PS4 does not support CD and SACD

I think they are obviously looking to sell PSX games through the store and force people to buy. PSX has been software emulated for awhile now so it would be stupid to not include it here when you can always get some suckers like me buying a FF or MGS game again.

A bit sad, but not really a big deal. Reasonning is most likely a cost saving on the disc drive manufacturing (CD playback probably required additional lens).

An utterly bizarre decision. I don't really think it's all that bad in the grand scheme of things, it's just... really rather strange.

This seems like a really stupid thing to get wound up over. It's not like CD playback is a selling point of PS4, and it's not like people don't have other CD players around the house. Let's be straight here — the PS4 probably drains much more power than a bog standard CD player. If you're using a machine like this to listen to music, you're doing it wrong.

People use these same type of arguments when Nintendo didn't have an ethernet port and get called out (rightfully so) for it as "Defense Force" :)

It's the type of feature that simply doesn't make sense to remove. The costs to having it in must be near nothing...

Could have something to do with the Blu-ray drive that they are planning to use in the PS4 it also only read DVDs at 8X & Blu-ray at 6X so maybe it's a drive that is set up in a way that it will not read discs that are burned copies.

Wtf...so weird.
And fuck, no PS1 BC I guess. :/

PS1 is the one generation I do regularly use my PS3 BC for. I love replaying the PS1 Square JRPGs.

... What does that have to do with anything? That's how everything all the way back to the PS1 was unless you modded, and I hadn't heard of PS3 modding to enable burnt PS1/2 games, not physically that is. I could see maybe they can't slow down the drive enough, but even then I can't help but wonder if they couldn't just cache the PS1 disc before play or something.

But at that point it may just be "screw it, we're going with PSN."

meh. I prefer to rip on my PC where I have full control over the quality of the mp3's created, then transfer them over to the PS3/4.

I am unaffected.

It's kind of funny, as a teen of the 90s to think of CDs as an after thought, but I could really care less if I can load my music via USB. It's almost been 10 years since I bought my last cd, lol. I never had a SACD at all. Doesn't phase me at all.

Who wants to play PS1 games in HD? They look like shit.
People who want to play older games they can't buy digitally for PSP and/or Vita? Unless for some reason you mean HD for real rather than HDTVs... and I'd actually prefer HDTV upscaling, because seeing pictures of upressed PS1 games, well, they don't really scale half as well as PS2 and upwards do.

Last thing I heard the PS4 was a videogame console.

People looking for a multi media device will probably want to check out the 720.

I never expected the PS4 to be as games focussed as it is and that really excites me.

I´ve mainly been a 360 gamer this gen ( I also have a PS3 though ), but I have a feeling the PS4 will be my main machine next gen - especially because of its games focus.

You're reading into Sony's initial marketing a little too closely. They want to "control the living room" just as much as Microsoft and it's been that way since they entered this industry.

It will support tablets and most mp3 players, I'm guessing, which means you'll have your music library at your disposal if you're willing to plug those devices into a USB port.

Apart from the media formats sony hasnt been anywhere near as focused on the whole mutlimedia thing as ms, sony focus is still gaming in the ps4.

Very strange considering Sony sell lots of music on CD.

Maybe this is so they can sell you music you already have ?

I used ps3 as my primary CD player because It has optical audio out .

And I think that´t very smart. Everything in the household does "multimedia" now - that wont set you apart. Hell, not long ago I´ve seen a fridge(!) that you could connect to the internet..

Why the hell wouldn't it play CD's? Wow Sony that's dumb. With kutaragi no longer in charge I'm not expecting the PS4 to be multimedia hub that PS3 was.

Although I still buy CDs and listen to them, I never used one in my consoles since Xbox (we could rip them as playlist then, right ? it's been some time), but it's a strange choice.
Do you need a special component to read a CD, compared to a DVD/Bluray ?

To be fair, ethernet's kind of a big deal when it's required to use their MH3G app to play the 3DS game online :P

I don't know how the tech works in this instance, but there is a point where old tech becomes increasingly expensive to support because there is less demand.

Regardless, sorry if my opinion comes across as Sony Defense Force. I just haven't put a CD in a CD player for about ten years, other than for ripping to my computer. I only ever listen to MP3s nowadays. My opinion on people using a PS3/PS4/360/computer purely as a CD player doesn't change though. It's blatantly wasteful of electricity.

Yeah, but we are nowhere near that point for CD. DVD would have to be dead at a minimum for that to be the case, and probably laser based storage in general.

Didnt sony invent SACD?

Like all Sony proprietary formats, it never caught on outside of a very small niche. Support for SACD was removed from the PS3 when PS2 BC was removed, at this point anybody who cared had to realize that the writing was on the wall and SACD was going to be abandoned.

RIP 1-bit DSD

I ripped a couple of my CDs on the ps3.
It's not hard to get around this (just rip them on PC and use a USB stick) but still weird.
