PS3 Linux thread.

Ok, so I've got Feisty Fawn installed on my PS3, but now I'd like to step over to YDL 5.0.1 since I really need the built-in wireless. A few questions:

1. Do I have to format my hdd again or is there another way for deleting Ubuntu -> installing YDL without doing this?
2. Since built-in wireless is supported in YDL 5.0.1, will I still need to have my PS3 wired to the router? Or isn't this neccesary anymore?

First question:
You shouldn't have to format from the "Game OS", it should be enough to insert the YDL DVD, boot the OtherOS and start the YDL installer.

Maybe you will need to install the YDL bootloader instead of the Ubuntu one. When I installed Gentoo instead of Ubuntu (before switching back...) the Ubuntu version of the bootloader didn't work well with Gentoo.

Ok, reading the thread better, it is old news for those forums and although they have been able to reliably make use of the extra VRAM they still have some problems.

Reading from RSX's VRAM from CELL (and in to XDR) is much slower than having RSX initiate the data transfer (so it would be RSX reading from GDDR3 and writing into XDR rather than CELL reading from GDDR3 and writing into XDR) and this would explain the low performance they are getting from using the extra RAM as swap.

Depending on their motivation they certainly could do it 100% using Cell. It's unlikely though.

What's the best Linux for PS3 out there ? I read Yellow Dog is the fastest and has the best hardware support ?
But what about ease-of-use ? Especially regarding the installation ?

I'm a total n00b when it comes to Linux, and I've noticed Fedora only takes a few clicks and it's installed ? Yet Yellow Dog (and Gentoo too) requires a ton of command lines to be entered ?

Also, what are must-have add-ons and programs you guys recommend ?

I'll PM you some directions. It's actually really easy, basically there are 3 components you need to download.

MAME, SDL MAME, and GXMAME. I'll send you the RPM files. Then you basically have to seek out files that work, as I've been having some issues getting some to run.

I don't want to talk about it too much more in this thread, as I'm sure that's probably not allowed here? I'll PM you the details when I get home.

I use YDL. Its really easy to install, but you need to configure the yum thing. Once the yum
is good, things are easy.

I have installed so far-

Bittorrent:)
Videodownloader

Oky I've had enough for the day.

I used this guide to get going.

Partition drive great!

Load the boot shit onto USB drive great!

Boot into Other OS.

Code: 
Ubuntu PS3 Kboot Loader.

No default root fs was found, or one was found and it didn't contains a message= config file.

If no rootfs was found, you can enter the shell here with 'sh'. Exiting will return you to this prompt. In the shell you can mount your rootfs as /mnt/root/.

Reasons this may have happened include:

- No drive with a rootfs was actually found.
- Your rootfs does not have the correct volume label of "/"
- Your rootfs is corrupt (use the rescue CD to fix this).

I am using Yellow Dog Linux 5.0.1 Phoenix.

I have MPlayer and VLC for playing xvid/divx. MPlayer seems to have a lot of issues half way through movies where the HDD light goes mental and it goes completely out of sync. VLC still has the HDD light go mental but the movies stay sync'ed during playback.

It's actually quite simple to install MAME. Depending on the distro you're suing (Ubuntu) just launch the Synaptic package manager and search for Mame. Look for an application called MameX and select it (its dependencies will automatically be selected). Once Synaptic installs MameX, launch it, set the ROM directory and just copy over all of your ROMS.

Ubuntu didn't detect my WIFI device. So I have no network connectivity and it's physically impossible to hook up the network connect from one room to the next. >:O

Check psubuntu.com forums, They have a thread with a patched kernel for WiFi. It's WEP only for now from what I read.
 
Oh crap

If that's the case, I'll just use the CAT5 cable to update crap on the network as I won't be using it as a net terminal. I'm just interested in seeing how it handles MAME and functions as a multimedia center. There's a possibility I could well remove my DIVx friendly DVD player from the entertainment center.
 
What is the best process for backing up my PS3 in order to install Linux?

Should I just use the backup utility? Will it save everything on my hard disk, including saves, purchased games and demos? Or is there a smarter way of doing this?

