.

If you live in Europe, try to get one of the silent ones. Mine is so loud I can't recommend it as a BR Player, I need to send it back. There are a lot of loud PS3s in Europe from what I've read.

Some people have mentioned that a good number of Blu-Ray movies released so far have been region free. How can you tell whether a movie is region free or not before buying it? Will it be marked on the packaging, or will the packaging just have a Region B sign when released in Region B countries, even if the disc itself is region free?

Yeah the guy said he was too busy to keep track of releases right now, but he may start it up again in the future. The folks at movietyme test all their movies before they list them on the website so it should be just as accurate:

I've timed it, and just like clockwork, at about the 8 minute mark of the system being on, the fans kick into overdrive and its just about as loud as my Xbox 360. The fans also run at full speed when watching an upscaled DVD. System works perfectly, so I doubt there's much I can do about it.

I don't think it matters where or when you bought it. The only difference is how warm the place is where you put the PS3. The fan will go into high speed mode eventually, but it's a difference of there being a 2-3 hours before it does, or a just a few minutes, all depending on how warm the room is.TerryLee81 said:

As for the whole online thing, again, just an example. I believe the 300 BD was only $1-2 more at most places than the 2-disc DVD in B&M stores around here (Canada).
The biggest thing is, I wouldn't get a standalone player until 2.0 spec players are released.
All players are currently 1.0 spec, meaning they can't decode TrueHD or DTA-MA (you need a specific receiver to decode). Denon has announced their first 1.1 spec player, which will decode TrueHD and DTS-MA, as well as have stellar analog outputs (though it'll cost a good $1500+. 2.0 spec adds internet connectivity.
The PS3 won't have very good analog outs at all compared to standalone players, but if you are only using HDMI, that's not a problem. The PS3 has pretty decent digital video processing (although it still won't match an HQV Reon standalone). So yeah, the PS3 is a pretty good player, especially for the money, but it most likely won't outdo any standalone player out there.
The main reason I'd get the PS3 now though, is that it's by far the most flexible player out there because of internet connectivity and heavy firmware updates. And hey, it plays games!
