PS4 UI hands-on [offscreen]

Don't think that's retail... Or at least, there's nothing new here.

What they never show is how do you manage the tons of games you are going to have?

That flat horizontal list isn't going to cut it.

I think so far the PS3 XMB is better even though that also left a lot to be desired in the organization department.

It's fast though which is great, let's hope it stays that way when it has internet connectivity.

Didn't look all that impressive to me, but I'm guessing this isn't final. If there's many games installed it will hopefully have some kind of filer or sort options.
There's a Library icon in the BF4 startup video, hopefully it uses the screen space more efficiently than the default row of large tiles in the home screen.

Well that didn't show me anything I haven't already seen. =/

I really hope that there's some way to group your games and apps. Like folders, or what not. I can imagine that single horizontal scroll getting a bit tiresome once you've amassed a certain amount of games.

Edit: *looks up* oh

Any new changes you can share with us?

There is a Library option in the latest FW that has just been added (1.5). Interestingly, I am not sure if that is for your games, or your images and video recordings. The videos we have recorded at work do not appear in there, but that is a dev kit thing (they appear elsewhere).

I am guessing games will be kept in Library, as the left to right list will get rather unusable after a while.

Well we know that all it does is play games or bluray/dvd so don't be surprised to see a plain UI when they scrapped all media functions for launch. (who knows maybe they will add them in slowly later)

So many hopes and dreams rest on that one icon, lol. I'm imagining it's like the Steam library where it shows everything you own, whether or not it'd downloaded.
FWIW, I think they do that with the current batch of Bravias:

The Bravia UI looks very similar to the PS4's so I'm expecting the Library view to be similar to the All App view on the Bravias. From what i can tell, the checked items on the Bravia app menu are downloaded while the others are available for download. I'm curious about the filters though. I haven't found any real pictures with that option, I've only seen it in PR shots.

Interesting...

So I take it when you see friends logged in it doesn't necessarily state whether they're online via PS3 or PS4?

I can't remember if Vita makes that distinction either (at least, I never see my friends logged on under "Vita").

From what I've seen it looks like on the Xbox One you can access the entire dashboard and UI with the game playing in the background (not saying you can but on a video it looked like that to me). Is there anything showing the PS4 can do something similar to that?

Slightly concerning I saw the spinning circles of tedium when it was loading things from the HDD.

FW1.5 is fairy light, but I like its simplicity. It's also very fast to use, leaving and re-entering the current game very fluidly (and instantly).

So that was similar to the final version of the UI ? What about pictures like the one below, is it deeper in the OS functions, or have things changed ?

You have to think at some point they will have some themes. What ?..., that like easy money, I have to assume its something that will be in the works.

Yep PS4 is like that (just like Vita).

So bland.

Simplistic and robust. You won't be saying that when you get your hands on it. I saw the UI as of a few days back. Things are much more functional than you would imagine. Especially compared to the missing boxes and bare Xbone UI.

Supposedly you can switch from UI to game by double tapping a button but the game won't be on display like the X1, which is pointless and takes away from the GPU to get the UI to do that.

That is when you select one of the games. You can press X or down and it will drop to the lower level of the Dynamic Menu. It will then display the game info, show a background, play game music, show trophies, info, trailers etc. From there are options to Start the game.

There's the E3 trailer and a couple of real life videos of people popping in and out of the dash while the console is offline.

XMB was a piece of shit.

This doesn't look great, but it's a step in the right direction. It's simple and not incredibly annoying to navigate like the XMB garbage was.

Another shit UI hands-on.
Stupid that we still haven't had an official one
Pester IGN. Apparently, it's them who needs to get on it. I'm kind of giving up honestly, we'll find out once in launches in a couple of weeks.
Why do you always title your posts?
Because there's no reason not to, I'm a smartass and there's a clever way to put it somewhere else that's not my main post, because I want to, and because you noticed.

Thanks for the explanation. It's a bit surprising to have a transition from a minimalist interface to a very visual one, but why not.

No, any friends logged in on their Vita will be at the bottom of your friends list. Their profile never fully loads up on the PS3.

I can't believe we are this close to launch and we still haven't seen a true walk through of each next gen console OS.

Sony is on their game but their network isn't up yet. If I can get confirmation about that time or when it happens then you will know how good they have it but there's a reason MP of BF4 was shown while Xbone was only SP.
