I had a second confirmation last night so it'll come. It's just a shame they got Music Unlimited up first, but the appropriate backlash has at least gotten a couple of responses out of them rather than flat out ignoring it like they used to.

This is great to hear! I think we just need to be patient with launch. We will get several awesome added feature in the next couple of years. Just like last gen, the OS will be an evolving part of the PS4. The best thing is, we pretty much have confirmation that Sony is listening to what we want and they are paying attention to feedback.

Losing money on PS4, Losing on PSplus to some degree I assume

They blocked using PS3 controllers and other peripherals for obvious reasons (its one of the areas where sony typically makes high margin returns)

I can't fault them too much but expect them to have to cave in on certain things to pursue profit guys. Nature of the beast.

Analysts have stated that they're losing some amount of money on PS4, but they expect to very quickly get into the black with PS+ subscriptions, accessory sales, and games. So I don't think that they're losing anything on a PS+ subscription. I'm going to guess that the loss on PS4 is pretty minimal.

Everyone told them for the last few years "Games, Games, Games!!!" So that's exactly what they did. I'd be shocked if their current plan was to just ignore MP3/DLNA support forever, more likely that it wasn't a top priority for smoothing out the OS for launch, which is heavily focused on playing games and sharing those experiences with friends...and with a completely new architecture, I imagine that all media support would have to be re-coded...Yoshida's responses kind of fall into that mold as well.

Honestly, it's annoying that they removed the features, but I'm pretty shocked at the backlash here (and other places) to an extent as well. I like having those features on PS3, but I rarely use them so it was more of a nice to have than anything. I'm a bit surprised that people are as upset as they are. That having been said, I don't plan on selling my PS3, so having that on-deck for backwards compatibility as well as for media playback from my external drive is fine for me.

Understandable. It was a bad move by Sony, but it's looking like they're about to correct this. yosp's tweets and a well trusted insider: Kargari's comments are very reassuring.

It says no to expanding the HDD via external HDD, but it says you can update via usb memory/hdd via safe mode which many has said is way but PS3 has this option too
also I'm sure I heard them say data can be transferred from external memory.

I think you need to realize the he wasn't obligated to say anything. He could of just ignored the tweets he was getting, but he decided to say something and give people at least a little hope that we might see mp3s on ps4 in the future.

For approximately the billionth time, their focus obviously wasn't 100% "Games, Games, Games" if they managed to get Music Unlimited revamped and ready for the PS4's launch.

In short, they picked the wrong music app to give us at launch, without even hinting at the possibility of future additions.

It's so basic! Mp3! Sony always advertise their products as media centres, for their TVs. Music is so BASIC!!! As is USB. I don't know about reworking and all that stuff, but come on yo. mp3s.

It's not like they didn't know we'd be upset. This and lack of customizing themes have me really disappointed, but I do expect at least custom themes to come within the year.

Geez the hardcorez are really backlashing aren't they? I thought people were excited during the announcement that the number 1 priority of the PS4 was to be about "Gamers first"? Now their godly machine does exactly that and people complain about how it doesnt have features that bloated the price of the PS3 and hardly anyone ever used? and had little to nothing to do with gaming? They know people out there listen to porn while playing Battlefield, but that's not the market Sony wants to reach out to, they want the Apple crowd that uses standard devices and services to deliver content and want to trojan horse your living room in order to get some of their services first onto your PS4. Sure you can download Pandora and Google Maps on your iphone, but you'll have itunes radio and apple's maps preinstalled so that the average consumer that doesn't want to deal with waiting to download other stuff and get their kicks instantly. So you'll have Music Unlimited and Crackle before Spotify and Netflix, who cares? These devices update themselves in order to respond to consumer needs. Why do you think Apple never really changed anything about how iOS looked like until ios7? Because Android really didn't matter until probably a year ago.

Sony can do whatever it wants since the Wii U is rolling over dead and the everyone seems to hate the Xbone. Until consumers vote with their wallets and buy something else, they will try to shove this down your throat. Why not if people have already put down the money to buy it? People have kickstarted crappier products on promises alone (OUYA). Sony showed you A Day with Playstation and it got a very favorable reception. Pre-Orders up the Wazoo and there doesn't seem to be anything they left out of that video that they mistakely promised, am I wrong?

The solution for all of this is simple. (apologies if someone has all ready suggested)

1 - Reinstate CD, MP3 and DNLA support so that people can play their current music on the PS4 as they would the PS3
2 - Allow background music in games only when streamed from Music Unlimited

That way, we would all retain the functionality we have come to expect from a console and Sony could promote Music Unlimited as providing additional functionality for those who want it/ can afford it.

Everyones a winner.

As much as I support them trying to push their music streaming service, there just aren't that many people who are going to pay for it either way. If you're actually willing to pay for a service like that then you probably already pay for one, like Spotify. It's just like if there was another service like Netflix, I wouldn't pay for Netflix and another service that does the same thing just so I could use it on another device. There are also the people who download (purchase) their music rather than stream. Why buy (or pay for in a way) for a song I already own? There's no point and it's just a waste of cash moolah. Let us use our own MP3's and have the option to have the Unlimited service.

Yes, you are wrong. People want similar and basic functionality of a console we already had (ps3). Playing an MP3 file or streaming content seems like very basic features for a 400 piece of hardware releasing in 2013. After this backlash you are speaking of, less than 24 hours later we are seeing the results of that 'backlash'. Or at least discussions and some high level feedback that it's being considered.

I love Yosp I tweeted him yday about as I am sure many did. He responded and took it to the developers. I have no idea why anyone would be upset at the customer service he provides. YouTube is supported but not at launch. This has been known since February.

Before now, I don't think you really could in most stuff.

Most of what I record would only be for my own amusement anyways, save for screenshots and such, which hopefully you can extract to post online or such down the road, ala the vita.

My understanding of the External Storage situation is that you can't use an External Drive for installing game data, like with the 360. The External HDD can still be used for playing media on your console (of which I do a lot of when I'm watching downloaded TV shows and movies on my PS3), just not as a secondary drive for game data installation.

If the focus was all games, how the hell do they have Music Unlimited ready and rolled out? hell they even had it lined up perfectly as a "contingency" plan... oh well mp3s no good? Just pay an additional fee! Seriously tossing mp3 support in takes no time whatsoever, has nothing to do with their focus.

Let's get this straight, they did this as a ploy to sell more MU subs, period. There is no other feasible reason. They saw that it blew up in their face, and it's good that we made the noise, because seriously this is shameful.
