PS4 has 8 GB OF GDDR5 RAM

Not sure what the big deal is here? Multiplatform games will look similar, 1st party titles for Sony might look better, but the average consumer is not going to care...I don't see what all the hype is about here.

Especially since we have no idea what either system will be priced at.

I'm having trouble even comprehending what the jump from 256MB of DDR3 will be like for developers.

The PS3 had 256MB of DDR3 video memory. 256. Let that sink in for a minute. The wizardry some devs accomplished with this is nothing short of amazing.

Now they have 8GB (minus OS pool, rumoured to be 512MB, but I'm guessing it will likely be 1GB) of GDDR5 to play with. It's ridiculous, developers must be bouncing off the walls at this announcement.

Really happy for them and can't wait to immerse myself in the results.

Just wanted to say again Kudos to Sony for doing this. Not a Killzone fan, but to see 1080p/30fps that is what I'm talking about. Considering it is a launch title this is target right out of the box.

Gamers should welcome this big time. Imagine the possibilities here going forward.

Metal Gear Rising 2 PLZ, zomg 1080p60fps of facemelting awesome, hell I'd accept a 1080p60fps MGR for PS4 with even better IQ/textures.

My only question, will: "8GB GDDR5!" become the next hilarious 'meme' in gaming history? I can see that living on with the likes of "that 60 FPS feel!".

Maybe "8GB GDDR5 IS ABOUT TO MAKE YOU ITS BITCH" would be a good marketing slogan for them?

In all seriousness I'm sure this is great news for us gamers, but I'm already sick of people who have no understanding of RAM hyping this out the ass.

you can store a lot of 3d textures and volumetric shit in 8gb, not to mention all the flat textures normal maps, polys, etc, not to mention a buffer to make streaming easier, that is to say, loading more content before you need it so that you're less likely to see it happen on-screen.

lets say 512x512 texture and choose a number at random like 32 bit depth, you might think yeah, rgba, 32 bits, makes sense, but not quite so much. Anyways, with our made up number we have, 512x512x32 = 1MB exactly, well if we want to extend that to be volumetric 512x512x512x32 = 512MB. OH NOES.

So much this!

If the tables were turned, and MS was confirming 8GB DDR5 for their console, people would be falling all over themselves proclaiming MS gaming's savior. Since it's Sony I guess things have to be tempered a bit.

Alright, thanks for explaining that. I figured it had to be an issue with overall design, just wasn't sure. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Don't get me wrong though, for the rumored price point/power restrictions there's some good stuff in there. The major problem is that devs tend to push anything to it's limits and then some. I have no doubt in my mind we'll see some amazing stuff, however 1080p@60fps as baseline just seems unlikely imo(Some games will have it though).

So what would be the realworld impact of 8GB of RAM in general and also about it being GDDR5? I understand certain stuff like world-size, textures, and animations can be improved.

Im trying to imagine what Naughty Dog, Studio Santa Monica or PD will do with this hardware...yeah we are in for a treat.

No PCs currently use GDDR5 for system memory. It is an extremely fast high bandwidth type of memory that is currently only used by high end graphics cards. 3-4x faster than the system memory in a modern PC.

And no graphics cards exist today with more than 4GB of GDDR5.

So there is no direct comparison yet. Many people were every saying 8GB of GDDR5 was impossible with current fabrication techniques, until the Sony reveal proved them wrong.

Wrong. The Titan has 6GBs of GDDR5 ram and there are 6gb HD 7970 cards out there.

well that's it. and more of all of those things. Much like for the PC for the last few years, it all depends on what the lowest common denominator of hardware the games are designed to run properly on. If the 720 is weaker and ends up being the baseline for all multiplat games, those multiplat games will mostly fail to take advantage of the extra room the PS4 and PC offers. The exclusives that are well-made will look decidedly better.

He said on Twitter that not much would be shown especially third parties....lol
His bias reminds me of Che Chou before his job @ MS.
I think it's fair to say that very few people expected to see that level of third party support at the event. I'd hardly call that bias.

As much as I do not deny the guy's bias, he really did NOT mention the term, "Secret sauce" as a defence for XB3, ever.

yeah it was if i remember right proelite thing (could be wrong) Aegis doesn't look like a fanboy or persona with bias. Last time when he was saying anything about X is that it is much stronger than same pc hardware which is true as SoC design not really he was comparing it to PS4.

Also most of us including Aegis were speculating from rumors. Taking any of that as fact just reeks of fanboyism same as people now saying "Where is thuway now ?" Thuway didn't predict 8GB and he opposed that idea same as any other logical person out there. 8GB of GDRR5 in console is completely mental and absolutely no one could predict that. Even EDGE article suggested Sony is trying to go with 8GB not that they will go with 8GB.

Sony outdid themselves with this 8GB and honestly this is very very very big thing for developers out there especially that this is just one pool for whole console. Completely unified ram structure will help a lot developers and at the same time it will work faster since there won't be that much overhead.

There is also a downside to that choice. Price.

I expected price to be 399$ but now.. i don't see it 399$ anymore.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this... if this turns out to be true, then damn.

As unexpected as this is, I can't help but feel that Sony is repeating the same mistake they made last gen... This is just going to be too expensive at launch, and they will be digging out of a hole again.

There's no way this is going to be under 499, right?

This is going to be interesting for PC gaming. For the longest time, even the most intense games on PC didn't push over 2gb (even at the 2560x1600p resolution). So if PS4 starts to actually use over that limit, I wonder if that is going to force all PC gamers to start using higher VRAM.

I'm not sure how that translates, going from Console VRAM to PC (not sure if it's 1 for 1). If it is, or close to it, then PS4 just made a lot of GPUS obsolete - since most of them adopted the 2gb or 4gb limit. Even that $1,000 Nvidia Titan card is 6gb.

Usually PS3 exclusive games were not ported to the PC and it will be the same for PS4.

And multiplats, I'm afraid, will still have to work on Durango so they will not "truly" take the advantage of PS4's 8GB of RAM.

I'd be more concerned about the cost for them than the retail cost. The base model could be $399, but what if it's costing them $550-$600 to produce? My hope/belief is that the production costs will scale down much faster than PS3 due to the hardware not being exotic so any losses that occur shouldn't be long term.

Is it possible to run Plaanetside 2 on this machine or is it too weak to run it?

From looks without a fucking problem. Planetside2 is also high HDD dependent (meaning SSD is almost needed) and this may complicate things but as i said there is no reason to even run it better on consoles (more fast ram something which is very very very needed by most of MMO games)

I expect it could magically leave you a $100 richer when you choose it over the PS4, which is the specialist sauce of all.

I doubt that. Based on hardware specs, Kinect ate into the BoM that could have gone to more graphical power. I don't expect much of a cost difference if any.

pardon my ignorance!!

could i get some perspective? :)

how much ram does a ps3 and xbox 360 have?

PS3 - 512MB (256MB XDR/256MB GDDR3)

360 - 512MB GDDR3

Handily beaten

Yeah pricing is going to be very interesting for this gen. But even launching with its absurd 599 price, Ps3 eventually pulled out of the talespin.

I hope its $399, but that does seem like a pipe dream now.

Devs are happy because they can make some pretty screenshots and youtube videos with all of that extra RAM to play with.

Of course like all youtube videos it'll still run at 30fps...