I've got a 60gb USB HDD to do the backup with so I should be ready for anything.

It saves everything...except the profiles/logins...those stay in internal memory I think.

Updating the system. So far so good.

Checked out an episode of the Henry Rollins show via VLC and it's not as horrible as early posters would have had me believe.

Still running software updates. If things can get smoothed out this will be a perfect home media box.

Installed KDEAME. Still totally green in the l00nix world, so I'm winging it.
 
We haven't been keeping up day-to-day with interesting PS3 homebrew developments, but there've been a few in the last week or so, so I thought I'd post a round-up:

Mercury Systems is releasing a High-Performance Computing SDK for PS3 Linux:

Anybody know the command to get XMAME to run in full scReen mode? I've got it running, but it's about the size of a playing card. :(

I tried Google etc.

Tried ALt+Enter = No go
Tried ~ = That controls sound volume

Any help is appreciated.

Also, has anyone had success with Firefox and Flash? Gnash just chokes the system for about 20 minutes.

if i have YDL installed, is it easy to uninstall it and install a different linux OS?

also, can i get rid of the 10 gb partition so my main ps3 has all the HDD space without reformatting or do i have to reformat?

Anyone know what's the easiest distro for turning my PS3 into a network samba mediaplayer?

The DNLA shit with windows vista gives me so much frustration.

Yes, to the first question (you might want to download the latest version of the ADD-ON CD and install otheros from there, before installing Fedora [for example]):

IBM has released a demonstration program for the Interactive Ray Tracer it has been demoing, runnable on PS3 and QS20 servers.

Not tried it myself yet, and I'm sure interactive means "more than 1fps" - particularly on PS3 - but I'll be giving it a go later for sure..
 
I spent the entire day setting up my PS3 with Linux so I could stream all sorts of video stuff from my main pc.

First tried Xubuntu, but couldn't get my wireless to work. Got Yellow Dog Linux 5.01 and that seemed to work ok with wireless (WEP encrypted). Then installing VLC through yumex (packetmanager) which was an whole ordeal. Got through that.

But by far the biggest pain in the ass was network folder sharing, more so because I recently switched to Vista and apparantly Vista uses different security authentication protocols and stuff so had to update samba and/or downgrade those protocols whatever of vista (did both).
Managed to see the shared folders but couldn't open and play the actual files. Spent a couple of hours messing with file permissions on vista, eventually gave up and installed an ftp server on my Vista pc so I at least could transfer files to my PS3 HDD.
Then one last attempt, did some googling and found a link that exactly described what I needed to do. (manually mounting the share in the linux terminal).

All in all it wasn't easy as I'm not familiar with Linux, but in the end I got it to work exactly how I want it to (=access to all the video content on my vista pc via streaming it to my PS3 and displaying it on my HDTV).

So I'm happy and love my PS3 cause I sorta have a replacement for my XBMC. :D Now all Sony needs to do is give more hardware access to Linux so it can run a bit smoother at times (+ the ability of having the XMB as default OS and boot to Linux from the XMB)

You should be able to install over an old one (or upgrade it).

In fact, you don't even need to reinstall: just edit the file /etc/apt/sources.list and replace all instance of the old release name with the new (e.x. feisty->gutsy) then run 'sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' from a terminal

Don't they need to get RSX working before any of those will work any sense? I know I heard they had some sort of breakthrough but I thought they were a ways off from putting out a full driver.

None of those systems are hardware accelerated ;) People have shown pics of MvC/XmenvSF here on gaf almost as soon as the system launched.

I was hoping this thread had been bumped about driver news myself.

Well the latest unofficial PS3RSX driver seems to be working quite well, with acceleration and everything, so at least the scaling is now done by the graphics card and not by a clunky software algorithm.

acceleration just in the window manager and videos yes? Not 3d graphics?

I don't have a usb keyboard around so I haven't jumped in yet
 
This may be a stupid question, but can you use the sixaxis to navigate through linux instead of a mouse? Also are you able to use sixaxis for games in it?

Since I had to format my HDD recently I figured this would be a good project. I have a old windows pc near it and I use a sixaxis to navigate it as well. I have a usb mouse and kb.
