PS3: Yellow light of death

I failed to find a really cheap hair dryer. What do you think the odds are that the hair dryer trick will get my system to run for long enough so I can copy my save files?

I did this, surprising the system ran for a couple of weeks, recovered all my stuff and deactivated the system.

Surprisingly. 99.9% of everyone else had complained that they didn't get their game back.

You get a form with the coffin that you have to send in your PS3 and one of the questions in the form is: Is there a disc stuck in the unit? and a check box for yes or no. Maybe they didn't bother filling it out.

The hair dryer trick isn't working for me. I'm going to try again, but I no real hope...except perhaps i can return the hair dryer :lol

dont people realize the fan isnt working or does it happen pretty quickly? They really should have placed a warning popup or something to tell you this.

I never noticed anything. I guess it's because the PS3 fan is so quiet. What happened to me was that I was replaying Assassin's Creed, and I started seeing some really weird graphical glitches. Strips of texture maps appearing in mid air, long black lines-of-sight shooting out from characters' faces... I thought "Huh, that's what I get for buying the PS3 version I s'pose...." Then one night I was watching a DVD, and it just shut down in the middle of it. I never noticed any weird noises or lack of a fan sound, nothing. And then like a complete dumbass I went and bout a Cloud Black ACC PS3 from JapanVideoGames because I thought it'd be fun to play MGS4 using O instead of X. :D

Got the disc out! It won't stay on for long enough to get the data, though. I'll wait for it to cool off a little more and turn it on again.

Ah, even though the green light stays on now there is no video or it freezes and the PS3 logo part before login and turns off.

Crap. The best I can do is get 1/2 way through my FIFA save file. What did EA have to make them so big! :(

Can anyone think of something that would get it to stay on for an extra 5 minutes?

This happened to me a couple weeks ago. I had the unfortunate luck of getting my copy of Demon's Souls stuck in the unit as well. Apparently it might be firmware related? I wouldn't be too surprised...

Wholy shit this is annoying and time consuming. I got my Uncharted 2 save, but I can't get my FIFA 10 save. I got 94 fucking percent done once.

Any idea of how I can keep this POS running for another minute or so? Cool air, heat, tilting it? I just need another minute and I should be able to get my Manager Mode save. BTW, do I need to get the settings, as well?

so it shuts down but you don't get the ylod again when rebooting?
(it needs to be cooled down completely btw)

for one, yes, pointing something cooling in front of the PS3 (the entry-points of the air) may help. While my ex-YLOD PS3 is fine in XMB I placed a fan in front of it as a temporary/lazy fix which allows me to play PS3 games like U2 for an unlimited amount of time (instead of 1-2 hours on a just started PS3).
Additionally you should place the PS3 somewhere very open (the back of the PS3 at least)

if you get the ylod again, you could try the trick another time (maybe with slightly longer times?). It's hard to compare the output of hair blowers but I guess it could not work with a cheap/weak model as the PS3 needs to be heated beyond normal levels (though results seem to vary anyway)

Note that the plastic case of the PS3 wasn't melting at all when I used the highest power settings on my hair dryer w/o even moving it (I guess they are all limited in temperature anyway as it's used for human hair?) but I think I somehow damaged the optical output (5.1DD makes a crushed noise for some very specific pitches or whatever while 2.1 is fine?!) or it's due to multiple ylods ^^

Yes. I can keep booting it up as long as I wait at least 15 minutes between tries and it will get to XMB for a bit before shutting down (blinking red light).

I just tried it this morning and I only got to around 60%. I'll try placing a fan right in front of the unit. I've removed the unit from its place in my entertainment system and it is sitting out in the open on my arcade stick box.

The first time I used the dryer trick it was on low and didn't work; it only worked after I put it on high.

Anyone know an easy way to get the disc out? I have FIFA 10 stuck in there. :(

I had to leave my redbox babylon ad movie in mine, ended up having to pay like $15 for the rental fee of a movie i could have bought used for $5.00 at walmart. Thanks Sony!

The Solution:
get Nintendo to make it or
onitsukatiger_made_of_japan.jpg

My 60gb ps3 was made in Japan. Maybe that's the reason it's not showing any signs of dying.

Call it more of a paranoia. The ps3 has a lot of 'stuff' inside spinning around compared to a gamecube or Wii. I feel like there's more opportunity for some kind of hardware failure.

Just got a ps3 slim for my bday. So i went out last night, bought some thermal compound, made sure not to strip the blue screw. Got that far, and then found out i need a special screwdriver to open the whole case?? these are built like tanks or something. anyways...

just plannin on getting my uncharted 2 disc out, and HOPEFULLY being able to back up saves to a external HDD and then transferring to the new slim. Then i dont know what ill do with the 60 gig. maybe just toss it?

does the external drive need to be like usb 2.0, fat32? does it matter? or should i stick with a USB drive, can i choose just to get the saves off? i can just redownload everything, i dont mind.

My PS3 died and I’m trying to live to tell the story

While I was at Download festival last month I got a text from my boyfriend to say the PS3 had died. When I got home turned out it was YLoD. Everyone had been telling him it was unfixable, but I am never one to admit defeat. So instead of recovering from 5 days of rocking out, I spent 3 hours on it. I took the whole thing apart, reflowed and applied fresh thermal compound and put it back together, and hey presto, it's worked fine ever since. One of his workmates had said if I fixed it he should definitely marry me. I am still waiting for a proposal...

It was pretty easy to fix though. If anyone in the London area doesn't fancy giving it a try I'd be more than happy to do it for you.
