PS3 + Mac media streaming hotness: Nullriver's MediaLink is here!

The Connect360 version would play all my AppleTV formatted files from HandBrake, this does not. It also doesn't seem to want to find my iTunes. I'll wait for the next release. I was really hoping for great things as my Live account is still not working.

I gave up for now, didn't feel like bothering around too much. EyeConnect always worked pretty decently for me, at least at keeping the connection up.

i am exchanging emails now finally with support, apparently it is medialink crashing continuously.

I'm getting the error that port 9385 or 9386 are in use. Where can I check to see what application is using them. I checked the router page(tomato firmware) but couldn't find anything.

Probably because EyeConnect is running somewhere on your system, using both ports. Check with Activity Monitor is there is no EyeConnect... process running. If this is the case, kille them and also delete everything EyeConnect related from your Macintosh HD:Library:Applications Support folder.

Similar error with mine when I tried to start it up. I had to turn off TwonkyVision, as that was the server I had running.

Major difference between Twonky and MediaLink, imho. Twonky wouldn't play the DivX/XviD media files I have on my Mac, whereas MediaLink is playing them problem-free. ML has a bit of a problem playing select WMV files though.

After having owned Connect360 I wouldn't mind too much paying the $20 for MediaLink. I know Nullriver makes quality software and it saves me $$$ instead of buying EyeConnect.

Loving it thus far. :D

Yup thanks, that was the problem but now I'm getting the same error as B-Ri. Hopefully it's fixed soon.

So AAC doesn't work and it doesn't work smoothly with iPhoto either, looks promising though and will get it when they fix the problems.

I bought it last night and it works great. Album art and all.

I got a error trying to play a PSP formated video off a external hard drive connected to my mac. I'll have to test again tonight.

I may have to forward some ports:
TCP port 9386 and UDP port 9385

I don't remember if I opened those or not.

I had to open those ports, and if it's causing you slight problems try it. Can't hurt. :D

I'm in as soon as they sort out the issues.

I've organised my imported (rather than bought) TV shows (in proper format) as TV Shows in iTunes, and it doesn't seem to be seeing them.

Sees movies though, although I got the 2101 errors constantly and I'm not willing to screw around with my router. Music worked.

If it worked for both 360 & the PS3 I'd probably get it, but I don't see the logic of splitting them up. Seems kinda greedy.

Would you be okay with it if it was one product for $40?

As I already bought connect360 a while ago, nope. But I get what you're saying. Even if I didn't own connect 360, $40 for both would be too much.

so version 1.1 is now up on their web site, be sure to instal the preference panel then restart both your mac and ps3.

It sems to have fixed everything for the most part, aalthough it does suffer from occasional server hangups on the ps3 side where itll need to refind the server.

1) If EyeConnect can do both in one app, why can't Nullriver?
2) Connect360 was only $10 if you bought it on the initial release...
3) Whaaaaa!

Do any of these programs transcode Apple Lossless? I guess I've been spoiled by my squeezebox.
Connect360 does, so I'd assume they'll add the feature to MediaLink at some point. That had image and audio transcoding from the beginning.

Can anyone post PS3 screen shots of it in action. Also, does it separate by folder (i.e. Movies>Anime>Naruto) or does it display a list of all movie files like the Xbox 360 does?

Picked it up last night as well... Listening to Wilco with the Earth visualizer is AWESOME. Works flawlessly. I'm very happy. :D

My pornographic animated images work well, until the program decides to stop working, which was twice in one hour.

And it won't see any of my music files, which are all neatly encoded in the standard AAC codec.

I have no problems with Connect360 though, so I trust Nullriver to work these problems out.

Yes I only tested it for a few minutes last night. But it worked. I'm on Leopard as well.

Something must be wrong with my setup : AACs don't work, MP3s do but no album art.

Quoting from there support page. After that reboot your mac and ps3.

Ensure that no firewall is active on your Mac or that ports 9385 (UDP) and 9386 (TCP) are open. Go to the MediaLink preference pane (in System Preferences on your Mac) and click Start to start MediaLink

So... are your music files AAC-encoded? And they show up?

I wonder the same thing. I can only see MP3 (with arts, now that I have actually added them to my MP3s... :D ) but no AAC.

If the issue can only be fixed through routers and you're not willing to correct them there, how are you going to get the problem corrected?

I'm not going to bother and will pass on the whole thing. I don't need to stream content to my PS3, although it'd be nice if I could do it with little to no effort.

Opening ports on a router is little to no effort.

I've never figured it out on my shitty ancient freebie Belkin wireless access point / netgear ASDL modem setup - I have to change the subnet I'm on to get into the Belkin web configureation, then change back to the usual subnet to get into the Netgar - I just can't be arsed to screw around with that. It's worth dropping $20 on this if it just works without having to configure anything, but if it doesn't play nice with what I have now I can live without it until I switch ISP and get a free home hub router to play with.

Completely understandable when you put it that way.

I just have a lot of movies I watch with my girl over the phone, and laying on a couch would be a ton more fun/comfortable than sitting in a computer chair. :D

Music and photos seem to work. But once I go try a few videos I start getting these errors. Then I can't use anything else. Also my .divx files are NOT showing up either, and I have that exact file on the PS3 hard drive and it plays great.

Upgraded to 1.2 (running on Leopard)
I even open the port they said to open in the FAQ.
I've e-mailed Nullriver hopefully they can help :(

My mac is wired, ps3 is wireless.

Streaming video works flawlessly for me with the update, at least for the short tests I conducted during the 30 minute trial. Music, however, refuses to show up. It's all in iTunes, but no matter how I try to access the folder the PS3 sees nothing. Everything is in MP3 format, so it's not an AAC issue. Still impressed overall, and I might well buy the full version for the video streaming alone.

I'm using OS 10.4.11; and connecting via an ancient Linksys WRT54G router. PS3 is connected to the router with an ethernet cable, Mac is wireless.

Is your iTunes Music folder on an external hard-drive ?

By the way, 1.0.2 is out. Those that still have 2101 problems should try it.

Nope...But it seems to be working now, so we can all rest easy. That's before I upgrade to the latest build, as I shall do momentarily.

WOW welcome to Xb360 2005, I wonder what you guys would say if you saw Vista media center and 360 working together.

I would say 'nice, glad that PC is working out for you.'

Seriously though, I did the XP Media Center + 360 thing awhile back (probably around launch), and it was ok.

Then I did Connect360 and loved it, since my mac had more of my media on it, etc.

Then I did Mediatomb + PS3 and thought that it was a hassle to set up, lacked some polish, but got the job done for free.

Now I'm doing Medialink + PS3 and think it's the best I've used. Album art & folder structure really are great additions.

Everything before Vista Media center was pretty much crap, you just can't beat a good Vista media center PC with HDTV capture cards and a 360 for an extender.

I can pause\record live HDTV with DD 5.1 in 1080p through my Xbox in the living room, as well as all the nomal stuff pictures, music(with all album art), video's, internet\FM radio, TV guide ect. Not to mention all the cool plug-ins you can write yourself and remote access through the net. At this point nothing even really comes close to Vista Media Center+XB360.
